Good morning 🙂
(Jaejoong, 8:20am KST, English Tweet) Hi~ pic.twitter.com/PpiynrfASj
He’s reading a lot these days, isn’t he?
(Jaejoong, 8:52pm KST) “Don’t Risk Life and Limb For Happiness” – Richard Carlson- (T/N: Original English title is “What about the Big Stuff: Finding Strength and Moving Forward When the Stakes are High”) *Don’t think of everything that is happening to you in your lives as pain. Take these problems, add a strong sense of faith that you will find happiness, and find a solution to them one by one.* There are so many great books out there. pic.twitter.com/f0Jv7PcA3f
The passage from the book that Jaejoong took a picture of reads,
“Some people are able to overcome pain, sorrow, and hardships quite well. These people with hearts of steel are able to vanquish pain in an instant. Though the sudden death of a loved one makes them sad, they are able to overcome it. This is because humans have a surprisingly strong side to themselves. Though we lose things one by one, we find a way to survive.
However, there are times when you get to a point where you can’t take it anymore. At one point in your life, you are met with pain, sudden death, unexpected accidents and despair. Even if you are not a strong person, you must never surrender to these things. Even if you accept the sorrow, never surrender.”
Wait…. what? O__O

Our Changmin has changed~’
TVXQ’s Max Changmin is currently busy training for KBS 2TV’s ‘Our Neighborhood’s Master of Variety and Sports’. Although he has a packed overseas schedule as a singer, he always works hard to complete his missions for the show and is reaping in great success as an emcee. He has won over his viewers with his hard work and effort.
Max Changmin himself is very happy that he was able to join the ‘Our Neighborhood’s Master’ team. During an interview with Newsen, Max Changmin said, “My life has become more enjoyable. I actually found it hard to approach others first and I used to be quite an introvert, but I’ve become more of an extrovert thanks to this show. Exercising and participating in matches together has helped form a natural camaraderie with the others, and I find it easier to keep an eye on those around me.”
Anyone who watches the show can see just how much Max Changmin loves his fellow teammates, and how hard he works for every match and practice session. One of his bowling matches in early July had viewers reaching out for the singer when he cried over an unfortunate loss. Though it was not aired, Max Changmin was crying so hard that he was unable to say his closing comments. The staff came to the decision to cut that scene from the episode.
Regarding this, Max Changmin confessed, “I had become close friends with the other guys like Kang Ho Dong, Lee Soo Geun, Lee Byung Jin, Alex and Jo Dal Hwan and I felt even more disappointed at the loss because I had worked so hard to prepare for the match. I had practiced so hard, giving up my breaks in between our concerts in Japan, so I felt even more upset that I lost. I really wanted to end the match on a high… I felt sorry to the others and I felt disappointed at myself. There were so many emotions running through me.”
According to Max Changmin’s close acquaintances, he is the kind of person who always works hard at what he does. Not even the smallest things pass by him unattended to. Because of this, he has felt an immense sense of responsibility about appearing on the show. Staff members who saw the ripped skin on his hands from bowling too much even said, “Your primary job is being a singer. Focus on that. Take care of yourself so that you can focus on your concerts as well.”
However, Max Changmin refused to give up his Japanese concerts or his bowling matches. He had always laid low during his breaks, but since beginning the show, he began going to bowling alleys whenever he had a moment to spare and kept practicing as much as he could. Max Changmin said, “Practicing and getting used to the sports made me feel more at ease with myself. I think that’s why the tears came after I lost. I think those tears were proof that I’ve gotten more comfortable with the show.”
The singer has gained so much through the show. Not only has he become close friends with people such as Lee Soo Geun, Jo Dal Hwan and Kang Ho Dong, and has currently become closer with stars such as John Park and 2PM’s Chansung. He has been meeting with Chansung for dinner often and they have finally begun to feel more comfortable around each other for the first time in years.
Max Changmin smiled and said, “The kid who used to stay at home and sit around every day is now sweating it out and moving around. It’s helped a lot with my personality. In the past, I used to feel very bitter and depressed. But participating in sports activities through the show has helped me release my stress faster and it’s making me much happier. I’m grateful to myself for taking on this challenge. I’ve found a new sense of vitality in my life.”

The viewers’ request page of SBS’ ‘Inkigayo’ has been flooded with fans asking for JYJ’s Junsu to appear on the show. This has been happening for all three major music programs, including KBS’ ‘Music Bank’ and MBC’s ‘Show! Music Core’.
One viewer stated, “Till when will you tread on glass around large entertainment agencies and concede to their every whim,” and “Viewers are bored with the same celebrities always appearing on the show, and people don’t watch the show anymore because they’re bored.”
They continued to add, “The FTC have made their verdict, and now is the time to give Junsu an chance,” and “We want to see Junsu, the frontrunner of K-pop, on a broadcasted stage in Korea.”
