[TRANS] 130918 ‘Our Neighborhood’s Master’ Coach Lee Eun Woo Says, “5 Matches, 5 Losses? I Want To Applaud Them”

The 11 week-long journey of KBS2′s ‘Our Neighborhood’s Master of Variety and Sports’ has finally come to an end. The badminton rounds seemed to feel longer than any of the other sports matches, because the celebrity had hadn’t won a single match. Five matches, five losses. Though these are despairing results, more sweat was spilled than ever before.

In July, the celebrity team and staff entered the realm of badminton, not even knowing how to hold a racket properly. In two months, they have become players who could go against highly skilled amateurs and live to tell the tale. We met with Coach Lee Eun Woo, the mastermind behind the team’s rapid improvement, to hear about the behind-the-scenes stories of their journey.

ourneighbirhoodbadmintonourneighborhoodbadminton1

– How would you rate the team as a professional?
They’ve improved greatly over a short period of time. The lessons I held with the celebrity team is completely different from lessons I regularly hold. Because it was important to bring them up to a level where they could compete, I had to teach them a lot of things in a short period of time. I think we covered a month’s worth of teachings in a day.

– How much did everyone practice?
Three hours a day, three or four times a week. Some members even came every day to practice. We would start practicing together once I was done with all my lessons at 9p.m. Even I found it hard to play badminton till one in the morning in the blistering Summer heat. But I knew just how hard the celebrity team were trying, so I put all my passion into teaching them. They would ask me for lessons in the weekends, and they frequently contacted me to ask if I could rent out the gymnasium for them to practice.

– Who practiced the hardest?
I couldn’t really choose one person because they all worked so hard.

– Which member is exceptionally athletic?
Of course, it’s Kang Ho Dong. Every time he’s in the gymnasium, he can become so concentrated that it always surprises me. He’s exceptionally athletic and witty at the same time. Most of all, he’s very good at absorbing things quickly. He’s the kind of person who you can teach one thing to, and they’ll learn ten things off it. He’s played tennis for a while, and it probably wasn’t easy for him to get rid of his habits, but he’s fixed them or changed them to suit badminton. He’s quite a special athlete. There’s a reason why he’s the greatest wrestler of our time.

– Then which member is exceptionally unathletic?
Max Changmin isn’t very athletic at all. But I think badminton suits him more than the other sports categories. He also works very hard. Though he couldn’t visit the gymnasium often because of his busy schedule, he personally came up to me and asked me for a coach so he could practice by himself. Whenever he came to a practice session, he had that intense gaze that he has during matches, from beginning to end. It surprised me.

It’s the same with Chansung. When I tell him why he’s making the mistakes he makes after a match, he says, ‘I know, I know what I’m doing wrong.’ Watching him shed tears broke my heart. It’s because I know that your body isn’t always at the same level as your brain is. Badminton is a fast-paced game that requires a lot of practice so that hitting the birdie becomes a reflex, and they didn’t have enough time for that to happen.

ourneighborhoodbadminton2

– What’s the reason why Jo Dal Hwan and Lee Soo Geun couldn’t succeed?
I think Jo Dal Hwan and Lee Soo Geun were the perfect example to show that badminton isn’t a sport that you can improve in drastically over a very short period of time. Of course, the two people worked very hard. But I think it was that they just didn’t fit with badminton. It’s like how you can’t be good at every sport, just because you’re on the national team. Jo Dal Hwan had already sustained injuries in his shoulders and knees. I heard that he even had to get surgery done. Because badminton requires a lot of movement in the knees and shoulders, it must have hurt for him to come to practices. There are many cases where badminton players quit after getting surgery done on their knees or shoulders. Even if you rehabilitate your right knee after a surgical procedure, your left knee is bound to get injured sometime later. That’s how much you subconsciously think about your injuries. In Lee Soo Geun’s case, I think he suffered from the misfortune of changing partners so often.

– How important is a partnership in badminton?
About 40%, with the remaining 60% depending on skill. That’s how important it is. Most badminton enthusiasts have a partner who they’ve played with for a long time. If a B-level team who have played together for a while goes against an A-level team who have just met, the B-level team have a higher chance of winning.

– Who was the ace in the deck?
Hands down, Lee Man Ki. He’s an A-level player in his 50s. Though his skills may differ from that of an A-level player in their twenties or thirties, but he’s one of the most talented players of his age range. Because he’s been playing for a long time, he knows how to send the birdie to certain spots in the court, and he knows how to calculate moves while he plays. And the fact that he’s left-handed is a great advantage to him.

