Translation 110715 “Tears of Heaven” is The No. 3 Most Influential Musical in Attracting Foreigners — and What is No. 1?

[Trans] 110715 “Tears Of Heaven” Is The No. 3 Most Influential Musical In Attracting Foreigners – And What Is No. 1?

“Xiahzart” Kim Junsu has once again proven this year that he is the leading man in the hallyu musical scene.

Interpark revealed that for the first half of this year, among the top 5 musicals in Korea that attracted the most foreign visitors, Kim Junsu’s “Mozart!” and “Tears Of Heaven” took 1st and 3rd place respectively.

In this ranking, the project that attracted the most attention was “Tears Of Heaven.”

Composed by world famous musician Frank Wildhorn, and directed by Gabriel Barre, who won numerous awards for “Memphis,” “Sweeny Todd” and others, “Tears of Heaven” was a hot topic before it even started its run. However, due to its simple storyline and unconvincing setting, it was criticised as having “limited creativity” and being “an imitation “Miss Saigon.””

During then, there were critics that said “this musical is about a man who is looking for a pure love and humane “Korean Romance,” and although it has touching and emotional music as well as a creative stage, the weak plot is regrettable.”

A musical that seemed to lack a sense of completion and reality, “Tears Of Heaven” managed to take 3rd place in the foreign audience ranking. If not for “hallyu star” Kim Junsu, this would not have been possible.

Kim Junsu injected life into the simple storyline, and improved upon the sense of completion of the entire musical. His outstanding voice and mature acting skills enchanted the audiences. If not for him, this musical would have been normal, and not as spectacular as it had become.

The promotion for “Tears of Heaven” is especially meaningful because it is the only local (Korean) production that was recognised as having the highest foreign audience. In this reality where adapted musicals are the mainstream, it introduces the foreign audiences to an original Korean creative musical, which is a considerable gain.

To ensure the project’s quality and audience numbers, Kim Junsu is diligent when choosing projects to work on and participate in, and has earned praise for this. His choice to participate in a local creative production, and the energy he gradually injected into the musical is imaginable.

With Kim Junsu spearheading it, the growth of the musical hallyu wave looks positive. Musical production companies who are targeting the gradually growing crowd of foreign audiences have expressed that they will be expanding on the promotional efforts for the foreign crowd.

“There have always been audiences from countries like Japan, China and others that have come to watch hallyu stars, but that was before Kim Junsu showed his true power. And now he is the top sell-out guarantee in musicals.”

It is truly impressive that both of Kim Junsu’s projects were ranked as 1st and 3rd for the highest number of foreign audiences.

Translation 110712 Defying Castle Walls In Search of Golden Star Xiahzart

[Trans] 110712 Flipping Over Castle Walls In Search of Golden Star Xiahzart

To Kim Junsu, the musical “Mozart!” was an unforgettable performance he has had. During the earlier half of 2010, he had no activities since he had left TVXQ. When he was offered to act in a musical, he had wanted to reject the role, as he was worried about being in the unfamiliar musical industry. He tried to put himself in Mozart’s shoes. Mozart went with his father’s wishes, and travelled from Salzburg to Vienna, just to write music for the archbishop. Even though he was a genius, and lived a luxurious life, but that made him fell into deep misery and unfortunate.

The scene where Mozart left Vienna, flipping the high castle walls in search of the “golden star”, he finally lived for himself, and not for his father. Kim Junsu was moved by the song “Why can’t you love me”, sung by Mozart.

Finally, Kim Junsu found himself familiar to the singing and acting techniques in a musical; he perfectly displayed Mozart’s character. He felt blessed, even though he was tired. The audience was also much affected as they watched his performance; when Kim Junsu played the contradicting character of music genius Mozart, the audience laughed together with the happy Mozart, and teared when Mozart cried. When the stage curtains fell each time, the audience would do a standing ovation. This year, during the curtain call in “Mozart!”, he was reminded of that unforgettable moment he had during last year’s performance. The popular idol star Xiah Junsu has successfully transformed into musical star Kim Junsu.

Currently, Kim Junsu, who has performed “Mozart!” twice, is ambitious. Also being a member of JYJ, he would like to try acting in dramas and movies. He would be performing in another musical, which would be different from “Mozart!” and “Tears of Heaven”, and hopes that he would still be able to keep up with his dance steps. He hopes to take a step at a time, in achieving his own goals.

News Actress Who Played Junsu’s Counterpart in Mozart!……

[News] Actress Who Played Junsu’s Counterpart in Mozart! says Junsu Was the Exception to the Rule

Jung Sunah, rising musical actress who played the counterpart to Junsu in Mozart!, had an interview in which she mentioned Junsu in a positive way:

“I think I became known to the general public when I played the counterpart to JYJ’s Junsu. At that time my fans increased a lot.”

(…)

When asked (by the interviewer) whether she “has any complaints as a musical actress when actors without experience but have gained popularity on TV easily take the lead roles in musicals,” she immediately answered: “I really hate it.”

