Part III – The Music

Make Your Move Fans: The casting of Yunho in a cameo role has created quite a sensation. How did you decide to include him in the film?

Duane: I’ll be honest, the casting of Yunho was our partner SM Entertainment’s idea! They first suggested he do a cameo because he’s such an amazing dancer and performer, and they knew he would attract attention to the movie in parts of Asia. I had been to the SM Town concert at the Staples Center in October of 2010 (that’s actually where BoA and Derek first met!), and I saw TVXQ! perform live.

During their number, Yunho had this spectacular solo that I thought was one of the closest performances I’d ever seen to Michael Jackson. He was incredible. So once SM suggested him, I loved the idea, but the logistical part of getting him in the movie was going to be a challenge. We were shooting in Toronto and his schedule was super tight. Once we locked our shoot schedule, SM Entertainment worked hard to find a window in Yunho’s schedule where he could fly to Toronto. They found two days! He had only two days to be in and out of the city.

NappyTabs created the choreography in Toronto, and they would upload it to Yunho in Korea, where he learned the choreography. But we were on such a tight schedule, if there had been any delays at the airport, we would have had to cut the number, because we only had that specific location for a specific time. Yunho arrived on Wednesday evening late in Toronto, and he went straight to the rehearsal studio with NappyTabs and our dancers, where he rehearsed for several hours with jet lag. The next morning, he reported to set early to shoot and just killed it.

I’m not sure I’d ever seen a dancer work as hard as he did. Once I called cut, he would be ready to go again in a matters of moments. He was incredibly gracious to all our crew, who knew he was a big star in Korea, but no one really knew how big until he arrived on set – there was just this energy about him that was contagious. We’re lucky we have him in the film.

[TRANS] 130807 What Does ‘Variety Show’ Mean To TVXQ’s Max Changmin, A Top Idol For The Past 10 Years? (Interview)

TVXQ’s Max Changmin is turning into a great ‘entertainer’.

We recently met with Max Changmin on the set of KBS 2TV’s ‘Our Neighborhood’s Master of Variety and Sports’ and he seemed very energetic as he said, “My personality has gotten much brighter and extroverted.” Though he has been called the ‘Fool’ of the show and shown a completely new side of him that differs from his stage persona, Max Changmin is slowly but surely beginning to learn the joys of variety shows.

“Till not long ago, the first thing I felt was fear when I said, ‘I’m going to be appearing in a variety show’. Personally, I felt really scared and fearful that I was going to be regular on a show, ten years into my debut. Luckily, I was able to adapt to the show more easily because it focuses on sports. Sweat never lies. I believed that as long as the viewers could see my sincerity, and as long as I worked hard, I would succeed eventually.”

Some in the broadcasting industry have chosen Max Changmin as, ‘The MC in his 20s who could succeed Lee Seung Gi’. While filming ‘Moonlight Prince’, Max Changmin drew the attention of many for his calm and well-informed aura. For ‘Our Neighborhood’s Master of Variety and Sports’, he has even held cue cards to help Kang Ho Dong out. Critics say that his tall stature and exemplary image are perfect for him to become the leading emcee of a new generation. Add in the fact that he is one of the greatest Hallyu stars of Korea, and the potential he has to succeed as an emcee is limitless.

Regarding this, Max Changmin stayed humble as he said, “You’re too generous with your praise.” He confessed, “This was the first chance for me to see what variety shows are really about, and I’m so happy to be given the opportunity to stand next to and watch Kang Ho Dong, the nation’s greatest emcee who has worked in the industry for over a decade, do what he does best. I really look up to him and I have so much to learn from him, not only about variety shows, but also about having the right attitude.”

He also emphasized, “Though I still have much to learn, I will continue to do my best and learn as much as I can. I’m not that greedy about my position as an emcee, but that doesn’t mean that I will let this opportunity slip past my fingers. I want to keep moving forward, step by step.”

Max Changmin recently got injured during a river-rafting training exercise in the Gangwon Province when a rapid smacked an oar in his face. Though his lips had swelled to a point that made participating in the rest of the program difficult, he buckled down and kept going. His ‘dogged determination’ and ‘professionalism’ was praised by his viewers.