– But his results weren’t that great.
If an A-level player has to play a match with a D-level player, the stress and responsibility means that they can’t play to their fullest potential. If we had given him a partner at a similar level, he would have done better. If the Lee Man Ki – Nickhun partnership had stayed in the game, the results may have changed.

ourneighborhoodbadminton3

– Badminton was the only sport where the team didn’t get a win.
Though each sport was hard on the team, badminton is one that especially relies on experience. It’s not easy. In one way, it was pretty obvious that they were going to lose. It was impossible for them to win people who have been playing for so long. I always told the team, ‘Take it easy’. It’s also a psychological game, so the first people to gain a point are also the people who usually win. It may have been a stretch to make celebrities who had just started playing badminton to be technical experts. Even normal people need at least two years to master how to use their wrist properly. The most important thing for the team was to focus on getting the birdie over the net. In two months, the celebrity team were able to catch the opposing team’s smashes and defend themselves. Setting aside winning and losing, they were amazing.

– The members cried a lot.
If they hadn’t worked hard, they wouldn’t have cried. Even I felt like I was going to cry after the Jeju match. I felt bad because they had never won once. Though I knew why they had lost, my heart ached because they had put so much time into their matches. It would be nice if the viewers could know just how hard they’ve worked, but that’s something only I and the members know. Even the staff won’t know the extent of the team’s hard work because they were only there when they had to film.

– Which moment was most heartbreaking for you?
It was when Max Changmin and Lee Jong Soo suffered from a slump during their Busan competition. Though this is a variety show, they were getting stressed and suffering from a slump like real badminton players. It just meant that they wanted to do well that much. After losing their Busan match, they didn’t even go back up to Seoul. Instead, they went drinking and quite a lot to drink.

– Which member would you like to keep training with?
Max Changmin, Chansung and Lee Ji Hoon. I think they could do so well if they kept going. Max Changmin fits badminton quite well, and Lee Ji Hoon is athletic and strong. If they had slowly worked their way up from the basics, they could have done a lot better. They had to get into matches as soon as they could, so there wasn’t time for them to build up the basics. Chansung worked really hard, but he didn’t do very well because he didn’t have a lot of time to grow.

ourneighborhoodbadminton4

– All the matches are over. What would you like to say to the team?
Instead of giving them consolations, I’d like to praise them. Though they cried a lot, I don’t think they had a reason to. They did so much better than others would in that time period. I want to applaud them and tell them that they did well.

Singer Max Changmin recommended Han Seon Hwa to pursue dating in private.

During the episode of KBS2′s ‘Moonlight Prince’ that aired on the 26th, TVXQ’s Max Changmin gave Secret’s Han Seon Hwa advice on dating as an idol.

Max Changmin stted to Han Seon Hwa, “You’re at the age when you’ll want to date,” and “You should date, but only to the point where you don’t get caught by your agency.”

When Han Seon Hwa asked, “So have you dated people?” Max Changmin honestly replied, “It would be a lie to say that I’ve never dated anyone.”

To this, Han Seon Hwa confessed, “I haven’t had that much dating experience.” She continued to talk about the negative effects of appearing on variety shows when she added, “I shouldn’t have started appearing on variety shows. Because of variety shows, I’ve lost popularity and a sense of mystery.”

Meanwhile, ‘Moonlight Prince’ was graced by Han Seon Hwa and Yoo In Na as guests and they discussed the teenage poetry book ‘I’m Red’.

[TRANS] 130206 Max Changmin Says, “I Suffered Because Of Sasaeng Fans, I Received Psychological Counseling”

TVXQ’s Max Changmin confessed that he had suffered because of sasaeng fans.

During the episode of KBS2′s ‘Moonlight Prince’ that aired on the 5th, Max Changmin opened up and said that there was a time when he used to freak out when he saw students wearing their uniforms.

This was because of the hardcore fans who would follow him back to his house. Max Changmin confessed, “They could have just been students who happened to be in that area. But it was hard for me to deal with.”

Kang Ho Dong cautiously asked, “I heard that you received psychotherapy,” to which Max Changmin replied, “It was some light counseling.”

He continued to add, “I learned that psychological pain is harder to deal with than physical pain. It felt like everyone was staring at me, no matter where I went. I was a well-known person, but I felt like I had to avoid those people. It made me shut people out.”

Max Changmin was then asked, “Are you happy now?” and he replied, “Yes. I’m enjoying every moment that comes my way.”

