EDITORS NOTE: Impressions Of “Protect The Boss” and “Scent Of A Woman”

110822 Editorial Impressions of “Protect The Boss” and “Scent  Of  A Woman”

Earlier I posted my impressions of the first “Protect The Boss” and “Scent Of A Woman’ episodes. At the time, I kept them separate, but as time has gone on, I am beginning to see these two dramas as related one to another. We catch glimpses and inferences; images and cameos that link these two productions together as a part of the work of JYJ. The old saying,”You can’t keep a good man down” applies here because the sheer, raw talent of Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu are what is keeping them in the public eye despite the setbacks from their contract disputes. Even the negative things keep their names in the headlines, and that is a blessing. It means that they are constantly before us and producing excellent work that has to be acknowledged even by those who oppose them.

“Protect The Boss” continues to entertain with that underlying theme of corporate rivalry between the Cha male cousins. This rivalry presents itself as continually desiring and having to share goals and people. Somehow, I believe that they are going to have to realize that they will accomplish more together as allies than rivals. How their love lives will turn out is still hard to guess, but both of them deserve happiness. One element that disturbs me is the amount of violence displayed between parent and son, and subsequently between other characters in the drama. It is treated in a comical manner, but relays a subtle message. Also, the amount of maneuvering, backbiting, and intrique are social problems showcased in “Protect The Boss’, and also in ‘Scent of A Woman’.

“Scent Of A Woman” is one of the best Korean melodramas I have viewed. It has such realism, including the circumstances that bring Lee Yoon Jae to a place of desperation, and the fight of Kang Ji Wook against the old system of arranged marriages. There are so many layers to this drama there could have been three or four dramas produced with the available material.

We are finally seeing by Episode 9 the truth about Lee Yoon Jae’s cancer coming to light. Kang Ji Wook literally stands at the door of discovery of what has been motivating Lee Yoon Jae all this time. Will he be strong enough to withstand this new problem in their relationship on top of every other obstacle that has come their way?  Does Kang Ji Wook deserve to lose every family tie in pursuit of his relationship with Lee Yoon Jae. We will just have to wait and see how this all turns out. We may not get what we want, which would be freedom from cancer and therefore life for Lee Yoon Jae, and deliverance from a corporate world rife with inner intrigues and obligations for Kang Ji Wook, but we can hope for the best conclusion. Since we are all imaginative, we can make our own endings if this turns out negatively. The angst in this melodrama is palpable and touches the heart. We can all learn from watching this drama unfold.

INFO-ADMIN POST 110727 Heavy Rain and Flooding Brings Korea To a Standstill

[INFO-ADMIN POST] 110727 Heavy Rain And Flooding Brings Korea To A Standstill

On July 27th, Korea experienced an extreme downpour in the central district that that has not only brought the country to a standstill, but its entertainment industry as well.
It was recently reported that Loen Entertainment’s former building in Bangbae-dong, Seoul was demolished by a landslide caused by the heavy rain and subsequent flooding. Fortunately, Loen moved offices to Samsung-dong, Seoul about a month earlier.
Sunny Hill’s dorm, however, is located right next to the building, and the landslide happened while they were asleep. A representative revealed, “There are three floors to their dorm, and water flooded up to the second floor. The members were all very shocked over the ordeal and have canceled their rehearsals.”
Some celebrities have opted to subways instead of their cars in order to get to their schedules on time. Yoon Do Hyun was inevitably 10 minutes late for his live recording on MBC’s ‘2PM Date‘ and also had to deal with his rehearsal room being flooded.
Several fan accounts of seeing stars like Rainbow’s Jaekyung and Super Junior’s Kyuhyun on subways are also being relayed online.