Like this, Max Changmin is doing his best, not only as a member of ‘TVXQ’, but also as an entertainer. Max Changmin ended with the statement, “Just like how I feel that my work is so worthwhile, I hope our viewers share that sentiment with me. And I hope that many people are inspired by my efforts and start to believe in themselves that, ‘Hey, if he can do it, then so can I.’”

[TRANS] 130731 Max Changmin Says, “The Show Has Helped Change My Bitter And Depressed Personality” (Interview)

Our Changmin has changed~’

TVXQ’s Max Changmin is currently busy training for KBS 2TV’s ‘Our Neighborhood’s Master of Variety and Sports’. Although he has a packed overseas schedule as a singer, he always works hard to complete his missions for the show and is reaping in great success as an emcee. He has won over his viewers with his hard work and effort.

Max Changmin himself is very happy that he was able to join the ‘Our Neighborhood’s Master’ team. During an interview with Newsen, Max Changmin said, “My life has become more enjoyable. I actually found it hard to approach others first and I used to be quite an introvert, but I’ve become more of an extrovert thanks to this show. Exercising and participating in matches together has helped form a natural camaraderie with the others, and I find it easier to keep an eye on those around me.”

Anyone who watches the show can see just how much Max Changmin loves his fellow teammates, and how hard he works for every match and practice session. One of his bowling matches in early July had viewers reaching out for the singer when he cried over an unfortunate loss. Though it was not aired, Max Changmin was crying so hard that he was unable to say his closing comments. The staff came to the decision to cut that scene from the episode.

Regarding this, Max Changmin confessed, “I had become close friends with the other guys like Kang Ho Dong, Lee Soo Geun, Lee Byung Jin, Alex and Jo Dal Hwan and I felt even more disappointed at the loss because I had worked so hard to prepare for the match. I had practiced so hard, giving up my breaks in between our concerts in Japan, so I felt even more upset that I lost. I really wanted to end the match on a high… I felt sorry to the others and I felt disappointed at myself. There were so many emotions running through me.”

According to Max Changmin’s close acquaintances, he is the kind of person who always works hard at what he does. Not even the smallest things pass by him unattended to. Because of this, he has felt an immense sense of responsibility about appearing on the show. Staff members who saw the ripped skin on his hands from bowling too much even said, “Your primary job is being a singer. Focus on that. Take care of yourself so that you can focus on your concerts as well.”

However, Max Changmin refused to give up his Japanese concerts or his bowling matches. He had always laid low during his breaks, but since beginning the show, he began going to bowling alleys whenever he had a moment to spare and kept practicing as much as he could. Max Changmin said, “Practicing and getting used to the sports made me feel more at ease with myself. I think that’s why the tears came after I lost. I think those tears were proof that I’ve gotten more comfortable with the show.”

The singer has gained so much through the show. Not only has he become close friends with people such as Lee Soo Geun, Jo Dal Hwan and Kang Ho Dong, and has currently become closer with stars such as John Park and 2PM’s Chansung. He has been meeting with Chansung for dinner often and they have finally begun to feel more comfortable around each other for the first time in years.

Max Changmin smiled and said, “The kid who used to stay at home and sit around every day is now sweating it out and moving around. It’s helped a lot with my personality. In the past, I used to feel very bitter and depressed. But participating in sports activities through the show has helped me release my stress faster and it’s making me much happier. I’m grateful to myself for taking on this challenge. I’ve found a new sense of vitality in my life.”

Hallyu Boom Boom! ‘Five Dome Tour concert in Japan’
Alumni Jung Yunho (TVXQ’s U-Know Yunho, Movie-Musical Major, Class of ’11)

“If you have a positive mind and work hard in your preparation and actions, you will be met with good results.”

Q. Please introduce yourself to our future and current Myongji University students and tell us what you’ve been up to.
A. Hello. This is TVXQ’s U-Know Yunho. Our Five Dome Tour in Japan began at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama on the 27th of April. Our last concerts in Japan were held from the 15th till the 17th of May at Tokyo Dome. Many Japanese fans came to our concert, so I was able to pour all of my passion into my performances. I believe that I was able to end the tour in success because of the attention and support given to us from Myongji University alumni and our fans.

