[Trans] 120615 Kim Junsu, Listening To Favourite Music And Singing To Heart’s Content… Is There Such A Perfect Genre Still?

FOCUS 9th Anniversary Interview – ‘Nation’s Musical Actor’ Kim Junsu

He is currently no longer awkward with the term, “Musical Actor”. Though in the beginning, he joined without understanding the ‘music’ in musical well. However the more he indulged in it, the more he fell into the charm of musical. During the depiction of “The Last Dance” and “I Am My Music” at his first solo concert after the release of his first solo album, the feelings swelled up was not once or twice.

Though he is already one of the best idol, singer and musical actor, Kim Junsu was more than happy to welcome challenge. Musical is another beginning for him. Another stage for him to present his songs. “Is there such a perfect genre around? Listening to my favourite music, singing songs while living a life of different characters. Will it touched audience? All the actors and actresses and staffs… their simple and passionate love for musical is very admirable. So fantastic.”

It was not an easy decision. At that time, the prejudice against an idol standing on a musical stage was extreme. Besides, the conflicts with his ex-company had him struggling with the decision. Therefore it was no surpise that he rejected at first. “The burden was huge. At that time, I felt that I could not do it. But after that, I listened to the music from Mozart and truly loved those music. As I can relate the lines and lyrics to my situation, I get into the character easily when I was performing.”

Musical is a stage that gave me limitless inspirations. If I were to say that a singer who’s on stage gained exhilaration and energy from the impromptu reactions (from the crowd), then for musical it’s the gaining of different reactions from the audience every different day and thereafter improving oneself for the next stage performance. This solo album is also inspired by musical.”

As an idol singer who succeeded as a musical actor, he is currently awaiting the next new challenge. He has been focusing on production and OSTs. With a strong determination character of finishing anything he started, he is not afraid of challenging new genres. He is also prepared with a mindset of ‘suffering bitterness’ ten times for the sake of ‘tasting sweetness’ once.

“I think that by not being complacent with current status and endlessly working hard to show a better self is ‘challenge’. Though it’s too early to do production now, but when time comes, I would want to challenge injecting other sentiments in OSTs. I think that happiness is not attaining what I dreamt of but to be thankful for what I’m having right now. Thus I am feeling happy right now and thus wish to try other challenges.”

Kim Junsu is a soccer player?

The mind analysis for Kim Junsu is very simple. 50% of music and 50% of soccer. It will be 100% music when he’s making music and 100% soccer when he’s on the soccer field. His love for soccer is almost on par with his love for music. “(You) should know right? I am in celebrity team, FC MEN. I really like to play soccer and thus would meet up with friends to chat and play soccer to relieve stress. Such kind of normal life activities are very precious. In the past, I do not even had the time to drink a cup of tea with my friends. It was like running on a wheel, constantly working. Right now when I’m tired, I will try to find simple pleasures in life.”

To Focus: Congratulations on your 9th anniversary ^^

To this, Junsu sais , “If you release an album, you have to attend the basic broadcasting activities, but these activities cannot be done at all. Even while creating this album it was already assumed that “broadcasting activities cannot be done” but as the album still had to be released, it was a helpless situation.” “Therefore, we had to prove ourselves even more with the quality of the album, and the music video. Although it is just one album and music video, we had to show something even better” he emphasized.

If you look at Korea, in the situation where you cannot attend broadcast programs, it would be impossible to create such a music video.”

Following that, he said, “Although I cannot attend broadcast programs, I think that I hold on to my freedom of expression. I can show more variety of color,” emphasizing on the positive aspects.

3. Oh who could this be? Isn’t it his majesty the crown prince!
When I arrived at the waiting room, hyung (Park Yoochun) was already there. Although we live together, we have not seen each other at home for a long time since we are both busy. As he was filming “Rooftop Prince” in Incheon, he also came by our set on Yeongjong Island. Perhaps it was because “Rooftop Prince” ranked first on the day he came. Hyung was smiling very widely.

Translation 120213 “Failure Is Also An Experience; Bitterness Also Has It’s Value”

[Trans] 120213 “Failure is also an experience… ‘Bitterness’ Also Has It’s Value” – Junsu’s Interview With The Daily Focus

(Kim Junsu has gained the attention of people for taking up challenges and achieving results. He is not complacent, and always does his best to progress.)

Kim Junsu Speaks To Reporters About ‘Challenge’

Someone once jokingly said, “When you realise that it’s late, then it must be really too late.” In this extremely competitive society, compared to “challenging”, learning to “give up” is more a facet of the life of the youths today. If there is no “challenge” there will be no result.

But the process before getting a satisfactory result is very important. Both ‘The 88 thousand won generation’ and ‘Jobless youths’ alike, would simply say they are not up to it before taking on the ‘challenge’. If this is their attitude, even if they managed to land a job in the company, they would be unable to adapt to society and would often feel lost and helpless. When he/she is not familiar with the work and has to rush through it, it will be tough even if he/she is trying to build relationships with colleagues in the company.