Some events have been canceled for good, such as the opening of Baek Ji Young’s dog-friendly cafe. With sets being flooded, dramas like “Warrior Baek Dong Soo”, “Gyebaek”, “Heartstrings”, etc have also been making last-minute changes to their schedules in order to coordinate everything accordingly.
Although stars are trying to keep up with their schedules as much as possible, obstacles with communications are making it harder than ever. One representative revealed, “Everyone is checking whether their office, recording room, and dorms were flooded. We have to focus on the artists’ schedules but communication is an issue so we’re all very frustrated.”

NEWS JYJ’s KBS Cancellation Has Damaged Korea’s Image…

[NEWS] JYJ’s KBS Cancellation Has Damaged Korea’s Image? International Fans Say, “We Won’t Buy Korean Products”

A controversy is expanding at a rapid rate as KBS yet again cancelled JYJ’s upcoming performance. Domestic fans have more to worry about than just that as international fans began criticizing Korea’s image, broadcasting system and Jeju Island.
JYJ’s performance on KBS’ ‘Jeju 7 Natural Wonders of the World Nomination Special Program’ was suddenly cancelled. Not only this, but the controversy deepened when girl groups from SM Entertainment, Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun and Kim Junsu’s former agency, replaced JYJ. According to JYJ’s agency, KBS never stated a specific reason as to why JYJ were being pulled out of the performance.KBS, who posted on their viewers’ thread that it would be impossible to allow JYJ to appear on its entertainment programs due to the group’s lawsuit with SM Entertainment in May, has come up to the chopping block once more.
Amidst all of this, posts made by international fans on various domestic portal sites are becoming a hot topic. Most of these fans stated that they began to love Korea because of JYJ and were now thoroughly disappointed by the current situation.
One Egyptian fan stated, “I came to love Korea because of JYJ and I even bought Korean products when I wanted electronic goods,” and “But now I only love JYJ, I don’t love Korea. The fact that JYJ are being treated unfairly because of a greater force is driving me crazy with anger.” A netizen who said she was Australian said, “After I became a fan of JYJ, I began learning lots of things about Korea and I fell for its charm,” and “But because of this event, international fans are worried that there are irrational evils within the Korean entertainment industry and we are enraged. I won’t buy Korean products.”
Fans from other parts of the world criticized the recent event with slightly harsh words as they said, “I was planning on visiting Jeju Island but I will never go anymore” and “How cheap is Korea’s image right now?” Domestic netizens and JYJ fans who saw these reactions are now very worried.
Netizens who read such posts stated, “I’m embarrassed. I don’t particularly like or pay attention to JYJ, but seeing these posts so often makes me feel embarrassed”, “KBS is ruining Korea’s image”, and “Hallyu is a form of cultural diplomacy but who cares if our diplomacy is great when our image is being damaged from the inside?“

Domestic fans are having the same thoughts. One domestic fan expressed her fears as she said, “As international fans began to like Korea because of JYJ, I worry that they will start hating Korea because of this JYJ situation,” and “I find myself unable to say anything to them, except to hope that they don’t start hating everything about Korea.” Another domestic fan exclaimed, “The international fans know everything that is going on domestically. They’ve had to cancel of their flight and hotel reservations that they had made to watch JYJ perform. Not only did KBS miss out on a chance to bring in foreign money, but they’re also a disgrace to Korea.“
Through this situation, not only has KBS damaged its own reputation, but that of Korea as well in the eyes of international fans. Regarding this, KBS stated, “It is our right to choose who performs,” and “We are planning on releasing our official statement once the concert ends on the 20th.”

NEWS South Korea Awarded 2018 Winter Olympics

[NEWS] South Korea Awarded 2018 Winter Olympics

This isn’t KPOP related, but this is big news for Koreans across the globe. Seoul, South Korea hosted the 1988 Summer Olympics and now Pyeongchang, South Korea was named the host of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games!

Here’s the full run down courtesy of JERÉ LONGMAN from the New York Times:

The Winter Olympics were awarded for the first time to South Korea on Wednesday as the city of Pyeongchang was named as host of the 2018 Games.

