[News] Kim Joon Soo: ‘The Role That Has No Correct Answer Attracts me’

[News] Kim Joon Soo: ‘The Role That Has No Correct Answer Attracts Me’

Kim Joon Soo will play the role of Tod in the Musical “Elizabeth.”

The musical “Elizabeth” is based on a true life story of Austria’s Empress Elizabeth, and the other protagonist besides Elizabeth is Tod, which is the personified character of death. “Tod,” who met Elizabeth when she was young, fell in love with her and came to stay right beside her during her lifetime while tempting her. Elizabeth, who came to be destined to live in the cage of the palace even though she had been pursuing her free life and love, became weakened by Tod’s temptations.

Rookie musical actor and star idol group member Kim Joon Soo of JYJ will challenge himself by playing the difficult role of Tod. Kim Joon Soo reportedly worried very much when was first asked to play the role, regarding whether he could play the role very well or not. Kim said, “Doing something that I want to do and something that I can do is another story. I thought that ‘Death’ has to be grave and dignified, and the actor who plays this role has to have enough acting experience. I agonized greatly whether I could successfully play the role. But I realized that ‘death’ does not exist and there will be no correct answer.” He explained that he decided to play the character because he would present something that does not exist. Kim continued, “The head of our agency asked me, ‘Why do you think that the character should be dignified even though it does not exist?’ After I listened to his question, I realized that it could be young or innocent, and I decided to present ‘Death’ my own way, according to how I think.”

His own thoughts on death have also changed from vague ideas of “What is after death?” and “Do I really die someday?” to a more concrete definition, in which is, “Death is something that makes people feel that they are only human who inevitably die, which makes people feel miserable.” Before he creates the image of “death,” he thought about how Elizabeth thinks and feels before “death.” Five actors who will play death and Elizabeth and the director discussed together. Kim Joon Soo said, “Death asked Elizabeth what ‘death’ meant to her, and she answered that she, who had been dreaming of free life, felt pessimistic when she became the empress. I thought that ‘death’ might have brought her a kind of freedom, comfort, and peace.”

The character of “Death” will be played by Kim Joon Soo in his twenties, Song Chang Ui in his thirties, and Ryu Jeong Han in his forties. The three actors have different charms and different experiences, and their ways of presenting the same character might be different. Kim Joon Soo hinted that the character death that will be played by three different actors will be varied in their costumes and hairstyles, and he will present dancing more than the other two actors. He did not lose his courage in a situation where he had to appear with other veteran actors, but he said confidently, “Watching different acting by different actors who play the same character is a very exciting element and the power of the musical.” He also said confidently that he could use the best of his weak and husky voice to play his character. He seemed to be free from the restraint of an actor who came from an idol group. Kim said, “I knew that some people criticized me that I had been cast as the protagonist only because I came from a star idol group, and I had been very cautious. I did not know about musicals at all when I appeared in the musical ‘Mozart’ as the protagonist, but musicals gave me strength and hope when I had gone through a very difficult situation, so I do not want to give up appearing in musicals. Now I only think that I have to repay the audience and the producer who have shown trust to me. It is true that I come from a idol group, and I am trying my best to change people’s prejudice about me. I want to be regarded as a musical actor who really loves musicals.”

[Trans] 120128 JYJ’s Kim Junsu Says, “What Scares Me Most About Our First South American Concert Is…”

[Trans] 120128 JYJ’s Kim Junsu Says, “What Scares Me Most About Our First South American Concert Is…”

JYJ’s Kim Junsu recently expressed his anticipation for the group’s upcoming concerts in Peru and Chile in March.

Kim Junsu met with reporters and stated, “This is the first time in five years that I’m going to South America since visiting Rio de Janeiro in 2007 for a commercial. At that time, I only stayed for four or five days so I wasn’t able to see much while I was there,” and “My anticipation for our upcoming concerts there is as high as it could possibly be as we’ll work with passionate people in a new environment.“

His increased anticipation is partially due to the fact that he recently experienced the passion of fans from a similar culture through JYJ’s concert in Spain. He was deeply moved by the fact that fans were not merely spectators, but participants who were enjoying themselves.

Kim Junsu let out a long sigh as he said, “If there’s one thing that scares me, it’s the duration of the flight,” and “Last time, I think it took me more than 15 hours to get to Brazil with a stopover in Paris. I was told that it would take even longer this time around.”

