PLEASE READ T/N: There’s going to be a lot of talk about this article. Some of you will probably even wonder why we’re even translating an article that ‘bashes’ any of the boys. However, life isn’t always full of rainbows and unicorns. Everyone is subject to criticisms and controversies, and this just happens to be one of those moments. Please read everything with a pinch of salt, and remember that the articles we translate don’t always reflect the beliefs/thoughts of our translators. (aka Don’t shoot the messenger)

“Is it a fabrication, or a fact?”

JYJ held their first European concert in Barcelona, Spain. Opinions on this one concert have been split in opposite directions with one side giving it a thumbs-up and calling it ‘the best performance ever’ while the other is diminishing it and calling it ‘excessive media play’.

What is the reason behind this fierce battle between praise and criticism? There’s also a conflict arising on the difference between the ‘media reports’ and the ‘photos taken at the concert’. An example of this is the actual number of people who went to the concert. All the reporters who traveled to Spain gushed about ’3,000 audience members’ and ‘a complete sell-out of tickets’. On the other hand, fans who saw the photos of the concert raised the question, “You call that 3,000 people?”

‘Dispatch’ has stepped forth to investigate the controversy. We met with three fans who were at the concert through a Madrid correspondent. We then called up representatives of the ‘Culture Center’ and the Korean restaurant that sponsored the concert. We posed questions to the local organizer of the European tour and talked to the staff members who helped out with the concert in Barcelona.

There are a total of six points that are being debated. They include topics such as ‘Did 3,000 people really show up’, ‘Did they pass out free tickets’ and ‘What was teh reaction of the Spanish media?’. If we were to give our conclusion before we began, it would be that there are parts that have been extremely exaggerated by the media. In other words, ‘media play’ was used. On the other hand, there are parts that netizens have diminished and criticized more than necessary.

Dispute 1. JYJ’s concert in Barcelona, Spain. According to C-JeS Entertainment’s report on the 10th of last month, 80% of the tickets had been sold. Considering the fact that the concert venue seated 4,000 people, this meant that according to C-JeS, they had already sold 4,000 tickets.

 On the day of the concert, the Korean media reported that the number of concert attendees was 3,000 people. But some netizens have been stating that it was impossible for 3,000 people to have shown up, using the photos taken inside the concert venue as proof.They said that the media was exaggerating the numbers. Then how many people actually showed up to watch the concert? We heard what representatives of the Korea Culture Center and the local promoter had to say about the issue. We also received a photo from someone who attended the concert.

 A. To state the conclusion first, it wasn’t 4,000 or 3,000 people. According to local reporters, the number was actually between 1,000 and 2,000 people. The ‘Poble Espanyol’, in which the concert was held, can hold a maximum of 5,000 people. In the photo that was provided to ‘Dispatch’ by Tak Bitna(20), a Korean resident living in Spain, one can see that over half the standing area is empty.

 Tak Bitna, who attended the concert, said, “It couldn’t possibly have gone over 2,000 people. You can see in my photo that the back of the standing area is empty,” and “Representatives and staff members took up a lot of seats. Only the areas lit up by glowsticks were actual fans.”

 In a phone conversation with ‘Dispatch’, a representative of the Korea Culture Center in Spain stated, “The concert venue actually holds 5,000 people. We believe that around 2,000 people showed up because it looked like they filled less than half the venue,” and “The reason why the back looks so empty is because everyone rushed forward once the concert began.“

 What is the official stance of the promoter who sold the tickets? In a phone conversation with ‘Dispatch’ on the 2nd of November, a representative of ‘Open Music’, the local promoter of the European tour, admitted that they hadn’t sold 3,000 tickets. He said, “It’s not a sold-out concert. We didn’t sell all the tickets,” and “Though Berlin isn’t sold-out yet either, it’s more popular than the Barcelona performance.“

‘RPDP’ (Radio Programas del Peru’ wrote the only Spanish review for the concert but this was a Peruvian reporter, not a Spanish one. According to the review, there were around 1,000 people at the concert. They reported, “1,000 fans gathered for the Barcelona concert.”

