[TRANS] 111216 New Drama “Miss Ripley” Hits Japan! Exclusive Interview With Actor Park Yoochun
The drama DVD will be released in Japan in February 2012. Park Yoochun, who has been receiving a great amount of praise as an actor, shared his memories about his shooting process with us at The Banyan Tree Club & Spa Seoul, the hotel where the outdoor shoots for “Miss Ripley” was done.
Acting while thinking about “The situation of a first love”
“The Song Yoohyun which I portray is innocent and doesn’t know anything about love, a person who mulls over his problems and doesn’t talk about it.” This is what Yoochun says about his role in “Miss Ripley.” As he explained, Yoohyun was born to a Japanese mother and Korean father, and his mother passed away when he was 9 years old. Following that, he studied at the University of Tokyo, and has the Japanese name Yutaka, as well as Korean name Yoohyun. His father remarried, and hoped that his son would take over the business. If this was a typical drama, the main character would be rebel against his father and refuse to take over the business. However, Song Yoohyun is a straightforward man who grew up in a proper manner, and it was probably because of this that he bumps into the beautiful Jang Miri at a student hostel in Seoul, and falls in love with her at first sight. His expression at that moment in time is probably a true expression of Yoohyun’s innocence, leaving a deep impression.
“The director said that to Song Yoohyun, Jang Miri is his first love, so he wanted me to express the emotion of being in love for the first time. However, when I was acting I was not thinking about my first love, instead immersing myself in the character of Yoohyun then expressing the emotion.” Compared to the innocent Song Yoohyun, female lead Jang Miri, despite living in a student hostel herself, felt that “men who are living in a student hostel must be poor,” so prior to knowing that he is a chaebol, always treated Yoohyun in a cold manner. To escape her bitter past, she lies that she is a graduate of the University of Tokyo, and starts working in a hotel. She dates both Kim Seung Woo’s character Jang Myung Hoon, and Song Yoohyun at the same time. Although she is the female lead, her role has a strong image of an “evil woman.”
“If it were me, I definitely wouldn’t be cheated by a person like Miri. As long as there is something slightly strange about his/her actions or words, I will be able to tell that it is a lie. Ah no, there are times which I can’t tell as well (laughs). If you were to ask if I was someone who would be easily cheated or not, do I look like the type who will be easily fooled? I feel that I haven’t really been cheated before, and can detect a lie at a glance. When chatting with staff, I can tell immediately if they are lying. If it’s being fooled by a girlfriend? Hmm… then maybe I won’t be able to tell (laughs). I think my mom would say “You’re still not there yet.”
Saying with an innocent face that he cannot be fooled, then saying that he might be fooled, Park Yoochun’s air of purity seems to fit well with the character of Song Yoohyun.
In the drama, Song Yoohyun falls in love with Jang Miri and expresses this directly. But considering it carefully, Song Yoohyun does not understand how Miri grew up, and her character. Furthermore, Miri showed no interest to him at first, treating him in a cold manner, pushing him away, and despite being treated this way, he fearlessly expresses his feelings for her. Even though Miri’s friend, Moon Hui Joo (played by Kang Hye Jung) expresses her interest in Yoohyun, he doesn’t waver at all.
“I think that anyone could fall in love at first sight. But whether that will lead to love, I don’t know. Personally, I hope that love can last for a long time, and develop slowly. Of course, if I meet someone I like, I will work hard to show her my charm. Song Yoohyun is a optimistic person, and we are similar in that aspect. But in terms of having a special method of “if you do this, you can definitely get the girl,” I don’t have that (laughs).
“To touch a person’s heart is really difficult. If you ask me what you should do to move someone, I don’t have an answer to that too.”
In that case, have you considered how you would need to touch someone as an actor?
“That is not something that I have really thought about. But that is to say, isn’t the fact that I haven’t really thought about it, the reason that touches the hearts of the viewers? To do things with the aim of touching other people’s hearts, I think that as an actor, things are a little different. The character of Song Yoohyun is like that as well, a person without such motives. When I was reading the script, what first attracted me to the role of Song Yoohyun was his completely straightforward personality. I am like that myself, and after my debut I was faced with all kinds of situations and I would always give it my all. Therefore, I felt that Yoohyun and I are very similar, and was attracted to him. Compared to the plot of the drama, it is more important to accept the role of Yoohyun.
