[TRANS] 130817 [Reporter’s Notebook] The Task TVXQ’s Nissan Stadium Concert Has Given K-pop’s Hallyu Wave

hominnissanstadiumtaskTVXQ (U-Know Yunho, Max Changmin) have reached the pinnacle of the Hallyu Wave’s popularity. They will be holding a concert at Japan’s Nissan Stadium (seats 72,000) for two days.

On the 17th and 18th of August, TVXQ will be holding the finale of their ‘TVXQ LIVE TOUR 2013 ~TIME~’ Five Dome tour at the Nissan Stadium in Yokohama, Japan.

A Five Dome tour is a tour that is held in Japan’s five major dome stadiums (Tokyo Dome, Osaka Dome, Nagoya Dome, Fukuoka Dome, Sapporo Dome). Each performance attracts at least 30,000 people and Tokyo Dome can hold the largest capacity of 50,000 people per performance. If two concerts are held in each dome, a Five Dome tour can attract a total of 300,000 people.

Only a handful of singers have held such a tour. Singers who have held such Five Dome tours leave their mark in the music industry as ‘legendary singers’.

What is more impressive than a dome concert is a concert at the Nissan Stadium. With approximately 70,000 audience members per performance, many call it ‘the concert of dreams’.

The Nissan Stadium (formerly known as the Yokohama International Stadium) was built in 1998 and boasts the largest seating capacity of 72,327. It is the place where the finals of the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup was held. There have only been nine singers who have held concerts in the stadium, and they are the Southern All Stars (2004, 2008), Mister Children (2007), B’z (2008), Glay (2009), X-JAPAN (2010), L’Arc En Ciel (2012), Eikichi Yazawa (2012), AKB48 (2013) and Momoiro Clover Z (2013).

Singers who have held concerts at the venue are called ‘the legend of all legends’, ‘the nation’s singer’ or ‘the rookies who have taken the nation by storm’. What must it feel like to hold a concert for 72,000 at once? Singers who have stood on the stage of Nissan Stadium say, ‘It feels like you’re God, looking down at the people of the world.’

hominnissanstadiumtask1

TVXQ are now set to be the first non-Japanese singers to hold a concert at the Nissan Stadium.

It could be said that this will be the pinnacle of K-pop’s Hallyu Wave. A Five Dome tour followed by a concert at the Nissan Stadium. Such a task is not an easy feat that any popular singer can accomplish. When looking at accomplishments in Japanese concerts, TVXQ have climbed as high as they possibly can.

However, TVXQ’s Nissan Stadium concert does not guarantee the longevity of the Hallyu Wave’s popularity in Japan.

TVXQ are basically considered the founders of Japan’s Hallyu boom of K-pop boy bands. It’s already been more than eight years since they made their Japanese debut. Therefore, their Nissan Stadium concert should be seen as the rewards that come from eight years of hard work and experience that TVXQ have put into their Japanese activities.

For K-pop’s Hallyu Wave to continue in Japan, TVXQ’s juniors have a big task ahead of them. The domestic music market should focus more on helping talented rookies with new contents grow and develop rather than being swept up in the euphoria that TVXQ’s Nissan Stadium concert signifies the power of K-pop’s Hallyu Wave.

[TRANS] 130812 JYJ’s Kim Junsu Says At His Busan Concert, “Singing Would Be Meaningless If There Were No Fans”

juneincrediblebusan

JYJ’s Kim Junsu has completed the fourth leg of his Asia tour in success.

A representative of C-JeS Entertainment stated, “Since releasing his second album on the 15th of July, Kim Junsu has successfully toured four cities in a month. Starting in Bangkok, Thailand and moving on to Shanghai, China, and Seoul and Busan in Korea, Kim Junsu has been praised for his ever-evolving stages. Not only did he pull off a perfect performance, but his idea of granting three wishes every concert has been met with an explosive response as a great idea for fan service. The first act of Kim Junsu’s second solo album tour has come to an end.”

