[Trans] 111105 JYJ Kim Junsu : “I’m Surprised And Thankful That Many Fans In Berlin Know Us”

JYJ member Kim Junsu expressed his feelings about holding solo concerts in Europe.

On the afternoon of the 5th of November, a day before JYJ’s concert in Berlin, Germany, Kim Junsu spoke to YTN TV’s “Newswide” via a live telephone broadcast and said, “Because we’ve already performed once in Barcelona, the nervousness and excitement we felt then has carried through (to our Berlin concert).”

When asked if he “felt any hints of JYJ’s popularity in the country,” Kim Junsu replied, “Although I wasn’t able to go sightseeing a lot, I did manage to walk around a little. I was very surprised and thankful to see our posters up around the city and to have more people recognize me than I’d expected. This makes us want to work harder and present an even better side of ourselves to everyone.”

He also added, “The reaction we received in Spain was as passionate as the country itself. I believe it was more of ‘those fans drawing forth a greater strength from us than we thought we had ‘ than a product of us working really hard.

JYJ, who completed their solo concert in Barcelona’s Palau Sant Jordi on the 29th of October, will be holding their next concert in Berlin’s Tempodrom on the 6th of November.

Translation 111031 What Does The Spanish Media Think Of JYJ?

[TRANS] 111031 What Does The Spanish Media Think Of JYJ?

The local media of Spain is showing great interest in JYJ’s European debut. We asked them questions about what they think of JYJ and K-Pop.

At JYJ’s interview with the press on the morning of the 29th, the reporters gave JYJ a favorable review. They believe that it is an undeniable fact that the K-pop market will continue to expand, and that Korean singers are winning Europeans’ hearts with their singing and dancing skills.

Time out BCN reporter Joseph Maria Saria stated, “K-pop’s popularity has risen, and more people want to know more about it,” and “Actually, I was surprised to hear that K-pop singers would be performing in Barcelona. I was able to meet many fans as I covered the concert and I found out that they are an amazing team. It was great to meet them through today’s press conference and I can’t wait to see what they do in the future.”

When asked ‘What do you think JYJ’s strengths are?’, the reporter replied, “Above all, they’re great performers and they have an image that appeals to Europeans. In Spain, where it’s hard to find dance singers, JYJ’s intense performances are enough to attract the attention of the youth.

Asian Club’s Mari Carmen and Donaire Ruiz also commented that K-pop’s future in Europe is bright.

They stated, “These days, K-pop’s popularity is rising amongst the younger generation all over Europe. But you can only buy albums online and there is a limited supply that is shipped to Europe. We will help the K-pop market expand here by covering this concert and raising people’s interest in K-pop.”

When asked, ‘Has Korea’s image changed in the eyes of Europeans because of the K-pop craze?’, the two people said, “Listening to K-pop, the younger generation now want to visit Korea, are curious about the Korean culture and have begun wanting to learn Korean. Most of the articles that could be found in Europe before the K-pop craze began were negative articles related to North Korea’s nuclear weapons, but now, articles about K-pop have increased and people are beginning to think of Korea in a more positive manner as they search for articles on Korea and begin to learn about the country. JYJ’s Spanish concert holds a special meaning for Spain’s Korea fanatics as the nation has become JYJ’s starting point for their European tour.”

We asked Catalunya Radio’s Tatiana Alvarez to compare K-pop and J-pop.

She said, “J-pop has unique rhythms and melodies. K-pop’s beats are similar to that of pop music yet it still has its own Korean characteristics. The familiar yet new feel of the songs is what I believe is appealing to the younger generation.”

Regarding the reason why she was covering JYJ’s concert, Hearst Sociedad y Corazon’s Maria Jose emphasized, “These days, I’ve felt that the musical preferences of the younger generation has changed. I wanted to see if K-pop played a part in that change. Also, it’s quite unusual to see a singer from a country that isn’t well-known in Spain to come here to hold a concert.

