The reason why everyone should see Kim Junsu in ‘Elisabeth’
‘Elisabeth’, the large-scale musical that took the industry by storm last year, has returned. Like last year, Kim Junsu’s performances, which seat a total of 20,000 people, were sold out in five minutes.
Looking at the overall critiques by the public and media, Kim Junsu’s ticket power is astounding. But this time around, the expectation for ‘Elisabeth’ is different from that of last year, because this time around, many people are saying “‘Death’ by Kim Junsu, ‘Death’ for Kim Junsu.”
First of all, last year’s Tod role was given to three actors, Ryu Jung Hwan, Song Chang Ui and Kim Junsu. The first two actors are veterans who each have at least 10 years of experience in the industry. Because of this, Kim Junsu was constantly compared to them for their ease and presence on stage.
On the other hand, 2013′s ‘Death’ role was given to Kim Junsu, and two other young actors. Park Hyo Shin, who appeared in ‘Rock Hamlet’ in 2000 but is better known as a singer than a musical actor, and Jeon Dong Seok, who hit the musical scene through the 2009 production ‘Notre Dame de Paris’.
Not only does Kim Junsu have the merit of having been in the first round of ‘Elisabeth’ performances, but he has also created a strong foundation for himself in the past three years through ‘Elisabeth’, ‘Tears of Heaven’ and ‘Mozart!’.
During the press call of ‘Elisabeth’ that was held on the 25th at the Seoul Arts Center’s Opera House, composer Sylvester Levay showed his faith in the singer as he said, “I personally think of him as a close friend and I’m honored that Kim Junsu will be working with me for another production since ‘Mozart!’. His presence on stage is truly spectacular.”
Kim Junsu’s role of ‘Death’ is a fantasy character that draws off the fact that the real-life empress Elisabeth used to write countless poems about death. He is an important character who makes the life of ‘Elisabeth’ more dramatic and tragic.
‘Death’ falls in love with ‘Elisabeth’ when she falls from a tightrope at a young age. He is a mystical character whose gender can’t be properly defined. Though he approaches Elisabeth as a man, he approaches her son Rudolph as a woman. He follows her wherever she goes throughout her life, and tries to seduce her into taking the last dance with him because he is the only one who can give her true freedom.
The image of ‘Death’, who is both strong and soft, is similar to Hyde of ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ or the phantom of ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ when he appears on a lift. In the musical, he seduces both Elisabeth and her son Rudolph, but also has to draw the audience in and entrance them.
‘Death’ is accompanied by six ‘Angels of Death’, who fill the stage with sophisticated choreography. The ‘Last Dance’ number showcased Kim Junsu’s superior dance skills that he honed as a member of idol group JYJ.
During the press call, Kim Junsu performed ‘The Shadows Grow Longer’ and captivated everyone with a more dignified and charismatic stage presence than last year. During the press conference that followed, he impressed the reporters as he sat and paid attention to what the other actors were saying. It seems as though we must let go of some of the prejudices and negative feelings we have for singer-turned-musical-actors when it comes to Kim Junsu. One critic even justifiably stated, ‘Kim Junsu’s aura grows longer.’
Kim Junsu is currently facing restrictions on his activities as a singer due to a dispute with his former agency. During the press conference, Kim Junsu stated, “My longing for the stage is on the verge of desperation. I’m only able to show my energy through concerts or in musicals. As desperate as I am, I’m going to put all my power and energy into each and every scene.” The instincts he picked up while on stage, as well as the passion he has for what he does, will ensure that Kim Junsu’s charisma will have increased tenfold this time around.
One more thing, EMK plans to open the musicals ‘Marie Antoinette’ and ‘Dance of the Vampire’ next year and the year after, and it looks as though he may be in the running to appear in one of these shows.
Meanwhile, the big and small changes made to this year’s ‘Elisabeth’ is drawing the attention of many. The biggest change is that a new song called ‘The Dance of Love and Death’ has been added to the musical. As a song that was showcased during the Japanese performances of the musical, it will greet Korean audiences this year. Small details have been fixed to bring a new ‘Elisabeth’ to the music industry.
‘Elisabeth’ opens on the 26th of July and features Ok Joo Hyun and Kim So Hyun as the leading role of Elisabeth. They will be joined by Lee Ji Hoon, Park Eun Tae, Yoon Young Seok, Min Young Ki, Lee Jung Hwa, Kim Isak and Noh Ji Hoon.

