Hello Asia editor Johnny Au and contributor Erin Smith was on hand to provide coverage. Photos by Johnny Au & Erin Smith. Translation provided by Lynn Ko.

Can you give us a greeting and your impressions of Sydney?

Hi everyone! My name is Xia. I actually visited Sydney back in 2010 with members of JYJ. Sydney is such a beautiful city. As soon as you land at the airport you can tell it’s a beautiful city. I’m very excited to be in Sydney again and it feels a bit different to be here for my concert this time but it’s wonderful.

While you are having your concert overseas and Korea, is there any difference? (e.g. concert, response from fans)

Clearly the most obvious difference is the language. Actually I don’t really feel much of a difference. As JYJ fans alike we start to become one. As a whole there isn’t much difference.

juneaustralia1

Also you are a singer song writer, what inspires you to write songs and where does your ideas come from? (e.g. Incredible)

I have no roles in terms of writing songs or coming up with music. Every song is very different but dance songs like Tarantallegra we actually came up with the beats first then the lyrics but with ballad songs like Fallen Leaves we came up with the lyrics first then the dance moves. So every song is different.

Could you tell us something incredible about yourself that we might not know?

Incredible? I really hope the concert will be an incredible time for my fans and myself. It’s something that cannot be achieved by myself so it has to come from my fans as well. It’s like a fusion of the two energies. So I’m very looking forward to the concert tomorrow and I do hope it’s going to be something incredible.

juneaustralia2

We believe you were first here in 2010 on a mini vacation. Do you have a favourite place in Sydney?

My favourite place in Sydney? Firstly ever since I was a child I have seen pictures of the Sydney Opera House in textbooks, TV and all kinds of media. You name it I’ve seen it! So when I saw the Opera House I thought it was grander than I have imagined. So the Opera House was great, as well as the Harbour Bridge of course. I actually completed the Harbour Bridge climb so that was great. I also really enjoyed your kangaroo steak and crocodile pizza. We were here for a brief amount of time but tried to experience as much of Australia as possible.

How do you feel about performing in the musical Elizabeth, chosen to act the leading role of ‘Death’ for the second time, and what musical do you want to perform in the future?

When I first performed in the musical Elizabeth the fact that my character was ‘Death’ overwhelmed me. I tried hard to think up of how to portray my character. It was a bit of a struggle to come up with something that was against my nature. But I really enjoyed performing the role. For the second time around I wanted to portray ‘Death’ differently. I wanted to colour him differently. It was an incredible experience to do that. In fact I have just announced that I will be performing in another musical this December. Funnily enough the musical is also called The December.

Your latest album Incredible had various types of genres, which genre was the most fun to do? Do you have a favourite song on the album?

The most fun I had? I must say it’s the song Incredible that I enjoyed the most. It an upbeat dance song that was targeted for the Korean summer. And summer makes everyone happy as you all know! I also know its summer in Australia soon so I hope you guys feel the same way I had when I was making the song as well. I actually cannot pick one favourite song on the album as I’ve put in my effort to all songs so it’s hard to choose one favourite song.

juneaustralia3

What can fans expect from your first Sydney concert?

I’ve been doing my world tour since last year and now I’m performing in Sydney so that means I have performed on every continent except for Africa which I am very grateful about. In this concert I want the audience to feel the excitement and joy I feel when I’m performing for them. So I hope everyone has a great time!

What are the main differences between performing in a musical and promoting albums and singles?

When I promote my albums and singles as a solo artist it’s all about me. But when I perform in a musical it’s a very different feeling. It’s the same excitement but the feeling I get at the end of each is very different. All in all there is a difference when I’m by myself or with other people.

Questions from Erin Smith of The AU Review

You took on the name Xia as a desire to be recognized as a star throughout Asia. Now that you have achieved that goal are there bigger desires?

(Laughs) I feel a bit embarrassed! When I first took on the name Xia it actually originated from the word Asia. But forget about being a star and all. I just want to be out there for every one of my fans around the world. That is all I want. I want to perform for every fan around the world. Beyond Asia.

What’s your message to your Australian fans and your plans for the rest of 2013?

I’m very much looking forward to the concert tomorrow. I hope it’s going to be a night I will be enjoying with my fans, breathing in the air with my fans. Performing in Australia is not something I just look forward to by myself. I really hope one day I can come back with my group JYJ. Not sure when that is going to happen but it’s something JYJ is looking forward to. As for the rest of 2013 as I mentioned earlier I have my musical coming up and we also have the Asian Games theme song. It’s quite full on so till the end of the year we have lots of things coming up.

[TRANS] 130914 150,000 People Swarm For Tickets For Kim Junsu’s Concert… ‘Incredible Popularity’

xiajunsuticketsnagoyayokohama

A total of 150,000 people swarmed in to grab tickets for JYJ Junsu (XIA)’s Nagoya and Yokohama concerts.