It is not simple, obvious changes, but the expression of subtle changes that is very difficult.
Initially believing in Miri completely without any suspicion, Song Yoohyun finds out the truth about Miri in the second half of the drama, and causes Yoohyun’s world to shake. The suspense of this part of the show is thrilling. “Although Song Yoohyun’s character and mindset hasn’t changed, but a part of him has become cold. If Yoohyun had, after finding out about Miri’s lies, changed his feelings and attitudes completes, it would have been easier to express. However, to show no change in his basic emotions, and showing subtle differences instead is very difficult.”
Park Yoochun manages to express these complex yet subtle emotions well through his acting. In terms of acting, what are the points that he looks out for?
“Instead of just the physical appearance, and things that can be seen with your eyes, I focused on how to express the lines in my own way. For me, I am one of those “holds on to the script till the last minute, studying the script” types, but for this role, I placed more focus on how to blend Song Yoohyun’s character into my own.” During the filming period, there would also be times in his daily life where he would accidentally show glimpses of Song Yoohyun instead. “Song Yoohyun is always well-dressed, elegant and well-mannered. So during the shooting, I naturally maintained good poise, and even the way I held my glass while drinking champagne was better than usual (laughs.) In ways like these, Song Yoohyun’s actions became part of my daily life.
Shooting at The Banyan Tree was difficult, but created many memories
Another point to look out for in this drama is Yoohyun’s crying scene.
“When reading the script, there were scenes where Yoohyun would cry. If it were me, I would not cry (at these scenes.) On the other hand, there were situations where Yoohyun would not cry, but I would feel like crying at. This made the actual shooting difficult. When I was reading the script, I felt like crying, yet I had to express a different emotion during the actual shoot. This is why acting is interesting, isn’t it.”
Even though the plot of the drama progresses in a thrilling way, there were many meaningful episodes that occurred during filming.
“Song Yoohyun works in a hotel, so we spent a lot of time in this hotel where we are at now, The Banyan Tree. In the corridors of this hotel, we shot the scene where (Yoohyun) first met Kang Hye Jung’s character Moon Hui Joo, and that was a really difficult scene. This was the scene where Moon Hui Joo, who works in housekeeping spills cleaning detergent on Yoohyun. However, for this portion, the “detergent-spilling” scene was shot separately, and it wasn’t Kang Hye Jung, but the director of photography that poured the detergent on me. The director of photography had said with enthusiasm “This is what I’m good at,” (laughs) But the detergent got into my eyes, and it hurt a lot. Furthermore, the corridor we filmed at was really narrow and crowded with staff and actors, over 30 people, so it was really warm and unbearable, and just thinking about it is difficult.
My image in the first and last episodes are different, I hope that you can feel my progress.
For you, this main role in a drama is your second project after “SungKyunKwan Scandal.” Compared to the past, how do you think your mentality has changed?
As “SungKyunKwan Scandal” was my first time shooting a drama, I think the viewers were more accepting, or should I say that due to it being my first time acting so they were more kind and protective of me. However, with my second project, this is different. Although they are fans, the number of people who have a more critical eye on me has increased as well. This means that I feel more pressure. But because I really did work very hard on this drama, so if I were to be praised, I would be very happy.
Speaking truthfully, what is the charm of “Miss Ripley?”
I cut my hair at around episode 11. Actually, I was supposed to cut my hair once I started working at the hotel, but the timing wasn’t right. Actually, I think that I was a little fat when I had cut my hair short previously, and that was probably why my short hair was a failure. This is why I wanted to challenge (short hair) again, wanting to try it out in the drama. I think it suits me better now, what do you think? (Laughs) Seriously speaking, as this is my second project, I was acting with a portion of my mind thinking that my acting skills were still very weak. But acting with this constant need to work harder in mind, I’m thinking, “Comparing the first episode to the last, wasn’t I very different?” I want to show my progress to everyone, and this is what I wish to bring to my fans.

