South Korea’s best-known export today is not pickled cabbage.

Instead, it comes in a sleek, pretty package and suits the tastes of people across Asia – especially young women – and increasingly the world.

Move over, kimchi. Come on down, K-pop male idols.

In the past few years, Indonesian teenage girls, like their peers across Asia and increasingly in Europe, have become devoted fans of Hallyu (Korean wave) entertainers such as Choi Si-won of Super Junior, Kim Jaejoong of JYJ (formerly a member of DBSK/TVXQ), SS501′s Kim Hyun-joong and many more.

Back in 2009, the era of Bae Yong-joon with his famous Winter Sonata TV series gave way to protégé Hyun-joong in the role of Yoon Ji-hoo in Boys Before Flowers.

Jaejoong’s Protect the Boss and Si-won’s Poseidon, produced in 2011, have captured the hearts of fans who watch the series however they can – cable TV, video streaming, pirated DVDs or on YouTube.

Asian countries, especially Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan, have turned out plenty of attractive young entertainers in the past, but these Korean men – stylish, well groomed and well built – fulfill a fantasy for young women of the very handsome boy next door.

According to psychologist Dewi Dewo, moviegoers want to see men who are good-looking but not intimidating.

“Why do sweet-looking boys sell? Because the trend today is for them. Even young stars from the West are cute guys,” she says.

Tati Winarsih, the author of Seoulvivor, a book on K-pop hot spots in Seoul released late November, believes that it’s only natural for everybody to want to see “beautiful creatures”.

“These girls really love those pretty boys because despite their beautiful look, they are still able to show their macho side, their manly character. They aren’t effeminate despite their beauty,” she says, adding that reality shows have helped the stars to reveal their true selves to their fans.

The dramas also sell Korea.

The comprehensive training system, according to SM Entertainment CEO Kim Young-min, is the secret behind the success of K-pop.

SM is currently the biggest entertainment agency in South Korea, with its stable of stars including DBSK, Super Junior, Girls’ Generation, SHINee and f(x).

“If a group concept is chosen, then the members start training their foreign languages, dancing and singing,” he was quoted as saying by Soompi.com. “I think the most important aspect of training is training a celebrity’s personality.”

“Creating” a superstar is not a cheap enterprise.

SM founder, Lee So-man, revealed how his agency spent 4 billion won (S$5.1 million) grooming the original five members of DBSK, according to Chosun.

The amount doubled as the group – named the best second-generation K-pop band from their 2004 debut until they splintered into DBSK and JYJ in 2009 following a legal dispute – started producing their album and doing promotions.

The enormous investment pays off: The artists, once successful and popular, are veritable money machines.

According to one estimate, the Hallyu may have generated as much as US$4 billion in sales in 2011, a 14 per cent increase from the previous year. The number is likely to grow given the high demand for more concerts and fan meetings overseas.

NEWS 110929 TVXQ’s Jung Yunho May Return To Drama “Poseidon”

[News] 110929 TVXQ’s Jung Yunho may return to drama “Poseidon”

TVXQ’s Yunho has received enthusiastic response through his special appearance as Marine Police Special Forces Tactics Team leader Kang Eunchul in KBS’s new drama series “Poseidon” through the first 4 episodes. Although his character has exited the drama, it is expected that there will be a comeback.

Yunho’s last appearance in “Poseidon” was in the 4th episode broadcast on September 27th. Because Yunho was not a fixed cast member and only had a special appearance, he appeared in a glamorous fashion in the initial parts of the drama and then bid goodbye to the audience.

His appearance in “Poseidon” is Yunho’s comeback to the drama industry in 2 years after MBC’s “Heading To The Ground” in 2009. As a result, the anticipation of his fans and other netizens were huge. As a singer and member of TVXQ, he had reached the pinnacle position, but as an actor, it remains a fact that his activities were minimal. Particularly, in light of the fact that fellow TVXQ member Changmin had made his acting debut through “Paradise Ranch,” the anticipation for Yunho could only increase.

Fortunately, Yunho has received good reviews through his brilliant visuals and action scenes in “Poseidon,” as well for his stable acting ability. However, what is a pity at this stage is that Yunho is leaving the drama through his last appearance in the 4th episode. Accordingly, a portion of viewers showed responses such as, “We plead for an increase of Jung Yunho’s part,” “We want to hear more about Jung Yunho, who provided the twist in the drama.”