This latest tour was named ‘XIA 2nd ASIA TOUR in BUSAN’. The day’s performance was composed of a setlist containing songs from his first and second album, as well as his OST songs. Kim Junsu performed heart-wrenching ballads such as ‘Sorry’, ‘Don’t Go’, and ‘Love is like a Snowflake’, as well as explosive and energetic songs such as ‘Turn it up’, ‘Incredible’ and ‘Fantasy’ with Jeri Slaughter’s dance crew to create the perfect concert.

With Kim Junsu’s concert being held in the city of passion, the response he received was out of this world. Even before the concert had begun, fans began chanting Kim Junsu’s songs together and during the concert, they responded to Kim Junsu’s each and every move. When Kim Junsu sang ‘I’m Confessing Right Now, OK?’, fans held placards that said ‘Junsu, Thank You’ and when he sang ‘Sorry’ for his encore, they all switched to blue fanlights to create a sea of blue. In response, Kim Junsu bowed before the song and said, “Thank you for the blue ocean.”

During ‘Genie Time’, when Kim Junsu granted his fans’ wishes, he sang ‘Golden Star’ from the musical ‘Mozart!’, as well as first part of ‘Cherry Blossom Ending’. The most special wish an encore of ‘Incredible’. The fan had fallen in love with the upbeat rhythm and powerful choreography that had everyone in the venue getting up to dance, and Kim Junsu got back on stage after the concert was over to perform the song a second time.

Jeri Slaughter made a surprise appearance on stage and said, “This is the first time I’ve stepped on stage since Janet Jackson’s concert four years ago. I did my best because I was so impressed by Junsu’s care and attention for his fans. The fans’ reaction and response was amazing. It was an incredible moment! Kim Junsu’s music is a never-ending story. His passion will never die.”

Kim Junsu expressed his gratitude and said, “I believe that releasing albums and holding concerts is a way to repay you all for the love you have given me. Though I became a singer because I love to sing, singing would be meaningless if there were no fans. As long as there are fans out there who want to listen to my music, I will always be here to sing for you.”

Meanwhile, Kim Junsu will now be returning to the stage as a musical actor for the musical ‘Elisabeth’. He plans to kick off the second part of his tour in Sydney, Australia on the 28th of September.

[TRANS] 130806 “We Want To See Kim Junsu’s Performances” – The Seoul Arts Center’s Homepage Crashes

Fierce competition for ‘Elisabeth’ tickets, the Seoul Arts Center’s homepage crashes

junetod2013

A flood of fans are aching for tickets to see JYJ’s Kim Junsu (XIA) in the musical ‘Elisabeth’, leading to the homepage of the Seoul Arts Center, who are in charge of ticket reservations for the musical, to crash.

At 10a.m. on the 6th, Interpark and the Seoul Arts Center opened up the third round of ticket reservations for the musical ‘Elisabeth’.

Kim Junsu’s fans flooded in to grab tickets for Kim Junsu’s performances. Almost as soon as reservations opened up, the Seoul Arts Center’s homepage crashed. Though fans could access Interpark, Kim Junsu’s shows were sold out in an instant.

The reason behind the Seoul Arts Center homepage’s crash is probably Kim Junsu’s fans. Many of the posts written on various online communities were made by Kim Junsu and JYJ’s fans and said, “I want to get a ticket but I can’t access the website.”

During the first and second round of ticket reservations, most Kim Junsu-related online communities were flooded with posts about buying tickets for Kim Junsu’s ‘Elisabeth’ performances.

Meanwhile, Kim Junsu, who is charge of the role Death (Tod), attended the ‘Elisabeth’ press call on the 25th of July at the Seoul Arts Center and said, “‘Elisabeth’ is the production that won me the Best Musical Actor Award. I loved working with the greatest actors of the industry and I wanted to feel that excitement again. I’m happy to be working with everyone in this year’s cast. I learned so much from Robert Johansson last year, and I’d like to learn more from him this year.”

The musical ‘Elisabeth’ is a production that depicts the life of the beautiful Austrian empress Elisabeth. Her dramatic life story of love and death is highlighted by the fantasy character of Death.

Ok Joo Hyun, Kim Junsu, Park Eun Tae, Min Young Ki and Lee Jung Hwa will be joined by Kim So Hyun, Park Hyo Shin, Lee Ji Hoon, Kim Isak and Noh Ji Hoon, and the musical will be performed from the 26th of July till the 7th of September at the Seoul Arts Center’s Opera Hall.

