…ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Dozens of National Guard troops have arrived to help an Alaska fishing town dig out from massive snows that have collapsed roofs, trapped some people in homes, and triggered avalanches.
Cordova is used to snow, but not like this season’s blanketing.
The Guard reported more than 18 feet of snow has fallen in the past weeks, although the National Weather Service did not immediately have a measurement.
“There’s nowhere to go with the snow because it’s piled up so high,” said Wendy Rainney, who owns the Orca Adventure Lodge. A storage building for the lodge — which offers fishing trips, hiking, kayaking and glacier tours — partially collapsed under the weight of the snow, she said.
“This is more quantity than can be handled.”
Officials said at least three buildings have collapsed or partially collapsed and six homes are deemed severely stressed by heavy wet snow.
The city has set up a shelter at a local recreation center, but said people leaving homes in avalanche-risky areas have been staying with other residents. Cordova spokesman Allen Marquette said the town also was ready to set up a pet shelter if necessary.
The town issued a disaster proclamation last week after three weeks of relentless snow overwhelmed local crews working around the clock and filled snow dump sites.
“We had no alternative but to declare an emergency,” Cordova Mayor Jim Kallander said. “It became a life-safety issue.”
Responders said Sunday that rain fell overnight, making for a slippery, treacherous mess in the Prince William Sound community of 2,000 year-round residents. The region has been pummeled by snow, but Cordova is of particular concern because there is no road access to the town, only boat and plane passage, said Maj. Gen. Thomas Katkus, adjutant general of the Alaska National Guard.
There have been no reported injuries, but bad weather has prevented the Guard from flying to the town, 150 miles southeast of Anchorage.
More than 70 Guard members arrived in Cordova via state ferry Sunday. About 50 of them will help clear roofs, roads, boats. The rest will provide other assistance. Three state emergency workers were already in town to help with emergency response planning. The state also is working on bringing in more heavy equipment to Cordova.
Katkus said Guard members will be on hand for up to two weeks. “This is an ongoing operation,” he told reporters Sunday.
An avalanche brought snow and debris down on a section of the Copper River Highway, the 12-mile link from the town to the local airport. State transportation officials said a secondary road was opened to two-lane traffic while crews cleared the highway Sunday.
Another storm that started Saturday also brought rain, which soaked into the snow, weighing it down.
Classes will begin later than usual Monday, but officials said students should go only if parents are comfortable with them venturing out.
Some roads have been cleared, but officials say residents also are being creative, traveling on foot and by skis and snowshoes.
The National Weather Service said the snow depth at the airport measured 59 inches before the rain fell, weighing the level down to 47 inches. Monday is supposed to be clear before another system moves in Tuesday, bringing more snow and rain, as well as winds as strong as 40 mph.
“This break in the weather is very critical and very fortunate,” meteorologist Don Moore said.

(T/N: Part 1 will be coming up soon…I’m sorry, this translator is slightly blind in the earlier parts of the day )
They have already passed the stage of trying to define each other, and now the presence of the other is just a natural existence.
Being able to chat with the two members of TVXQ, U-Know Yunho and Max Changmin is always an enjoyable thing. Always very cool and unreserved when talking about themselves, they are very much like their on-stage personalities, bold and unguarded.
When performing, their sweat is used to fill the stage, and when coming off stage the two youths smile as they return. Their “double-charm” is expected to continue this year.
Although we are familiar already with their on-stage images, how do they spend their time when they don’t have any activities? As expected, they have their own hobbies that they do during their free time.
Yunho : Recently it’s been really cold in winter, and I enjoy snowboarding. I also like watching movies. I like the feeling of peacefulness when watching and enjoying a movie.
Changmin : I like hiking or strolling around, and I like watching movies, musicals and performances.
There seems to be many moments where they would feel alone. Everyone has a different way to overcoming loneliness. When asked about how they overcome loneliness, the two men of TVXQ smiled a little.
Yunho : There are times that I feel lonely. When I’m done with all my schedules and get home, and planning to lie down on my bed, I sometimes get lonely. If I am unable to fall asleep, I read books. I slowly started to like reading, so I’m trying very hard to read lots of books. It seems like it helps me to improve on my flaws, and also allows me to widen my range of thinking.
Changmin : I’m the kind that gets lonely often. To overcome this, I listen to music and watch funny variety shows to make myself laugh.
Walking together on the same path like this, the two men have spent many precious moments together. To each other, the presence of the other person is more precious than anyone else. And like this, the two men must understand each other quite well.