Tohoshinki is an immensely popular group from Korea, formed by Yunho and Changmin, which has taken Asia by storm. Unlike (using) what is known as K-pop, they carried out activities steadfastly in Japan as a member of the J-pop community. They will be appearing for the 3rd time, in the 2011 year-end Kohaku Uta Gassen. We asked the two about the secrets of their successes in a foreign country with a different language.
Changmin: I can only speak from our own experiences, but I think it’s very important to always have the passion of “I’m representing my own country, let’s work hard even if its a foreign land,” determination and a professional attitude. I think this would apply to businessmen as well. Although it’s quite embarrassing to express this in words, we’ve always been very conscious of the image we portray, and set high expectations for ourselves and to work hard towards our own standards of what ‘charismatic’ is. To me, “Compared to words, expressing oneself through actions is more charismatic,”so I feel that there is a need to work towards (creating) a better stage, towards a higher goal…
Yunho: But once we’re off the stage, we are very ordinary guys. There are times when we space out, and aren’t that charismatic. It’s precisely because we can regulate our moods and pressures suitably, that we are able to maintain our intensity and focus on stage. Perhaps it’s precisely because we are just a little unreliable in private, that allows us to do our jobs successfully. The real Changmin is occasionally such a romantic that I feel touched by him.
Changmin: Yunho is a pure, mischievous child (laughs). Normally, he does not have any of the wildness that he portrays on stage, and has many childish sides (to him). But as children, we watched Korean drama serials that had ideologies such as “Men must treat women in a gentle way” and “Ladies’ first is a given.” Korean women have similar expectations towards the men. So after they start dating, they would have to celebrate the 100th day anniversaries, and prepare for a lot of events that are not celebrated in Japan. Korean guys, including us, all have an ‘ideal guy’ in our hearts that is different from how we are in our actual lives.
Yunho: Compared to Japan, I think that Korea has much higher expectations towards men. So when we first came to Japan, I was puzzled as to why there were so many reserved females in Japan. But recently, after seeing the females among the staff, there have also been instances that have changed my perspective. (Now) I think, “Ah, no matter what country it is, it’s all the same, there are all types of people.”
Changmin: Saying such things will get you into trouble with the female staff…
Yunho: I was joking! But regardless if it’s the fans or the females around me, as long as you have expectations of me, I want to do my best to fulfill them. Although I can’t say that all Korean men are like this, this is the way we do things.
Changmin: Before we made our debut in Japan, because we were very insecure about whether we would be accepted by the Japanese audience, so we first worked hard at studying the Japanese language and culture. In order to gain recognition in a country with a different culture, you need to first understand that country. I guess this is the same in the business world. So I think the Tohoshinki now is a group that has the colours of Japanese culture which we worked so hard to learn, added on to the unique Korean characteristics that we originally had.
Yunho: I think the fans not only appreciate our performances, but are able to acutely sense the hard work that we have put in. Although this hard work isn’t tangible, but I feel it has definitely been conveyed to everyone.
Changmin: Even if I do not feel well, even if I get injured, I do not want to compromise.
Yunho: In order to be loved by people, there is no other way but to work hard with everything you have. In order to face work in a natural manner, I think this is necessary.
Wisdom in books! 50 key words of success
Tohoshinki’s key word: ‘Growth’
It’s been a year since we’ve restarted activities. For us, next year will be a busier and more exciting year.
Next year, we will showcase even more mature sides of ourselves, and it would be good if we could bring energy to the Japan that has always supported us.
(We) want to fill the hearts of everyone in Japan with excitement and anticipation.
We ourselves are also looking forward to the “Tohoshinki of 2012″ that never stops growing. It’s a very unbelievable feeling.

After going through contractual issues and switching from a 5-man group to a 2 man group, the TVXQ appeared in Shanghai for their fan meeting for the first time with their new grouping. On the afternoon of 9 December, Yunho and Changmin did an interview with ent.163.com. When talking about the recording of their Japanese album, Changmin laughed and said that there was a portion of the recording that required whistling, which he insisted on Yunho doing despite Yunho not being able to do it very well. When talking about their private lives which fans are very concerned about, Yunho and Changmin expressed, “In private, when we don’t have too many activities, we listen to music, watch movies and meet up with friends, very much like a normal person. “
Q: What is the difference between performing in Europe/America and Asia?