Q. Please tell us about your future plans.
A. In July, we’ll be continuing our world tour in North and South America, and China. In August, we’ll be the first non-Japanese artistes to perform in Japan’s Nissan Stadium, the stage of dreams. This is something I feel every time I stand on stage for a concert, but the fact that our concerts give hope to so many people makes me feel so emotional. I believe that the success we’ve experienced till now is all thanks to the support of my fellow Myongji University alumni and the love of our fans. I hope to see you all soon as a great performer and a great actor.

Q. Do you have any advice for future and current Myongji University students?
A. I believe that the things we see and learn in school help us greatly in our transition to society. I think that you need to have the determination to see things through till the very end, no matter what you start, if you want good results. No matter what happens, if you have a positive mind and work hard in your preparation and actions, you will be met with good results. Most of all, you have to believe in yourself. To my future and current Myongji University juniors, always believe in yourselves and be willing to take on new challenges.

[TRANS] 130622 Kstyle Interview – JYJ Jaejoong, “Things He’s Gained From His Solo Activities… Gratitude To His Members And A Sense Of Curiosity Towards Music”

[TRANS] 130622 Kstyle Interview – JYJ Jaejoong, “Things He’s Gained From His Solo Activities… Gratitude To His Members And A Sense Of Curiosity Towards Music”

-Please tell us the highlights and what you hope fans will look forward to for your Asia Tour・Grand Finale, which will be held over 3 days from 24 June.

Jaejoong: I released my first solo album since debut, and have received a lot of love while on my Asia tour. During the Tokyo Dome performance, it was decided that the last finale be held in Japan. Because it’s the first time I am having a solo concert in japan since debut, I am feeling the pressure, but the anticipation is also as big. I want to present a good performance, and have a good time with everyone.

-The set-list was released leading up to the fanmeeting this time. Were the Japanese songs in it chosen by Jaejoong yourself? Are there perhaps any special emotions behind your song choices?

Jaejoong: I personally chose them myself. But I did ask the people around me to give me their recommendations if there are any Japanese songs which they like. I think my criteria was quite clear, I wanted so sing songs that would bring back memories for many Japanese. I wanted to choose songs that everyone in the audience could sing along starting from the first verse. Despite me being a foreigner, and despite the fact that I sing songs in a foreign language, I’ve always received a lot of support and love. So I thought I wanted to repay that love, by sharing the same memories with my fans. That is why I chose songs that have been loved by many people since the past.

– Ito Yuna’s “Precious”, Onitsuka Chihiro’s “Moonlight” and Ayaka’s “Crescent Moon” are all difficult songs for females. How was it like to actually since these songs? Could you share some of your thoughts or difficulties, or some things fans should listen out for?
Jaejoong: It’s difficult. Rather than being difficult because they are meant for female vocals, the songs themselves are not easy songs to sing. But after understanding the lyrics, and by thinking about the emotions the listener would experience when listening to this song, I thought that all I needed to do was to bring out those emotions in myself as well when I sang. The most important thing (to me) is, since it is a live performance, because it is a live stage, I want to bring even more happiness (to the audience).

-Do you usually listen to songs by Japanese artistes, or sing them at Karaokes?

Jaejoong: Yes, I often sing them. One of the songs I often sing is “Saiai”, which Yoochun sang in Tokyo. (T/N: The Greatest Love by Fukuyama Masaharu)

-Will there be any special events prepared for the finale this time?

Jaejoong: The first would be me singing 7 Japanese songs, that is the largest event. It is also the part that is the most important to me. And also, for the fanmeeting, I’ve had time so I’ve been able to prepare completely new things. It’s because I like talking to the Japanese fans and having little events. We are planning and enjoyable fanmeeting while taking this into consideration. Please look forward to it!

-You had a solo tour around Asia this time, was it not lonely without the members?

Jaejoong: It’s lonely. While doing ments or games myself, when I am suddenly reminded that the members aren’t beside me, I somehow feel extremely lonely. And when I’m in the hotel, I also inadvertently want to meet them. This is why after the concerts, the staff gather in my room and they make a big scene.

-Are there any differences doing live performances as part of your solo activities as compared to as JYJ? Could you share some of the things you actually felt or thoughts that run through your mind?

Jaejoong: There are differences, I think each has its own appeal. As JYJ, we can present our harmony and performance. i think that is the charm of being a group. On the other hand, when I am doing solo activities, I am able to showcase music that I like, and deeper emotions that I experience. I think that is the plus point. I think both have their own merits.