Yunho : Changmin may be the younger brother, but be it work or on a normal basis, he always has a very calm side. He is the kind of friend who speaks more through actions than words.
Changmin : Yunho is the type who gets things done once he sets his mind on it. He is the type that is exceptionally motivated. I feel that this is his strong point, and something that I should learn. Also, when working, he will always maintain a professional attitude, and this is also another of his good points.
TVXQ’s unique fashion sense is also very famous. Their airport fashion, in particular, is often something that is noticed by the fans. However, their airport fashion gaining too much attention has become a burden.
Yunho : Fashion is one of the ways to express yourself. As a singer, you often show a powerful look on stage, but airport fashion shows a more casual and relaxed side, and is expressed through many styles. The airport fashion may be a burden, but compared to being a conscious dresser, I prefer to dress according to my own opinions, and it’s good that people like it.
Changmin : To me, Fashion is something that creates a character and image, and the way for you to express yourself. Airport fashion is actually quite a burden. (Laughs)
If one were to be able to gain the love of these two cool men, that would be such a great fortune. Let’s take a look at what types these two men like.
Yunho : If we’re judging by appearances, I like girls with long, straight hair and big eyes. In terms of artists, it would be Jeon Ji-hyun, as I have mentioned many times before. I like the type from the movie “My Sassy Girl.”
Changmin : Someone who is like the Japanese actress Takeuchi Yuko would be my preferred type.
In the new year, both men have different goals. This year, aside from Korea which is a given, you will see a TVXQ which is more active on a global scale.
Yunho : I hope to have an even happier and more meaningful year. Just like how we have been working hard in preparation so far, next year I want to be like a dragon and soar to the skies for all matters, and I will work my hardest.
Changmin : I happen to be born in 1988, which is also the year of the dragon. It would be great if there were many good things that happen this year. Personally, I would like to train myself harder, and it would be good if this is a year in which I can progress.
Every New Year, SBS Entertainment News will see an overhaul. To express our determination, and thanks to the support of the passionate TVXQ, we seem to be off to a great start. We hope that everyone can have a happy New Year together with SBS Entertainment News.
Yunho : We hope that you can deliver news in a great way, especially good news. As this is the year of the dragon, we hope that it is a year which you can soar. I, Yunho will work hard together with SBS Entertainment News, to make it a year where we can bring more smiles to everyone.
Changmin : This new year is the year of the dragon, so it would be great if SBS Entertainment News can soar to the skies like a dragon, and gain a lot of love. From now on, please deliver lots of great news and rich content, we will be supporting you! Fighting!!”

I am super late on making this, but I’ve wanted to type an account about my experience with Hurricane Katrina. Ah…that day was one of the most scariest in my life. It is one that I will not foget any time soon. Hurricane Katrina was my very first major hurricane, and I had only been living in southern Mississippi for about a year when she came along. Sure, before this storm I had to deal with tornadoes when I lived in Illinois and Ohio, and Tropical Storm Allison when I visited Mississippi earlier in life. But Katrina was different. My account may not be that good, and I may have missed a few things, but here goes nothing:
Ah…summer of 2005…I remember that year. I was living with my grandmother at the time. I heard TVXQ for the first time. It was the beginning of my senior year of high school. I hadn’t been really paying any attention to the weather that year, but I had heard that it was going to be an active hurricane season. Back in June or July, I remember my family cutting plywood boards to fit into the windows and such. For most of the summer, they stayed up. Then about one week after my birthday, one Friday towards the end of the school day, the intercom came on and started talking about a storm out in the Gulf of Mexico that may be headed our way and that we might not have school next week. I wasn’t really paying much attention to it though. But when I got home, I could remember hearing talk about preparing for this storm. It looked like we were going to ride this one out, so I figured it wasn’t that bad of a storm. I remember the previous year we had fled from Hurricane Ivan, but it luckly didn’t do any damage to our area. I can’t really remember what all happened on that Saturday–it was most likely preparations and such. But I do remember on Sunday morning that a call from the church we attended said that there would be no chruch so that people could have time to prepare. Now…if your church calls saying that it’s cancelled service so you can prepare for something does sound like something you should worry about. Also, mandatory evacuations were being administered for the coastal areas of Louisiana and Mississippi. I believe Alabama too, but I wasn’t sure. ^^;; Other family members also came over to ride out the storm as well. I do remember my grandomother saying that it would’ve been pointless to leave because this storm was big. Here is a clip from The Weather Channel from about that time:
She was HUGE! Not as huge as Hurricane Francis, but still rather big. And like the guy in the video said…things weren’t good. She was regaining strength. You see…whenever a storm enters the Gulf of Mexico’s waters, it gets a charge. ^_^ We have some of the warmest waters over here. But that Sunday night, before we went to sleep, I remember my grandmother saying that we needed to fill the bathtubs with water. She said we might need it for emergencies.
