Beginning with the “KBS Entertainment Awards” on 22 Dec, the anticipation towards the year-end award ceremonies of the 3 broadcasting agencies in Korea is high. As with any awards ceremony, much attention is on who will walk away with the award. Although it is also an honour to receive the big awards from the broadcasting agencies, who take into consideration your contributions and popularity, the best way to affirm your popularity with the viewers is through the popularity award.

Among those, the popularity award of the drama awards is one that actors and actresses take pride in, and that fans participate enthusiastically in. In particular, as there are many male actors with deep-rooted popularity involved in the MBC Drama Awards this year, it has attracted an exceptional number of female viewers to vote. It seems that the competition is even stiffer than for the Daesang.

During an interview with OSEN, MBC representatives explained, “The number of nominees for the popularity award is usually set at 10. However, as the performance of the male actors in MBC drams this year has been outstanding, the number of nominees has been increased.” With the number of nominees increased to 15, it seems difficult to predict who will win.

Voting began on 21 Dec via the MBC official website. The 15 nominees for the popularity award are: Kim Soo Hyun with “The Moon That Embraces The Sun”, Kim Jae Won with “May Queen”, JYJ’s Jaejoong with “Dr. Jin”, JYJ’s Yoochun with “I Miss You”, Song Seung Hun with “Dr. Jin”, Ahn Jae Wook with “Light And Shadow”, Yeo Jin Goo with “The Moon That Embraces TheThe Sun”, Yoo Seung Ho with “I Miss You”, Lee Seon Gyun with “Golden Time”, Lee Seung Gi with “King 2 Hearts”, Lee Jang Woo with “I do, I do”, Lee Jun Gi with “Arang And The Magistrate”, ZE:A’s Siwan with “The Moon That Embraces The Sun”, Jung Il Woo with “The Moon That Embraces The Sun” and Jo Seung Woo with “The King’s Doctor”.

All the nominees are very popular actors. From Lee Seung Gi who has a wide fanbase that spans across age groups, to Kim Soo Hyun who has had a great year, to idol group JYJ’s members Jaejoong and Yoochun, all these actors are strong contenders for the popularity award.

MBC limits the number of votes to one vote per ID, and a maximum of 3 votes per IP address per day. Hence the fans, who love their idols, make use of the IDs of their family members as well. MBC will announce the results of the voting during the live broadcast of the awards ceremony, which will be held on 30 Dec.

Lee Seung Gi has suddenly come under fire on suspicions that he’s dissed Park Yoo Chun in his drama.

After netizens pointed out that a line of dialogue from the April 12 broadcast of MBC’s The King 2Hearts seemed like it was aiming a blow at SBS’ Rooftop Prince, fans of both dramas have been pitched into a battle regarding the line’s original intent.

The dialogue appeared in the scene where Hang Ah (Ha Ji Won) dances to Bo Peep Bo Peep to make the sad Jae Ha (Lee Seung Gi) laugh.

Hang Ah put on cute bear paws to dance out her cute dance, but Jae Ha only started scolding her, saying, “Are you going to hit your stalker fans with those?”

The line, however, seemed to refer to JYJ, Park Yoo Chun’s group, which was involved in an incident in which the members had been accused of using violence against their stalker fans.

 The viewer boards of Rooftop Prince were swamped with posts about Lee Seung Gi’s line in The King 2Hearts, asking after the intent of the sudden reference to stalker fans.

Lee Seung Gi’s line probably wasn’t trying to be a direct hit at Park Yoo Chun and Rooftop Prince, but the fans were thoroughly ruffled anyway.

Before the Lee Seung Gi controversy, Lee Si Young started one of her own when she left a post on a DC Inside drama gallery (forum) that said ‘Rooftop Prince will catch up to The King 2Hearts’ and that she’ll ‘bet [her] wrists on it’.

She won’t be having her wrists taken away from her anytime soon because Rooftop Prince recently sprinted past The King 2Hearts, but The King 2Hearts fans have started coming up with movements to watch the drama on time for more viewership ratings, saying they won’t be leaving Lee Si Young’s wrists alone.

