[TRANS] 130918 ‘Our Neighborhood’s Master’ Coach Lee Eun Woo Says, “5 Matches, 5 Losses? I Want To Applaud Them”

The 11 week-long journey of KBS2′s ‘Our Neighborhood’s Master of Variety and Sports’ has finally come to an end. The badminton rounds seemed to feel longer than any of the other sports matches, because the celebrity had hadn’t won a single match. Five matches, five losses. Though these are despairing results, more sweat was spilled than ever before.

In July, the celebrity team and staff entered the realm of badminton, not even knowing how to hold a racket properly. In two months, they have become players who could go against highly skilled amateurs and live to tell the tale. We met with Coach Lee Eun Woo, the mastermind behind the team’s rapid improvement, to hear about the behind-the-scenes stories of their journey.

ourneighbirhoodbadmintonourneighborhoodbadminton1

– How would you rate the team as a professional?
They’ve improved greatly over a short period of time. The lessons I held with the celebrity team is completely different from lessons I regularly hold. Because it was important to bring them up to a level where they could compete, I had to teach them a lot of things in a short period of time. I think we covered a month’s worth of teachings in a day.

– How much did everyone practice?
Three hours a day, three or four times a week. Some members even came every day to practice. We would start practicing together once I was done with all my lessons at 9p.m. Even I found it hard to play badminton till one in the morning in the blistering Summer heat. But I knew just how hard the celebrity team were trying, so I put all my passion into teaching them. They would ask me for lessons in the weekends, and they frequently contacted me to ask if I could rent out the gymnasium for them to practice.

– Who practiced the hardest?
I couldn’t really choose one person because they all worked so hard.

– Which member is exceptionally athletic?
Of course, it’s Kang Ho Dong. Every time he’s in the gymnasium, he can become so concentrated that it always surprises me. He’s exceptionally athletic and witty at the same time. Most of all, he’s very good at absorbing things quickly. He’s the kind of person who you can teach one thing to, and they’ll learn ten things off it. He’s played tennis for a while, and it probably wasn’t easy for him to get rid of his habits, but he’s fixed them or changed them to suit badminton. He’s quite a special athlete. There’s a reason why he’s the greatest wrestler of our time.

– Then which member is exceptionally unathletic?
Max Changmin isn’t very athletic at all. But I think badminton suits him more than the other sports categories. He also works very hard. Though he couldn’t visit the gymnasium often because of his busy schedule, he personally came up to me and asked me for a coach so he could practice by himself. Whenever he came to a practice session, he had that intense gaze that he has during matches, from beginning to end. It surprised me.

It’s the same with Chansung. When I tell him why he’s making the mistakes he makes after a match, he says, ‘I know, I know what I’m doing wrong.’ Watching him shed tears broke my heart. It’s because I know that your body isn’t always at the same level as your brain is. Badminton is a fast-paced game that requires a lot of practice so that hitting the birdie becomes a reflex, and they didn’t have enough time for that to happen.

ourneighborhoodbadminton2

– What’s the reason why Jo Dal Hwan and Lee Soo Geun couldn’t succeed?
I think Jo Dal Hwan and Lee Soo Geun were the perfect example to show that badminton isn’t a sport that you can improve in drastically over a very short period of time. Of course, the two people worked very hard. But I think it was that they just didn’t fit with badminton. It’s like how you can’t be good at every sport, just because you’re on the national team. Jo Dal Hwan had already sustained injuries in his shoulders and knees. I heard that he even had to get surgery done. Because badminton requires a lot of movement in the knees and shoulders, it must have hurt for him to come to practices. There are many cases where badminton players quit after getting surgery done on their knees or shoulders. Even if you rehabilitate your right knee after a surgical procedure, your left knee is bound to get injured sometime later. That’s how much you subconsciously think about your injuries. In Lee Soo Geun’s case, I think he suffered from the misfortune of changing partners so often.

– How important is a partnership in badminton?
About 40%, with the remaining 60% depending on skill. That’s how important it is. Most badminton enthusiasts have a partner who they’ve played with for a long time. If a B-level team who have played together for a while goes against an A-level team who have just met, the B-level team have a higher chance of winning.