JYJ left TVXQ in 2009 and since then, have been unable to appear on broadcasted music programs due to external pressure. The FTC recently found SM Entertainment and the Korean Federation of Pop Culture and Arts Industries guilty of interfering with JYJ’s activities. With the FTC’s verdict made on the 24th, JYJ’s fans began expecting to see JYJ on stage in the near future.
However, the staff of the show have stayed silent, regardless of the viewers’ requests. Although it has become the hottest issue of the week in K-pop, not a single staff member of any broadcasted music program has expressed his or her opinion on the matter through official posts, SNS accounts or news articles.
In order to ‘strengthen communication with viewers’, all three major broadcasted music programs
have incorporated SNS points, and text message votes into their ranking systems, but they have stayed silent when it comes to requests made by the viewers themselves. Broadcasting companies use viewers when they need to, but do not reflect their requests or opinions at all.
Another viewer stated, “Legally, all restrictions against JYJ have disappeared,” and “We hope that the media remembers that their most important role is to promote fairness.” It is time for the staff of music programs to express their official stance to gain the trust of their viewers.

SM “The FTC’s verdict is unfortunate” VS JYJ “We saw a ray of hope”
The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) laid down a prohibitive order on SM Entertainment and the Korean Federation of Pop Culture and the Arts (KFPCAI) on the 24th. This order prohibited the two parties from interfering with the broadcasted and musical activities of idol group JYJ (Kim Junsu, Park Yoochun, Kim Jaejoong).
In July of 2009, JYJ filed an exclusive contract nullification injunction against SM as members of the idol group TVXQ, claiming that the exclusive contract signed between the two parties was unlawful. Since then, SM and JYJ had been locked in a legal dispute over the validity of their exclusive contract.
Regarding this, the FTC stated, “Considering the leverage that SM Entertainment has as one of the three biggest entertainment agencies in Korea, as well as the specific nature of the KFPCAI as an organization in the entertainment industry, the official notice that was released placed a considerable amount of pressure on the recipients,” and “This incident is significant as it has prohibited a large-scale entertainment agency from using its influence and working with a business organization to prohibit the activities of celebrities currently locked in a legal dispute with the agency.”
The FTC also ordered the KFPCAI to, “notify the 12 business associations in the organization, as well as the 26 licensees who received the official notice, of the corrective measures that have taken place.”
Regarding this order, the FTC explained why they had not made SM pay a fee as they stated, “We do not believe that SM benefitted economically from this event, and we believe that a prohibitive order is enough as a warning for other entertainment agencies as well.”
The most important question surrounding the FTC’s order is whether JYJ will be able to appear on broadcasted shows in the future. As it has now been accepted by the FTC that JYJ have been faced with limitations in their activities, many are wondering if JYJ will finally be able to let their activities take flight.
Regarding this, CEO Baek Chang Joo of C-JeS Entertainment stated, “Although JYJ’s legal dispute with their former agency was concluded in April, JYJ still suffered from unlawful external pressure. Including the unilateral notification they received from their album distribution company recently, it is an undeniable fact that JYJ have unlawfully been restricted from appearing on music programs, even when they release albums.” He also added, “But if policies and institutions continue to be the foundation of change, as they were today, we believe that JYJ will be able to perform on a fair stage in the future.”
JYJ stated, “We hope that the FTC’s verdict will allow us to freely pursue activities in the entertainment industry and to stand on a fair stage in front of the public. Although a long and dark tunnel still lies ahead of us, we saw a strand of light in the far distance flash by our eyes. We will continue to walk towards that light, and we will always do our best to repay everyone with great performances and activities.”
However, SM released an official statement that read, “It is unfortunate that such a verdict was made, although there was no evidence to prove that such interference had taken place,” and “SM is currently reviewing the option of pursuing legal action against this latest decision.”
With such differing stances coming from both sides, there are may opinions surrounding this issue that exist in the industry. The FTC’s order is very meaningful as a symbol, but the opinion is split on whether it will actually translate into change in reality.
One representative in the industry saw the verdict in a positive light as he stated, “The verdict made by the FTC is a symbolic precedent against large-scale, influential entertainment agencies. The entertainment industry is changing from a food chain into an environment that everyone can be a part of.”
On the other hand, another representative believed that the order would not be able to make any lasting change as he stated, “Though the FTC have made their verdict, we still can’t say whether JYJ will be able to appear on variety shows or music programs. The industry has agreed that the issue is whether the broadcasting companies will take the necessary big step.”
One representative of the broadcasting industry gave a more skeptical opinion as he stated, “I’m doubtful that the FTC’s verdict will have a positive effect on JYJ’s broadcasted activities.”
He also added, “Though the FTC has sided with JYJ, what’s important is how SM accepts their verdict. If JYJ are able to freely pursue activities in the industry after the verdict, wouldn’t that basically mean that SM and the KFPCAI admits to interfering with JYJ’s activities? I don’t think it’s a simple problem.”
