PROTECT THE BOSS 110805

If the first two episodes of ‘Protect The Boss’ are any indication of what is to come, we are all in for a marvelously hilarious roller coaster ride of laughs and fun. At the same time, there are always underlying issues such as child abuse (in this case adult abuse) in every drama. All of the main characters including Kim Jaejoong’s Cha Mu-Won are well-acted and it is so much fun watching the subtleties in Jaejoong’s expressions and his marvelous abiltity to subdue his natural exuberance. The rivalry between Cha Ji-Heon and Cha Mu-Won is intriquing and will be interesting to watch as it unfolds.

The boss and his secretary are over-the-top with their antics and amusing ways. This is a great drama to sit back, relax with, and rest your heels. As it unfolds I will write more on this first of Jaejoong’s domestic dramas.

The U-Know Yunho-Claudia couple have decided to withdraw from the SBS variety show ‘Kim Yuna’s Kiss&Cry’.

PD Kim Jae Hyuk of ‘Kiss&Cry’ stated on the 3rd that, “U-Know Yunho and Claudia will be withdrawing from the competition,” and “Out of all the participating figure skaters, Claudia is currently the only active skater as a backup national athlete and will begin training from early August.”

He continued to add, “Claudia will also be competing at the Junior Grand Prix prematch which will be held at Taereung in early August. Her scheduled activities will overlap. What an active skater needs more than anything is practice and competitions. That is why she decided to withdraw.”

This meant that the two didn’t participate in the filming of the fifth round that was held on the 2nd. They will replace their scheduled performance with an interview regarding their withdrawal for the episode that will air on the 7th.

PD Kim stated, “Initially, ‘Kiss&Cry’ was scheduled to end at the end of July,” and “However, the World Figure Skating Championships, which Kim Yuna was listed to perform in, was delayed a month due to the earthquake in Japan. Therefore, ‘Kiss&Cry’ was delayed a month as well. We’ve been continuously trying to adjust the schedule but it wasn’t an easy task. It’s a shame.”

He also added, “U-Know Yunho is also feeling extremely sad about it,” and “It would have been nice if U-Know Yunho and Claudia could have stayed with us till the end, but they have had to unfortunately withdraw and it’s a real shame. Though the program is important, training is more important to an active skater like Claudia. We ask for our viewers to understand their situation.”

According to AGB Neilsen Media Research, the episode of “Protect The Boss” that was aired on 3 August saw ratings of 12.6%(National Standard.) Although lower than “City Hunter”(18%) which ended on 28 July, it became the no. 2 Wednesday-Thursday drama, exceeding 10% from the first episode.

This episode described the process of how the representative ”880,000 won Generation” female lead Choi Kang Hee (Noh Eun Sol) came to be 3rd generation chaebol Ji Sung’s (Cha Ji Hun) secretary. Furthermore, Ji Sung’s father, played by Park Yong Gyu’s comical acting caught the attention of the viewers.

On the other hand, in the same time slot, ratings for MBC’s drama “The Day We Fall In Love” was 7.3% and KBS2′s Drama “The Princess’ Man” had ratings of 17.0%.

In the first episode of SBS’s “Protect the Boss” aired on 3 August, Kim Jaejoong plays the role of Managing Director, and achieved success in term of national drama ratings.

In “Protect the Boss,” Kim Jaejoong plays the role of DN Group’s 2nd Division Planning Department Head cum Managing Director. His character Cha Mu Won is engaged in a rivalry with Cha Ji Hun, his cousin and eldest son of DN Group’s Chairman.

Cha Mu Won manages all the operations in the company in place of the troublemaker Cha Ji Hun, is both capable and handsome, the always gentlemanly “Prince of the Financial World.”

In 2007, Kim Jaejoong participated in the movie “Postman to Heaven” with Han Hyo Joo, and following his role in the Japanese Fuji TV drama “Sunao Ni Narenakute” last year, this is his first time acting in a Korean drama.

JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong was seen wearing a cute ribbon headband on the filming site of “Protect the Boss.” Kim Jaejoong plays the role of, Cha Moowon in SBS’s new drama “Protect the Boss.”

Recently, while shooting at an amusement park, Kim Jaejoong wore a cute red ribbon headband and said, “I bet on our an audience ratings with the other actors. I can’t tell you the exact amount but I think it will be high. I hope my fans in foreign countries who watch the drama are counted as well.” Kim Jaejoong also made a peace sign with his fingers while taking a selca and prayed for the drama’s success.

The main characters in the drama, Choi Kanghee, Jisung, and Wang Jihye confidently predicted that the ratings will be high.

Choi Kanghee who plays No Eunsul in the drama said that the entire drama production crew was close to each other and that they make the atmosphere at the drama set comfortable. As a result, she believes that, “the ratings will rise higher and higher.”

Jisung, who plays Cha Jihun, said, “I agree with her 100%. Believe in us.”

Scent of A Woman

When I first started watching Scent of A Woman, it was with my usual attitude toward the beginning episodes of most Korean dramas. The first episode is usually designed to introduce the characters so the acting is over-the-top, but critical elements are present to introduce the main plot. By the second episode, Scent of A Woman was starting to display signs of underlying seriousness, after all, cancer is a devastating illness. There are also the undercurrents of sexual harassment of the women in the office and a company that has been abusing its employees for some time. The executive characterizations are typical–there is the spoiled heiress and the arranged marriage element also.

What has sparked my interest in this drama is the rawness of the actress Lee Yoon Jae’s portrayal of the main female character. Her style of acting here is real and believable, and she is presented as a normal woman living with her unfulfilled dreams. The emphasis on honorifics that exist in the Korean culture are addressed in her relationship with her former school friend become Doctor. Her manners are deplorable but realistic.

She deserves love, but in her anger against the cancer she strikes out at all around her, and she seeks love by deception. On Holiday, Lee Yoon Jae meets the company Director portrayed by Kang Ji Wook, and their relationship with all of its pathos is what this drama is all about.

I’m looking forward to Episode Five because I have not seen Junsu act, except in his musicals on stage, for some time. I am curious as to how much he has improved over those early films with DBSK. I believe that he will do a wonderful job. I am liking this drama more as it progresses–so if you looked at the first episode and concluded that it was trivial-think again and watch this poignant story of a woman fighting for life, love, and dignity.