The battle between The King 2Hearts and Rooftop Prince is that fierce, and it’s getting more heated by the minute.

The King 2Hearts aired two episodes in a row on April 12, but its viewership ratings have been showing a definite downward trend, falling past those of Rooftop Prince. The King 2Hearts scored 11 percent and 12.5 percent in viewership ratings (AGB Nielsen Media Research) for an average of 11.75 percent on that day. Rooftop Prince, however, is on the rise with 12.5 percent, and KBS2’s The Equator Man is following suit with 10.8 percent.

JYJ’s Park Yoo Chun has begun the pursuit of Lee Seung Gi.

On March 29, according to AGB Nielsen Media Research, a global leader in television audience ratings, the March 28 episode of SBS’s Rooftop Prince received 11.2 percent of the daily audience rating.

It is 0.6 percent higher than the March 22 episode of the series which received 10.5 percent.

In the March 28 episode, Park and Han Ji Min had a date. Park made the audience laugh by acting cutesy and copying what Han told him to do.

Since the series received a slightly higher audience rating, it is narrowing the gap between MBC’s Wednesday-Thursday series The King 2 Hearts. The MBC’s series received 14.5 percent of the audience rating which is 2 percent less than the last series, with 16.5 percent.

Rooftop Prince, starring Park and Han, began it’s ratings competition against The King 2 Hearts and KBS’s Man of the Equator starting on March 21.

The series hopes to catch up with The King 2 Hearts, starring Lee Seung Gi and Ha Ji Won.

On the same day, Man of the Equator received 8.1 percent of the audience rating.

Lee Seung Gi and Park Yoochun, who are both singer cum actors, will be facing off directly in Wednesday-Thursday dramas in March.

Lee Seung Gi will be appearing in the MBC Wednesday-Thursday drama “The King” together with Ha Ji-Won, a story about a fictitious monarchy  that rules South Korea, and a satirical love story that unfolds between the “South Korean Prince” Lee Jae-ha and the North Korean special forces’ “Legendary Female Trainer” Kim Hang-ah.

On the other side, Park Yoochun will be working with Han Jimin, as the male lead for the SBS Wednesday-Thursday drama “Attic Prince.” This drama is about the crown prince of the chosun dynasty Lee Gak, who loses his beloved princess then travels with his consorts 300 years into the future to the modern day Seoul, to continue his unrealised romance from the past,s a fantasy-romantic comedy.

Park Yoochun, who is playing the crown prince is once again playing a role in a period drama after his debut project “Sungkyunkwan Scandal,” which received a lot of love.  Since the crown prince moves from the past to modern times, you will naturally be able to see his modern-day charm in this drama as well. This drama will show many comical moments of how the crown prince tries to adapt to the modern day, and develop a different type of time-travel romance.

“The King” will be broadcast after “The moon that embraces the sun”, while “Attic Prince” will play after “Please take care of us, Captain.” Lee Seung Gi and Park Yoochun, who are both playing “princes” will be facing off directly in these two broadcast stations’ Wednesday-Thursday drama slots.

Whether Lee Seung Gi or Park Yoochun will triumph in the early part of Spring (in March), is something worth looking out for.

Group JYJ has been voted as the number 1 Best Idol Star of the year by netizens.

In the “2011 Best Icon Awards”  that was held on the KBS homepage from 8 Dec till the noon of 28 December, JYJ emerged as number 1 in the “Best Idol Star Category”, a proof of their popularity.

This voting saw 4 categories, “Best Idol Star”, “Best Segment Of Gag Concert”, “Best Casting In A KBS Drama” and “Mission With The Highest Qualifications Of A Male”.

JYJ, with a total of 58,357 votes, beat Lee Seung Gi (53,560 votes), to emerge as the “Best Idol Star“. Much attention was focused on this intense competition between the “Nation’s Younger Brother” Lee Seung Gi and JYJ, with the latter coming out on top.
