[TRANS] 131011 The End Of 2013 To Feature Three New Musicals, ‘Fans Are Already Excited’

threenewmusicals

The end-of-the-year season is approaching the musical industry. Though it’s only mid-October, musical fans are already excited. Especially consdiering the fact that some concerts already have begun selling tickets, people are busy looking for great musicals to watch and nabbing the best seats in the house.

The hottest musicals that are set to make their debut this year are ‘Wicked’ (Korean), ‘December: The Song That Hasn’t Ended’ and ‘Ghost’. All three will be making their debut in the Korean industry for the first time. Considering the fact that it’s difficult to gauge how good a musical is if it’s never been shown before, it’s natural for musical lovers to be skeptical about these productions. Because of this, ‘Wicked’ is obviously the favorite of the list with a 96% ticket reservation rate (Interpark), attracting 200,000 people in the shortest time ever. Musical columnist Jung Da Hoon stated, “It’s not easy to guess the success level of a debuting musical,” and “Considering the fact that ‘Wicked’ has a storyline and music that has already been recognized, many are excited for it.”

‘Ghost’, which comes all the way from the 5-trillion Won industry of the UK’s West End, stands out as having a well-built storyline, which is familiar as the movie the musical is based on was released in Korea in 1990. The original movie’s popularity and familiarity are the greatest weapon of ‘Ghost’.

‘December’ is in the most unfavorable position as it has never been shown before. However, it has more than enough up its sleeve to come out on top. Bringing in Kim Junsu, who has the biggest ‘ticket power’ in the industry, and teaming him up with Kim Kwang Seok’s music. The smart choices made by NEW, the movie production company making its debut in the musical industry with the upcoming production, have proven that ‘December’ is a force to be reckoned with. Many representatives in the industry have voiced their opinion that in terms of competitiveness of cast members, ‘December’ comes out on top though ‘Wicked’ has Ok Joo Hyun and ‘Ghost’ has Joo Won. Some are saying that having Kim Junsu on the cast list is enough to guarantee success. Musical columnist Park Jung Hwan stated, “Kim Junsu, who has the greatest ticket power in the musical industry, and Kim Kwang Seok’s music have teamed up,” and “The synergy those two will create is astronomical.”

[TRANS] 131001 U-Know Yunho To Appear In SBS’ ‘Man From The Stars’ And Work With Jeon Ji Hyun And Kim Soo Hyun?

yunhomanfromthestarsU-Know Yunho, an actor and a member of TVXQ, may be ready to return to the drama industry.

U-Know Yunho is currently in discussions to appear in SBS’ new Wednesday-Thursday miniseries ‘Man From the Stars’. A drama representative stated, “The discussions with U-Know Yunho’s representatives are headed in a positive direction. Though his appearance isn’t confirmed, it is highly likely.”

The part that U-Know Yunho is gearing up to play is Lee Hwi Kyung, the son of a chaebol. Though he is the fiancee of Chunsong (Jeon Ji Hyun), he feels helpless because he doesn’t know what to do about Chunsong’s indifference towards him. He will compete against Do Min Joon (Kim Soo Hyun) for Chunsong’s affection.

If U-Know Yunho’s appearance is confirmed, ‘Man From the Stars’ will feature the greatest lineup to grace the drama industry. The drama representative stated, “Kim Soo Hyun and Jeon Ji Hyun have already signed on to the drama, and if U-Know Yunho, the Hallyu Wave’s most representative star, joins them, this drama will become a true Hallyu drama that will be popular both domestically and internationally.”

Since ending his role in the SBS drama ‘Queen of Ambition’ early this year, U-Know Yunho has been focusing on his activities as a singer. U-Know Yunho took on the role of a character who would die for a woman in ‘Queen of Ambition’ and was praised for his improved acting skills.

‘Man From the Stars’ will be written by Park Ji Eun, who created the nationally loved drama ‘You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly’ and will depict the love of an actress and a talented and handsome alien who has been alive for 400 years.