The singer ended the interview with the statement, “As these South American concerts are the last leg of JYJ’s world tour, I think we’ll be able to provide the most complete performance we’ve ever given of everything we’ve done till now. We promise to visit our fans in other countries of the Central and South American region, such as Brazil and Mexico, someday.“

Meanwhile, JYJ will be holding solo concerts in Chile and Peru on the 9th and 11th of March respectively and Kim Junsu will begin performing in the musical ‘Elisabeth’ on the 9th of February.

Translation 120130 Kim Junsu’s Exclusive Interview: It’s Really Crazy Too Be Compared With Cho Seung Woo Hyung

[Trans] 120130 Kim Junsu’s Exclusive Interview: It’s Really Crazy To Be Compared With Cho Seung Woo Hyung‏

[Musical Elisabeth’s Lead Kim Junsu]

To compare me, who has only participated in three works, with the best senior…

Due to the pressure received for being an idol and overcame it in debut work, ‘Mozart’.

If were to reborn, I would not be an artiste.

During the later half of 2009, musical ‘Mozart’ production team’s EMK musical company had the last contractual discussion with TVXQ member Xiah Junsu. Xiah Junsu was the best as an idol singer but the experience for musical was naught. The performance fee that the company proposed was different from the request by Xiah Junsu’s representative. The 3000 seatings in Sejong Cultural Centre for the performance was considered to be a large hall. “The 3rd floor won’t be filled up anyway,” this was what the production company thought. The situation ended with Xiah Junsu’s representative’s , “Our Junsu can do it.”

“Our Junsu” made it. At the opening of ‘Mozart’ on January 2010, the crowd filled up the three floors of Sejong Cultural Centre. There were hundreds of Japanese middle-aged ladies who held the air ticket in one hand and the other hand holding onto to a binoculars, flying across the sea to see him. Xiah Junsu gained the title of ‘Running Guarantee’ (Performance fee received based on the tickets’s sales) with 30 million won fee. Last year, the online ticketing system crashed for his second work, ‘Tears of Heaven’ and the tickets were sold out within 5 minutes.

“Our Junsu” Xiah Junsu (Kim Junsu) will be the male lead Tod for ‘Elisabeth’ that is opening next February 9th. When we met on the 27th in a cafe at Seoul’s Jeong-dong, Jong-gu, his seemingly thin frame made others curious about the charm that made his noona fans lost their mind over this 25 year-old young adult. He reached 8 minutes later of scheduled time and lowered his head, saying ‘sorry’. His sincerity about punctuality during the practice sessions was complimented by many.

– Your ticket selling power was compared with ‘Musical Sage’ Cho Seung Woo. How do you feel about it?

“It’s really crazy. Please don’t do this. Isn’t Seung Woo hyung the best in musical industry? Although I am thankful, it’s best not to compare with me who is only just about to start my 3rd musical work. If the comparison was made after I acted in more than ten musicals, probably I wouldn’t be wanting to hide away (like now).”

– When you debuted in musical, nobody expected Xiah Junsu to be such successful. Personally, what is the reason behind your success?

“When I received the musical proposal, I did not sleep well for a week. Because this is my first step after independency (from the previous company SM Entertainment), thus I was very troubled. I did heard of discrimination against idols in musical industry too. However, other than me myself, nobody can protect me. Moreover there’s no existence of protective barrier at all. I am very clear about it.”

– The part where you worked hard due to your status as an idol?

“Being an idol is a double-sided blade. Although you are able to easily attained the lead and received the limelight but there’s the enormous hinder. Due to the performance in musical and overcame the obstacle and learnt about life. ‘In this world, having a dream will need to accept the woes as well’, whenever I am listening to the songs in Mozart, I would cry a lot inside me. As an artiste and to face the public judgement, the pressure is huge, and he (musical/Mozart) speak it out for me.”

– Other than the songs in musical, there were a lot of elements added in, which is your favourite?

“When I first stood on the musical stage, I crazily felt that it’s embarrassing. After I have done it, the joy that it brought me was totally different from a concert. In the two hours on stage, I am not idol Xiah Junsu but as someone else. I like this point a lot.”

In July 2009, after the successful injunction filed by him and two other TVXQ members towards SM Entertainment due to unfair contract length and income etc, they emerged as JYJ. However after that, as singers, JYJ are unable to appear on national broadcasting companies. In the one hour, he has been friendly answering everything, however he paused for a while towards such an inquiry.

“One can’t live (in the past). Have to keep holding on and rough it out. I had the thinking that I have to work even harder. To be able to do what we want, I think this is the happiest to us (JYJ).”