A representative who works in management at an agency emphasized, “People are curious to see how SM will react as a large-scale entertainment agency. And it’s true that the FTC’s verdict has hurt SM’s image to an extent. But if JYJ were now able to freely pursue activities as singers, SM would no longer be associated with the term ‘Tyranny of super powers’. As the frontrunner of K-pop, SM must make a wise decision.”

The reason why everyone should see Kim Junsu in ‘Elisabeth’
‘Elisabeth’, the large-scale musical that took the industry by storm last year, has returned. Like last year, Kim Junsu’s performances, which seat a total of 20,000 people, were sold out in five minutes.
Looking at the overall critiques by the public and media, Kim Junsu’s ticket power is astounding. But this time around, the expectation for ‘Elisabeth’ is different from that of last year, because this time around, many people are saying “‘Death’ by Kim Junsu, ‘Death’ for Kim Junsu.”
First of all, last year’s Tod role was given to three actors, Ryu Jung Hwan, Song Chang Ui and Kim Junsu. The first two actors are veterans who each have at least 10 years of experience in the industry. Because of this, Kim Junsu was constantly compared to them for their ease and presence on stage.
On the other hand, 2013′s ‘Death’ role was given to Kim Junsu, and two other young actors. Park Hyo Shin, who appeared in ‘Rock Hamlet’ in 2000 but is better known as a singer than a musical actor, and Jeon Dong Seok, who hit the musical scene through the 2009 production ‘Notre Dame de Paris’.
Not only does Kim Junsu have the merit of having been in the first round of ‘Elisabeth’ performances, but he has also created a strong foundation for himself in the past three years through ‘Elisabeth’, ‘Tears of Heaven’ and ‘Mozart!’.
During the press call of ‘Elisabeth’ that was held on the 25th at the Seoul Arts Center’s Opera House, composer Sylvester Levay showed his faith in the singer as he said, “I personally think of him as a close friend and I’m honored that Kim Junsu will be working with me for another production since ‘Mozart!’. His presence on stage is truly spectacular.”
Kim Junsu’s role of ‘Death’ is a fantasy character that draws off the fact that the real-life empress Elisabeth used to write countless poems about death. He is an important character who makes the life of ‘Elisabeth’ more dramatic and tragic.
‘Death’ falls in love with ‘Elisabeth’ when she falls from a tightrope at a young age. He is a mystical character whose gender can’t be properly defined. Though he approaches Elisabeth as a man, he approaches her son Rudolph as a woman. He follows her wherever she goes throughout her life, and tries to seduce her into taking the last dance with him because he is the only one who can give her true freedom.
The image of ‘Death’, who is both strong and soft, is similar to Hyde of ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ or the phantom of ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ when he appears on a lift. In the musical, he seduces both Elisabeth and her son Rudolph, but also has to draw the audience in and entrance them.
‘Death’ is accompanied by six ‘Angels of Death’, who fill the stage with sophisticated choreography. The ‘Last Dance’ number showcased Kim Junsu’s superior dance skills that he honed as a member of idol group JYJ.
During the press call, Kim Junsu performed ‘The Shadows Grow Longer’ and captivated everyone with a more dignified and charismatic stage presence than last year. During the press conference that followed, he impressed the reporters as he sat and paid attention to what the other actors were saying. It seems as though we must let go of some of the prejudices and negative feelings we have for singer-turned-musical-actors when it comes to Kim Junsu. One critic even justifiably stated, ‘Kim Junsu’s aura grows longer.’
Kim Junsu is currently facing restrictions on his activities as a singer due to a dispute with his former agency. During the press conference, Kim Junsu stated, “My longing for the stage is on the verge of desperation. I’m only able to show my energy through concerts or in musicals. As desperate as I am, I’m going to put all my power and energy into each and every scene.” The instincts he picked up while on stage, as well as the passion he has for what he does, will ensure that Kim Junsu’s charisma will have increased tenfold this time around.
One more thing, EMK plans to open the musicals ‘Marie Antoinette’ and ‘Dance of the Vampire’ next year and the year after, and it looks as though he may be in the running to appear in one of these shows.
Meanwhile, the big and small changes made to this year’s ‘Elisabeth’ is drawing the attention of many. The biggest change is that a new song called ‘The Dance of Love and Death’ has been added to the musical. As a song that was showcased during the Japanese performances of the musical, it will greet Korean audiences this year. Small details have been fixed to bring a new ‘Elisabeth’ to the music industry.
‘Elisabeth’ opens on the 26th of July and features Ok Joo Hyun and Kim So Hyun as the leading role of Elisabeth. They will be joined by Lee Ji Hoon, Park Eun Tae, Yoon Young Seok, Min Young Ki, Lee Jung Hwa, Kim Isak and Noh Ji Hoon.
