The Korean Invasion
5 MUST-HEAR GROUPS:
Ready to dip your toe into the Korean Wave? Here are the top five South Korean acts that will help immerse you in the world of K-Pop:
2NE1
Unlike other Korean girl groups who capitalize on sex appeal or being saccharine and cutesy, this group rose to the top of the charts for their anthems on girl power and boy bashing. When they aren’t dominating the charts in Korea and Japan, the group — Dara, Bom, Minzy and leader CL — are making a statement in the fashion world. Often described as “fierce,” this fearless foursome express their style through fashion houses like Alexander McQueen, Gareth Pugh, Proenza Schouler, Balmain and Jeremy Scott, who has become one of the band’s biggest supporters. Catch them repping South Korea as one of the Best Bands of the World nominated by MTV Iggy.

Big Bang
After debuting their signature hip-pop sound in 2006, the five-member team dominated the South Korean charts and later did the same in Japan. First topping the charts with the upbeat single “Lies,” the band has since become one of Asia’s most recognizable acts. And with a collaboration with Major Lazer’s Diplo on one song by members G-Dragon and T.O.P. called “Knockout,” it seems like Asia’s not the only place they’re receiving attention.

Super Junior
How do you get attention from tween girls everywhere? Stick as many good-looking guys as possible on a stage. The 12-member Super Junior has already been deemed one of South Korea’s biggest “hallyu” groups by the BBC and they have a far reach of fans from Slovenia to Peru, where they were named one of the 30 “Sexiest Men in the World.” Their heavy pop tracks and slick dance moves have already made them nationwide sensations with an international presence.

2PM
While other boy bands captured attention through their pretty-boy images, this group capitalizes on their masculine look. Each member sports six-pack abs, regularly revealed onstage to the delight of thousands of screaming fans. The six-member group focuses on heavy acrobatics and intricate dance moves and has become almost Chippendale-like — without the cheesy bow ties.

TVXQ
The Backstreet Boys in their heyday have nothing on this band. After some member drama last year, where three performers decided to leave, the two survivors, Max Changmin and U-Know Yunho, carried on. With tight choreography and impressive pipes, this dynamic duo has become the epitome of K-Pop: slick dance moves, stellar musical productions and big voices to boot.

We all know who performed last year in New York–only our own JYJ — and they performed in Canada, and L.A, and New Jersey, and .. The difference here is that SME isn’t being ignored or prevented from getting the word out. I love HoMin and I am happy over their successes–I just don’t want any illusions out there as to who the trailblazers really are.

It’s true that K-Pop has a different sensibility that is often fun to watch and listen to; but…. it IS often very formulaic. Much of it can be considered a manufactured industry with limited artistic freedom for the performers; and it has a dark underbelly that includes serious exploitation of the artists and payoffs to improve popularity chart rankings. For example, the article mentions “some member drama” with TVXQ when 3 members decided to leave. In fact the 3 members – now a popular trio known as JYJ – sued SM Entertainment. The Korean Courts ruled in JYJ’s favor saying their contract with SM Entertainment was invalid because it amounted to a “Slave Contract”. The only thing left to settle with regard to the lawsuit are the damages owed to JYJ from SM Entertainment. In the meantime the Court ordered SM Entertainment to stop interfering with the activities of JYJ. Despite the ruling SM Entertainment continues to use their influence to prevent JYJ from renting venues for l

(continued from above) Despite the ruling SM Entertainment continues to use their influence to prevent JYJ from renting venues for live performances and appearing on Korean music programs – even the state-owned KBS (Korean Broadcasting System) network still refuses to honor the Court’s decision. SM Entertainment has had similar issues with other popular groups in the past. The Korean courts, Korea Fair Trade Commission, and even members of the Korean Parliament are involved in efforts to break the seeming monopoly that a few K-Pop industry giants have over the popular music sector in South Korea.

wildmuffins is right. sadly, in korean music, the big one, sme, just because bring the best they find and do TONS of promotions, became the most feared one to by radios and tv channels. if these companies don’t do like sme want, they will not receive their idols. KBS did the most of the bad stuffs to YG Ent. and JYJ just because they wanted the exclusivity and the idols of sme. and sme take all the liberty during the first year of their rookies, own ALL songs and do the best to own the groups name. plus to be out of sme is terrible! the person don’t receive much and hav to pay more than 30 times what will receive during all their contract.

not just sme, but others are known for stuffs like that. KARA needed to do something just to have DSP Media making a better deal. and bekah, that decided to graduate from her group After School showed that they asked too much for their idols, making them have a lot of stress. korean idols, sadly, most of the time work. 3 hours sleep is pretty much common there. it without counting that at least in sme, the vacation times was just a week per year. beeing a korean idols is, sadly, hard and very tiring. most of the times too they have to take medicine and such just to perform.

even if sme method is good, sme do it just to appears that they creat the idols, when they already have the talent and the will to become even better. plus, sme isn’t this good in using the idols talent right. snsd have at least 4 wonderful dancers, but rarely they have a song that these 4 can really show their talent. plus sme have a really bad thing about just doing stuffs that are “trending” inspide of doing what the group like more, as 2NE1 and BigBang do. sme have a very bad tendency of bringing the best groups and ending them. H.O.T, Shinhwa,TVXQ…. sme just can’t keep the best together, and they always complain about sme because the exactly same thing. however, sme always put their rights as being selfish and traitors, not humans.

