News: Kim Junsu is Once Again Filling in the Leading Role of the Musical “Mozart” Encore Performances

NEWS: Kim Junsu is (once again) filling in the leading role of the musical ‘Mozart!’ Encore Performances!

There are a total of four actors who will play Mozart, and they are Lim Tae Kyung, Park Eun Tae, Kim Junsu and Jeon Dong Seok.

Kim Junsu’s appearance in the production became a hot topic of debate amongst fans and representatives of the musical industry when it was announced that the musical would be having encore performances in 2011.

Kim Junsu debuted as a musical actor through the musical ‘Mozart!’ last January and was able to make a successful debut by sweeping up all Best Newcomer awards and Ticket Power awards in various musical awards ceremonies such as The Musical Awards, the Korean Musical Awards and the Interpark Golden Ticket Awards.

Afterwards, he stood on stage with world-renowned musical actor Brad Little in a new musical, working with Frank Wildhorn, the composer of ‘Monte Christo’ and ‘Jekyll and Hyde’.
Kim Junsu stated, “Because ‘Mozart!’ was the first production since my debut that I participated in as Kim Junsu, I have a lot of affection for it and there is a feeling of longing that I have because it was my first musical. But then I heard that most of the original cast of ‘Mozart!’ were getting together for an encore performance, and I knew that I had to stand on stage with them as Mozart again.”

Kim Junsu, who is currently participating in a variety of activities with his fellow band-mates Park Yoochun and Kim Jaejoong, recently finished the first leg of JYJ’s World Tour in Thailand with success. Though many were initially skeptical of his appearance in the musical due to his busy schedule as a singer, Kim Junsu’s agency and the production company were able to come to a compromise and set an appropriate schedule as Kim Junsu himself had a strong desire to return to the musical.

CEO Eom Hong Hyun of EMK Musical Company stated, “We are extremely happy to be able to work with Kim Junsu again. Because he is an actor who was able to incorporate his own style into Mozart’s rebellious and free-spirited character, we are excited to see how much he has grown in the past year, and because he’s an artiste who is still young and full of potential, we hope he continues to try out various genres of music so that he can continue to be a leading example to other singers.“
Yoo Hui Sung, who has returned as the director for the musical, stated, “I’m highly anticipating working with Kim Junsu again and we will work hard to show the audience a great performance.”

The musical ‘Mozart!’ reinterprets the dynamic life of the musical genius Mozart with a variety of musical genres such as rock and jazz. With over 500 extravagant costumes and wigs, it is considered to be Europe’s greatest musical, enrapturing tens of millions of audience members with its content and visual intricacy.

It was first performed in Korea in 2010 at the Sejong Arts Center and broke records by bringing in over 100,000 audience members in just one month. The musical then proceeded to collect a total of 11 trophies in various musical awards ceremonies in 2010.

The encore performances of the musical ‘Mozart!’ will be held from May 24th to July 3rd at the Seongnam Arts Center and the cast will include actors from the original cast such as Lim Tae Kyung, Park Eun Tae, Seo Bum Seok, Min Young Gi, Lee Kyung Mi, Shin Youn Suk and Jung Seon Ah as well as some new faces such as Jeon Dong Seok, Lim Gang Hee, Jung Young Joo, Yoon Seung Wook and Enok.

News 110419 How Do Idol Group Members Get Paid?

News 110419 How Do Idol Group Members Get Paid?

With the plethora of idol groups out there on the scene, one can’t help but wonder: how much money do these “kids” make? Sure they gain popularity through their respective groups, but it’s a known fact that each and every member isn’t given the same amount of attention and gigs. And let’s say we focus on just one group member. Do they get to keep the money that they themselves worked for? Or do they have to split it among their other group members?

Let’s use Nickhun of 2PM as an example. He shoots an ice cream commercial here in Korea, followed by a beverage commercial shoot over in Thailand. Then he returns to Korea and does some appearances on variety shows, only to then star in a TV drama. Out of all those jobs, what will Nickhun be able to keep as pay? Well, the ice cream commercial in Korea will be equally divided among the five other 2PM members. However, Nickhun will be able to keep all of the pay from the Thailand commercial shoot. Variety program appearances also get divvied up among the others, though the drama pay will be pocketed by Nickhun entirely. This is according to the initial contracted agreement among the six members and JYP Entertainment. Nickhun must split everything with the exception of drama roles and jobs in his homeland, Thailand. Six members may seem like a lot, but what about some of the other idol groups out there with 9 members? 10? 13? The matter of pay presents a very complicated situation.