TVXQ: It’s the same in both Asia as well as Europe/America, no matter where we are, we can feel the passion and love from the fans, which is surprising to us.
Q: When recording the Japanese album “TONE,” were there any interesting episodes?
TVXQ: In our new album, there is a song called “Easy Mind,” and this song includes a portion where Yunho is whistling. Actually, he isn’t very good at whistling, but we insisted on him doing the whistling. This is one of the more meaningful moments that we remember.
Q: The style of this new album is more mature, and has more variety?
TVXQ: As this is a new album that we released after a long time, so there were many people that were very concerned about the album. We are thankful for everybody’s care and concern, and thank them for their support.
Q: Changmin, will you consider composing songs (T/N : vs writing lyrics) in the future?
TVXQ (Changmin) : So far, I haven’t really thought about writing songs, and maybe I just don’t have the talent for composing, so I feel more inclined towards developing in the area of lyric-writing.
Q: Yunho, do you have plans to compose or write lyrics?
TVXQ (Yunho) : Previously, during TVXQ concerts pr SMTown concerts, I’ve performed songs that I composed and wrote myself, so if there is chance and a good song, I hope that I will be able to include it in an album.
Q: What do the Chinese fans mean to you?
TVXQ: Although there isn’t much of a difference between fans in various countries, but they feel something special towards the Chinese fans, and the Chinese fans are always the first to ask after us whenever something happens, so we hope that in the future, fans can continue to show us their love and support.
Q: How are you like in private?
TVXQ: When we don’t have much to do, we listen to music, watch movies, and meet up with friends, very much like a normal person.

The two members shared their first impressions of Singapore, their love for chilli crabs and what they miss doing the most.
They may be one of the biggest stars in K-pop, but what greeted us at the group interview in the function room at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, were two affable and sincere men.
Decked in matching blue military-styled uniforms, TVXQ took questions from the media in a short 20-minute group interview before their fan party.
The duo first talked about their first impressions of our country and told us what they had previously heard of us.
“It’s our first time to Singapore and we had the chance to view the night scenery yesterday. It was really beautiful. The impression is not fully formed because we’ve not performed and met our fans yet. We’ll have a better impression of Singapore and the fans after tonight,” leader Yunho replied.
He added that Singaporean fans had been very welcoming and gave them lots of support.
It’s not difficult to see that the chilli crabs in Singapore had left TVXQ a lasting impression (the duo mentioned it again during the fan party).
When asked if they had the chance to taste any local delicacy, Changmin said, “We’ve tried pepper crabs and chilli crabs last night. We heard that it’s one of the most famous local delicacies here. It was really, really tasty. We know that Singapore is well-known for the seafood, since it’s surrounded by the sea.”
Being one of the top Hallyu stars definitely has its perks, but it has its downsides — the loss of privacy and being “ordinary”, as well as stress.
Changmin shared that the things he missed were travelling with his friends, and hanging out with them and having drinks together. The 23-year-old also reminded that he is already of age to have alcoholic beverages.
Yunho echoed the former’s sentiments, answering a short “same” first in Korean, then in English.
When questioned how they relieve stress, Changmin first answered that he would drink and have tasty food, especially spicy dishes.
On the other hand, Yunho demonstrated his athletic side, saying that he would go for snowballing during winter and in the other seasons, bowling.
Later, the enthusiasm TVXQ showed was evident, when the duo talked about their fans.
While no particular fan ever caught their attention, Yunho spoke on a special and memorable moment they had.
“When we’re performing, our fans would create ‘TVXQ’ or the members’ names with red light sticks. That’s very memorable for us,” he said.
Considering they are already one of the top stars in the Korean music industry, the media wondered what it would be like for them 10 years down the road.
“We’ll probably still be in this industry, doing what we’re doing now. We wish that we could put up such performances by then, but stamina wise, I’m not very sure if we still have the strength,” Changmin replied.
Yunho also pictured themselves doing joint performances with junior singers in the industry, and would probably be involved in individual careers such as acting in various dramas.
However, the pair has no acting projects at the moment.
It was a short interview, but TVXQ displayed their professionalism, candor and sincerity the entire time. The bright-eyed pair spoke in soft and gentle tones, only to raise their voices occasionally to show enthusiasm.