– Many teens dreamt to be the next Xiah Junsu?

“I would not be an artiste in my next life. (He repeated this thrice) Of course as of now, I have no regrets in my life. It is very happy to receive love and concern. But after I passed the audition when I was 15, I have never been in my relaxed mode the minute I went out the door. I have never been to Lotte World either. Sometimes I do felt that I’ve wasted it. It is very tough to be receiving provoking comments from others too. However I have to admit that it’s normal to have losses in life and to understand the surroundings and into thankfulness.”

With regards to new work ‘Elisabeth’, “Working with (Ryu) Jung Han hyung who also acted as Tod, (Song) Chang ui and Kim Sun Young noona and Ock Joo Hyun noona who acted as Elisabeth, is the biggest subject (to learn).” “Recently I am only listening to music from musicals. I would like to try choosing works for small-scaled musicals.”

[INTERVIEW] 120129 Kim Junsu – Attracted To The Role of The Transcendental “Death”

[INTERVIEW] 120129 Kim Junsu – Attracted To The Role Of The Transcendental “Death”

Musical “Elisabeth” Kim Junsu
Open from Feb. 9 at Blue Square Samsung Electronics Hall

In 2010, Kim Junsu has already experienced the musical “Elisabeth”. In the musical proposed by composer Sylvester Levay “Kim Junsu Musical Concert – Levay With Friends”, he has already performed most of the songs in the musical “Mozart”. However, it is revealed that “Elisabeth” will have six major songs.

Junsu personally performed ‘Death (Tod)’’s two songs, which were ‘When I Feel Like Dancing” and “Last Dance”. His greed rose as he sang the songs. During that time, it was not confirmed that the musical would premiere in South Korea but he had already set his eyes on the role of “Death”.

“Elisabeth” is the most successful German-language musical ever since it started in Vienna 20 years ago in 1992. It will finally premiere in South Korea this coming Feb. 9 at Hannam-dong’s Blue Square Samung Electronics Hall. Of course, Kim Junsu will play the role of the alluring fantasy being “Death” who stays besides the ill-fated Habsburg Empress “Elisabeth” constantly.

“Although they are all actors, I am a singer so I think that it is more important to select songs than choosing play. Even though I already know that it is a good musical, it will be more touching if I get to sing it personally. Also, the role of “Death” itself is not a person, but an imaginery transcendental existence. The role itself is charming. Adding a twist in Elisabeth’s life using the fantasy character “Death” in the musical, I think that Michael Kunze is really an outstanding person.”

Even so, Junsu did not accept the role without hesitation. He thinks that the role of “Death” should have substance. As there will be a triple cast of Ryu Jung-han and Song Chang-Ee, he is worried that he will be lacking in substance due to his age and experience in musicals.

“I hesitated and questioned myself, ‘Who will give substance to this role?’ When I heard that, I think I should take the role. My self-confidence increased when I think that I can express the role well.”

Interpreting the sweet temptation of Elisabeth’s longing for freedom

Mobilising the country’s best musical actors for the premiere

Junsu thinks that the role of “Death” in the musical is sweet. To Elisabeth who longs for freedom, her life in the imperial family is a tragic one and death gives her the sweet temptation of rest and peacefulness.

“There is no answer to death. Nobody has feel and experience it before. I think that to Elisabeth, experiencing the existence of death is sweet. The voice and music will be dark, but I have to express a slight sweetness in my role.”

From his debut musical “Mozart”, “Tears of Heaven” to “Elisabeth”, Junsu always takes the lead role in South Korea’s musical premieres. Although it is a great risk for the producer, he believes in the growth potential of Junsu who only has a year of experience in musicals.

“Even though I have no plans, I think that I was given a good opportunity. To me, the image of the actor in the premiere becomes the image of the Korean actor. Although there is a burden, I think that I have to do well since I have accepted the role. It will be good if I can show the other sides of myself, which I did not show in the previous two musicals. To a musical actor, this musical gives me a chance to develop my skills.”

JYJ’s schedule is tight, but Junsu always thinks that he is lacking as a musical actor, hence he constantly listens to musical music and watches musicals in his spare time.

“This play mobilises the best musical actors in the country. It is Elisabeth’s strength. It will be fine if I do well. I was worried about my voice when portraying the transcendental existence in this play. I have paid a lot of attention to details like expression and hand and body movements.

Besides Kim Junsu, the cast of the musical “Elisabeth” includes Ok Ju-hyun, Kim Sun-young and Park Eun Tae.