C-JeS Entertainment stated, “The spotlight is on Junsu’s Japanese tour, which will take him through two cities and six performances. A total of 50,000 people submitted their names for tickets for Junsu’s Nagoya concerts, which will seat 24,000 people from the 8th till the 10th of October, and 100,000 people applied for tickets for his Yokohama Arena concerts, which will seat 33,000 people from the 14th till the 16th. This means that a total of 150,000 people have applied for tickets when there are only 57,000 seats available.”

XIA Junsu’s second solo album was released in July and was praised as a “top quality album”. The album’s title song ‘Incredible’ topped the dance track iTunes charts in eight countries, including Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore as soon as the album was released. It also topped Japan’s Tower Records Charts, and Yinyue Tai’s weekly charts, proving that the singer is receiving a staggering amount of love from both Korea and the world.

A representative stated, “The anticipation for XIA Junsu’s music and top-quality performances, as well as the fact that he will be holding concerts in Nagoya and Yokohama instead of Tokyo, has put him in the spotlight of his Japanese fans. Though we have not run the ballot for tickets yet, he has already attracted a total 150,000 people in one week, despite the fact that he hasn’t been active in Japan. We’re expecting more fans to apply for a ticket as the ticket reservation period isn’t over yet.”

Meanwhile, Junsu kicked off his Asia Tour with the release of his second solo album. Starting in Bangkok, Thailand on the 20th of July, he has performed in Shanghai, Seoul and Busan, and is now preparing for his concert in Australia on the 28th of September and his Japanese tour.

[TRANS] 130812 JYJ’s Kim Junsu Says At His Busan Concert, “Singing Would Be Meaningless If There Were No Fans”

juneincrediblebusan

JYJ’s Kim Junsu has completed the fourth leg of his Asia tour in success.

A representative of C-JeS Entertainment stated, “Since releasing his second album on the 15th of July, Kim Junsu has successfully toured four cities in a month. Starting in Bangkok, Thailand and moving on to Shanghai, China, and Seoul and Busan in Korea, Kim Junsu has been praised for his ever-evolving stages. Not only did he pull off a perfect performance, but his idea of granting three wishes every concert has been met with an explosive response as a great idea for fan service. The first act of Kim Junsu’s second solo album tour has come to an end.”

This latest tour was named ‘XIA 2nd ASIA TOUR in BUSAN’. The day’s performance was composed of a setlist containing songs from his first and second album, as well as his OST songs. Kim Junsu performed heart-wrenching ballads such as ‘Sorry’, ‘Don’t Go’, and ‘Love is like a Snowflake’, as well as explosive and energetic songs such as ‘Turn it up’, ‘Incredible’ and ‘Fantasy’ with Jeri Slaughter’s dance crew to create the perfect concert.

With Kim Junsu’s concert being held in the city of passion, the response he received was out of this world. Even before the concert had begun, fans began chanting Kim Junsu’s songs together and during the concert, they responded to Kim Junsu’s each and every move. When Kim Junsu sang ‘I’m Confessing Right Now, OK?’, fans held placards that said ‘Junsu, Thank You’ and when he sang ‘Sorry’ for his encore, they all switched to blue fanlights to create a sea of blue. In response, Kim Junsu bowed before the song and said, “Thank you for the blue ocean.”

During ‘Genie Time’, when Kim Junsu granted his fans’ wishes, he sang ‘Golden Star’ from the musical ‘Mozart!’, as well as first part of ‘Cherry Blossom Ending’. The most special wish an encore of ‘Incredible’. The fan had fallen in love with the upbeat rhythm and powerful choreography that had everyone in the venue getting up to dance, and Kim Junsu got back on stage after the concert was over to perform the song a second time.

Jeri Slaughter made a surprise appearance on stage and said, “This is the first time I’ve stepped on stage since Janet Jackson’s concert four years ago. I did my best because I was so impressed by Junsu’s care and attention for his fans. The fans’ reaction and response was amazing. It was an incredible moment! Kim Junsu’s music is a never-ending story. His passion will never die.”

Kim Junsu expressed his gratitude and said, “I believe that releasing albums and holding concerts is a way to repay you all for the love you have given me. Though I became a singer because I love to sing, singing would be meaningless if there were no fans. As long as there are fans out there who want to listen to my music, I will always be here to sing for you.”

Meanwhile, Kim Junsu will now be returning to the stage as a musical actor for the musical ‘Elisabeth’. He plans to kick off the second part of his tour in Sydney, Australia on the 28th of September.