-”Mine’s” concept was that of a “dark angel”. How did that idea come about?

Jaejoong: “Mine” depicts someone who is being suppressed by some external factors, and how this someone tries to resist the things or people that are trying to dictate his life. The charm of the album is its strong sounds, which represent this resistance. When we had a meeting with the director regarding the production o the music video, the director said with a straight face that this was really a very powerful song. You are exuding fierceness towards the other party, but the real reason for that is to protect what is yours, to protect your field. We wanted to portray both sides of these feelings.

-Could you share specifically what are some of the things that you have gained through carrying out solo activities?

Jaejoong: The fields of music that I would like to pursue have broadened, and that makes me happy. I think one thing I have gained would be attempting new things. From that, I also felt a deeper sense of gratitude to my members for existing; While feeling lonely, and wanting to meet them. Also, I recently met my nephew, and for the first time since I became a singer, he said, “Uncle, the album is the best. All my friends around me say so too.” Because of that I also think that perhaps I may have gained more male fans.

-Any words for all the fans who are looking forward to the Asia Tour・Grand Finale?

Jaejoong: Yes. Everyone, I am already prepared, please also get ready to come and have fun at the performance. Come to the fanmeeting like you’re having a date with me, and I will present a performance for everyone that will soothe your hearts like a serenade. Please look forward to it!

[Question & Answer time with Jaejoong!]

Here are some questions from the editorial department, “Some things that have been on our minds”. Here’s our Q&A with the honest Jaejoong.

Q. The movie “Code Name Jackal” only recently began screening in Japan, but if you were to appear in your next project, would you choose to star in a pure romantic movie, or an action-packed movie?

Jaejoong: I really enjoyed working on a movie. It was really an amazing experience. I mentioned this in an interview in Korea as well, I would like to try taking on the role of a character that leads a wild life. Something more realistic. Other than that, I’d also like to try appearing in a production where there are heroes. Like hulk maybe (^^)

Q. Do you feel that you have rivals? If so, who?

Jaejoong: I don’t have rivals, I only have friends^^

Q. Given your tight schedule during the concerts, could you share how you’ve been managing your health?

Jaejoong: I run on the running machine (treadmill) every day without fail. Aside from that, I also like cycling outdoors.

Q. Jaejoong has beautiful skin! What’s the secret to maintaining good skin?

Jaejoong: Visit the dermatologist immediately once you have skin trouble. I also try to drink lots of water normally.

Q. The super-spicy dish that Jaejoong, who loves extremly spicy food, is hooked on recently is?

Jaejoong: I’ve been cutting down on spicy food recently, because I’ve been told that it’s not good for health.

Q. Jaejoong’s selfshots always become hot topic of discussion amongst fans when they are uploaded onto SNS sites. Do you have any tips for taking selfshots?

Jaejoong: Firstly, you need to use the best angle to take a selfshot. Other than that, I also think it is important to incorporate the story you want to tell through the photo well when uploading it to SNS sites. Photos with stories!

Q. What are some interesting places or good food that you’ve had while on promotions or tours or on private trips around Japan thus far?

Jaejoong: I had a lot of fun when I went on tour in Sapporo. I really like seafood, and the seafood there was really delicious. I like Winter, and I like the cold, so I really had fun when we had concerts in Sapporo!

Q. Are there any things you must definitely do or have fun doing whenever you are in Japan?

Jaejoong: Meet my friends in Japan, go and have ramen, drink beer…… Well, things like that basically. It’s also been a long time since I was last at the Yokohama Arena, so that makes me feel nostalgic as well.

Q. What’s your favourite Japanese word?

Jaejoong: It’s “Sorry”. It’s a polite word that can be used to express gratitude, and also used as an apology, or to mean “Excuse me”.

Q. Are there any particularly significant memories you’ve had with the fans?

Jaejoong: There are so many I could go on forever. There are so many I’m not sure where to start.

Q. Is there anything you would like to ask the Japanese fans?

Jaejoong: Everyone, are you having fun? Are you happy? Have you been eating well? Have you found a lover? Are you healthy? I’m the same as usual. And I am praying that everyone is doing well as usual too.