When asked, ‘Is K-pop growing in Europe?’, she said, “The younger generation of Spain began taking an interest in Asian cultures, which are harder to experience here than European cultures. One aspect of those new cultures was K-pop and as people begin to learn more about Asian cultures, K-pop will become more known and influential. But at this moment, it isn’t a grand spectacle yet. To be honest, I didn’t know much about JYJ before I came here. But what’s important is that K-pop is very upbeat and full of charm.”

The Spanish reporters all asked JYJ the same question of if they think they can be successful in Europe. To this, JYJ replied, “We don’t think there are as many of our fans in Spain as there are in Asia. That’s quite obvious. But we’re extremely grateful of and surprised by the fact that our fans here have been supporting us from halfway across the world. We’re so glad to be in Spain, we’re excited about today’s performance, and as this is our first European performance, it will stay with us for a long time. We think our success depends on what we consider being ‘successful’. We want to succeed. For us, the measure of success will be whether or not our fanbase here increases in size through attending our concert and listening to our songs.

The JYJ press conference ended in success with more than 30 Spanish reporters showing up to interview the group.

Translation 111031 JYJ Spearhead The Opening Act Of Their European Debut With K-Pop

[TRANS] 111031 JYJ Spearhead The Opening Act Of Their European Debut With K-Pop

At their first solo concert in Spain, JYJ captivated their European fans with their musical performances. This became JYJ’s small but meaningful and fruitful opening act of their European debut.

On the 29th at 9:15 (Spanish time), JYJ held the ‘JYJ EUROPEAN TOUR CONCERT 2011′, a two-hour extravaganza featuring numbers from the group’s worldwide album and Korean album ‘In Heaven’, at Barcelona’s POBLE ESPANYOL.

Regardless of the chilly weather, JYJ donned short-sleeved t-shirts and repaid the 3,000 or so audience members with a satisfactory performance. The fans cheered and made sure they didn’t miss a single moment till the end of the concert.

Also, JYJ seemed to passionately throw their hearts and soul more fully into this performance than usual, as if they were taking into consideration the fact that the acoustics weren’t great because of the fact that it was an outdoor performance.

JYJ’s concert began 15 minutes later than it was supposed to. When JYJ appeared in white suits amidst a cloud of thick smoke, the fans began screaming and shouting.

JYJ began singing ‘Empty’ as their opening number and their fans followed along. Dancing in sync with their Spanish dancers, JYJ completed their performance of ‘Empty’.

JYJ gave a short greeting in Spanish. They then promised in Korean, “We’ve kept our promise with our fans. We’ll work hard to create a great performance. We’ll create lots of opportunities for you all to see JYJ often.”

JYJ then sang ‘Pierrot’, ‘Ayyy Girl’, and ‘Be My Girl’ to get the audience even more pumped up. As it was a performance without any special guests, videos and songs of JYJ would play when JYJ left the stage to change outfits.

After changing from white to black suits, JYJ sang ‘I Love You’ from their ‘The Beginning’ album. While singing ‘I Love You’, Junsu showcased his dancing skills with the Spanish dancers.

The individual performances stood out as well.

Jaejoong sang ‘I’ll Protect You’ from the drama ‘Protect the Boss’. Junsu sang a rendition of ‘You are so beautiful’, which was used as the theme song of ‘Scent of a Woman’, while Yoochun sang ‘Found You’ from ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’, which he also starred in as the main character.

Though JYJ are not fluent in Spanish, they didn’t forget to say ‘Gracias (Thank you)’ to their fans after every song.

JYJ’s volubility was still kicking. When Junsu asked the other members if they knew any Spanish words, Yoochun sang, “Besame Mucho(Kiss me).” Hearing this, Jaejoong said, “Te quiero (I love you),” while Junsu spoke for the team as he said, “Os queremos (We love you).”

Not willing to lose in this battle, Yoochun said, “Besame te quiero” and had the 3,000 audience members laughing and cheering.

The stages that followed were extravagant. JYJ sang a medley of ‘I.D.S’ and ‘Be the One’ with lasers for special effects.

When they sang ‘Nine’ and ‘Mission’, JYJ changed outfits again and made sure to give their fans as much fan service as they could.

JYJ said, “If we’re able to come back to Spain again, we’ll work hard to provide a better performance than today’s. Please keep loving JYJ.”