Newbie reporters Kim Jungwoo (29), An Soyeon (24) and Choi Joo Heung (24) take learn simple lessons from Kim Junsu, an ordinary youth turned top idol star, and a singer that continues to “challenge” himself as a musical actor, on ‘challenges’.

Pressure Towards Challenges

Kim Jungwoo: Challenges are called challenges because they are difficult and thus makes one fear them. Life is interesting because there are challenges. If situations are placed before you simply as they were, how uninteresting would that be? Junsu-ssi, it seems like you are like everyone else, always challenging new areas. All the musicals you appear in, be it “Mozart”, “Tears of Heaven” or “Elisabeth”, are all being performed for the first time locally. It must be very pressurising to (take on) a character without anyone to refer to.

Kim Junsu: To me, challenges are a double-edged sword. Actually, as an artist, there are not that many things you can choose from. If you do not want to be eliminated, then all you can do is to constantly change. Of course, there are times when it just cannot be done, but even if you fail, it is a valuable experience.

Dating And Marriage For An Artist

An Soyeon: People seem to start learning from here, things like marriage do not seem to be things that (just happen) naturally. I think that (even normal) things which have to be done in your life can also be considered challenges.

Choi Joo Heung: That’s right, aren’t they called the 3-stages of life? Dating, marriage, having children… This is an era where you have to work hard to fulfill the things like “When I am this age, I should have become this right?” which you would have imagined since you were younger.

Junsu: Perhaps it is because we are all aware of that, that artists including myself do not date carelessly, because we know that we would receive a lot of unwanted attention. You cannot walk around as you wish either. Once you know (about the risks), you begin to hesitate. In my case, because I was not aware (in the past), I used to just do things recklessly. On hindsight, I was acting blindly. But having a heart that does not fear has allowed me to move forward. My character of wanting to finish whatever I start has helped me a lot.

(Kim Junsu, who is a singer as well as a musical actor, in conversation with Focus News’ newbie reporters, Choi Joo Heung, An Soyeon and Kim Jungwoo (from the left).)

“You gain as much as you lose
I have developed a habit of always thinking,
What is it I have gained”

Sometimes Ordeals Are Necessary

Soyeon: I think it is better to regret after you have tried. If I think about it seriously, no matter what the challenge is, I do not have much to lose.

Joo Heung: In the past, I used to be the type that would think very hard (about things). I had the habit of always thinking about things specifically, like “What will I be like in a year’s time?”. However, while I was preparing for the reporter’s exam, everything was a blank and nothing seemed to appear in my mind. I was lost, but everything started from having no plans. Compared to a year ago, today I am more focused on achieving my goal starting with the smaller things, like what I need to accomplish tomorrow.

Junsu: It may also help to imagine the worst-case scenario. Sometimes you also need to experience difficulties, having to experience “bitterness” 10 times in order to experience “sweetness” is also worth it.

Jungwoo: It seems important to manage your mindset. For me, should I fail an exam or interview in the company, I always thing “Seems like I am not fated” or “Seems like I failed because there is a better place waiting for me”. Perhaps it is because of all this that the feelings of failure usually do not hit me as hard.

Joo Heung: Even if it is a company that you struggle very hard before getting in, it does not mean that it is the end of your challenges. It has been 2 months since I entered the company, whenever I receive crticism from the seniors about articles that I write, it is always hard for me. Junsu-ssi must experience many such instances as well, I am curious how you overcome them.

Junsu: Even if it is something which you cannot achieve immediately, as long as you have the heart of wanting to work hard at it, you will succeed. Work hard to find breaks through your struggles in order to succeed.

Soyeon: Have you ever had second thoughts about becoming an artist?

Junsu: I did during debut. Not being able to date freely, not being able to have your own life, it was hard. But as much as I had to give up all this, I also gained a lot, so while we were having activities, I grew into the habit of thinking about what I could gain.

Jungwoo: It seems very important to know how to be content with what you have. During my training, I had to leave home very early and only get back very late at night, but I have been able to find employment in a company that allows me to exercise my potential, and for this I am very thankful. At first I realised there were difficult obstacles holding me back, but the sense of accomplishment (after overcoming them) is also very big. Although there are times when it is hard, but as long as you control your own emotions, you will be able to control your heart.

Soyeon: When I was preparing to get a job last year, everyday was heartbreaking. After all, how lucky must you be in order to get a job even before you graduate. From now on, my first mission is to settle down as a reporter in Focus.

Joo Heung: Being able to do the job that I have always wanted to is amazing, which is why I feel kind of dreamy. Not many people are able to get the job which they have dreamed of since they were young. The difference between “very tiring” and “very tiring, but enjoyable” is very big. Firstly, for me, it is very important to find a job that suits you. The starting point should be what you like, then you work on it from there.