TVXQ may have debuted eight years ago, but the duo felt down-to-earth and that fame did not seem like it had gone over their heads.

[Trans] 111206 They Are Indeed Brothers, Even The Passion For Acting Is Similar
“My acting is better than hyung, right? (laughs)” (Park Yoohwan)
“Yoohwan’s acting is more natural than me. But his portrayal for emotional scenes are still far on par to mine. Haha!” (Park Yoochun)
New actor Park Yoohwan debuted just 9 months ago with “Shiny Shining Shining”, is currently acting in drama “A Thousand Days’ Promise” as the younger brother of the female lead who is suffering from senile dementia. Park Yoohwan is the younger brother of JYJ member Park Yoochun and Park Yoochun previously acted in “Sungkyunkwan Scandal”. On the afternoon of 29th last month, the reporter interviewed Park Yoohwan at SBS drama centre in Gyeonggi-do and through a phone interview with Park Yoochun who was in Hawaii for a photo shoot.
The actor brothers with many similarities Park Yoochun and Park Yoohwan. Younger brother Yoohwan: “We have been busy recently and didn’t have the time to meet.”, and expressed his wish to act in the same project with his brother.
Yoohwan said, “Hyung is like a father to me”, and Yoochun said, “My brother is worth to be praised, I’m proud of him.” There is a reason for such a deep relationship between the brothers. They migrated to America in 1998 but the brothers suffered after facing financial difficulties and their parents’ divorce. Especially when Yoochun returned to Korea for his singer dream, the younger brother Yoohwan who has always been dependent on his hyung, starts to feel the uneasiness.
Yoohwan said, “I couldn’t understand why I had to go through all these issues. And bore grudges towards my hyung who left me. There was nothing I wanted to do and had no confidence to do anything. As I starts to have the thinking of ‘what’s the use of studies?’, I withdrew from school. I was a high schooler then.”
However there was a dramatic change to Yoohwan. One day, Yoohwan followed his hyung to acting classes in preparation for “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” and end up falling for it. Yoohwan said, “I found myself through acting. For the first time in life, I had my own dream.” Yoochun said, “Acting transformed Yoohwan from someone leading a dull life with no desire into a very lively person. I used to get rejections from him when I ask him to join me for drinks but now he would initiate to ask me out for a drink.” Yoohwan’s portrayal in “A Thousand Days’ Promise” gained compliments where he was grabbing his older sister who was rejecting treatments while crying out loud and when he endured the sadness and teared while taking care of his sister. Yoohwan then revealed the source for this extraordinary emotional scene, “It was the painful memory when I was young. When hyung came back to America for a temporary visit, I looked at hyung who was sound asleep and upon thinking that we are going to be separated again, I felt so sad and tears just fell uncontrollably. Upon thinking of that situation, I can still feel the sadness somewhere deep within me.” He continued, “The love for noona in the drama is very similar to the love for hyung. During the emotion scenes, I imagined if hyung is the one suffering from senile dementia.”
When reading the scripts, Yoohwan would ask scriptwriter Kim Soo Hyun for advices on acting and take notes of it. In order to perfect his enunciation, he would read out loud for 30 minutes daily. Older brother adored and worried for such a younger brother. Yoochun said, “He would stay up through the night to research on the character. I would advice him frequently that currently it is still the beginning phase, must have confidence (with yourself) and don’t work over painstakingly. But he still overworked himself. Luckily he worked hard in training his body and took good care of his own health.”
Yoohwan recently has been reading actor Michael Caine’s “Acting in Film: An Actor’s Take on Movie Making”. He said, “A quote from the book that left me an impression is, ‘If you have any other plans besides performing, then give up performing right now.’ I don’t know anything else other than performing, thus I won’t give this up.” (T/N: In this case, ‘performing’ refers to acting; a form of performing arts.) Yoochun said, “When I started my activities (as a singer) then, I was bearing the responsibility for my family’s livelihood but I hoped that Yoohwan can break away from the duty of money earning and perform freely (as an enjoyment).”

On 25 November at 4.30pm, TVXQ attended the “2011 Bilboard K-Pop Masters” press conference held at the meeting room of MGM Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada. They said “We are very happy to have a chance to help educate people about K-pop in a famous city such as Las Vegas. As compared to the fact that this is held specifically in America, we are happy to be able to spread our culture to more people. As a representative for all of our country, we will work hard, and we hope that everyone can give us more love and care.”