Singing ‘In Heaven’ and ‘Get Out’ as their encore numbers, JYJ completed their jam-packed, two-hour concert. The fans found it hard to leave the venue as they stood, wanting more. JYJ ran back on to perform the remix version of ‘Empty’ to thank their fans for waiting in tents two days before the concert to see JYJ.

[News] 111104 JYJ Targeting Europe – Why it is Praiseworthy?

[News] 111104 JYJ Targeting Europe – Why it is Praiseworthy?

“We’re hungry to show you what a real World Tour is!”

Group JYJ is the first singer of Republic of Korea who succeeded a solo concert in Spain. On the 29th Oct (local time) JYJ had a brilliant concert at Poble Espanyol, Barcelona, in front of 3000 people which didn’t include only Spanish fans but also other European fans from France, Netherlands, Switzerland, etc.

This concert was indeed a challenge. Although among domestic netizens, there were different opinions regarding the number of audience, the meaning and value of JYJ’s challenge are not going to fade. It was hard to find a reputable promoter for a concert of Korean artist. This is reality. For this concert, JYJ’s agency C-Jes Entertainment has directly worked on it from A to Z and has had to overcome several obstacles.

Europe is like a wasteland. For a Korean artist to hold a solo concert in Spain, it was full of burdens and problems that general public couldn’t imagine of. Moreover, it wasn’t a concert planned with participation of various artists from a large company but a fruit achieved by just one team. Therefore, the challenge is praiseworthy enough itself and we can’t help praising its meaning.

If we must compare numerically, the number of attendees was of course humble. They are JYJ who could mobilize tens of thousands of audience if the concert was held in Korea or Japan. Just look at the concert in Japan which was held before European tour, they sang in front of 40,000 spectators per day, so 80,000 in total. But in the strange land of Spain, they stood in front of thousands of spectators. Even so, JYJ has brought off a more elated stage than ever. The press that has directly attended the concert and the officials agreed that “Although they have stood in front of tens of thousands of fans just a few days ago… they really tried their best, without low-spiritedness or fear.”

The more praiseworthy thing is their ultimate goal to break through into Europe.

Representative of C-Jes Entertainment, Mr. Baek Changjoo had a meet up with Osen in Spain. He described JYJ’s ultimate goal to become World Star, “Our final goal is to achieve a real world tour. Even in Europe, large companies have brought large-scale concerts to Paris (France), London (UK), etc. But JYJ is facing a new challenge by starting a solo concert in Spain and Germany, countries where the embers of K-pop were just about to fire. Our dream is to eventually hold a real meaningful world tour encompassing all Asia, America and Europe. Through this European tour, we want to verify our potential and to make this an opportunity to introduce K-pop more to Europeans. I think a real world tour is clearly possible if we can make it in South America too after this.”

He also added with firm determination, “If a foreign artist can mobilize 10,000 spectators for a solo concert, it could be called great success. We aim to hold a world tour including Europe once a year, every time we release an album and to do a showcase in Europe in the future.”

Translation 111103 JYJ Hitachinaka Concert was Introduced in A Japanese CS TV Program

[Trans] 111103 JYJ Hitachinaka Concert was Introduced in a Japanese CS TV Program Eng subbed

T/N: This program (Kan-tame! POP) was broadcasted in Fuji TV CS network (Skyperfect TV & Cable TV) on Nov 1.

“In Heaven”, the new album of JYJ, which was released in Korea in Sept, is causing repercussions.

Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu, who left Tohoshinki because of their problems with the management company, made a new unit JYJ. Though they turned their back to the company and made a new start, the lawsuit with their previous company is still going on, so they were not able to hold live concerts.

In the new album, the members themselves composed and wrote the lyrics for most of the songs, they were participating positively to the production of the album. However, one of the songs in the album “Pierrot” was judged ineligible to broadcast by KBS, and had restrictions in their promotions.

(T/N: the lyrics of Pierrot)

The “p.s.m” phrase in the lyrics is said to be the initials of the President of their previous company, and it was interpreted that the lyrics was slandering an individual person. Thus, KBS judged the song ineligible to broadcast.