 Dispute 2. What was the extent of JYJ’s influence and popularity in Spain? The photos of the concert attendees provided by ‘C-JeS’ are all of Caucasians, but actually, the majority were of Asian backgrounds. Meanwhile, Korean media reported that fans from all over the world had gathered in Spain to watch the concert and included people from Spain, France, Switzerland, Japan, Thailand and even South America. What was the actual ratio of races at the concert?

 

A. The opinions on the ‘fandom’ ratios were split. Tak Bitna stated that there were many Asian fans at the concert. She said, “Asian people, such as Chinese or Japanese people, took up half of the concert attendees,” and “The atmosphere was great. No one left before the end of the concert.“

 Testimonies flooded in that fans from all over the world had gathered for the concert. One representative who worked as a staff member said, “Fans from all different nationalities came for the concert. There were some people who flew in, even from the U.S., to watch the concert,” and “Of course, the majority of the fans there were Asians, but anyone could see that there were fans from all over the world.“

 Laura(20), who lives in Madrid, explained that some of the Caucasian fans were ‘otakus’. She said, “There are a lot of ‘otakus’ in Spain who like Japanese manga. They love the Japanese culture, and they began taking interest in K-pop because K-pop’s popular in Japan,” and“Because this concert was held at the same time as the ‘Manga Festival’, a lot of ‘otaku’ fans from Madrid went to Barcelona.”

 What’s most important is the atmosphere inside the concert venue. The people who actually did attend the concert enjoyed the performance and passionately cheered JYJ on. It’s indisputable that the air inside the concert venue was humming with passion and excitement. Tak Bitna(20) stated, “The atmosphere was wild and enthusiastic. Though the fans came from different countries, they all came together to support JYJ,” and “Everyone waved their glowsticks till the very end of the concert.”

 Dispute 3. On the morning of their Barcelona concert, JYJ attended the Manga Festival and gave a performance. They sang two songs and met with a total of 800 fans. What exactly is the Manga Festival that JYJ attended and what relation does it have with JYJ’s concert?

 A. JYJ stood on stage to perform at ‘the 17th Manga Festival’, which was held at Barcelona’s La Farga de L’hospitalet on the 29th of October. This was a first for a Korean singer to perform at the festival. The ‘Manga Festival’ is one that attracts over 60,000 people every year and is visited by people who like Japanese comics. JYJ were invited to perform at the festival.

 According to a Spanish reporter at the Manga Festival, JYJ were chosen as one of the few characters selected by the festival. That is why they were invited and that is why they performed ‘Get Out’ and ‘In Heaven’. At the time of the invitation, C-JeS Entertainment was planning the Barcelona concert and when the invitation was received, the concert date was set to match with the festival.

 According to a representative who is well-versed in Spanish culture, the Manga Festival played a big role in spreading the Hallyu Wave in Spain. He stated that most of the people who like manga are ‘otakus’ who are into Japanese culture. Their interest in Japanese culture carried on to an interest in K-pop. JYJ’s Spanish concert was aiming for such a synergy effect by setting the concert date in the same time period as the Manga Festival.


Dispute 4. Some netizens voiced criticisms that too many of the concert tickets were overissued(?). Specifically, there were too many VIP invitations. They claim that many people were attending the concert for free because invitations were given out by the Culture Center in Spain and the Korean restaurant (Seoul Jung) as both were sponsors.

A. The answer is, this is ‘false’. Though some netizens claim that free tickets were given out, it is impossible to confirm this. There is no way to confirm how many tickets the organizer and C-JeS Entertainment distributed. However, it was confirmed that the Korean Culture Center of Spain received VIP tickets from the agency.

According to a representative of the center, a total of 50 VIP invitations was given to them. But because the center is located in Madrid and only Madrid, they couldn’t just hand out these invitations to anyone. The representative explained, “We were given 50 VIP tickets the day before the concert. Because there’s quite a distance between Madrid and Barcelona, we couldn’t distribute the invitations.”

