Yuchun âI like group activities better than individual activities, to be honestâŠI enjoy it. I donât know how fans would feel. There may be fans who support individual activities more. But sometimes I feel that the fans would place more importance and show more interest in group activities.â
Jaejoong âI agree.â
Junsu âWhen we first started our activities, I think fans also thought that it was a reasonable and good thing for a member to do something for another member. But at some point in time, fans started to be sensitive about things that we thought nothing of doing for each other. There are fans who become fans because of Jaejoongâs acting, or fans who like my musical, not JYJ. It goes same for Yuchunâs drama. I think thatâs what their positions are. But, I hope that they would keep in mind that we are JYJ before that.â
Jaejoong âWe say these words with caution since the intentions of the fans are for the good of us, support and love for me. But I really would like to take this chance to talk about this before starting group activities for this album. Please keep in mind that we are able to come out and do our individual activities from the energy we gain from JYJ.â
Yuchun âThere is another thing I would like to ask of our fans. We set the directions for our activities. We discuss it with the agency, but we make most of the decisions. But I noticed that there were many people who criticize the agency.â
Junsu âPeople believe that decisions that are beneficial to some and as beneficial to others are being made.â
Yuchun âPlease understand this. There are times when we make considerations for the agency and when members make considerations for other members. But fans think that the decisions we made out of consideration for each other is a decision made unilaterally by the agency. Of course, we know. We know that it is out of your love for that member. But we chose to walk out from [our former] agency because we wanted to make our own decisions, and so we prioritize the respect for our opinions above anything else.â
Junsu âYes. We listen to what the agency has to say. But we make the decisions. Among our activities, some have been more successful than others. Fans believe that those decisions have been made by the agency, but it is not true. To put it simply, we do what we want to do. I would like the fans, out of the love they have for us, to understand that JYJ are people who take responsibilities for the decisions they have made.â
Jaejoong âWe hope that the fans would support us so that we could do what we want to do. Of course, we know that the fans have been our greatest support going through the hard times with us when we left our former agency.â
Junsu âAfter the hard times, I feel that the members and fans have laughed more and grown closer together. That is why we would like the fans to enjoy our group activities instead of being worried and defensive. Above all, I have the deepest gratitude for the fans.â
Jaejoong âItâs like fans and us are a family now.â
Q. Anyhow, that is a long time. There are many names to friendships. What kind of friends are you to each other?
Yuchun âThere is no right word that could describe us. Before, it was just a friend and a family. There were few words that came to my mind, but now, the meaning of those words just seems pointless. There is just no need for it.â
Junsu âWe depend on each other more and grow closer together when we are going through hard times, rather than being together only in good times.â
Yuchun âI donât know what happiness is, but I really want three of us to keep doing well. It would be great if we became more successful and made a lot of money, but I think about how strong our relationship would be if the three of us could just have a smile on our faces simply by seeing each otherâs faces. Of course, JYJ activities are very important and I would like to keep doing it. But I hope we do it because we think alike, because we are so happy when we are together, and because we think it would be great to do something like this when we listen to a song on the radio. Things we could do because it makes each other happy. We donât know what great things we would be or what lies ahead in our future. Even if we donât get the leading roles when we are forty years-old, and we could only afford to do 10 shows when we did 30 shows in the past, I would be happy if we were happy just for the sake of doing it. It would be great if we were successful, but thatâs not what is important.â
Yuchun âPeople tell me to widen the social circle a little since the types of people I meet are limited. But it doesnât matter how many people I meet. I have these two [Jaejoong and Junsu] as my security. Jaejoong hyung and Junsu. These two will always be there for me, and thatâs enough. What would I be afraid of or worried about when I have assets like these two?â
Junsu âItâs hard enough to make just one [friend like this].â (laughs)
Jaejoong âItâs like a security deposit.â (laughs)
Q. Itâs been three years since the last album, and the three of you have been involved in many individual activities. It is a time that would have matured you as a person as well. It may be a little abstract, but please tell us how your growth over the three years has been reflected in this album.