T/N: due to the poor quality of the audio and the surrounding noise, there are words they said that I couldn’t catch.
[Trans] 111016 JYJ’s Message During the 2nd Day of the Concert (Watch On YouTube)
YC: We had a concert yesterday, and we have one today too. There are words that the 3 of us want to tell you. We were having a talk amongst ourselves, saying that there are so many people who are waiting for us, yet is it difficult to have our activities in Japan… Isn’t it hard on you guys to wait for us like this?
Fans: It’s alright!!!
YC: Even if you say it’s alright, I know that it would a bit hard for you guys… I want to come back soon, I want to have activities in Japan soon…
Fans: We’ll be waiting for you!!!
YC: I… I really love Japan, I love Japan very dearly~ I love Japan so much that my mom even asked me, “How about a Japanese wife?” (Fans screamed) I really love you guys. Thank you very much!!!
JJ: Time like this is when it is the heaviest and the hardest on you guys, I wanted it to be a good time for you guys though… Well, because, things like this, as adults, we can’t say things like this from our own mouths, because they are very embarrassing. Uhm, even though the 3 of us are like little kids, we have our own pride as artists and musicians. We’re holding on the that pride on front of you guys, but because of the thought that we can’t have activities in Japan, that we can’t do anything about it, it makes us feel very lonely. It’s like a kid in front of an adult, how should I put this? I’ve put a lot of thoughts on how to say this in front of you guys, and I told myself to become honest in front of you.
Fans *clap *
JJ: It’s not something embarrassing anyway. From the time we had our debut in Japan, the time that we were singing in front of less than 100 audiences to this day when we are singing in front of all of you, you have always been looking over for us since the time we were young. Yesterday, I said something on Twitter…
Fans *scream *
JJ: After I tweeted that, a fan tweeted me back saying, “It’s alright, don’t worry~”, and I think that everyone here would also share the same thoughts as that fan. From now on, we won’t be worried anymore. The 3 of us, no matter whether we’re in Japan or somewhere else, won’t be worried anymore. We will keep holding on to these genuine feelings and do our best to sing and show you again. If we can do that, then even if it’s 10 years or 20 years later, we won’t be worried and will keep going. Please take care of us from now on.
Fans *clap *
JJ: Well then, it has come to the time for our last song
Fans: Eh~~~
JJ: That’s right, it went by quick didn’t it? We ourselves also think that 2 hours are way too short, but because the 3 of us don’t have enough songs *laughs * Well, haha, even if we can’t make it long this time, we will do our best to bring you another great concert here in Japan next time. Well then, I’d like to go to our last song of the day, “In Heaven”.

☆I went to the concert by chance☆
Because of work, I thought I wouldn’t be able to go but by chance, I unexpectedly was able to go yesterday.
Things like that can happen!? I was so shocked that my expression was of a pigeon who was shot by a peashooter.
Because it was too sudden, I could only go alone.
When I arrived at Katsuta Station, I wanted to cry out of excitement but I was all by myself.
When I was trying the suppress my emotions,
a lot of kind people came to me and we shared the same excitements.
There are a lot of nice people. Thank you very much.
To be able to see the 3 of them singing and dancing was like a dream to me, I was so happy.
When I was watching them, my hands unconsciously became hands of a cutesy young girl.
This morning, I unbelievably woke up at 3:30am.
Well everyone, let’s wake up from our dreams and go back to the real world.
Just kidding, I still don’t want to go back to the reality~. (in Yoochun’s style)

[News] 111017 JYJ Draws 80,000 Fans to ‘JYJ UNFORGETTABLE LIVE CONCERT IN JAPAN 2011′
JYJ‘s latest solo concert has confirmed their fame in Japan, as they managed to attract more than 80,000 fans over two days!
Concert tickets for ‘JYJ UNFORGETTABLE LIVE CONCERT IN JAPAN 2011‘ sold out as soon as tickets became available, and the server crashed due to a massive influx of visitors. Every seat for the solo concert was sold out, and even standing room sections at the venue was practically brimming over with excited fans.
On October 3rd, thousands of fans flocked to the park to see JYJ perform from cities like Osaka, Sapporo, Tokyo, and more. It’s being reported that all parts of the country got hit with heavy traffic due to the amount of fans driving to the concert. An associate of the concert commented, “We were already surprised because the tickets were sold out, but we were surprised again by JYJ’s fame when the standing sections (which could hold a capacity of thousands) became full.”
JYJ had put on a spectacular show, performing songs from their first Korean album, ‘In Heaven‘, as well other hit songs from their worldwide album, ‘The Beginning‘.
They also had the crowd going wild when they performed OST songs from dramas that JYJ were affiliated with, such as “I Found You” from ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal‘, “Protect You” from ‘Protect the Boss‘, and “You Are So Beautiful” from ‘Scent of a Woman‘.
One 40-year-old fan commented, “I really like JYJ. I’m a housewife so on the day of the ticket site opening, I waited in front of the computer from morning to night, waiting for the site to reboot. I applied through the ticket lottery for front seats; luckily, I was given a good seat. The JYJ members are good-looking and they have a great harmony. They are also funny, which makes them even more popular.”
Another fan, aged 45, admitted, “My daughter and wife love JYJ so inevitably, I ended up liking their music as well. The whole family left the house at 3:00 AM to watch their concert, but we couldn’t get to the front of the standing section. I’m so excited, regardless, because I got to see JYJ’s performance.“.
Touched by the overwhelming show of support, the members expressed, “We are so blessed to see our fans in Japan. We had mixed reviews when it was revealed that our concert would be at a spot that got affected by the earthquake, but we didn’t want to miss the chance of seeing our fans in Japan. On this day, we felt everyone’s love for us and because of that, it gave us courage.”
When the members finished giving their message to their fans, the fans reacted with their tears and started to chant, “It’s okay, JYJ!” JYJ finished the concert with their song, “In Heaven“.