Most overseas concerts by domestic singers are done with the help of that country’s Korean culture center. Therefore, it is normal for these centers to receive VIP invitations from the singers as a show of gratitude for helping out with the overseas concert. It was the same case when B2ST performed in Madrid this year and the tickets that were given to the center were distributed accordingly.

Also, the Korean restaurant ‘Seoul Jung’, which was a main sponsor of the concert, was in charge of providing JYJ with goods, mostly food, more than monetary funds. We were unable to confirm if tickets were distributed to them. In a phone conversation with ‘Dispatch’, ‘Seoul Jung’ stated, “JYJ’s promoters have been asking for our help from a year ago, and we agreed to help them out,” and “We don’t provide them with monetary funds. We just provided them with food.” When asked if they gave out free tickets at the restaurant, they said, “No comment.”

Dispute 5. C-JeS stated that fifty major TV and news mediums fought to get coverage of JYJ at their Spanish press conference. Several domestic media reports stated that the local media ‘El Mundo’ “praised JYJ as three sexy Justin Biebers”. What was the actual media response like for JYJ? Did they receive enough praise to, for example, land them a front cover article?

A. To put it bluntly, no. Through a search on Google, we could see that not many well-known media reporters wrote about JYJ’s Spanish concert. Though fifty different overseas mediums were present at the press conference, not all of them were there to cover JYJ’s concert. Most had been there to cover the ‘Manga Festival’ that was also being held in Barcelona.

There weren’t many articles done related to JYJ. According to a representative of the Korean Culture Center of Spain, there were only two Spanish articles written about JYJ, done by ‘El Mundo’ and ‘LaVanguardia’. But even these were not reviews of JYJ’s concert and were instead articles about the Manga Festival with the added information that JYJ attended the festival.

Let’s take a look at ‘El Mundo’ for example. JYJ take up one sentence in the entire article. “JYJ are like sexy Justin Biebers. They opened themselves up to the American music market, working Kanye West to sing ‘Ayyy Girl’.” 90% of the article deals with the Manga Festival. Also, not a single photo of JYJ could be found on ‘El Mundo’ or ‘LaVanguardia’.

‘Radio Programs del Peru’ dealt with JYJ’s Spanish concert has an important piece of news and this reflected the K-pop craze that is going on in South America. ‘RPDP’ has its own K-pop section and JYJ’s Spanish concert was written about in this section.

 

When taking into account the testimonies from a Korean residing in Spain who attended the concert, a representative of Spain’s Korean Culture Center, a representative of the local organizer, and a representative of Spain’s Hallyu culture, one can see that certain aspects of JYJ’s Spanish concert were slightly exaggerated. The actual number of people who attended the concert was closer to 2,000 people and there was a lot of empty space. There isn’t much interest in them yet and only two articles were written about them in Spain, which were just references to them while talking about the Manga Festival. It isn’t right to exaggerate JYJ’s popularity within Europe.

But regardless of all the fuss, JYJ’s continuous search for new challenges should be recognized. JYJ are the first Korean singers to hold a solo concert in Spain. The fact that they have taken this first step is meaningful enough. They took the first step for K-pop, small though it was, and the fact that they had their presence in Spain recognized is significant.

Disputes have been breaking out online between those who are proud of JYJ and their first Spanish concert and those who are skeptic and dissatisfied. One side feels wronged to see JYJ’s achievements dismissed and diminished while the other side is dissatisfied with all the exaggeration. Though I understand where both sides are coming from, as someone who was there at the concert, I’d rather avoid the conflict entirely. There’s no need to exhaust oneself with such an argument.

This is only JYJ’s first step into the European market. Just like how they started from the ‘bottom’ again, on stages that were almost too embarrassing to be called an actual stage, in Japan as rookies after being hailed as stars in Korea. But they know that they must keep going forward, no matter how unsure they are of their future. And they are paving the road that they are pursuing with courage, a road which everyone else will just follow.

I won’t talk about the number of concert attendees as I’ve already written an article about that controversy. Whether there were a hundred people there or a million, people will only believe what they want. I can see where people are coming from when they raise controversies over the issue as they point out the empty areas behind the audience members in photos that were taken. It was because the organizers had people enter the concert venue in small numbers at a time (almost so slowly that it got boring to wait in line for so long) to ensure that there wouldn’t be any accidents.