Junsu âGenres are more diverse, but we are relaxed a bit more in this album. It is not that we werenât trying as hard but we matured in a way. For example, even for the same dance music, we chose songs with stronger impression rather than faster and louder beat. It is true that all three of us have different taste in music, but we also know what music JYJ should be doing. We got a lot of songs from Korean and international composers. About 80 songs. Each of us chose 5 songs, but 3 of the songs overlapped. Instead of deciding which songs were good or bad, we thought about music we should be doing, and we think alike.â
Q. What do three of you think JYJâs music should be?
Yuchun âGood music. And music that harmonizes well with Junsuâs voice and Jaejoong hyungâs voice.â
Jaejoong âWe didnât think about the trends or genre for this album. We chose not to think about anything other than just finding the common ground for the three of us. There are songs with a powerful instrumental music, a cappella, R&B or pure pop. We chose songs that all three of us thought were good when we listened.â
Q. Three of you are all so different. It is amazing that you could find a common ground in good music.
Yuchun âI think we had few similar impressions [about music] when thinking about the group and excluding the genres we liked. These impressions come purely from the long years we spent together. There is no clear reason, but when we listen to the songs, we know what is good, what would go well with the members, and what it would be like when three of us sing together. This is possible because we have been together for a long time.â
Q. After reuniting after three years of activities in different areas instead of continuing activities as JYJ, there must be some changes you have noticed.
Jaejoong âI am sure all of us have it.â
Yuchun âI donât have any.â
Jaejoong âYou donât have any? Why not?â (laughs) [T/N: JJ uses baby talk in a very cute, mocking way] Junsu and I had no pressure to sing because we had released solo albums [during the three years]. But I was wondering what it would be like for Yuchun, who only did acting. Junsu did musicals, so I thought the musical side of him would show and rock for me, since I released rock album. So we started recording wondering what the intersection that would encompass all three of us would be, but once the recording started, it was just JYJ. We were surprised too.â
Junsu âThere is a difference between the vocals when doing a musical and when singing as JYJ. Thatâs also true for Jaejoong hyung. In case of Yuchun, I couldnât really remember the last time I saw him singing. I worried that he may have lost the touch. But then, we went to karaoke on Yuchunâs birthday, and he sang so well. Maybe itâs because heâd been acting, but I could see that there was something more heart-rendering about his singing now. I was worried too. I was worried if we could start group activities again after three years of doing individual activities, but it turns out that it was only 3 years that we were apart.â
Yuchun âI thought we were together for all 10 years.â (laughs)
Junsu âYes. 10 years all together.â
Jaejoong âIt is our 11th year. Longer if we count the years before debut.â
To the question, âIs Kim Jaejoong happy now? Or, firstly, does Kim Jaejoong believe in happiness?â
Jaejoong âThat standard [of happiness] is hard to say these days. People ask me, âJYJ doesnât really see each other often outside of the work, like album recording, since you are all so busy doing individual activities, right?â Itâs actually true. I am happy to see them so often during the making of the album. I was so happy when the three of us started [JYJ] activities together. But then as time passed, we are connected regardless of whether we are apart or together. It doesnât matter if we are together or we are apart, we feel each otherâs presences. Itâs similar with happiness. If I had a clear definition of happiness before, now I donât feel like I should have or do something to be happy. [turns to Yuchun, who previously texted “Are you happy these days?”] I got that text when I was filming a drama, and I was dazed. How many times did we talk about the future, ask each other if we were happy and if we would be happy? Answer to that question changed with each year we grew older, and it was weird hearing that conversation again.â
Junsu âWe left [our former] agency because we truly wanted to be happy. We keep asking ourselves if we are headed in that direction, and I think we also worry that this happiness would fade away when we are happy. There are good and bad sides to everything. Whether you are rich or successful, there is definitely a bad side to it. It depends on how you think about it. If I think that I am unhappy because I donât have something, then I am unhappy. But if I can be satisfied about having what others do not have, then I am happy. Itâs harder than you think, because I would be unhappy pursuing something that I donât have. Arenât we at least closer to the answer of happiness than we were then?â