Brave Brothers’ showed an understanding of Max Changmin’s situation. He confessed, “I had to receive treatment in my early 20s,” and “That was when I had just started my musical career, and I was having such a hard time. The diagnosis was that I was socially maladjusted.”

Meanwhile, Lee Bo Young appeared as the guest of the third episode of ‘Moonlight Prince’.

[TRANS] 130123 Max Changmin Paves The Way To Becoming The Prince Of Variety Shows In ‘Moonlight Prince’

[TRANS] 130123 Max Changmin Paves The Way To Becoming The Prince Of Variety Shows In ‘Moonlight Prince’

The MC who stood out in KBS’s new variety program ‘Moonlight Prince’ on the 22nd was none other than Max Changmin. Even though he was wedged between veterans of the variety sector such as Kang Ho Dong and Tak Jae Hoon, he made his presence known with his witty and unexpected charm.

He began by seeing Kang Ho Dong, who appeared in a Peter Pan costume, and saying, “You’re making us all uncomfortable.” With appropriate gestures responding to his fellow MCs’ conversations, he had the studio in an uproar with his silver tongue as he broke his princely and modest image. He stated, “I didn’t date that much when I was a student. If I were able to go back to middle school, I would meet as many girls as I could.”

He continued to draw people’s attention when he made a confession about his beautiful (?) deviation from his model student life when he stopped talking to his father for three days because his father was against him becoming a trainee and making his debut as an idol singer.

Max Changmin, who has been called a ‘Man above all other men’ by Tak Jae Hoon during the show’s press conference, showcased a silver tongue that completely differed from his gentleman image. He received positive reviews for his charm and wit that captivated everyone in the studio.

It’s impossible not to compare Max Changmin to Lee Seung Gi, who also started off as a singer and became the ‘blue chip of the variety sector’ through ‘Two Days, One Night’ and ‘Strong Heart’. Regarding this, Kang Ho Dong said in the press conference that, “He’s someone with unlimited possibilities,” and “He’s similar to Lee Seung Gi in that he also works hard.” Many are curious to see if Kang Ho Dong will help Max Changmin become ‘the next prince of variety shows’ through ‘Moonlight Prince’.

Netizens showed an interest in this new side of Max Changmin as they left comments such as, “Max Changmin has an unexpected charm”, “He’s a charming character who is a mixture of innocence and silliness,” and “What new charm will Max Changmin showcase in the second episode of ‘Moonlight Prince’?”

‘Moonlight Prince’, headed by the charismatic quintet of Kang Ho Dong, Tak Jae Hoon, Jung Jae Hyung, Brave Brothers and Max Changmin, centers its talks around the books chosen by guests each week. The show airs every Tuesday at 11:10pm.

[Trans] 130103 Kang Ho Dong’s New Variety Programme, The Reason Why Variety-Newbie Choikang Changmin Was Chosen

[Trans] 130103 Kang Ho Dong’s New Variety Programme, The Reason Why Variety-Newbie Choikang Changmin Was Chosen

New partners have emerged, in the form of Kang Ho Dong and Choikang Changmin.

The new variety programme that Kang Ho Dong is preparing with KBS will have its first recording on 12 Jan, and is expected to be broadcast starting 22 Jan at 11.20pm. It will be the follow-up of “Win Win”, which was recently terminated.

PD Lee Ye Ji and writer Mun Eun Ae from “Hello” will be working on this programme. Meanwhile, artistes including Tak Jae Hoon, TVXQ’s Choikang Changmin, Brave Brothers and Jung Jae Hyung are expected to appear as MCs. All the members aside from Choikang Changmin are all veterans at emceeing for variety programmes. Aside from appearing as a guest or panel member in variety programmes as a member of TVXQ, Choikang Changmin has never faced guests, holding a microphone, as an MC. As such, the news that Choikang Changmin would be appearing as an emcee in Kang Ho Dong’s new highly-anticipated variety programme came as a surprise to fans.

In response to this, representatives from the KBS Variety Department revealed during an phone interview with Newsen on the afternoon on 2 Jan the reason why Choikang Changmin was able to capture the hearts of both Kang Ho Dong and the production team. This representative explained, “Kang Ho Dong and the production team felt that an idol group member was required for the new talk show, but at the same time they didn’t want someone who was a familiar face or was already active on variety shows. They were also looking for someone of a certain “level” of eloquence. Through all that, Choikang Changmin stood out.” “In actual fact the production team also thought ‘There’s no way TVXQ would come and be MCs right?’ when they sent the request, but SM Entertainment gave the OK.”