[Trans] 130805 ‘Incredible!’ – Why Are Men Flocking To Kim Junsu’s Concert?

Stealing the hearts of men with talents far beyond a normal idol

xiamales

XIA Junsu recently held another concert.

On the 3rd and 4th of August, JYJ’s XIA Junsu held a concert at COEX to commemorate the release of his second solo album ‘Incredible’. Titled ‘XIA 2nd ASIA TOUR in SEOUL’, XIA Junsu captivated 18,000 fans with his fatal charm for two days.

What was most surprising was the wide age range of the audience, as well as the fact that both genders were in attendance. Though the majority of the fans in the audience were women, it wasn’t too hard to find male fans amongst the crowd.

Male fans could be spotted here and there in the concert venue to enjoy the ‘Incredible’ concert. There were some who had come with their girlfriends or friends, but there were others standing in the mosh pits for a full 120 minutes to enjoy the show. There were some who had come alone, and it was apparent that both old and young men were in attendance to be captivated by XIA Junsu’s charm.

Fans who had come with their families could also be spotted. Fathers who had come to the concert holding the hands of their daughters could be seen in the crowd. Actor Seol Kyung Goo had also come with his daughter, with this being his second concert since last Winter’s performance. Many young teenagers could also be seen in the audience. Though XIA Junsu has not had much public exposure since beginning an exclusive contract lawsuit with his former agency in 2009, it was interesting to see the large number of teenage fans at the concert.

Such a sight is hard to see at an idol singer’s concert. Even the reporters at the event were surprised by the large number of male fans. This was more so considering the fact that it was a solo concert and not of a group. It was proof of how much XIA Junsu’s fandom has expanded over the years. The male fans danced, waved their hands and shouted to the rhythm of the music. They didn’t seem out-of-place with fanlights in their hands and MD goods wrapped around their necks.

XIA Junsu said, “There are a lot of male fans here today, like yesterday,” and “Would only the men scream for me?” In response, quite a few men waved their hands in the air and gave a low-toned shout. It was like being a concert by Lee Seung Hwan or Psy.

An interesting moment took place on the 4th. During ‘Genie Time’, when he grants three wishes from the audience, a male fan asked him to sing Lee Sora’s ‘The Wind is Blowing’ and even gave him a piece of papers that he’d written the lyrics on. Though XIA Junsu was surprised at first by the unexpected request, he completed the task with his sweet voice.

Then why did so many male fans flock to XIA Junsu’s concert?

It was probably his extraordinary vocal talent. He’s not just an idol singer who appeals with good looks or tricks, he’s a singer who has unwavering skills that heighten the overall satisfaction of a performance. When men become fans of singers of the same-sex, they usually prefer talented artistes.

Though he was taking on performances so powerful that he was sweating like a waterfall, XIA Junsu’s vocals never wavered and was recognized for his talents. Even men do not put XIA Junsu’s concerts in the same class as other idols.

Add in his masculinity and his ability to appeal to even the smallest emotions, and XIA Junsu is more than capable of captivated even the hearts of men as well as women.

After attending the concert, Kim Jung Hwan (Seoul, Geumchun-gu) said, “Though I had always heard that XIA Junsu was a great singer, I didn’t know he was this good,” and “His voice never wavered, even when his choreography required a lot of movement, and it was amazing. He’s better than anyone when it comes to stage presence.”

Seeing men and families in the crowd at a concert. This seems to be another characteristic unique to XIA Junsu’s concerts. He is no longer the exclusive property of young girls.

TVXQ! — aka 27-year-old Yunho and 25-year-old Changmin — pose for a photo backstage at the July 5 L.A. date to their TVXQ! LIVE WORLD TOUR ‘CATCH ME.’
SM Entertainment

“We are nervous, but extremely excited. Everything feels brand new, as if we just debuted” – Yunho

TVXQ! — aka 27-year-old Yunho and 25-year-old Changmin, undoubtedly two of the biggest names in K-pop history — proved their supremacy as a pair of “K-pop Kings,” by amassing a total of 700,000 fans to their five-stop, Japan Dome tour, “TVXQ! Live Tour 2013 Time.” Continuing the success, the duo embarked on their first world tour titled, “TVXQ! LIVE WORLD TOUR ‘CATCH ME,’” on Nov. 17, 2012, in Seoul, Korea. They dazzled thousands in Hong Kong (Jan. 19), China (March 30) and Malaysia (May 18), and they finally brought the much-anticipated leg of the tour to America for a Los Angeles date on July 5.

