The episode of MBC’s ‘Section TV Entertainment News’ that aired on the 25th followed TVXQ on their Japanese tour.

Max Changmin is currently in talks to play the leading role in the drama ‘For M’. This will be his first drama industry comeback in two years since his role in the 2011 SBS drama ‘Paradise Ranch’.

‘For M’ is a remake of the 2007 movie ‘M’, which starred Kang Dong Won and Lee Yeon Hee. It is a 4-episode fantasy melodrama that depicts the memories of a first love that changes the destiny of a man and a woman. The female lead has not been decided on yet.

Max Changmin is set to play the role of webtoon artist Min Woo in the drama. Though he is a handsome webtoon artist at the peak of his popularity, he is a damaged soul who is sensitive, selfish and suffers from an inferiority complex.

Max Changmin recently joined U-Know Yunho to hold the successful finale of the ‘TVXQ LIVE TOUR 2013 ~TIME~’ at the Nissan Stadium in Yokohama, Japan. The TVXQ effect translated into an airing contract for KBS 2TV’s ‘Our Neighborhood’s Master of Variety and Sports’, which the singer stars in as a regular. ‘For M’ is expected to be the center of attention amongst fans all over the world in places such as China, Hong Kong, the USA and Europe.

Max Changmin will begin filming for the drama in mid-September and the drama is expected to air at the end of the year. It has not been decided yet which channel will pick up the drama.

With contents such as dramas and movies being exported to other countries along with the K-pop craze, variety shows are rapidly rising as the money makers of broadcasting companies.

KBS2′s ‘Our Neighborhood’s Master of Variety and Sports’ recently became a hot topic for selling its first 24 episodes to Japan in only four months since starting the show.

It’s common for the format of popular Korean variety shows and the shows themselves, such as MBC’s ‘I Am a Singer’ SBS’ ‘K-pop Star’ and Mnet’s ‘SuperstarK’ to be exported overseas. However, it usually takes at least a year and a half after the show ends for this to take place. This is because it isn’t easy to overcome the language barrier and make people of other nationalities and cultures laugh.

Even popular shows such as MBC’s ‘We Got Married’ and SBS’ ‘We Like Sunday – Running Man’ were exported only after they scored high viewership ratings in Korea.

Our Neighborhood’s Master’ has only aired 20 episodes but is already set to export its first 24 episodes, which include episodes from September that have not aired yet, to Japan.

Multiple representatives of the broadcasting industry stated, “Ever since the show started airing, ‘Our Neighborhood’s Master’ has been receiving many offers from Japanese broadcasting companies. We have been notified that an exportation contract has been signed at a high price with Digi Kore. We believe such a contract was possible because of TVXQ’s Max Changmin, who is an MC of the show.”

Though many dramas starring Hallyu stars are sold overseas before they air, it is rare for a variety show to be exported before or during the show’s airing. It is extremely rare for a show to be sold overseas as early as ‘Our Neighborhood’s Master’ was.

Regarding the fact that the variety was sold overseas in only four months, many representatives of the entertainment sector stated, “It proves that Hallyu stars have an effect on both dramas and variety shows now.”

A representative of the broadcasting industry stated, “Singers don’t have many places to promote themselves, other than music programs. This is also a reason why many singers have become actors, with the rise in popularity of Korean dramas. We believe that the overseas exportation of variety shows starring K-pop idol stars and Hallyu stars will become more active. We believe that singers and actors will focus more on appearing on variety shows in the future.”

This is a win-win situation for broadcasting companies as well. Exporting variety shows leaves them with a lot of profit because the production costs are far lower than that of a drama. A representative stated, “Most variety shows are produced by the broadcasting companies, and since there are usually a maximum of ten celebrities in one episode, the production costs are on the cheaper side. If they are exported overseas like dramas, it will be a good source of profit for broadcasting companies.”

‘Our Neighborhood’s Master of Variety and Sports’ is becoming the new blue chip of KBS variety shows.

According to Nielsen Korea, the episode of KBS 2TV’s variety show ‘Our Neighborhood’s Master of Variety and Sports’ that aired on the 20th scored a nationwide viewership of 8.4%. This is a 0.9% rise from last week’s episode (7.5%). It is slowly but surely gaining popularity.

This day’s episode followed the badminton match between the celebrity team and the Busan Doogu-dong team.

TVXQ’s Max Changmin and actor Lee Jong Soo were the last pair to play, and it must have been because of the pressure, but they were unable to score a single point till they had to take a time out. The pair lost and the Busan Doogu-dong team clinched an overall victory.

Our Neighborhood’s Master of Variety and Sports’ has been promoting sports activities to its viewers through various missions that had its team playing table tennis, bowling and badminton. One stadium even said that their sales have gone up by 30 million Won because of the show.

Regarding this, PD Lee stated, “We’re grateful for the positive reception. Many sports representatives have been suggesting new sports activities for us to try. So the staff are in a conundrum on what our celebrity team should play next.”

She continued to say, “We have the honor of receiving an appreciation plaque from the Korean Sports For All Association for our team’s work on bowling and table tennis. We recently met with Max Changmin on the set of KBS 2TV’s ‘Our Neighborhood’s Master of Variety and Sports’ and he seemed very energetic as he said, “My personality has gotten much brighter and extroverted.” Though he has been called the ‘Fool’ of the show and shown a completely new side of him that differs from his stage persona, Max Changmin is slowly but surely beginning to learn the joys of variety shows.

“Till not long ago, the first thing I felt was fear when I said, ‘I’m going to be appearing in a variety show’. Personally, I felt really scared and fearful that I was going to be regular on a show, ten years into my debut. Luckily, I was able to adapt to the show more easily because it focuses on sports. Sweat never lies. I believed that as long as the viewers could see my sincerity, and as long as I worked hard, I would succeed eventually.”

Some in the broadcasting industry have chosen Max Changmin as, ‘The MC in his 20s who could succeed Lee Seung Gi’. While filming ‘Moonlight Prince’, Max Changmin drew the attention of many for his calm and well-informed aura. Max Changmin recently got injured during a river-rafting training exercise in the Gangwon Province when a rapid smacked an oar in his face. Though his lips had swelled to a point that made participating in the rest of the program difficult, he buckled down and kept going. His ‘dogged determination’ and ‘professionalism’ was praised by his viewers.

Like this, Max Changmin is doing his best, not only as a member of ‘TVXQ’, but also as an entertainer. Former sumo wrestler Kang Ho Dong, condiment-like Lee Soo Geun and master of sports Jo Dal Hwan have each formed their own characters, and Max Changmin has solidified his status as the sincere ‘maknae’ (youngest in the group).

Max Changmin has a monopoly over the love of his older team members as the youngest member with a faint heart. ‘Our Neighborhood’s Master of Variety and Sports’ has topped the viewership ratings in its time slot yet again.

According to TNmS, the episode of KBS2′s ‘Our Neighborhood’s Master of Variety and Sports’ that aired on the 30th, which featured the celebrity team’s first win, scored a viewership of 6.8%. This is 0.3% higher than last week’s episode, making the show the most watched program in its time slot for the fourth consecutive week.

‘Our Neighborhood’s Master of Variety and Sports’ is said to be popular amongst the middle-aged generation with viewerships coming in at 5.3%, 5.1%, 5.0% and 4.1% for women in their 40s and 50s, and men in their 40s and 50s respectively.

SBS’ ‘Hwashin’ recorded a viewership of 4.4% this week, which is 0.6% lower than last week’s episode

KBS1′s documentary program had a viewership of 6.0% while MBC’s PD Notebook had ratings of 4.2%.