Pyeongchang had been a persistent candidate after finishing second to Vancouver in voting for the 2010 Games and to Sochi, Russia, for the 2014 Olympics. It had built its candidacy for 2018 on a proposal to expand winter sports in the lucrative Asian market.
The South Korean city won on the first ballot of a secret vote of delegates of the International Olympic Committee, prevailing over Munich and Annecy, France. Voting took place at a general assembly of the I.O.C. in Durban, South Africa.

Pyeongchang will be the third Asian city to host the Winter Games, after Sapporo, Japan, in 1968 and Nagano, Japan in 1998. Its budget for 2018 was far more extravagant than the other bids — $1.5 billion for the actual Games and $2 billion to $6 billion for infrastructure projects, according to news reports, as Pyeongchang seeks to become a winter sports hub.

The South Korean candidacy also enjoyed widespread public support, which the I.O.C. considers an important factor. Its compact plan to have all events within a 30-minute drive apparently was also appealing. And the Olympic delegates seemingly were swayed by the fact that South Korea’s president, Lee Myung-bak, traveled to Durban to make a personal pitch for the 2018 Games.
But the most persuasive factor in Pyeongchang’s bid may have been the chance to further expand the popularity of winter sports in a populous, financially lucrative region. Pyeongchang is located about 100 miles east of Seoul, which hosted the 1988 Summer Games.

The I.O.C. commission that evaluated the candidate cities said in its pre-vote report that placing the 2018 Games in South Korea would “be significant to further develop winter sports in Asia.”
In a final pitch to I.O.C. delegates on Wednesday, Pyeongchang’s bid leaders displayed a map showing that 19 of the previous 21 Winter Games had been held in Europe and North America, suggesting it was time to give Asia another chance. Wednesday’s vote was in keeping with recent attempts by the Olympics and the soccer World Cup to bring their events to places where they had not been previously held.

South Korea has shown its ability to organize major international sporting events over the past two decades. Seoul hosted the 1988 Summer Olympics. And South Korea co-hosted along with Japan the 2002 World Cup. Daegu, South Korea, will host the world track and field championships next month.

Lee, speaking in English, told I.O.C. delegates ahead of Wednesday’s vote, according to The Associated Press, that “Korea wants to give back to the Olympic movement and the world. Pyeongchang 2018 is a national priority of the Korean government and has been for the last 10 years. I guarantee you the full and unconditional support of the Korean government. We worked hard; we’ll make you proud.”

Translation 110608 VBW Representative Thomas Drozda, “Junsu’s Star Marketing Left A Deep Impression”

[Trans] 110608 VBW Representative Thomas Drozda, “Junsu’s Star Marketing Left A Deep Impression”

“Korea’s musical industry is expanding rapidly in a short time, it is foreseen that the growth will be expedited in the future. This will especially be true via the ticketing power of pop stars like Kim Junsu, which left a deep impression on me.”

The representative, Thomas Drozda (46), from United Stages Vienna (VBW), the production company that brought ‘Mozart!’ to Korea, received an interview on the 30th last month.

After witnessing the Korea ticket sales of ‘Mozart!’, Drozda expressed shock towards the influence that stars like Kim Junsu has on the popularity of musicals.

He said, “In Austria, idol stars like Kim Junsu have never tried musicals before”, “The musical industry and the scope of a pop star’s activities never overlap”. He continued, “What is most important, is that Junsu attracted a new level of audience, and this is very valuable. Due to the influx of idol stars with strong fanbases into the Asian musical industry, the audience now has a wider composition.”

Translation 110604 JYJ’s Kim Junsu Gives Multi Cultural…

[Translation] 110604 JYJ’s Kim Junsu Gives Multi-Cultural Family A “House Of Love” As A Present.

Supported by popular group JYJ’s Kim Junsu, the “House of Love” project has once again bore fruit, presenting another family with a gift of happiness.