Answering an American journalists question of “Did you know that you are in fact very popular in America?” U-Know Yunho said, “ We were a little embarrassed when we heard about that. It makes me want to show even more of the Korean culture to everybody. We will express our gratitude via today’s show.”
On this concert, TVXQ said, “Every group’s performance has reached a flawless level. The last performance will be “Arirang” (a Korean folk song). We specially prepared this to enjoy it with the audience. It would be great if everyone could use their cheers to express their happiness towards this show. We want to spend a meaningful day with everybody.”
As for “The American musician you would like to work with,” they replied “We live by listening to music from a variety of singers, and if we had to pick just one, it would be difficult. If there is a good opportunity, we would want to work with them, We hope that we can work together to produce an even better album.”
Responding to the K-pop fever, this press conference saw many famous local media such as FOX channel, MTV and The Huffington Post.
After the press conference, TVXQ had an outdoor red carpet event, and appeared in suits. With this world tour that went to places such as America, France, Japan, China and others, they have left a deep impression, courageously meeting up to the large cheers. Any movement made by TVXQ is capable of igniting passion from the audiences.
Bonnie Wong (22) who watched their performance in LA, when evaluating K-pop artists, said “I feel that their vocal and dancing abilities are exceptional as they move towards a global stage, and it is amazing. Their performances are full of charm, and that attracts me even more.” Stacy Kay Gully, who was present in Las Vegas, praised K-pop, saying “I don’t have an accurate understanding of the lyrics, but I can still feel the passion and depth of their music. Korean music touches my heart first, and not my ears.”
With the soaring K-pop fever reaching Las Vegas, the “2011 Billboard K-Pop Masters” is a large-scale music festival organized by Billboard Korea and MGM. This is an activity to celebrate the opening of the Billboard K-Pop chart on 26 August. Artists include TVXQ, SHINee, Brown Eyed Girls, Beast, MBLAQ, G.NA, 4minute, Sistar and other artists. It starts at 8pm on 25 November, and will run for 2.5 hours. It will be held again the next day, on 26 November.

A popular drama aired on Korea’s SBS, the complete DVD Box for drama “Paradise Ranch” starring Changmin (Tohoshinki) was released on 2 November.
With this, Changmin, who is acting as the lead in a drama for the first time, talks about his feelings when acting in this show, his favourite scenes, his ideal type of girl and newlywed-couple life in relation to the drama, his approach towards girls as well as the episode where Yunho visits him on set, in this official interview which has finally arrived.
◆ ◆ ◆
This is your first starring role in a drama, please tell us how you feel about your acting.
As drama is my first project, before the shooting I was already nervous. This is a kind of work I have never ever done before, so it was difficult. But when the shooting started, I got used to it after a while, and I could have fun with it. The location for the filming was really nice, so that was great too. As for the show, as this was my first challenge so I can’t say that I was confident but compared to my initial acting, thinking “If I did it this way, wouldn’t it better?” was how I decided to look at this.
How did you take on the role of Dong Joo?
I watched similar dramas, and observed characters that were similar to Dong Joo. I studied Korean dramas with contents about arguing with your partner and unknowingly coming to like the other person, such as “Fantasy Couple” and “Alone in Love.” I also searched for similarities between myself and Dong Joo, and tried to express that.
What are the similarities between yourself and Dong Joo?
Being straightforward in expressing our feelings, and being short-tempered, probably (Laughs). Dong Joo’s emotions fluctuate a lot, and I’m that type as well, and since we’re similar in that way, it was easier to act it out and that was good. Of course, I can’t say that Dong Joo and I are totally the same, but I don’t there was anything that was completely different about the both of us.
Please tell us if there were any scenes that were your favourite, or any lines that left a deep impression on you.
The scene were Dong Joo was changing clothes in Da Ji’s house. Da Ji came into Dong Joo’s room, and said “My father is coming so you have to hide!” This hiding scene. It was an interesting scene to act in. Even though I was half-naked (Laughs), it was a really comical scene so I really enjoyed it.
What was difficult (about shooting the drama)?