AUGUST 29th, MONDAY MORNING…. It was about six or seven in the morning when I woke up to the sound of the wind whistling outside. She had JUST made landfall when I had awoken. At first, things didn’t seem so bad. But then, the lights started blinking and I heard my grandmother shout “Turn ’em off!”. So my dad shut off all the power from the fuse box. Thank goodness there was light outside. We all made our way into the living room area and sat on the floor. I did try to look out the sliding door window at the rear of the house. It was really windy and raining hard. I could even see the roof of my grandomother’s neighbor’s house tearing apart. Their house was more of an A-frame, and couldn’t compare to a roof built more for a hurricane. But since it was coming down, the neighbors managed to make it to our house through the sliding door. Now our house was full of people (about 25 and that isn’t counting the 3 dogs that were there as well). So, things were alright for a while, we noticed some leaking coming from the den and other areas. Then we heard the celing in my grandmother’s bathroom fall. We all know that it was time to go. We were going to have to run down the street to a neighbor’s house through our the sliding door. But before that, the whole ceiling to the kitchen came down. We all freaked out! That was when all of us evacuated the house through the back door and ran across the backyard, and between my grandmother’s neighbor’s side of the house and RV. We had a little repreive from the wind as the RV provieded a little protection. But as soon as we were out in the open on the streets…things were crazy! The rain pounded down on us and we were soaked within seconds. It felt like needles stabbing me everwhere because the wind was whipping the rain. It was also hard to breathe because the wind was being literally knocked out of me. We were screaming a bit as we made our way to a neighbor’s house down the street. I could remember trying to hold on to my brother because he was being blown away. XD Even after the storm a few neighbors were worried about us because they heard us screaming. But we all managed to make it to the other neighbor’s house. The rest of the day, we rode out the storm with them. My sister and I were worried about the safety of our dogs as we had to leave them behind.
AUGUST 29th, MONDAY EVENING…. As the winds began to die down and Hurricane Katrina kept moving inland, some of the adults went back to our grandmother’s house to see what had happened. It was a while later when we were allowed to come back over that way. What took so long was that the street was flooded from debris covering the drains. In fact, debris was everywhere. Shingles from the roof were on the ground. One shingle was even stuck in someone’s door! Trees had fallen…the whole shebang. It was going to be alot to clean up. We went inside for a little while, and I was glad to know that our dogs were all still alive. The ceiling in my grandmother’s room and bathroom had a hole in it as well as the den. The room we stayed in suprisingly didn’t have any damage nor did our aunt’s or our cousin’s. The living room was alright too. The kitchen…well, like I said previously, the ceiling had fully collapsed. Thank goodness the roof was still standing. We couldn’t stay at our grandmother’s house that night, so we had to stay at our other aunt and cousin’s houses for a few nights.
AFTERMATH OF KATRINA…. Oh geez. The aftermath was terrible! It was hot, we had no power or water for weeks. Thus that was the reason for filling up the bathtub with water. The first to come back on was the water. Cleanup was a drag. I didn’t want to do it, but I needed to help. The big problems were ice and gas though. We had to make several trips to places outside of our city just to get gas. Ah, and let’t not forget the MREs. School was out for about a month for me, and yet I still had projects that had to be turned in, lol. I also remember going around and visiting other places that got hit hard (like Pass Christian). It was spooky. A whole Wal-Mart got gutted out. In fact, alot of places near the beach got gutted by Katrina. Lots of highways were out and there were many ‘steps leading to nowhere’. Heck, even the barges carrying some of our casinos had washed ashore! o.O Of course, you all may have heard about the disaster in New Orleans, but Mississppi also had it’s share of problems since we had to deal with the eye-wall and the hurricane-force winds the whole time. To sum it all up, we were all severely messed up from this storm.
Over time, however things got better. Help arrived (allbeit a bit late) and lives were being pieced back together. My immediate family and I moved out of our grandmother’s house to live in the one I currently do. All the seniors (including myself) managed to get back on track and we all graduated on time. You can still see some of the effects of Hurricane Katrina today, but it’s slowly dwindling. If anything, I really do hope that I won’t have to go through anything like Hurricane Katrina ever again.