JYP along with CUBE Entertainment follow the equal pay distribution system. The explanation from a JYP official: “If a member gets some individual work, it’s because he’s ultimately a member of the respective idol group.” Therefore, the pay should be equally divided among the people who make the group possible; all of the people. These days, Lee Gi-gwang of BEAST and Hyuna of 4minute get more solo gigs than their other members, yet their pay is still shared among all of them.

However, there are more entertainment agencies that follow another system. The system of taking home what you yourself earned. For example, SM Entertainment, which is known to multi-task its entertainers. Some of its popular groups feature one or two members that are more popular than the rest. Prime examples being Yoona or Taeyeon of Girls Generation or Kim Hee-chul or Lee-teuk of Super Junior. One entertainment official even divulged, “Because the difference in pay between the highest paid Super Junior member and the lowest paid Super Junior member is so big, their vibe [together] is a bit weird.”

In the case of Pledis Entertainment, the name behind After School which features UEE and Park Gahi or Core Contents Media which backs T-ara, the group boasting Eun-jung and Ji-yeon, each member also keeps what they earn. However, whenever the stars feature on variety programs, Core Contents Media gets to keep the entire pay. The company sees this as justified because appearances on variety programs are to promote the group’s album anyway. Also, the pay per episode isn’t even that much so it’s not like the girls are taking that big of a hit.

So which way is the “better” system? One entertainment insider explained, “Whether you do it this way or that way, there’s bound to be complaints. In the case of splitting the pay, members with more active schedules have the most complaints. As for systems where each member gets to keep their own pay, the less popular members [with less work] has the most complaints. There’s a reason behind the fact that idol groups form easily and break up easily.”

Press Statement: United Asia Management and KMP Holdings are Cartels that Call for State Correction

Posted on April 19, 2011 by The JYJ Files

A Thank you to TheJYJFiles for the continued education in legal matters for those of us who desire to learn.
Momma Cha

Official Press Statement of the International Consumers of the Korean Wave and Supporters of JYJ regarding United Asia Management and KMP Holdings as Cartels that Call for State Correction

The recently formed United Asia Management (hereafter, “UAM”) and its spiritual predecessor KMP Holdings are cartels. The International Consumers of the Korean Wave and Supporters of JYJ hereby alert the State actors of the Korean Government of these two open and high-profile disregard of the Korean laws and international standards of competition and urge swift action.

A cartel is “an agreement between businesses not to compete with each other.”[i] There is international consensus on the basic statutory elements of a cartel: an (1) agreement (2) between competitors (3) that restrict competition. UAM and KMP Holdings squarely meet the above definition. First, the agreement exists because the very structure of these transactions as understood by all parties, which bring direct competitors together to cooperate in capturing the common market, makes the restriction of competition inevitable. Indeed, an agreement need not be formal or written to be prosecuted, and is actually almost always tacit and not openly acknowledged. Second, the companies that make up UAM and KMP Holdings are clearly in direct competition. Third, aside from the structural restriction on competition discussed above, the open, publicized aims of these two ventures proclaim that they shall engage in at least one of the four categories of conduct of a “hard core cartel”: “to share or divide markets by allocating customers, suppliers, territories, or lines of commerce.” [ii] The unpublicized aims of these companies may meet other categories, i.e., price-fixing, output restriction, and bid-rigging.

To prevent the formation of cartels, the OECD, of which Korea is a member State, recommends that enterprises refrain from engaging in mergers, takeovers, joint ventures or other acquisition of control whether of a horizontal, vertical, or a conglomerate nature. Further, the UN, of which Korea is again a member State, enumerates as priorities for all nations “the creation, encouragement and protection of competition” which cartels by definition stymie. Additionally, Korea’s own Monopoly Regulation and Fair Trade Act (hereafter, “KMRFTA”) purports “to encourage fair and free economic competition by prohibiting the abuse of market-dominant positions and the excessive concentration of economic power.” In the EU, a firm with a market share of as low as 39% can be considered “dominant”. Both UAM and KMP Holdings far exceed that percentage and approach or exceed double that amount. These companies, along with the Korean Government, have an obligation to the Korean public and the international community to stop these public and gross violations of existing norms at once.