– Who was the ace in the deck?
Hands down, Lee Man Ki. He’s an A-level player in his 50s. Though his skills may differ from that of an A-level player in their twenties or thirties, but he’s one of the most talented players of his age range. Because he’s been playing for a long time, he knows how to send the birdie to certain spots in the court, and he knows how to calculate moves while he plays. And the fact that he’s left-handed is a great advantage to him.

– But his results weren’t that great.
If an A-level player has to play a match with a D-level player, the stress and responsibility means that they can’t play to their fullest potential. If we had given him a partner at a similar level, he would have done better. If the Lee Man Ki – Nickhun partnership had stayed in the game, the results may have changed.

ourneighborhoodbadminton3

– Badminton was the only sport where the team didn’t get a win.
Though each sport was hard on the team, badminton is one that especially relies on experience. It’s not easy. In one way, it was pretty obvious that they were going to lose. It was impossible for them to win people who have been playing for so long. I always told the team, ‘Take it easy’. It’s also a psychological game, so the first people to gain a point are also the people who usually win. It may have been a stretch to make celebrities who had just started playing badminton to be technical experts. Even normal people need at least two years to master how to use their wrist properly. The most important thing for the team was to focus on getting the birdie over the net. In two months, the celebrity team were able to catch the opposing team’s smashes and defend themselves. Setting aside winning and losing, they were amazing.

– The members cried a lot.
If they hadn’t worked hard, they wouldn’t have cried. Even I felt like I was going to cry after the Jeju match. I felt bad because they had never won once. Though I knew why they had lost, my heart ached because they had put so much time into their matches. It would be nice if the viewers could know just how hard they’ve worked, but that’s something only I and the members know. Even the staff won’t know the extent of the team’s hard work because they were only there when they had to film.

– Which moment was most heartbreaking for you?
It was when Max Changmin and Lee Jong Soo suffered from a slump during their Busan competition. Though this is a variety show, they were getting stressed and suffering from a slump like real badminton players. It just meant that they wanted to do well that much. After losing their Busan match, they didn’t even go back up to Seoul. Instead, they went drinking and quite a lot to drink.

– Which member would you like to keep training with?
Max Changmin, Chansung and Lee Ji Hoon. I think they could do so well if they kept going. Max Changmin fits badminton quite well, and Lee Ji Hoon is athletic and strong. If they had slowly worked their way up from the basics, they could have done a lot better. They had to get into matches as soon as they could, so there wasn’t time for them to build up the basics. Chansung worked really hard, but he didn’t do very well because he didn’t have a lot of time to grow.

ourneighborhoodbadminton4

– All the matches are over. What would you like to say to the team?
Instead of giving them consolations, I’d like to praise them. Though they cried a lot, I don’t think they had a reason to. They did so much better than others would in that time period. I want to applaud them and tell them that they did well.

[TRANS] 130819 [Review] Nissan Stadium’s TVXQ: Amassing 72,000 Audience Members Is Easier Said Than Done

homintimenissan

72,000 pearl red fanlights, a clock-shaped stage, a concert with the concept of ‘time’, the first non-Japanese singers…

Hallyu duo ‘TVXQ’ held the finale of their ‘TVXQ LIVE TOUR 2013 ~TIME~’ Five Dome tour at the Nissan Stadium in Yokohama, Japan and it was a blockbuster performance of epic size, concept and meaning.

The Nissan Stadium is a concert venue that can hold up to 72,000 people. Other than the seats needed to set up lighting and equipment, every single seat in the entire venue was filled, a rare sight to see in such a large scale.

Starting off with ‘FATED’, a track from their latest Japanese album ‘TIME’, which was released in March, the concert was filled with the sounds of songs such as ‘I Don’t Know’, ‘One More Thing’ and ‘Y3K’. The concept of ‘Time’ shined through in their concert. The main stage, which was 95m long and 22m high, was decorated with mechanical parts that looked like they were once part of a clock. At both ends of the stage stood time capsule-shaped equipment that helped U-Know Yunho (27) and Max Changmin (25) move around the stage. The entire experience felt like traveling through time.

The lighting effects that used the glow-in-the-dark watches that had been distributed to all 72,000 fans was a highlight of the show. Used once dusk settled in the sky and TVXQ began singing ‘Heart, Mind & Soul’, the watches changed the color of the fans’ fanlights from pearl red (the color that represents TVXQ) to other colors and made the audience a part of the concert. The colors were controlled using laptops and wireless signals.