Proud of You, Junsu

Kim Junsu has been silently working with the UN-established AdraKorea, and has been supporting the “House of Love” project which helps to improve the living conditions of the handicapped and other people in need.

On the afternoon of 3 June, at Taean-eup , Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, a “moving in” ceremony was held for Ga Mo and family. A multi-cultural family, Ga Mo and family were living in an old house with poor living conditions for 40 years or more, but with Kim Junsu’s help, they now have a designated kitchen and washroom, as well as a study room and other amenities for easy living, an elegant and beautiful house made from wood.

At the “moving-in” ceremony, Ga Mo’s family members had tears in their eyes as they said, “I don’t know what to say, but we’re really thankful.” Ga Mo’s niece was smiling happily. “I really like my new study, I can now study hard in my own room, and draw as many drawings as I like.”

The construction of this “House of Love” was led by Jin Tae Gu, head of Taean-gun and Kim Dae Seung, Chairman of AdraKorea, with volunteers and villagers etc participating as well, who also came to congratulate them.

With Kim Junsu’s support, this is the fifth project for “House of Love.” Thanks to Kim Junsu’s help, the handicapped and elderly living alone in Chungcheongnam-do’s Danjin-gun and Taean-gun , as well as other people in poor living conditions, have found a new home. This is the first time a multi-cultural family has become a beneficiary (of this project.)

Kim Junsu started his charitable contributions to AdraKorea in 2008, and this organization has been using their funds to expand the “House of Love” project.

Kim Junsu’s charity activities are not limited to Korea, but also extend to other countries. In Cambodia, the “housing renovation and improvement project” is being implemented. As the “Xiah Junsu Village” had attracted a lot of attention, this project was expanded to other areas including Pusat, improving the unsafe living conditions for the impoverished children of Cambodia.

Kim Junsu’s charitable actions have given more warmth and kindness to the global village.

Trans 110602 CODE V Says “The Second TVXQ…

[Trans] 110602 CODE-V Says, “The Second TVXQ? We Will Surpass Rather Than Imitate” “The second TVXQ? Though that is an honor, we want to surpass them with our skills.”

Five-member vocal group CODE-V have an interesting and surprising charm. Though they are an idol group in appearance, they are actually a talented vocal group. Different from other rookie groups who are awkward at first, this group is confident and actively engaged.

While introducing their title song, they asked, “Do you want to listen to us sing?” and immediately began singing in a capella, their hidden card, on the spot. They even imitated the voices of other stars and said, “We have tens of imitations we’ve been practicing for variety shows.”

(omitted)

◆”The Second TVXQ in Japan? It’s because we sing a capella”

Though they are not well-known in Korea, they are making their mark as Hallyu stars in Japan. Since their debut, CODE-V has been receiving a steady stream of love calls from K-POP fans in Japan. In a survey titled ‘The Korean group whose Japanese debut you most anticipate’, they beat famous singers and came out on top.

CODE-V garnered the attention of Japanese fans as the first vocally talented group from Korea since TVXQ. As CODE-V consists of five members who sing a capella together, they are called ‘The Second TVXQ’ as they resemble TVXQ in the beginning stages of their debut.

“It seems as though Japanese fans think we are like TVXQ in many ways. What makes us similar to TVXQ is that all five members have strong vocals and sing a capella together, though we participated in promotional activities with a dance number. We like TVXQ and respect them. But we’d rather surpass them and show off our own color rather than just imitate them.“

One member spoke up and said, “When TVXQ split, some of their fans became our fans,” while another member, Sol, said, “In Korea, people tell me that I look like KCM but in Japan, they say I look like YoungWoong Jaejoong. When we go out to eat, some people mistake us for TVXQ.” When we joked and said that, ‘These are dangerous sayings that may increase the number of anti fans you have,’ they evaded taking on the responsibility for their words in a cute manner as they said, “These aren’t the thoughts of all five of our members.”