Soyeon: I want to live being a reporter for more than 20 years. I want to be a reporter that says only what is necessary, and listens more to what other people have to say.

Junsu: Recently, I have been very interested in producing. By looking at the agency system and naturally learning how musicals or singers are made.

“You are always strong enough to withstand the difficulties
Think of people less fortunate than you are
Find happiness in despair.”

Everything Depends On Your State Of Mind

Jungwoo: Finally, please give some useful advice to the younger generation like us, who have just stepped out into society.

Junsu: Everything depends on your own state of mind. Although Mozart became famous because he was a music genius, but his life was an unfortunate one. Even rich people may not be happy, isn’t it? Rather than being in despair over the way you are, be aware that there are others that have it harder than you. If you can find happiness from there, then you could achieve your dreams and overcome failure, isn’t it? It would be good if everyone could bear in mind that you are always strong enough to withstand the difficulties. Let’s work hard, everyone. Fighting!

[TRANS] 120210 After ‘Mozart!’ and ‘Tears of Heaven’, Appearance in ‘Elisabeth’

[TRANS] 120210 After ‘Mozart!’ and ‘Tears of Heaven’, Appearance in ‘Elisabeth’

JYJ’s Kim Junsu may not be unfamiliar to you, but he has a new title – musical actor Kim Junsu. It has been 2 years since his debut in ‘Mozart!’. When news of his debut in ‘Mozart’ broke, we thought that he was just venturing into another field, but he went on to act in ‘Tears of Heaven’ and ‘Elisabeth’ and became one of the leading respectable musical actors with star quality. Days before the premiere of ‘Elisabeth’, we met up with a passionate Kim Junsu.

===========

To Kim Junsu, his debut in the musical “Mozart!” was a risky challenge. While experiencing strife with his management company in 2009, he chose the musical ‘Mozart!’ as his first step after eight months of vacuum. He had never been interested in musicals. “In the end, the first musical I saw was the musical that I would act in,”he laughs. But, he emphasized: “If I were to count my biggest challenge in life, it would be acting in musicals.”

“I like the music so I challenged musicals, but I was feeling vague about the unfamiliar genre. After a long time since their last official activity, he was the first member in JYJ to start his activities so he felt very burdened about it. Will I do well when I start acting this art piece? I was very worried. I calmed myself and thought that I have to do well since I had already started.”

However, his worries were unfounded. Tickets of the musical, which starred other musical actors, were sold out early and he was reborn as a musical actor in ‘Elisabeth’. As time goes by, Kim Junsu receives more favourable comments for being a musical actor. “The amount of hardship that I had experienced at that time and the decision to act in musical was difficult, I was able to gain confidence and make a comeback thanks to the support and concern of many people,” he laughed.

I have never once watched a musical. I must have been roped by musicals since I like them this much. In order to learn about musicals, I have to be fully immersed in them. I want to do my best till the end to reach my ideal since I have already started. It is my task to look at the art piece until I dislike it every time I act in a musical.”

‘Elisabeth’ is Kim Junsu’s third musical and it is one that has received a lot of love for 20 years since its first performance in Vienna, Austria in 1992. It is a musical about the story of ‘Death’ and an Empress who fell in love.

In the play, he transforms again to the role of ‘Tod’, which is also the transcendental ‘Death’. ‘Death’ is a character who seduces the Empress beautifully and sweetly. “As ‘Death’ is transcendental and immaterial, its first appearance on stage is special. You can feel it wherever you are seating at. It is not ordinary,” he said.

As there are almost no lines for his role and he has to use expressions and gestures to express himself, it is the biggest difficulty. “Since there are no lines, it is hard to express my intention of wanting to speak. However, it is difficult as there are no correct answers. I want to know how to view the ability to express unrestrictedly as a strength. It seems that I can enjoy myself on the musical stage now,” he said with gleaming eyes.

As a musical actor and gaining explosive popularity as a JYJ member with many activities, he smiled and said, “I want to grow old in a cool way.”

“I don’t want to be at the top of public interest. Won’t popularity end ultimately? Instead of getting the most popularity, I want people to remember that I am a singer even after a long time has passed. Until I feel that ‘I have done well’”.

The peculiar connection between Kim Junsu and Jo Seung Woo is eye-catching. Both of them are consistent stars who are also South Korea’s musical ticket powers. Coincidentally, Kim Junsu’s ‘Elisabeth’ premiere falls on the same day as Jo Seung Woo’s ‘Doctor Zhivago’ premiere. In reality, both of them exchange messages and support each other’s performances, thus they have a senior-junior relationship. “I got closer to Seung Woo-hyung after watching his performance in ‘Zorro’. Although we talk a lot about musicals, we also often confide in each other. He is a cool and comfortable hyung to be with,” he said.

These are Junsu’s words about them being rivals. “Hyung is the best musical actor and I am just a newcomer who started now. I am honored to be compared to hyung, but I also feel burdened. Please do not compare the two of us from now on (laughs)!”