These watches were similar to the LED bracelets that alternative rock band ‘Coldplay’ used when performing as ‘Xyloband’. The characteristic of these watches is that they give a sense of uniformity and extravagance. The ultimate highlight of the concert was when the second to fourth floors of the seats were controlled separately to create the letters ‘We Are TVXQ’.

homintimenissan1

The Nissan Stadium, which also hosted the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, has been graced by legendary Japanese singers such as X-Japan, L’Arc~en~Ciel, SMAP and EXILE. Having already held arena and dome tours, TVXQ have become the first non-Japanese singers to hold a concert in the venue, proving yet again how popular they are in Japan.

Though it was a concept with an amazing size, concept and meaning, it would have been too much of a stretch had it not been for the two members’ strong foundation. U-Know Yunho’s dance skills and Max Changmin’s vocal talent exuded a masculine charm, and the duo had their fans laughing with small talk and imitations of celebrities and the animation ‘Attack on Titan’.

U-Know Yunho and Max Changmin’s teamwork shined through in songs such as ‘Catch Me’ and ‘Why’, the last song of the concert and the first song of their encore. Their ability to run around the main stage and the 120m long extended stages on the side for three and a half hours was quite surprising. The 120m long stages also became the route that the members’ 3m long monorails traveled around.

The two members were joined by a five-man band that featured percussionist Fukugana Matsuo and drummer Hanato Detsuya, a 20-member dance crew and 100 backup dancers.

If TVXQ’s previous concerts focused on creating awe-inspiring performances for the members, tonight’s performance focused more on being a ‘show’ with many sights to see. A good example of this is the fireworks show that took place when the encore performance came to an end with ‘Somebody to Love’. Though most of the attendees had been women in the past, many men and families could be seen in the crowd during tonight’s concert.

homintimenissan2

Atsushi Abe (42), who was at the concert with his wife Mana Abe (42), said, “The reason why I like TVXQ is because they’re cute, amazing, and can sing and dance,” and “At first, I began liking them because I was influenced by my wife, and I like them because they have a lot of male fans and they take care of their male fans.”

Eiko Gamiyauchi (66), a long time fan of TVXQ, said, “I like all of TVXQ’s songs, and I feel more strength and vitality when I listen to their music,” and “I’ll be watching the concert with my daughter, and the other four members of our family have gotten seats elsewhere to enjoy the concert. Everyone in our family is a TVXQ fan.”

The members couldn’t hide their gratitude for their fans. U-Know Yunho said, “The stadium is so big. We’re the first international artistes to hold a concert at the Nissan Stadium. And it’s all thanks to you all.” Max Changmin said, “To be honest, holding a concert in such a large venue can be physically draining, but you all have given us so much power.”

They also expressed their pride as they said, “Today marks a new page in TVXQ’s history. I’m happy to be spending this precious time with you all” (Max Changmin) and, “Nissan Stadium was a gift for you all. Thank you!” (U-Know Yunho)

There were Koreans in the audience as well. Ms Lee (28), who filed for a break to visit Japan for two days, said, “I thought that Tokyo Dome was the highest one could do, but I was proven wrong by this stadium. I’m so proud of them and I decided to fly to Japan to watch them perform.”

Fans arrived at the concert venue in the morning, regardless of the 30 degree weather and the fact that they had assigned seats. The lines that started in the New Yokohama Station, which is 20 minutes away from the Nissan Stadium, were as amazing as the view of the stadium filled to the brim with fans.

Tonight’s concert proved that TVXQ, who made their Japanese debut in 2005, are still evolving and becoming more popular than ever. Many of the fans were middle school students who had become fans two to three years ago. Jueri (13) and Gapuyu (15), who had come from Chiba and Nagoya, said, “Not only are they good-looking, but they’re also great singers and dancers. We recently became fans of TVXQ.”

Youko Kikuta (34), a staff member of AVEX LIVE, the company that’s worked with TVXQ since their first Japanese concert, said, “When they made their debut, they started off in a small-scale theater, but they’ve been able to come so far because they’ve touched their fans at each other, prompting fans to bring their friends and family,” and “Their latest success is more meaningful because they achieved it through only their passion and high quality performances, rather than through a fad or the power of the media.”