This is justified as at the Manga Festival performance, a fan fell over while running towards the stage to get a better view (It should be noted that even after the nasty fall, she got up with no hesitation and started running for the stage again). It was surprising and almost touching to see blue-eyed Westerners showing the passion most characteristic of Korean fans. Shall I say that it was also different from watching Japanese fans, who are usually reserved and don’t dare to get too close to celebrities, cling onto their favorite Hallyu star. The enthusiasm at the concert was beyond anyone’s imagination (though I’d prefer to have found a different expression as I feel that this phrase is used too often that it’s lost its impact).

As soon as the concert ended, the members of JYJ said, “We feel somber.” There could be many meanings behind this statement. There isn’t much time for any of us to look back on what we’ve done till now, through the bitter and sweet times. For those like JYJ who have taken the time to reflect on themselves, they grow and mature that much more.

JYJ are getting ready for a concert in Germany this weekend. No matter what, a flood of controversies are sure to spring forth from this concert as well. But regardless of that fact, the fans will be ecstatic to be able to meet their favorite stars in real life, and they will express this joy to their hearts’ content. Like how they did in Spain. The members might feel somber again. But they will continue to move forward and think of their past experiences in a more positive and optimistic way. Just like how they spent all those days as rookies again in Japan.

Popular group Tohoshinki Changmin’s Korean drama [Paradise Meadow Complete DVD Box I] and [Paradise Meadow Complete DVD Box II] (released on 2 November 2011) have dominated both the #1 and #2 spots on the 14 November Oricon Weekly DVD Drama Charts.

On the same ranking for the week of 28 June last year, Tohoshinki leader Yunho’s drama [No Limit ~Heading to the Ground~ Complete DVD Box I] and [No Limit ~Heading to the Ground~ Complete DVD Box II] (released 16 June 2010), also achieved #1 and #2, showing that the members have successfully managed to become “actors”.

[Paradise Meadow] is a romantic love comedy about a divorced couple that meets again after 6 years and ends up living together under the same roof. The actress who acts as the wife of the character that Changmin plays, Dongjun, is the rising actress Lee Yeon Hee who acted in the drama [East of Eden].

 “JYJ in Berlin, what’s the hidden 1mm?”

The last concert of the ’2011 JYJ World Tour’ was held on the 6th of November at Berlin’s Tempodrom. JYJ became the first Korean singers to hold a solo concert there. On that day, 2,800 fans from all over the world, including Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Poland and Russia, gathered for the performance.

When we met JYJ during their rehearsal, they looked so natural(?). In tracksuits and with no make up on. Watching them dance and sing with ease was quite a different sight to see from their usual concert performances. The audience was quite unusual as well with flags of European countries fluttering in the wind. There was also an abundance of witty Korean placards. Not even disabilities could stop the fans. One of the greatest hidden sights at the concert was watching a fan in a wheelchair, enjoying herself and cheering with enthusiasm.

We’ve put together the unusual sights, the ’1mm’, of Berlin, Germany that we saw for ourselves.

◆ “JYJ in tracksuits, rehearsing like it’s the real deal”

While rehearsing before the beginning of the concert, JYJ looked completely different from what they usually look like on stage. With no make up on, hair unstyled and in comfortable track pants and t-shirts. Their look was so natural and one that we don’t get to see often. Though they wore comfortable clothes, they made sure to check every aspect of their performance. Junsu even made sure to check over the volume of the sound systems. Yoochun and Jaejoong went over every move and conversed with the staff members.

◆ “Korean? Ok! Eu Kyang Kyang! Let’s laugh together”

There were a lot of witty Korean placards at the concert. Though it was an unfamiliar language to them, the fans even used internet lingo as they wrote, “It’s OK, let’s laugh together. Eu Kyang Kyang.” There were others who had witty phrases on their placards like “Jaejoong, I’ll Protect You”. Some fans even wrote their names in Korean on their placards for JYJ to see and most seemed to be quite comfortable with ‘Korean’.