[Info] 130927 Hello Asia! Special Feature: XIA Press Conference – SBS PopAsia Studios

juneaustraliaK-Pop star Xia arrived in Sydney yesterday ahead of his one off concert at Big Top Luna Park. A press conference was held at SBS PopAsia’s television studios ahead of the concert. Hello Asia editor Johnny Au and contributor Erin Smith was on hand to provide coverage. Photos by Johnny Au & Erin Smith. Translation provided by Lynn Ko.

Can you give us a greeting and your impressions of Sydney?

Hi everyone! My name is Xia. I actually visited Sydney back in 2010 with members of JYJ. Sydney is such a beautiful city. As soon as you land at the airport you can tell it’s a beautiful city. I’m very excited to be in Sydney again and it feels a bit different to be here for my concert this time but it’s wonderful.

While you are having your concert overseas and Korea, is there any difference? (e.g. concert, response from fans)

Clearly the most obvious difference is the language. Actually I don’t really feel much of a difference. As JYJ fans alike we start to become one. As a whole there isn’t much difference.

juneaustralia1

Also you are a singer song writer, what inspires you to write songs and where does your ideas come from? (e.g. Incredible)

I have no roles in terms of writing songs or coming up with music. Every song is very different but dance songs like Tarantallegra we actually came up with the beats first then the lyrics but with ballad songs like Fallen Leaves we came up with the lyrics first then the dance moves. So every song is different.

Could you tell us something incredible about yourself that we might not know?

Incredible? I really hope the concert will be an incredible time for my fans and myself. It’s something that cannot be achieved by myself so it has to come from my fans as well. It’s like a fusion of the two energies. So I’m very looking forward to the concert tomorrow and I do hope it’s going to be something incredible.

juneaustralia2

We believe you were first here in 2010 on a mini vacation. Do you have a favourite place in Sydney?

My favourite place in Sydney? Firstly ever since I was a child I have seen pictures of the Sydney Opera House in textbooks, TV and all kinds of media. You name it I’ve seen it! So when I saw the Opera House I thought it was grander than I have imagined. So the Opera House was great, as well as the Harbour Bridge of course. I actually completed the Harbour Bridge climb so that was great. I also really enjoyed your kangaroo steak and crocodile pizza. We were here for a brief amount of time but tried to experience as much of Australia as possible.

How do you feel about performing in the musical Elizabeth, chosen to act the leading role of ‘Death’ for the second time, and what musical do you want to perform in the future?

When I first performed in the musical Elizabeth the fact that my character was ‘Death’ overwhelmed me. I tried hard to think up of how to portray my character. It was a bit of a struggle to come up with something that was against my nature. But I really enjoyed performing the role. For the second time around I wanted to portray ‘Death’ differently. I wanted to colour him differently. It was an incredible experience to do that. In fact I have just announced that I will be performing in another musical this December. Funnily enough the musical is also called The December.

Your latest album Incredible had various types of genres, which genre was the most fun to do? Do you have a favourite song on the album?

The most fun I had? I must say it’s the song Incredible that I enjoyed the most. It an upbeat dance song that was targeted for the Korean summer. And summer makes everyone happy as you all know! I also know its summer in Australia soon so I hope you guys feel the same way I had when I was making the song as well. I actually cannot pick one favourite song on the album as I’ve put in my effort to all songs so it’s hard to choose one favourite song.

juneaustralia3

What can fans expect from your first Sydney concert?

I’ve been doing my world tour since last year and now I’m performing in Sydney so that means I have performed on every continent except for Africa which I am very grateful about. In this concert I want the audience to feel the excitement and joy I feel when I’m performing for them. So I hope everyone has a great time!

What are the main differences between performing in a musical and promoting albums and singles?

When I promote my albums and singles as a solo artist it’s all about me. But when I perform in a musical it’s a very different feeling. It’s the same excitement but the feeling I get at the end of each is very different. All in all there is a difference when I’m by myself or with other people.

juneaustralia4

Questions from Erin Smith of The AU Review

You took on the name Xia as a desire to be recognized as a star throughout Asia. Now that you have achieved that goal are there bigger desires?