JYJ’s Kim Junsu talked about what was different about this year’s ‘Elisabeth’ performances.
The musical ‘Elisabeth’ held a press call on the 25th of July at the Seoul Arts Center’s Opera House. The day’s event featured 11 scenes reenacted by Ok Joo Hyun, Kim So Hyun, Kim Junsu, Park Hyo Shin, Jeon Dong Seok, Park Eun Tae and Lee Ji Hoon.
During the press conference that followed, Kim Junsu talked about why he had chosen black hair instead of going blonde this year as he said, “It’s not as meaningful as it’s being made out to be,” and “Last year featured a very strong blonde image. Should I say that this year’s hairstyle gives off an Oriental feel for Death? Wouldn’t it be interesting to think of the two others (Park Hyo Shin, Jeon Dong Seok) are Western Deaths, and me as an Eastern version of Death?”
Kim Junsu also said, “I believe that last year’s performances were so loved so much because the story, music and lyrics were all so great. I think I was able to make such a radical change because I was backed by the success of last year’s performances. I think the difference between this year and last year is that the story has become a little clearer and easier for the audience to understand.”
He also added, “Another difference is that we’ve added a new song for Death.”

Obviously there were some restrictions on camera use. The important thing is hearing the songs and Junsu sang beautifully. 🙂

JYJ’s Kim Junsu opens his ‘Incredible’ Asia Tour in Bangkok, Thailand
“Junsu! Junsu! Junsu!”
On the 20th, the 3,000 fans gathered at the Siam Paragon in Bangkok, Thailand shouted these two syllables ‘Junsu’ as loud as they could.
When the lights darkened and the instrumental of his last album ‘Tarantallegra’ began playing, their shouts only intensified, switching quickly to ‘Hey! Hey!’ to go along with the song.
Although the song was in Korean, a language that is quite foreign to them, the fans followed along with the cheers to greet the night’s star to their country.
This set the scene for JYJ Kim Junsu (26)’s first concert in Bangkok, Thailand for his second Asia Tour ‘Incredible’.
Fans held picket signs that read ‘XIA Daebak (Big Hit)’, handed out by local fansites such as ‘JYJ Box’ and ‘Coconut Xia’, and packed the venue. A sea of red rises up and down as fans hold red fanlights, JYJ’s color.
What stuck out was the fact that the concert venue was filled with teens, middle-aged parents with their children, and Koreans living in Thailand.
The day’s concert was the first event since the singer’s ‘Incredible’ showcase on the 15th.
After greeting his fans in Thai with a ‘Sawadikap (Hello)’, Kim Junsu said, “I’ve decided to kick off my tour with songs from my first and second album. Thailand has more passion than any other place I know. I’ll go all the way today.”
With a video that showed him shyly admitting his feelings to someone, he returned to the stage with a pink suit on to perform ‘I’m Confessing To You Right Now, Okay?’, ‘Chocolate Girl’, that has a sound as sweet as its name, and ‘No Reason’, which featured an erotic performance with the female dancers on a sofa.
Though there weren’t any ‘eye-popping’ special effects, Kim Junsu filled the stage with ballads that showcased his amazing vocal talents with ‘Don’t Go’ and ’11 o’clock’.
Fans didn’t let a single moment pass them by, whether Kim Junsu was drinking water, or had his veins popping on his neck as he sang the soulful ‘Rainy Eyes’, or was wiping the sweat off himself with a towel.
Fans could also hear the singer perform familiar drama OSTs such as ‘Love is like a Snowflake’ from ‘Nice Guy’, and ‘Foolish Heart’ from ‘Chunmyung’.
At his fans’ request, Kim Junsu sang the ‘Gwiyomi (Cutie) Song’, starting with “1 plus 1 is Gwiyomi” and also performed Ayaka’s ‘Minna Sorano Shita’ and Song Joong Ki’s ‘Nice Guy’ OST ‘Really’ without an instrumental, which was met with thunderous applause from the crowd.
The short videos that had been prepared in between the performances were another sight to see. The road that ‘Singer Kim Junsu’ has walked down was shown through pictures from his childhood and trainee days, and Thai subtitles ensured that the fans would be able to understand the video. When a kiss scene with an actress appeared on the screen, fans would be heard screaming “NO~” from even the very back of the crowd.
The atmosphere of the concert was at its climax during the last song of the night, ‘Incredible’, which also happens to be the title song of the singer’s second album.
Kim Junsu ran up to the front of the ‘I’-shape stage and had both hands in the air as he got his fans to join along. All his fans stood up and shook their fanlights as they danced to the music. Some even left their seats and ran up to the fence in front of the stage to get a closer look.
Mrs. Apapat (48), who attended the concert with her daughter Tataraphun (20), said, “Both of us really like Junsu,” and “My daughter says she likes him because he sings so well, and I like him because he always does his best and works hard, which makes him a great role model for my daughter. Like how we came to this concert together, Junsu has bettered our relationship and increased the amount of conversations we share.”
Kim Junsu will move on to Shanghai, China on the 28th, and then move on to perform in Seoul and Busan.
“I opened my Asia tour last year in Bangkok as well, and I think I’ve finished on a high with a lot of energy. I received so much energy and strength from the audience today. I will work hard to continue that ‘unlimited energy’ that I received today in the other countries I visit.”

[T/N: My apologies in advance for butchering the names of the mother and daughter who were interviewed! Korean is not the friendliest language when it comes to deciphering syllables of names in other languages. If anyone can tell me the correct spelling, please let me know and I’ll fix it as soon as I can! T___T]