◆ “From France to Greece, the flags of the world are all here”

They’ve even transcended nationalities. Fans from all over Europe gathered for JYJ’s Berlin concert. You could tell by the flags that were on display. From up close, we could see various flags of Europe representing countries such as France, Greece, Poland and Italy. Even Asian fans were waving their flags from countries such as China, Japan, and Thailand. It was an interesting sight to behold as we could see K-pop’s global influence.

◆ “Fans in wheelchairs, disabilities aren’t a problem”

Not even disabilities can hinder them. We caught glimpses of a fan with physical disabilities at JYJ’s Berlin concert. She was in a wheelchair and had a tube connected to her throat. But she was more passionate than anyone when it came to cheering for JYJ. She wore red, the color of JYJ, from head to toe. Moving her arms left to right, she sang along to the Korean songs. Her disability was nothing but a disability. It didn’t stop her from showing her enthusiasm

 

◆ “Carefree European fans, Shake it!”

It felt like a club. That was how carefree the European fans were. When JYJ danced, so did they. They waved their arms from left to right, and jumped to the beat of the music. They danced for the entire two-hour concert and didn’t stop. They were quite different from the slightly passive(?) Korean fans who just wave their glowsticks. With the fans expressing their emotions through their body movements, the atmosphere inside the concert was hotter than ever.

Three members walked onto a dark stage. The concert venue was filled with the hum of people talking before it was suddenly swamped by the screams of female fans. Stable vocal skills and extravagant performances. You could properly feel the popularity of K-pop that had spread to Europe.

The ’2011 JYJ World Tour’ concert was held at the TEMPODROM in Berlin, Germany on the 6th of November. This day’s performance was the final destination of JYJ’s world tour that spanned over thirteen cities in the three continents of Asia, North America and Europe in locations such as Taiwan, Thailand, New Jersey, Vancouver and Spain.

This was the first time that any Korean singer had held a solo concert on German soil. The 2,800 fans who had gathered for the concert from all over Europe were seen milling about around the concert venue four hours before the concert even began. They showcased their passion for JYJ with Korean placards, fans and glowsticks.

JYJ were more energetic than ever as well. They dominated the stage as they ran around it non-stop. Waving their arms from left to right, they poured their passion out for their fans to see. Showcasing live skills that didn’t falter, even with intense dance moves, JYJ’s varied repertoire from drama OSTs to solo performances lit up that night in ‘Germany’.

◆”An impressive beginning, letting the world know who JYJ are”

The concert began with a video of JYJ’s new song ‘In Heaven’. JYJ, who walked on stage amidst the screams and shouts of their fans, kicked off the concert with a rendition of ‘Empty’, a dance track from their English album. After the enthusiastic first performance, the members gave their first greeting as they said, “We’re happy to be meeting with our Berlin fans.”

The exciting stage continued with JYJ rotating between their English and Korean albums as they sang ‘Ayyy Girl’, ‘Pierrot’ and ‘Be My Girl’. Even with quiet an intense set of dance moves, the members’ stable harmony and high notes stood out. The three members of JYJ were in harmony.

The solo performances were repertoires that left one with quiet an impression. Yoochun performed and was followed by Jaejoong and Junsu. The three members captivated the hearts of their female fans with Yoochun pulling of a heated rendition of ‘I LOVE YOU’ with female dancers, Jaejoong singing ‘I’ll Protect You’ and Junsu singing ‘You are so beautiful’.

◆”Their hit songs lead synchronized chants from European fans”

The excitement in the atmosphere kept growing as time went by. When ‘Found You’, a OST piece from the drama ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’, began playing, the fans’ screams reached their peak. Though it was an unfamiliar song in Korean, we got the opportunity to see the fans in the crowd sing along in synchronized chants (called ‘떼창 or ‘Ddae Chang’) with perfect pronunciations.

This song was followed by ‘Be the One’, ‘Fallen Leaves’ and ‘Mission’. The members were seen drawing out a response from the crowd as they passionately ran around the stage and made eye contact with their fans. However, we were slightly disappointed by the problem in the sound system during ‘Fallen Leaves’, which meant that we couldn’t hear Yoochun’s voice.