Cartels cause serious harm to society and the industry. As Korea recognizes through KMRFTA, the restriction of competition by cartels hinder “the creativity in business activities, the protection of consumers, and the promotion of the balanced development of the national economy.” Accordingly, cartels are vigorously prosecuted in all countries that place a high value on market competition. In fact, the Justice Department of the United States of America, the nation-leader of free market, states that “because of the harm that cartel violations cause, [our] number one antitrust priority is criminal prosecution of those activities.”[iii]

As the ultimate arbiters of the success or failure of Hallyu, we the international consumers have been deeply concerned with the damage caused by cartels in the Korean Entertainment industry over the years. We have already witnessed the degradation in quality of Hallyu products, in particular in the lack of choice and diminishing innovation in the Korean pop music industry, driven by the saturation of “idols” and the unchecked practice of slave contracts brought about by the lack of competition. We have also witnessed a disconcerting lack of transparency and fairness in Korea’s popular media, which breeds mistrust in both Korean and International consumers. That Korea’s big entertainment companies and mainstream broadcasting stations collude to allocate consumers amongst themselves and to limit access to the market for other players at the expense of consumer freedom of choice has been obvious for years to all serious consumers of Korean Wave.

We are also deeply concerned about the harm that cartels like UAM and KMP Holdings inflict on the intellectual property rights protection of Korean artists, and ultimately, on their creativity and development which drive the progress of the Korean Wave. The lack of competition allows Korean entertainment companies to include provisions that violate basic norms of intellectual property rights protection in their standard contracts with their entertainers. The lack of competition also prevents the formation of organisations that represent the interests of entertainers’ basic rights. This is unacceptable given that Korea has ratified the key international instruments in this area and that she is a member State of the International Labour Organisation. The restriction on competition by cartels like UAM and KMP Holdings only aggravate the exploitation of the creativity of Korea’s artists and make consumers accomplices in a pattern that will ultimately destroy Hallyu. We refuse to either endorse or become complicit in such an arrangement.

Therefore, we ask the Government of the Republic of Korea to correct this unfortunate state of affairs at once by taking action against UAM and KMP Holdings. UAM and KMP Holdings openly and unashamedly restrict competition and violate Korea’s laws and the international standards she values. Such acts have, and will continue to, stall and even regress the Korean Wave for the sake of profits by the few dominant established players. We advise the participants of cartels and the Republic of Korea: Korea must prove that she satisfies basic international standards of competition and free market and therefore earnestly protects the rights of vulnerable actors and consumers before even dreaming of being taken seriously in the international market.

News 110419 JYJ Shows Their Mighty ‘Hallyu’ Power! Following Music, Now Promoting The Nation’s Economy

That’s what I have always foreseen with our guys. They have the talent, resourcefulness, and the heart to be ambassadors. Great job, Mancubs. I am curious as to what the acronym OKTA stands for. Momma Cha

News: 110419 JYJ Shows Their Mighty ‘Hallyu Idol’ Power! Following Music, Now Promoting The Nation’s Economy

Male group JYJ is appointed as World-OKTA ambassador.

On last April 18th, JYJ attended an event held at Vista hall, Sheraton Walker Hill Hotel in Seoul, namely ‘The 30th Anniversary of World-OKTA’ as the organization’s newly appointed ambassador, the members unfolded a performance stage to celebrate the event.

Participants in this event also included Knowledge Economy Minister Choi Joong-kyung, governors of each region, and about 1000 other attendees. In addition, an award of merit section was also conducted to appreciate those national business leaders in relevant overseas Korean organizations who have contributed to Korea’s economic and social development.

A World-OKTA official revealed the reason of their appointed ambassador as, “JYJ has been portraying image as leader of Hallyu wave as they demonstrate skill to reach the wide global culture (through their music), this image matches the goal of World-OKTA that is to create nation’s opportunity in world economy, thus we think they have the right to be appointed as our ambassador.”

JYJ said during the event at the venue, “We’re really pleased to be appointed as ambassador of World-OKTA in promoting South Korea’s contribution in world economy. JYJ and World-OKTA will continuously strive to promote the excellence of our nation’s culture in even more broader reach of the world.”