“I’ve come to wear colored glasses (with regards to matters like that). For those actors and singers who were cast (on musicals despite lack of experience) like that, one could perhaps say that they are just doing what they are commanded to do by their companies. But in those cases I’ve seldom seen them meld into the regular cast and have fun… Ok Juhyun and Kim Junsu were diligent and put in such effort that they were exceptions (to the rule). But there were many times that I wondered ‘why did they cast this person’.”

Translation 110630 Kim Junsu, “I Would Like To Act Out Musicals in Theatres Too.

[Trans] 110630 Kim Junsu, “I would like to act out musicals in theatres too.”‏

“Falling in love with musicals, next year, the year after next, I would like to act out musicals in theatres.” Moving onward from Xiah Junsu to Kim Junsu, he met us in a cafe at Cheongdam-dong on the 29th.

Upon talking about musicals, this new actor who debuted in musical field for 2 years would passionately discussed with us, but when facing burdensome inquiries, he would be alike to the idol singer who debuted for 8 years, displaying his experiences and confidence.

Within the idols who challenged musicals, Kim Junsu is definitely the topic. Other than the subsequent lead acting of great works, the tickets that were sold out within a short time, the high performance fee etc, were the topics of discussion.

Even though the raging topics, why did you decided to step in with musicals from the start?

“It’s just the right timing. Although I did received projects from movies, dramas and there are free slots in between schedules…. but compared to anything, music is still the most important. So I was thinking since it a must to have music, why not take a try at musicals? When I first acted in musicals, I did not think that I would end up loving it. (laughs)”

After the debut musical ‘Mozart’, you were asked to lead in ‘Tears of Heaven’, this simply is a follow-up victory.

“I seems to have slightly understood what musical is about until recently. In the beginning, it felt very tiring even though there’s no mistake made, now I’m slowly learning through the amicable cooperation with the other actors… and starts to notice the reactions of the audience. Thus the musical performances for every day is different.” He continued introducing the so-called ’3 seconds difference’ on stage. “There is a scene in Mozart where I followed the Baroness, how many seconds should I back-faced the audience after finishing my lines so that I can display to the audience the feel that I wanted? The most suitable timing is about 3 seconds. (laughs)”

Other than this, he was often pointed out that his delivery of lyrics was not as strong as professional musical actors.

“Singing in musical is totally different from singing songs. For example, the usage of ‘banding’ (a singing technique where the note was dragged and blended into the next word) was not appropriate. The lyrics has to be sang out one word by one word. Compared to other actors, maybe it was not easily differentiate but it would still be better that l changed my way of singing.”

As a musical actor and actively as an idol singer, do you feel that you have slowly became closer to any character?

“But if I were to stand on JYJ’s stage now and to sing with my way of singing in musical, it would probably be a torture to the members. Even my hand signals has slowly increased. (laughs) I think for me right now, it is to slowly forwarding towards the way of ‘Even if I was a singer, I’m also a musical actor.’ Just as though there’s a switch in between the two, where I can freely move around.”

There were a lot of controversies. Like the rumours of ten millions of performance fees and the ability to become the male lead due to the investment by the company (you belonged) etc. When asked about the question of ‘idol glamour’, Kim Junsu surprisingly gave a calm and outright attitude while giving an answer.

“I understand that the choir department actors were able to stand on stage after working hard for a long while. I received this ‘gift’ of being the lead actor after my hardwork as a singer, this is at least how my thought is. As for the high performance fee rumours, I think it’s not only in musical that there are such rumours right? No matter it be drama or CF, there were many issues for the receipt of fees that broke records too… It’s just that the musical industry was so bad and thus the unique appearance of such rumours, right?”

Do you have any contributions that you wanted to do or ambitions that you have in the future involvement into musicals?

“Next year, or the year after, I would like to act in theatres. If I can be ambassador-like and create the effect of supporting musicals, it would be a rather grateful thing. But to do till such, the first step should be having audience who watch, and to have the love of the public, then the public performance can be a success, and followed on by more investors. Therefore, the production company and actors will be able to create a more fruitful work, and afterwhich wouldn’t there be a possible promotion to overseas?”

Due to the contract issue between JYJ and ex-company SM, the broadcasting activities were restricted by their contract. (T/N: JYJ was not directly restricted due to contractual problems. Refer to legal news.)

“It’s currently still in an unclear state. Due to the difficulties currently, we just have to try working in other directions, this is very exhausting. If there were things we wished to do, we’d have to think about how to do it in another way, and then not to give up on any hope.”

He is currently a young adult of 24 years old, are there any plans for army enlistment? He jokingly replied, “When performing the story in ‘Tears of Heaven’, I ever thought, ‘Why not bring forward the enlistment, it actually would be not a bad experience, isn’t it!’.”

“I received a health check last February and of course it’s a must to enlist for army. (laughs) The results for the health check is 3rd grade (note: 3rd grade is for person who had injuries but still able to be enlisted in army and an approximate of 22 months.) There’s a bit of disappointment for the results. I’m a man afterall, and has the pride of a man, I thought the results will be of 1st grade. Hopefully I can be enlisted after maximizing the activities I can do.”

We asked about the greatest change after involving in musicals.

“During the empty period (lawsuit with SM), musical came to me, and now I only listened to music from musicals. I hope to become an actor who is able to inspire and touch the audience.”