The excitement caused by TVXQ’s first L.A. concert was felt at Nokia Theatre on Friday night. TVXQ’s fans, known as Cassiopeia, arrived hours before the show was to begin. Most fans, dressed in red t-shirts (a signature color for TVXQ!) showed support by holding flash mob events as well as handmade signs.

PHOTOS: BACKSTAGE & ONSTAGE WITH TVXQ!

Backstage, TVXQ appeared energized and high-spirited, despite jet lag and exhaustion from hours of rehearsal. The duo spent the last hour before the show relaxing their vocals (Changmin singing Kim Gun Mo’s “Moon Of Seoul”), taking pictures with lucky fans, joking around with staff members and talking to Billboard for an exclusive video interview.

“We are happy that we get to finally meet with our fans in the States,” says leader Yunho. “The show here [compared to ones in other countries] is more intimate. We are nervous, but extremely excited. Everything feels brand new, as if we just debuted. We want to share our good vibes with our fans that have waited so long.”

At 8:30 p.m. the extravaganza began slightly delayed (due to concertgoers’ unwillingness to leave merchandise booths). Ear-splitting screams erupted, red glow sticks illuminated, and some fans even cried as the packed venue watched the duo appear via hanging on wires.

TVXQ!’s electrifying show kicked off with hardcore, back-to-back performances of “Rising Sun,” “Getaway” and “Why (Keep Your Head Down).”

Taking a moment, Changmin expressed his gratitude to the thousands of fans by saying, in English, “We are so thankful to each and every one of you that came to see us tonight.” With an interpreter, he continued in Korean, “I know our U.S. fans have waited ten, long years for this concert to happen and we will promise to make up for it.”

Throughout the two-hour and a half event, the K-pop kings delivered a pitch-perfect live show with masterfully choreographed dance moves, assisted by six male backup dancers, plus special solo performances. For the solo stages, Changmin mesmerized with a cover of Maxwell’s “Whenever, Wherever, Whatever,” in a casual, striped shirt in front of a backdrop of a cityscape visual. Then, Yunho spiced it up by crooning and hip-swerving his way through his solo track, “Honey Funny Bunny,” in a sequined jacket.

‘You Guys Are So Amazing!’

The duo went through their extensive catalog of Korean and Japanese hits, including “Wrong Number” (showcasing perfectly in-sync dance moves down to their feet) “Purple Line,” “Humanoids” (their most-recent K-pop single) “Destiny,” “Dream,” “Catch Me” (wearing LED light jeweled jackets, highlighting the technical “Hulk dance”) “Before You Go” and “Mirotic.” In between performances, various TVXQ! videos were shown on the screen to preview each song.

Before bringing the show to a close, the crowd united as one for a touching moment. At one point, fans held up a placard that read, “We will always be here.” Yunho responded to the crowd in English, “You guys are so amazing! I am touched.”

The highlight of the night came when TVXQ! daringly stormed into the crowd — the first they’ve ever done so in their 10-year career, they told Billboard afterwards. The boys went off in separate directions, running through the aisles, leaving fans (and presumably security guards and ushers) in awe.

After successfully wrapping the concert Yunho reflects, “I was really taken aback to see such diversity in ages. We even saw a lady [who seemed to be in her 60s] singing along to our lyrics. This was a special night for all of us. The amount of response we got was tremendous. We won’t forget this night and we hope that our U.S. fans. will remember this night as well.”

Looking forward, TVXQ! will become the first foreign artist to perform at Japan’s Nissan Stadium on August 17 and 18. The two-day event is projected to bring in a total of 150,000 fans.

Want more TVXQ!? Check back to Billboard’s K-Town for an exclusive video interview with Yunho and Changmin coming soon!