[TRANS] 130807 JYJ’s Agency States, “We’ve Submitted A Formal Objection Regarding The Hallyu Concert Controversy”

jyjinheavenpromo

Regarding the ’2014 Incheon Asian Games Commemorative Hallyu Concert’ controversy, JYJ’s agency C-JeS Entertainment stated, “We’re waiting for the final statement of the committee.”

Since February, JYJ have been acting as the honorary ambassadors of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games’. However, when it was discovered that their names were not included in the guest list of the September 1st ‘commemorative concert’, a controversy arose on whether JYJ are being blocked from appearing on a broadcasted program yet again.

C-JeS stated, “Rather than coming to a hasty decision, we will wait for the final statement of the committee.” The representative stated, “We have submitted a formal objection regarding this issue. A misunderstanding arose when the Incheon Development and Tourism Corporation, who are in charge of inviting singers to perform at the concert, notified the committee that, ‘JYJ declined their invitation’. We set the record straight that we have never received an actual invitation to perform at the concert. We have been told that the committee will verify the truth of the situation by tomorrow.”

They continued to add, “The committee is of the official stance that JYJ’s domestic and overseas promotions for next year’s sporting event will begin in September. We will await the committee’s final decision.”

The current guest list of the Hallyu concert features a total of 20 teams including Super Junior, Girls’ Generation, KARA, SISTAR and miss A.

[Trans] 130805 ‘Incredible!’ – Why Are Men Flocking To Kim Junsu’s Concert?

Stealing the hearts of men with talents far beyond a normal idol

xiamales

XIA Junsu recently held another concert.

On the 3rd and 4th of August, JYJ’s XIA Junsu held a concert at COEX to commemorate the release of his second solo album ‘Incredible’. Titled ‘XIA 2nd ASIA TOUR in SEOUL’, XIA Junsu captivated 18,000 fans with his fatal charm for two days.

What was most surprising was the wide age range of the audience, as well as the fact that both genders were in attendance. Though the majority of the fans in the audience were women, it wasn’t too hard to find male fans amongst the crowd.

Male fans could be spotted here and there in the concert venue to enjoy the ‘Incredible’ concert. There were some who had come with their girlfriends or friends, but there were others standing in the mosh pits for a full 120 minutes to enjoy the show. There were some who had come alone, and it was apparent that both old and young men were in attendance to be captivated by XIA Junsu’s charm.

Fans who had come with their families could also be spotted. Fathers who had come to the concert holding the hands of their daughters could be seen in the crowd. Actor Seol Kyung Goo had also come with his daughter, with this being his second concert since last Winter’s performance. Many young teenagers could also be seen in the audience. Though XIA Junsu has not had much public exposure since beginning an exclusive contract lawsuit with his former agency in 2009, it was interesting to see the large number of teenage fans at the concert.

Such a sight is hard to see at an idol singer’s concert. Even the reporters at the event were surprised by the large number of male fans. This was more so considering the fact that it was a solo concert and not of a group. It was proof of how much XIA Junsu’s fandom has expanded over the years. The male fans danced, waved their hands and shouted to the rhythm of the music. They didn’t seem out-of-place with fanlights in their hands and MD goods wrapped around their necks.

XIA Junsu said, “There are a lot of male fans here today, like yesterday,” and “Would only the men scream for me?” In response, quite a few men waved their hands in the air and gave a low-toned shout. It was like being a concert by Lee Seung Hwan or Psy.

An interesting moment took place on the 4th. During ‘Genie Time’, when he grants three wishes from the audience, a male fan asked him to sing Lee Sora’s ‘The Wind is Blowing’ and even gave him a piece of papers that he’d written the lyrics on. Though XIA Junsu was surprised at first by the unexpected request, he completed the task with his sweet voice.

Then why did so many male fans flock to XIA Junsu’s concert?

It was probably his extraordinary vocal talent. He’s not just an idol singer who appeals with good looks or tricks, he’s a singer who has unwavering skills that heighten the overall satisfaction of a performance. When men become fans of singers of the same-sex, they usually prefer talented artistes.

Though he was taking on performances so powerful that he was sweating like a waterfall, XIA Junsu’s vocals never wavered and was recognized for his talents. Even men do not put XIA Junsu’s concerts in the same class as other idols.

Add in his masculinity and his ability to appeal to even the smallest emotions, and XIA Junsu is more than capable of captivated even the hearts of men as well as women.

After attending the concert, Kim Jung Hwan (Seoul, Geumchun-gu) said, “Though I had always heard that XIA Junsu was a great singer, I didn’t know he was this good,” and “His voice never wavered, even when his choreography required a lot of movement, and it was amazing. He’s better than anyone when it comes to stage presence.”

Seeing men and families in the crowd at a concert. This seems to be another characteristic unique to XIA Junsu’s concerts. He is no longer the exclusive property of young girls.