Yuchun âThere is nothing to happiness, really. Realizing that even when you are going through the hardest time of your life, that moment in itself may be happiness. Realizing that you are happy not because you are having a good time, but that being able to go through the hard times and keep going with your life in itself may be happiness. I think thatâs why the members have a clear goal. They donât have the clear goal, but they have a clear goal. When I sent Jaejoong hyung that text, I was so tired and worn out. I had trouble sleeping, intimidated with thoughts racing in my mind. But then I realized in that situation, that I was fortunate. It is all good. I am still happy. Thatâs why I texted him. I knew he was busy filming a drama, making albums and preparing for the show, but that was not what I was asking. It was a question like, âdid you eat?â You could say it depends on how you look at it, but Jaejoong hyungâs answer was same as mine. No more judging between what is happiness and what is not.â

Call to action: Open investigation into the Incheon Asian Games Organizing Committeeâs unilateral exclusion of JYJ from Incheon Asian Games Opening Ceremony
The Asian Games is the most prestigious games organized by the Olympic Council of Asia, bringing together over 10,000 athletes, team officials, and technical delegates from 45 nations every four years. The 2014 Asian Games will be held in the city of Incheon, South Korea this coming September. To promote the games across Asia, the IAGOC appointed Korean superstars JYJ as honorary ambassadors to the 2014 Incheon Asian Games last February 20, 2013. In the words of the IAGOC, âwe appointed JYJ as the honorary ambassador, whose popularity is well recognized all around the Asia, to encourage the rest of the Asia to know more about the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.â Fulfilling their roles for one and a half years, JYJ performed extensive promotional activities for the Incheon Asian Games, such as travelling to Guangzhou, China and Hanoi, Vietnam to put on promotional showcases. They even sang the Gamesâ official theme song âONLY ONEâ, being the face of the Games on promotional advertisements throughout Asia. They have likewise filmed multiple televised commercials to better promote the upcoming Games.
On July 1, 2014, however, JYJ was neither invited nor informed of the press conference that the IAGOC held, and were unilaterally dropped from the opening and closing ceremoniesâ list of performers through press releases, despite several attempts by JYJâs management C-JeS Entertainment to clarify the matter with the Committee as the Service Contract specifically included performance by JYJ on the opening and closing ceremonies. Quite surprisingly, this incident came about after it was recently announced that SM Entertainment, JYJâs previous management company, was named a sponsor for the Incheon 2014 Asian Paralympic Games. A boyband from SM Entertainment, who had no previous connection to the Incheon Asian Games and not once promoted it will instead be performing a pop-song of their own at the opening and closing ceremonies and also appeared at the press conference in lieu of JYJ. On the other hand, JYJ, the Gamesâ honorary ambassadors, are barred from performing the official theme song of the Incheon Asian Games, âOnly Oneâ, which they sang and promoted specifically for the Incheon Asian Games.
On top of this, the IAGOC has been selling opening ceremony tickets since December, 2013 at the sky-high price of 1 Million Korean Won, or approximately $900 USD, using JYJâs name and saying that JYJ will perform during the opening ceremony. Since JYJ are the official ambassadors, it is reasonable for anyone buying tickets to opening ceremony to expect that they would be performing. As JYJ are limited in their promotional activities due to an invisible hand blocking them, fans of JYJ still bought these tickets and booked international flights to Incheon, hoping to catch a glimpse of JYJ on a fair stage. This now has become impossible as the IAGOCâs anomalous acts in the form of a shameless and fraudulent bait-and-switch scheme. For more than a year, the Committee has made over four billion Asians believe that JYJ is the face of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games through their advertisements and roadshows which JYJ participated in. Yet, they did not bother to mention the name JYJ at the press conference and have dropped JYJ from the list of performers during the ceremonies. Instead, another boyband suddenly appeared at the press conference and in the advertisements instead of JYJ. As of the writing of this petition letter, the official tour agency of the IAGOC which is responsible for selling tour packages to foreigners, is still selling opening ceremony tickets and tour packages using JYJâs name and thereby continuing to knowingly mislead fans and the public.