They were restricted from appearing in music programs not only in Korea but in Japan, too, and it was doubtful that events would be held. Their difficult situations were continuing for months. Under such difficult circumstances, JYJ’s event in Japan was held for two days without any special publicities. In the venue in Ibaraki, many fans gathered from all over Japan. According to the official announcement, the number was 80 thousand in 2 days!

Fan 1: (T/N: introducing her own name)
Fan 2: (T/N: introducing her own name) I hope that someone can make an environment so that they could promote freely in Japan.
Fan 3: I can feel that they are doing their best even under the current severe conditions, so I would like to support them as long as I can.
Fan 4: I feel that the connection between JYJ and the fans are very strong.
Fan 5: I hope that we can move forward with their love, and also with our love.

For the Japanese fans, the live concert and the new album were received with a flood of emotions. That may speak for the fact that the pre-order for “In Heaven” exceeded over 300 thousand. The album increased its sales, so that the shops had to make a special counter on the day of the release.

Yamamoto: We received a message from a JYJ fan. May I introduce it here?
Furuya: Yes, please.
Y: Sesami-san, 50 years old, a lady. Thank you very much. “I am always enjoying the broadcast. At last, JYJ released their Korean album! Though they haven’t done any promotions, the pre-order exceeded 300 thousand. That means, they are not only popular, but also have the real ability.”
F: It was the hot topics before release that the pre-order exceeded 300 thousand. If the 300 thousand sales is the actual number, the album will be the highest selling album in Korea this year. Of course there are gaps between the shipment and the actual sales number, so we do not know what the final results will be, but it means that the album is in high demand.
Y: Sesami-san also says that she would like to support JYJ’s activities in Japan, but their music videos are not broadcasted, and maybe the fans should feel impatient… I thought so, looking at her message.
F: Basically, their problem is not solved. In this stage, the promotions in both countries may be difficult in many cases.

TRANSLATION 111101 Influential Spanish Paper Praises JYJ, “3-Man Justin Bieber Appears”

[TRANS] 111101 Influential Spanish Paper Praises JYJ, “3-Man Justin Bieber Appears”

On 29 October, the famous Spanish daily paper “El Mundo” published a report about the JYJ Concert in Barcelona, Spain and has become a hot topic. The article, which was published on 29 October (the day of the concert) not only introduced JYJ, but also expressed their anticipation for this Spanish concert.

This article from 29 October introduced them as “JYJ, the boyband that shook Korea” and used “A 3-man Justin Bieber” as the headline to talk about JYJ’s album and details about their Europe concerts.

Also, the article mentioned that “The album used to break into the American market, which Kanye West participated in the production of, sold over 500,000 copies”, “with the release of their new album “In Heaven,” they are touring Europe” and others. In the article, their description about each of the members’ individial charms gained much attention as they wrote “Junsu, Yoochun and Jaejoong are like Justin Bieber, very handsome, very manly, very stylish and very fashionable,” “Their intense gazes drive the fans wild.”

Representatives of JYJ said, “There has never been a mention of Kpop in the large Spanish papers, yet they introduced JYJ, who are foreign artists holding a solo concert in Spain, so we’re really happy.” “During the press conference, the number of interested parties were larger than expected, and this passionate atmosphere was a surprise to us, but also proved to us that coming to the Europe market was the right decision.”

Also, to learn more about the JYJ concerts in Europe, the pre-concert press conference that was held  on the morning of 29 October gathered over 50 media outlets showing their interest in JYJ. Famous television and radio stations as well as press media attended this press conference,  displaying their high level of interest over Asia’s strongest group JYJ, who have already successfully held their concert tours in Japan and America. A special point to note was that Catalunya radio station’s Tatiana Alvarez said, “What really surprised me was that despite being in Spain, a country without much understanding, they managed to sell out their concert tickets really quickly . Coming to this press conference today, I finally understood why the tickets were sold out so quickly. They are really charming, and the concert is definitely worth watching.”

JYJ will be holding another European concert in Berlin on 6 November at 7pm, and like this concert, we hope that it will be antother sell-out show.