Last of all, JYJ sang ‘In Heaven’, the title song of their first Korean album, and let their fans know that the concert had come to an end. To this, fans shouted “I love you”, and “Don’t go” in Korean. JYJ catered to their fans’ wants by performing an encore piece, looking as though they were promising that there would be a ‘next time’.

◆”Europe’s fans cried and laughed for two hours”

The support from fans was passionate. The stage continued on for approximately two hours and the crowd was lit up by glowsticks of red, the color of JYJ. The group was also met with a flood of camera flashes. The fans, who filled almost all the seats from the first to the third floor, continued to show their support for the entire duration of the concert, long though it was, and showed just how excited they were.

Though these were unfamiliar Korean singers, the way the fans showed their support was the same as in Korea. They chanted the members’ names in between verses of songs and sometimes sang along in synchronized chants. Though they had different nationalities, faces and skin colors, their way of cheering for their favorite stars was no different from that of Korean fans. The shouts and screams sounded louder because it was a small-scale venue.

They had their own way of enjoying themselves. During exciting dance performances, they danced along with JYJ. When a ballad was being sung, they waved their hands from left to right and got lost in their emotions. When JYJ jumped, so did their fans and when JYJ danced, so did their fans. It was a time to enjoy the free atmosphere and the Europeans’ passionate concert culture.

◆”Early morning tent pitchers show their enthusiasm at night too”

Approximately 2,800 fans gathered for the concert. Dispatch checked and saw that around 2,00 seats were empty in the 3,000-seat concert venue. A representative of C-JeS Entertainment who we met in Berlin explained, “2,800 fans attended the concert. 120 of those tickets were VIP tickets that were distributed.”

But the fans’ enthusiasm could be felt, even the day before the concert. Some fans came and stood in line from the night of the 5th. Josethine(23), a female college student, stated, “You have to take this ticket and exchange it for a seat number on the day of the concert. You can’t help but wait in line from the night before to get a good seat.”

A hundred or so fans gathered at ‘Potsdam Square’, a famous tourist spot in Berlin, to practice on their fan chants. 21-year-old Michaela said, “We came here to practice the cheering moves and chants of Korean fans,” and “Though Korean is difficult, I kept practicing and now it flows from lips so easily.”

◆”JYJ, a chance to confirm their chances of surviving on their own”

Through their Berlin concert, JYJ became the first Korean singers to hold a solo concert in Berlin. More than 70% of the fans who attended the concert were not Asian with most being fans who had come from all over Europe. The rest were Japanese, Thai and Taiwanese fans, as well as some Koreans who are currently residing in Germany.

The people who drew our attention the most were the disabled persons who attended the concert in wheelchairs. It was great to see them enjoying the music, regardless of their ailing bodies. Also, there were many families who came together, with children holding on to their parents’ hands. It was a moment to witness K-pop’s growing influence.

The response for the concert can be determined by the sales made on MD products. More JYJ related goods, such as t-shirts or necklaces, were sold after the concert than before it. Most fans left saying, ‘I feel satisfied with the concert’ while many of them were seen waiting in front of JYJ’s car. They looked like they didn’t want to accept that the concert had ended.

JYJ’s Berlin concert was more about ‘hope’ than ‘size’. Though it was a small-scale concert with only 3,000 seats available, there was more passion and enthusiasm there than anywhere else. It was also a moment that proved that JYJ could survive on their own as they received support from their fans, regardless of race, skin color or age.

Group JYJ (Jaejoong, Yoochun, Junsu) have moved on from Spain to take over Germany.

On the night of 6 November, in the Tempodrom, over 3,000 fans were gathered and cheering loudly for an encore.

The Europeans, who had gathered from Northern European countries such as the Netherlands, Finland and Sweden, from Eastern European countries such as Poland and Russia, as well as from other regions such as France and Greece, sang along with JYJ for two hours with perfect Korean pronunciation and waited for an encore stage while shouting “We love you JYJ!”