Fortunately, the production crew has revealed the possibility of Yunho re-appearing. “Poseidon” Kim Seungmo PD hinted, “It is possible that Yunho will re-appear in the latter part of ‘Poseidon’ as his character Kang Eunchul. We have set aside some room for that possibility.”

Particularly, the production crew explained that Kang Eunchul’s character is a main role, which straddles between good and evil. This allow the drama to smoothly go on. Kang Eunchul and Choi Heegon, the head of the criminal organization, got entangled, and constrained by unforeseen circumstances. In the 4th episode, Marine Police Special Forces Tactics Team leader Kang Eunchul abruptly left the country, leaving behind many questions.

[News] Jung Yunho, Appearing Only Until the 4th Episode of “Poseidon”, Netizens are Already Lamenting That It’s a Pity

[Note: There are potential spoilers in this article. If you have not watched Yunho’s appearance in Poseidon, make sure to catch Episode 1 here and Episode 2 here!]

When it was announced that Jung Yunho, who is making a special appearance in “Poseidon”, would soon be departing from the show, netizens have started sighing that it is a pity.

Jung Yunho is currently making a special appearance in KBS2 TV’s new Monday-Tuesday drama “Poseidon” as a Marine Police Special Forces Tactics Team leader, Kang Eun Chul. In the drama, Jung Yunho and Choi Siwon, who is acting as Kim Seon Woo, are together helming the first part of the drama.

Initially, although it was known that Jung Yunho’s special appearance would only be a small role, as expected, due to his impactful role, when the drama actually started airing, he became responsible for being one of the pillars of the drama through a role that is as important as that of the main leads. In reality, he and Choi Siwon, who are from the same company, had displayed a spectacle through their various actions in the fighting scenes.

In the first episode, Jung Yunho entered with a bang through an action scene in the air. For the 2nd episode broadcast on September 20, to rescue his colleague Kim Seon Woo when they were dashing through enemy premises, he got shot by a gun and suffered injuries. With his injured body, he was also held hostage by the enemies.

However, before the drama started, it was known that Jung Yunho would only be appearing until the 4th episode, so sighs of pity have arisen. Netizens lamented that it was a pity to see him off the drama soon, “Oh no. The Kang Eun Chul who will be appearing only up till the 4th episode is awesome”, “Yunho is a small role?”, “I want to be the one holding him hostage“, “Is this Ho-seidon?“, “If I fall in love with Kang Eun Chul, will it be the end of me..“, “It’ll be great if he stayed till the end”.

NEWS Choi Siwon Praised, “U-Know Yunho Is A Handsome Hyung and Senior

News] Choi Siwon Praised, “U-Know Yunho Is A Handsome Hyung and Senior”

Choi Siwon expressed his thoughts for filming with TVXQ for major scenes in both ‘Athena’ and ‘Poseidon’ during the production ‘Poseidon’ press conference held on the 15th at Seoul Gangnam’s Convention Diamant.

Choi Siwon expressed, “The most important scene in Athena was filmed with Changmin and this time in Poseidon for an important scene to account for the storyline, it was filmed with Yunho hyung. In fact, today was Yunho hyung’s last filming and after filming through the night, he immediatly went to Japan for his Japanese schedules. It was touching to me, thus I left a message on my Twitter.”

Choi Siwon wrote on his Twitter on that morning, “Yunho hyung who acted as Kang Eun Chul. One day he’s in Japan, another day he’s in America. No matter how difficult the schedules were, he would say to the director to do it one more time after each scene! The passionate senior and hyung. Please applause for such a Yunho hyung! You have worked hard!”

He said, “As there are a lot of scenes and a tight schedule, filming was done without any time for a rest. But Yunho hyung has never complain and everytime his own scenes were done, he would sit by the monitor and said, ‘Please let me film it again.’ It was endearing to see such a hyung and therefore when he has completed his last scene, I applauded him loudly.”

“After this collaboration, I had this new feeling; From a dongsaeng’s point of view, Yunho hyung is a handsome hyung and senior. When we stood together on a family stage, it is as though he emits light charismatically. Now I am thinking if there would be a day we could film a work together.”

U-know Yunho acted as the Maritime Police Tactics team leader Kang Eun Chul in his special appearance in ‘Poseidon’. He is an outstanding highly principled person who have gained recognition and is a rival to rule-breaker Kang Seon Woo (Choi Siwon) who is from the same Special Force team.

Choi Siwon and Yunho’s deep friendship in real life was the complete opposite in the drama. Seon Woo was the ace member of Maritime Special Force but lost his team mates in a mission and was thus demoted. He was then transferred to coast guard team 9 after three years.