A representative of the J-POP industry stated, “Though it’s true that K-pop and the Hallyu Wave have died down in Japan, TVXQ will continue to grow in popularity with a growing fandom.”

TVXQ attracted 72,000 fans in the same venue on the 18th, with a total of 144,000 fans joining them across two days. Fans who were unable to go the concert were able to attend a live viewing that was held in 38 theaters across Japan, including Hokkaido and Osaka.

[News] 121202 Junsu Successfully Concludes World Tour in Germany

From his singing to his dancing, everything about XIA Junsu enchanted people in Germany.

JYJ Junsu

JYJ Junsu

From his singing to his dancing, everything about XIA Junsu enchanted people in Germany.

In a total of 12 different cities, Junsu performed 13 times in front approximately 53,800 people for the world tour. The finale of the world tour took place at the Turbinenhalle in Oberhausen, Germany on the 30th of November. It is Junsu’s second time performing in Germany after JYJ’s performance in Berlin. It was the first time an Asian performer appeared at the location.

World-famous bands like Korn, Motor Head, Stone Sour and Caliban have performed at the Turbinenhalle prior to Junsu’s appearance.

The chilling cold was unnoticed by 1,800 fans who heated up the building. The fans showed up at the location hours before the start of the concert and danced along to Junsu’s music and compared their hand-made posters while waiting to enter.

When the concert finally began, all of the fans stood up from their seats and began to dance along. Junsu showed his gratitude for his fans by placing all of his energy into his performances.

During the concert, Junsu performed a total of 17 songs, 11 songs from his official first album and songs from musicals. The concert began with “Breath”, followed by “No Gain”, “Lullaby”, “Intoxication”, “Set Me Free” and more.

The English single Uncommitted was also a special gift. Another song included, “You are so Beautiful”, an OST from a drama as well as songs like, “Last Dance” from the musical “Elizabeth” and more.

For 2 hours, Junsu showed off everything he learned from touring the world on his own and left a lasting impression to the people in the audience. With his strong vocals and sexy dance moves, people just couldn’t get enough.

When his title song “Tarantallegra” began to play, the crowd went wild with outbursts of screams and danced along with him throughout the whole song.

There was a special moment in the middle of the concert where Junsu gave his fans three wishes. One 18-year-old fan from Turkey wished to dance on stage with Junsu. The young fan revealed that he had learned the moves to “Tarantallegra” by watching a video online and was unable to hide his excitement. Junsu was also very grateful for the fan who had learned all of his choreography.

Even after the concert had ended, fans continued to applaud and didn’t want to leave the building. Junsu even went down from the stage to bow to his fans to show his gratitude.

When he completed his concert, Junsu stated, “Thank you for the fans who came from all over the world to see my concert. You have shown me hope and allowed me to start another dream. I will cherish all the applause and tears I have received from 12 different cities and make sure to repay all of you.”

It was a moment that made everybody curious about how far Junsu will be able to go in the future.

Meanwhile, Junsu released his first official solo album Tarantallegra last May and began to travel to cities in places like Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, Shanghai, Hong Kong, New York, Mexico and more.

[Trans] 120502~120503 JYJ Twitter Update‏s

Junsu: Elisabeth… When the role of Death god was first given to me… I hesitated a lot… Though I knew better than anyone else that it is a good character in the great work… “Is this really an ‘outfit’ suitable for me?” Such a doubt came to me… But right now at this moment, after the finale performance ended, putting aside whether I did well or not

Junsu: As a musical actor, isn’t it a period of time where I am able to learn a lot of things? I tried thinking like this.. From the start to the end, the Elisabeth cast that became my strength… As we are able to be together and becoming my strength, I felt blessed… Really grateful, and grateful to every audience who cried and laughed together.

Lee Jae Eun (@beyondmonica): The parent meeting with the Suk Jun’s class teacher has finally decided. Thanks to my ‘built’ genes, the 6 years old Suk Jun is like a 7 years old now. Other than this, he doesn’t seems to gain anything from mum. Like this, the scariest thing in my world is to meet with the teacher. Nervous nervous nervous!!!! Goosebumps…;;;;;;

Junsu: @beyondmonica Keke Suk Jun ah, come to hyung’s

Yoochun: ^________________________^ Come~ Come~ Smile~

Yoochun: ㅡㅡ;; Not asking you all to cry, it’s to smile!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Popular male duo, Tohoshinki, held the finale of their tour, which attracted 550,000 audiences, at the Kyocera Dome Osaka on 23 April.