JYJ performed a total of 15 songs for the two-hour concert and ended their European tour in success with their concert in Berlin, Germany after becoming the first Korean singers to hold a solo concert in Spain.

The reception they received in Berlin was through the roof. The ticket reservation site’s server crashed as soon as it opened in October and the tickets sold out on the same day. To match this excitement, fans were seen gathering four hours before the concert to stand in line and wait to enter the concert venue.

The concert organizers said, “Before the concert, there were already fans pitching tents and queuing up like they had for the Spain concert. This is a rare sight for a pop singer’s concert in Germany, and there were many rare sights to be seen at this JYJ concert.”

 Amidst the passionate cheers, JYJ gave an amazing performance. Showcasing their slick dance moves for ‘Empty’ and ‘Ayyy Girl’, JYJ showed off their powerful vocals with ‘In Heaven’ and ‘Get Out’, leaving their European fans deeply moved by their talent.

Before the concert, JYJ said, “We really wanted to come, and finally we have made it to Germany to meet with everyone, we’re really fortunate. The food in Germany is really good, and we like the parks as well.”

Member Kim Junsu also made a special mention, saying, “I’m very happy to be in Germany, the country of Sylvester Levay, the composer of ‘Mozart’ and ‘Elisabeth’ who has always been like a father to me. We are thankful to have received great strength from everybody, and next year, we want to present an even more active JYJ.”

After the concert, a portion of the fans could not help but cry, and even stood in front of the concert hall, singing JYJ’s hit songs, showing their unwillingness to leave.

17-year-old Isabelle from Germany said, “Because of JYJ’s music, I’ve grown to like Korea a lot, and am currently studying Korean. I’m really touched that I was able to hear the three of them live.”

Yagoda from Poland said, “I’m really thankful that JYJ could come, and I really want them to know this, and this was an unexpectedly fantastic experience, they must come again!” Ana from Sweden said, “The three members are really cute when they speak German, and I can feel their love for Europe, so I’m really happy. They dance well, sing well, and are too cool! I loved everything (about them)”

JYJ’s European concerts started after their 10 country tour that kicked off in 2011. JYJ’s decision to hold concerts in slightly foreign cities is meaningful, and shows their courage to take up the challenge of getting more people to know about their music.

CEO Baek Chang Joo of C-JeS said, “The Kpop fever has just started to take shape in Europe, but since it’s JYJ, we felt that we could hold a solo concert, albeit a small-scale one. We are really thankful for the unexpected passion and support given by the European fans, and we will definitely want to come back again for the world tour next year.”

With the end of this concert, JYJ have completed their long voyage of 13 cities in 2011. JYJ expressed, “To be able to hold concerts in North America, Asia and Europe is a very meaningful result.  The start of December will be our time to rest, and aside from taking a good break, we plan to focus on writing music, and will continue working hard in preparation for future world tours!”

 ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Packing hurricane-force winds, an Alaskan storm of “epic proportions” slammed into coastal communities, sending some residents fleeing to higher ground as it tore roofs from homes and knocked out power.

The strongest storm to hit the state in four decades carried with it heavy snows and rains. The precipitation sent water levels rising late Wednesday night in Nome, causing flooding in low-lying areas, the National Weather Service said.

“It’s barely beginning to wind down along the coast,” Stephen Kearney, a meteorologist for the Weather Service in Fairbanks, said late Wednesday night.

Emergency officials warned that areas on Alaska’s western coast between Norton Sound and Point Hope were vulnerable to a possible surge of sea water that could bring varying degrees of flooding to villages already soaked.

However, there were no new reports of substantial damage in Nome late Wednesday night, the National Weather Service said.

“The sea level will remain steady into the early morning hours and then start to come down tomorrow morning,” Kearney told the Anchorage Daily News.

Flooding was reported in Point Hope, where the water came within 10 feet of the airport runway, but the community still had power, Kearney said.

Earlier, the storm produced 85-mph gusts, well above hurricane force. But emergency managers said that the winds had begun to taper off and were clocked with still-potent gusts of 55 mph. The storm passed through more southern points of its path.