How about the back?
There are people all the way in the back who can’t even see us. Can you guys also scream?
We also know there were many people who couldn’t come to the venue. It’s too bad, but we will gratefully accept your thoughts from here.
Ok… so first, it is ok if we come down?
JJ: When we sang the ballad just a while ago, you guys did a surprise pen light event. (T/NI think they changed from red to yellow for Fallen Leaves) Thank you so much!
JS + YC: Thank you!
JJ: I know previously there was such an event at the Korean concert and the Kokugikan and we were touched by it, but honestly, we did not expect this here, so we were touched again.
Ok, so now, we’d like to go to the main stage…
Everyone complains.
JJ: But it’s better for the people in the back if we go to the main stage….
Ok, well, last time when we were at the Kokugikan, it was more like an event, but this time at Ibaragi, we are able to hold our own JYJ concert, which we’re really happy about. And I’m sure each of us would like to share our thoughts… so, in order to do this, let’s go to the main stage!
YC says something as they go up the stage but can’t hear.
JJ: Ok from here…oh! You guys all became quiet!
Ok, so from here, it is time for us to share each of our honest thoughts about holding this JYJ concert. Let’s start with JS?
JS: Can’t I be the one to decide who talks?
This is hardest part to say in Japanese…
As you may know, there were so many times we wished to be on stage or do an event in Japan, but, as you know, there were some difficulties and we couldn’t do it. Because of that, every time, we felt really sorry to you guys. I’m really joyful and happy that we are finally able to be on this stage and see you guys. Seeing you guys, we get the strength to continue forward. This is the only thing I can really say: Thank you so much.
YC: Am I next?
Really, thank you very much.
Umm…was it yesterday…no, today. We had rehearsal until early this morning. And the three of us talked about how we want to release singles and albums in Japan. It doesn’t have to be included in the Oricon charts. We just want to be able to do activities in Japan, to be able to sing Japanese songs on stage with you. It’s a bit nostalgic. Just like JS said, we feel sorry that we can’t do it. But you know, while we were backstage, we heard your reactions/cheers and we thought, ‘Oh wow. JYJ isn’t dead yet.’ (T/N Sorry, such a literal transition…you guys get the idea though, right? Kind of like “we can still make it.”) And that’s because of you guys. Thank you so much!!!
JJ: Umm…so as you can see, they are sharing from their hearts and I don’t know if there’s much I can add to what they said, but…you know, we always say “thank you,” “we’re sorry,” “we are able to come this far because of you guys” but it’s because you always warmly cheer us on with the same heart, unchanging from our debut days – even in these uncertain times. That’s why we say “thank you,” “we’re sorry,” and “we are able to come this far because of you guys.” We feel a bit envious of all the new artists (Korean) coming to Japan. Those artists come to Japan with hope [to succeed] and are challenging themselves in a new world. Even with just you guys here, we are filled with emotions/with hope (Not sure about this part). We are very thankful. But in our current condition, we don’t know what’s going to happen with our activities in Japan. We worry about what will happen when your support is gone? So we are envious of the Korean artists that are debuting now. But even from now on, though we are a little bit older than those new artists, we can return to the feeling of when we were new artists. We’ll do our best by bringing new songs and continuing to show our unchanging form. Please believe in us.
Well, I think, even though we couldn’t share all, we were at least able to share part of what we are feeling.
Unfortunately, the next song will be the last song…
As Tohoshinki, we have sung over 100 songs. We would like to sing these songs, but unfortunately, we can’t (probably alluding to the legal issues). There are songs also that you don’t know about, but well… I think you guys understand our feelings.
Yesterday, the three of us briefly sang this song during rehearsal, so I was thinking…is it ok if we sing it?
(Obviously, the other two were not expecting it.)
This is totally ad-lib. We didn’t plan this.
Sings a phrase of SBU.
JJ: That’s it.
YC: I often listen to our Tohoshinki songs with my ipod while we are on the move.
JJ: We had very good songs, huh? Well, I don’t know if we’ll be able to make better songs than those, but we’d like to continue creating songs that will touch your heart.
So, now, please listen to our last song… In Heaven.