The actions of the IAGOC have drawn worldwide criticism from spectators to journalists, tarnishing the reputation of the Asian Games and bringing concern regarding whether or not the IAGOC is capable of holding a fair competition for athletes who have trained all their lives for this one stage. If a mere corporate donation caused the IAGOC to drop their honorary ambassadors in such a disgraceful and public manner, we, the spectators and consumers of the Incheon Asian Games, cannot trust them to conduct fair play for athletes during the Games.
We join JYJâs management in its plea to IAGOC to keep the promise with their Honorary Ambassadors JYJ. We also believe that the 2014 Incheon Asian Games Committee as well as the Olympic Council of Asia are organized to fulfill the public interest, which is based upon loyalty and trust.
We call upon the Olympic Council of Asia to perform an open investigation into the IAGOCâs actions to ensure an untainted Asian Games and bring justice and fair play to performers and athletes consistent with the spirit of the Games themselves.
(Currently more than 7,000Â 17,000 signatures collected)
JYJ3âČs Note: A Formal petition letter along with the signatures gathered will be sent to the Olympic Council of Asia and the IAGOC.
We would like to thanks to the authors and to the fans & non-fans for participate on this Petition.
Letâs do this for Jaejoong, Yuchun and Junsu and please always remind that together we are stronger.

-The official statement from CJES regarding Incheon Asian Games-
The 2014 Incheon Asian Games committee said âwe appointed JYJ as the honorary ambassador, whose popularity is well recognized all around the Asia, to encourage the rest of the asia to know more about the 2014 Incheon Asian Games and to boost the promotional campaigns.â
When the C-jes Entertainment was discussing the roles of JYJ as the honorary ambassador, the officially formed service contract was accomplished with the campaign marketing agency from the 2014 Incheon Asian Games committee. The contract includes the following statements; âanything promotional campaigns related to the 2014 Incheon Asian Games should be agreed upon with JYJ in advance.â And â2014 Incheon Asian Games is obligated to consider JYJ as their top priority when casting other K-POP stars or singers for the opening and closing ceremony and any other conferences held by oversea media. Also, the 2014 Incheon Asian Games committee and its chairman along with the person who was in charge of the promotional campaign PROMISED JYJ THE STAGES FOR BOTH OPENING AND CLOSING CEREMONIES.
Followed up campaigns such as recording the title song of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, Only One, and making the music video with no charge; JYJ has been nothing but loyal to the 2014 Incheon Asian Games. Moreover, JYJ participated the showcase held in Hanoi, Vientnam and Guangzhou, China last October and November. The showcase in November where all the persons concerned for the 2014 Incheon Asian Games was supposed to gather was cancelled due to the natural disaster in Philippines.
A month ago, C-jes Entertainment notified the 2014 Incheon Asian Games committee that JYJ will join the Incheon Main Stadium opening event and the press conferences for both opening and closing ceremonies where the stage director would be there as well. However, no further information regarding every events could be received from the committee and the press conference happened today was one result from such matter. On the most recent call with the committee, they said that there is nothing confirmed for the stage schedule yet. However today the committee distributed to the press that they have âStars Casted for the Opening and Closing Ceremoniesâ and did not mention JYJ, the official honorary ambassador. The committee also said that the appearance of JYJ is confirmed, but they are NOT discussing when the stage of JYJ will be made but WHETHER THEY WILL ALLOW JYJâS STAGE TO GO ON.
The 2014 Incheon Asian Games committee PROMISED the opening and closing ceremonies. They even suggested collaborating a stage with PSY for the closing ceremony and JYJ told the commiittee that they would be honored to be on the same stage.
The 2014 Incheon Asian Games should keep the promise with JYJ. We believe that the 2014 Incheon Asian Games committee is organized to fulfill the public interest, which is based upon the loyalty and trust. For more than a year, the committee has made over four billion Asians believe that JYJ is the face of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, yet they did not bother to mention the name JYJ at the press conference. This goes against common sense. The stage with such a great singer who is loved the nation-wide.