However, it is true that the production team and Kang Ho Dong had their reservations as to whether Choikang Changmin had the qualities required of a variety programme MC. TVXQ has received much recognition in the fields of music and acting, but it is only with variety that they have not demonstrated remarkable growth. With regards to this, the KBS Variety Department representative stated, “After conversing with Choikang Changmin, I have realised that he is much more eloquent and interesting than people expect. Furthermore, he is a young man with a healthy and warm image, which have been determined to be very suitable for the variety show this time. I am looking forward (to his performance).”

[NEWS] JYJ’s Jae Joong Appears On KBS’s Radio Program For The First Time

[NEWS] JYJ’s Jae Joong Appears On KBS’s Radio Program For The First Time
Posted on December 23, 2011 by JYJ3

JYJ’s Jae Joong is appearing on KBS’s radio program for the first time after the group was formed.

In the episode of KBS COOL FM’s Choi Kang Hee’s Night Flight that will air on December 25, JYJ’s Jae Joong and Ji Sung will make a guest appearance and have a talk.

Kim’s guest appearance is to keep his promise with Choi who appeared together on SBS TV’s drama series Protect the Boss, which ended in September. He already finished recording at KBS’s radio studio on December 22. It is his first appearance on KBS after he withdrew from TVXQ and formed JYJ.

JYJ submitted an application for provisional disposition to terminate the validity of their contract with SM to the Seoul Central District Court in 2009. After they had the legal battle, they couldn’t appear on TV music programs. They only have appeared on drama series.

After hearing the news of Jae Joong’s guest appearance on a radio program, people responded: “I really want to see them on TV more often,” “Thank you, KBS,” “You all should catch the premiere!” “I’m looking forward to seeing you on Music Bank, as well.”

As many fans kept requesting for JYJ to appear on KBS 2TV’s Music Bank, a spokesperson for Music Bank once announced in a press release in May, “JYJ cannot appear on Music Bank because they haven’t released an album, yet. Also, the OST that JYJ have released is ineligible for the chart.”

By appearing on ‘Choi Kang Hee’s Night Flight’ on the 25th, it looks as though Kim Jaejoong and the rest of the JYJ members will finally have their wishes come true. The wall that KBS had erected between them and JYJ has finally been demolished. According to the radio production team, JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong along with guest Jisung had many fun filled conversations with DJ Choi Kang Hee. ‘Choi Kang Hee’s Night Flight’ starring JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong will air on the midnight of the 25th.

Editors Note: Poseidon

I held out on writing a review for “Poseidon” until I could get a better feel for the drama. This is not for children. The fight scenes, victim scenes, and etc. are quite graphic. There is bloodshed, men and women–and I gather that this is a rather complicated plot based upon anger and restitution for the murder of innocent people. Yunho’s role is short but is an essential part of the plot. I haven’t been able to fully grasp the intricacies of this drama, but when I feel as if I can actually understand it in its intent I will write again. For now–this is a PG-13 drama.   Momma Cha

JYJ’s world tour, which has finally completed its two month marathon, has been revealed.

The episode of KBS2′s ‘Live News Feed’ that aired on the 28th showed scenes from ‘JYJ WORLD TOUR CONCERT IN GWANGJU’, that took place on the 26th at 7pm at the Yeom Joo Gymnasium in Gwangju.

In the interview that took place before the concert, Kim Jaejoong talked about a happening in which he met Park Yoochun by chance at a bar.

Kim Jaejoong said, “Since the Busan concert, I didn’t have a single phone conversation with the other members,” and “But I bumped into Park Yoochun by chance three times.”

To this, Park Yoochun burst out laughing and said, “I was tired from filming my drama but I didn’t want to waste the spare time that I had, so I went out for a glass of beer with my friends. But there was Kim Jaejoong, sitting in the bar we had just entered. I was really surprised.”

He continued to add, “The owner of the bar thought that I had come with Kim Jaejoong, who had been sitting alone, so he took us all to his room without even asking.”

JYJ’s Park Yoochun is currently acting in MBC’s Monday-Tuesday drama ‘Miss Ripley’ while Kim Jaejoong will be taking his first steps into the domestic drama industry with the SBS drama ‘Protect The Boss’. Kim Junsu will be greeting his audience at the Seongnam Arts Center’s Opera House through the encore performance of the musical ‘Mozart!’ till early July.