This is their first nationwide tour since the duo restarted activities in Japan in January 2011. Yunho (26) and Changmin (24) said, “As this is the finale, we will be even more passionate than usual, and give it all we have!” and showcased their explosive power from the first song onwards. As the fans were extremely passionate, Changmin said, “Everyone is too hyped up. It’s noisy!”, making the entire venue burst out in laughter. In addition, there was also an incident where Changmin had a cramp in his left foot during an intense dance track. The duo performed 25 songs, including their new single “Still”, passionately in front of an audience of 45,000.

Changmin expressed his gratitude to the fans again, “Today is the finale, but it became a time when we really feel how fortunate we are.” Yunho, who teared during the Tokyo Dome concert on 15 April as he was so overcome with emotions, gave a message to the fans which also sounded like something he was saying to himself. “It is a pity (that it is the end), but it’s alright! Because we can meet again.” The emotions upon the ending of the tour which brought 550,00 people together cannot be expressed in words. The fanclub event for 100,000 people will begin at the end of June.

[TRANS] 120417 Tohoshinki, Tokyo Dome For The First Time In 3 Years, “No anxiety”. Event For 100,000 Fans Decided.

Popular unit Tohoshinki held the finale of the additional concerts of “Tohoshinki Live Tour 2012 ~TONE~” in Tokyo Dome on 16 April. On this stage, which marks 3 years since they last had an independent concert in Tokyo Dome, Yunho smiled saying, “I’m so happy that I cannot put it in words.” Looking at the venue which was dyed red by lightsticks, they expressed their gratitude to the fans, “Everyone’s ‘red power’ is a great source of strength to us. When we restarted activities last January, and when we begun the tour in January this year, we were nervous and anxious. However, there is no anxiety now! Because there is everyone who supports us, and allows Tohoshinki to continue. Thank you for waiting all this while.” The duo showcased their charisma with powerful performances of 25 songs.

They appeared dressed in white, and showcased energetic stages with dance tracks such as “B.U.T (BE-AU-TY)” and “Superstar”, hyping up the atmosphere in the venue. They opened the concert by greeting the fans with, “We will give our all and showcase all that we have worked hard to prepare,” (Yunho) and, “In this huge venue, it’s just Tohoshinki and everyone! Let’s sing and dance together and enjoy ourselves.” (Changmin)

This tour makes use of “3D Mapping” to create optical illusions, and also has many other interesting points including the use of umbrellas as props. For their solo stages, the duo showcased contrasting performances. Yunho used a sexy dance in “Honey Funny Bunny” to highlight his charms, while Changmin performed X Japan’s “Rusty Nail” powerfully with his fist raised in the air, his wild charm blew the crowd of 55,000 away.

Towards the end, the duo went around the venue in floats, and threw small signed coloured balls into the audience stands. The fans were excited and let out deafening cheers. During “We Are”, which was added to the concert, they taught the fans the “T Jump”. When the duo shout “We Are”, the fans in the venue form “T” with their hands. The duo had satisfied expressions on their faces upon seeing this.

During the encore, the audience was prompted to do a wave, and the entire venue became one during “Weep”. During the concert on 15 April, Yunho was moved to tears by the surprise event by the fans, where they filled the entire venue with white penlights. He said, “I felt ‘This is Tokyo Dome’. Tohoshinki likes being on stage the most, and it is when we are the happiest. I think this is a beginning. Tohoshinki exists because everyone exists. Please continue to give us your passionate support from here on.” The duo then took a deep bow.

The tour was of the largest scale thus far for the unit, attracting 250,000 people during their arena tours, and a total of 165,000 people during the three consecutive nights at Tokyo Dome. 135,000 audiences are expected at the Kyocera Dome Osaka concerts, which will be held this weekend (over 3 days), bringing the total number of audiences at the 26 concerts to 550,000. In addition, it has been decided for Tohoshinki to hold fan events in Saitama and Hyogo Prefecture (Kobe) in June and July, which are expected to attract 100,000 people.