The shooting started in winter so it was really cold. In terms of scenes, it was the scene where I was calling my mother while drinking. I’ve never acted drunk before, but I was actually drinking wine as we did the shoot. I was drinking all the way since the morning, and I ended up drunk and that was really difficult. (laughs). However, it was a good experience.
Dong Joo and Yeon Hee had a very tumultuous newlywed-couple life, but please tell us about your ideal girl and newlywed-couple life.
I think that as Dong Joo and Yeon Hee are first loves, and they couldn’t do anything, and couldn’t do without each other, a mutually-dependent existence. They are young so they are optimistic and passionate, but I don’t think you need to keep being that way. For me, although it is important to treat your partner kindly and consider their feelings, having a friend-like relationship is good. Although we will argue, be it going out and having fun, or interests and other things should be shared as well. As for my ideal girl, a reliable girl would be good. This job (of mine) is full of instability, so I think that having a girl who can help me remain composed would be great. Someone feminine and cheerful would be nice.
Dong Joo wavers between Yeon Hee and Jin Young, but for you (Changmin) who would you pick between the two of them?
To be honest, I want to add the both of them together then split it into half (laughs). Basically, I don’t want to give up either of them. Jin Young is a woman that any man would yearn for. She’s a good career woman, and initially it wasn’t the case by in the end, she helps to protect Dong Joo. This kind of woman is probably the dream of any man. For Da Ji, compared to Jin Young, she has more energy and is not as feminine but more…like an auntie? (Laughs) However, for me, that is her charm, and I feel that she is very reliable. Even though they aren’t sure of their mutual feelings, aren’t they still dependent on each other?
Dong Joo is a character that doesn’t express his true feelings for Da Ji, saying nasty things to her all the time, but for Changmin, what is your approach towards a girl that you like?
I won’t do it like Dong Joo, who says nasty things and bullies his partner even though he likes her. I won’t fool around, and I won’t try to analyze her thoughts. Rather, I think my approach would be instinctive, and just being myself. From a girl’s point of view, I think I would be easy to get along with. (Laughs)
During filming, it seems that Yunho went to the shooting location in Jeju island to visit you, so please tell us about any episodes during that time. Also, did you get any advice from Yunho, or any feedback with regards to the drama?
I said “Don’t come, don’t come,” but he stubbornly came anyway…. What Yunho had told be before filming was, to do it naturally and not be nervous, and he said a lot of things. As for watching this drama…we didn’t give any actual feedback to each other regarding each of our dramas, but he said “It was interesting, and good.”
So you and Yunho be performing together as actors in the future?
No. (Laughs) I do feel that I want to show everyone “Changmin” as an actor, but when it’s the two of us, we become Tohoshinki, don’t we.. I only just started acting, so I can’t say that I want to see this, but from now on I will work even harder to improve my acting, and show everyone various sides of me.
This was your first challenge in acting, and what is the difference between acting and singing activities? Also, do you see any changes in yourself, or any improvements etc in your activities as a singer?
Putting your feelings into it and expressing yourself is the same. However, in a song, you express one feeling for about 3 to 6 minutes, whereas in acting you have to naturally express all the little changes in emotions that you see in everyday life. It’s different from singing, and it was difficult. After actually trying it out, I think my range of expressions has increased, and this was really useful.
This drama is a love comedy, what kind of genre do you wish to challenge in a drama or movie in the future?
In the future if I have an chance to act, I will definitely give this challenge a try. In terms of genre, I always liked romantic comedies so I wanted to try it, and also a story about youths around my age, with a school as a setting, a school drama is something I would like to try.
Is there a place like “Paradise Ranch” or a time where you can recuperate from your busy everyday life?
After the day is over, I drink beer. This beer is a reward to myself, which says “Ah~ It’s over! I worked really hard today.”
Please leave a message to all your Japanese fans, about watching Paradise Ranch, or about your future plans etc.
Not just the lead actors, but everyone who appeared in the show disregarded their own feelings and worked dutifully. As this is a story that talks about a pure, straight love without limits, please watch it. Also, not only is it funny, the setting is set in the beautiful Jeju Island, and I think its a drama which you can enjoy and relax with. I hope that this winter, this drama will be able to warm your hearts.