(Laughs) I feel a bit embarrassed! When I first took on the name Xia it actually originated from the word Asia. But forget about being a star and all. I just want to be out there for every one of my fans around the world. That is all I want. I want to perform for every fan around the world. Beyond Asia.

What’s your message to your Australian fans and your plans for the rest of 2013?

I’m very much looking forward to the concert tomorrow. I hope it’s going to be a night I will be enjoying with my fans, breathing in the air with my fans. Performing in Australia is not something I just look forward to by myself. I really hope one day I can come back with my group JYJ. Not sure when that is going to happen but it’s something JYJ is looking forward to. As for the rest of 2013 as I mentioned earlier I have my musical coming up and we also have the Asian Games theme song. It’s quite full on so till the end of the year we have lots of things coming up.

[News] 130903 JYJ to Visit The Philippines in November

jyjasiangamesorgaizingcommitteeJYJ members Junsu, Jaejoong and Yoochun with Asian Games Organizing Committee President Kim Young-soo (Photo courtesy of 2014 Asian Incheon Games website)

K-pop boy band JYJ will visit the Philippines in November as honorary ambassador to promote the 17th Asian Games that will be held in Incheon, South Korea, next year.

The popular group is scheduled to do a roadshow to promote the Games in four countries starting this month.

According to C-JeS Entertainment, the band’s agency, JYJ will attend a video conference interview for Singapore on Sept. 26followed by media and cultural events in Vietnam and Guangzhou, China, on Oct. 24 and Nov. 21, respectively.

JYJ is scheduled to go to an Asian Games media event in Boracay in Aklan in southern Philippines at the end of November.

The band was appointed as honorary ambassador of the Incheon Asian Games in February.

However, certain parties are preventing JYJ from promoting Asian Games in their own country.

Despite that the band is the honorary ambassador of the Games, JYJ was excluded from attending the Incheon Korean Music Wave 2013 concert held last Sept. 1 at the Incheon Munhak World Cup Stadium.

About 40,000 fans went to the concert which was participated in by 20 K-pop groups including Girls’ Generation, Super Junior, KARA, FT Island, EXO, miss A, BEAST and 2AM.

According to the 2014 Incheon Asian Games website, the concert “was part of a series of events to mark the one year remaining until the opening of the Games on September 19, 2014.”

C-JeS said JYJ was not included in the concert despite that it raised a formal objection to the organizing committee.

“Of course, we have raised a formal objection to the organizing committee because, from a common sense point of view, it is unacceptable for JYJ, honorary ambassadors of the IAG, not to attend the event which has to do with promoting the IAG,” C-JeS said, according to a translation by fansite Jaetaku on WordPress.com.

The agency said the Games organizing committee sided with it and requested people in charge of the concert including TV station MBC, the host TV station of the event, to include JYJ.

The organizing committee was informed by the Incheon Development and Tourism Corporation (IDTC) that it was impossible to have JYJ at the event.

According to C-JeS, the committee’s request was not for JYJ to perform at the concert but only to introduce the Incheon Asian Games and announce their upcoming overseas promotional activities.

MBC and IDTC turned down the committee’s request, C-JeS said.

JYJ has been unable to perform on TV music and entertainment programs in South Korea since 2010 stemming from a legal dispute between the boy band and SM Entertainment.

Last November, JYJ and SM Entertainment settled their legal problem.

Last July, Korea’s Fair Trade Commission issued an order against entertainment and media organizations in Korea that have obstructed JYJ’s TV appearances.

Despite the order and the lawsuit settlement, JYJ is still being prevented from appearing on TV.

C-JeS said despite the roadblocks, JYJ is committed to spreading Korean culture and raising awareness about the Asian Incheon Games, which will be held from September to October 2014 in South Korea.

C-JeS thanked the Games organizing committee and the Mayor of Incheon for acknowledging the importance of JYJ as honorary ambassadors of the Asian Games.

“JYJ are going to do their best to spread the excellence of the Korean culture and to raise the awareness of the IAG 2014 as its honorary ambassadors by making a tour of several Asian countries,” the agency said.