Some villages, such as Kivalina, could be even more vulnerable with winds shifting as they head to Russia, officials said.

Water reportedly reached some reached homes in at least four Native villages, including Tununak and Kipnuk, state emergency managers said earlier Wednesday.

“This is a storm of epic proportions,” said meteorologist Jeff Osiensky with the National Weather Service. “We’re not out of the woods with this.”

The last time the communities saw something similar was in November 1974, when a storm created a sea surge that measured more than 13 feet. The surge pushed beach driftwood above the level of the previous storm of its type in 1913.

The weather service said “a potent upper level disturbance” rotating around the Bering Sea storm is expected to bring 3 to 8 inches of snowfall to the Anchorage area by Thursday afternoon. The service issued a winter weather advisory for Anchorage in effect until noon Thursday.

Jeremy Zidek, spokesman for the state’s emergency management agency, noted there have been no reports of injuries, and that damage so far has been largely limited to blown-out windows and battered roofs. Nome, Hooper Bay and Tununak reported scattered power outages. During outages, officials were able to maintain contact with communities by satellite phone and VHS radios.

Wednesday’s planned test of the National Emergency Alert System was cancelled in Alaska due largely to the weather, KSRM-radio reported.

The highest wind gusts recorded — 89 mph — were at Wales at the western tip of the Seward Peninsula, which forms the U.S. side of the Bering Strait, said Bob Fischer, lead forecaster for the weather service in Fairbanks.

Winton Weyapuk, president of the Wales Village Corp., said the community suffered more lost sleep than damage.

“People said they were worried,” Weyapuk said. “When the wind gusted here, it was pretty loud inside their homes.”

Some families moved to the school overnight as a precaution. Water came high into dunes in front of the village and approached the school steps, he said. But a drive through the community of 136 before the sun came up revealed little damage.

The southeast direction of the wind helped, Weyapuk said.

“The wind was blowing parallel to the beach instead of from the south or southwest, which would have brought the waves straight in,” he said.

In Nome — the biggest of the coastal communities with about 3,600 residents — wind gusted to 61 mph. City officials said Wednesday afternoon that they closed and barricaded streets in low-lying areas where flooding was reported and urged residents to keep clear of those areas.

Residents along Front Street, which runs less than 100 feet from the seawall that protects Nome from the Bering Sea, were asked to voluntarily evacuate Tuesday night. They stayed with friends on higher ground or at one of two shelters opened by the city at a recreation center and at a church, Brown said.

About 180 miles to the northeast, in Kotzebue, the regional hub for northwest Alaska villages, the storm had quieted down by 10:30 a.m.

Wind gusting to 74 mph had damaged a few sheds and roofs. But power, phones and other utilities were not interrupted, said Dennis Tiepelman, public administrator for the Northwest Arctic Borough.

“Just debris and loose stuff flying around. No power outage, no utilities were off,” Tiepelman said.

As the storm moved north to the Chukchi Sea at midday, a 14-foot rock seawall was holding up in Kivalina, one of the villages hardest hit by coastal erosion in recent decades, said community spokeswoman Colleen Swan.

Damage so far was limited to tin roofing on homes.

Swan’s sister, Marilyn Swan, made the five-minute walk to her job as the city clerk. By the time she arrived, she was covered with clumps of snow.

“I’ve never seen it that bad before,” she said. “We’ve had storms, but this is pretty strong.”

The storm also pounded Tununak, 519 miles northwest of Anchorage. Water rising in a river had reached boardwalks in the Yupik Eskimo village, resident Elizabeth Flynn said.

The state and emergency managers in the villages have long prepared for the powerful storms that batter Alaska’s western coast, holding twice-yearly meetings on dealing with emergencies. In the past few years, the state has held evacuation workshops as well, Zidek said.

The Coast Guard had received no calls Wednesday morning from vessels seeking help from the storm, Petty Officer 1st Class Sara Francis said.

Francis said the storm hit after most crab fishing had concluded.

“We’re kind of in a lull with a lot of the fisheries,” she said.