If the committee tries to blame the person who was in charge of casting the honorary ambassador in the future or to make an excuse saying that JYJ was supposed to perform on the opening and closing event, not the main ceremony would be very disgraceful of the committee. It does not need lots of reasons to see how ridiculous it is that JYJ, who has been working really hard for the campaign and even recorded the theme song, was only going to perform on the even before the big main ceremony.
As you already know, JYJ was unfairly informed that they were no longer needed for the event for the Je-Ju New 7 Wonders of Natureâs honorary ambassodor in 2011. (It was unfair because JYJ was given such information just one day before the event and obviously they have reserved their flights and was even given a cue sheet.)
We remember the day we had a first meeting with the committee last May. We emphasized that JYJ has gone through enough painful obstruction and that it fears them it might happen again. We told them JYJ would not even consider starting something unless it is fully agreed upon and everything is obligated since the pain will be unbearable, not only for the members of JYJ but all the fans around the world who love them. The committee said that it is beyond deplorable that such obstruction is and has been occurring to JYJ. They were also very confident that they will not let such problem occur to JYJ.
We hope this breach of contract is not made by another preposterous and unfair threat and sincerely ask for everyoneâs attention and support for JYJ.

From this arose the âexternal influence controversyâ that JYJ (Jaejoong, Yoochun, Junsu)âs status as former members of TVXQ has blocked them from attending the opening and closing ceremonies. TVXQ went to court in 2009 because of a contract problem with SM Entertainment.
With news that SM Entertainmentâs EXO will perform at the opening ceremony of the Incheon Asian Games in September, the controversy is gaining speed as being highly plausible.
Director Jang Jin, who is in charge of both the event and the ceremonies, spoke up about this during the press conference that was held on the 1st and said, âWe have not made any announcements on JYJâs participation in the opening and closing ceremonies because their appearance has not been confirmed yet. If Kim Junsu participates in the performance in the second act that involves musical stars, his act could overlap with JYJâs, so weâre in the final stages of arbitration. It would be great to see them at the ceremony.â He continued to state, âJYJ have done so much for the events, acting as the honorary ambassadors for the past two years. There are a few details that need to be ironed out but it is definitely not a political issue.â
A representative of the IAGâs committee also revealed in a phone conversation with xportsnews that, âWeâre currently signing contracts with the celebrities who will be appearing in the ceremony. JYJâs appearance has not been confirmed yet. It will probably be confirmed in two or three weeks.â
However, JYJâs agency C-JeS Entertainment released an official statement on this day and pressured the committee by saying, âThe IAG must follow through with the promise they made with us.â
C-JeS revealed parts of their contract as they stated, âIn the process of discussing JYJâs role as honorary ambassadors, the IAGâs committee promised, âIn the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as press conferences with foreign press, JYJ will be given priority over others when Korean singers are needed.â At the time, the head of the committee and those in charge of promotional activities promised that JYJ would be able to appear in the opening and closing ceremonies as the finale act.â
C-JeS ended with, âWe hope that the Incheon Asian Gamesâ breach of contract is not a result of the illogical and unfair external influences that JYJ have faced in the past.â
JYJâs Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu left TVXQ and SM Entertainment in 2009. When they began holding promotional activities as JYJ, their broadcasted activities were severely restricted. In July of 2013, the Fair Trade Commission ruled an issue correction order against SM Entertainment and the Korean Federation of Pop Culture and Art Industries for interfering with JYJâs broadcasted activities. SM Entertainment is currently in charge of EXO and TVXQ.
Because of this, questions are being raised on whether external influences are in play for an event that is supposed to be an Asian celebration that brings 45 countries together.
While working as the honorary ambassadors of the Incheon Asian Games, JYJ have released the gamesâ official theme song âONLY ONEâ and shot a music video. They also filmed a no-guarantee commercial and participated in promotional events, which included showcase events in Hanoi, Vietnam and Guangzhou, China last year.
