[TRANS] 130502 TVXQ Hit The Jackpot Of 100 billion Won In Japan… K-Pop Takes On The Yen

Inside Story – The Economics of Idol Stars’ Overseas Concerts

– 850,000 audience members… The biggest concerts ever
– Girls’ Generation and SHINee are preparing their world tours
– SM states, “The number of audience members will increase by 50%”
-YG’s G-Dragon is expected to attract 550,000 audience members

TVXQ, the ‘oldest brother’ of Korean idol groups, have yet again proved their explosive popularity in China and Japan. Their Beijing concert in late-March had 10,000 Chinese fans holding light sticks and cheering the singers on. Their Five Dome Tour, which began late last month at the Saitama Super Arena, is expected to attract 850,000 audience members across 18 concerts till mid-August. This means that TVXQ have now set the record of the most number of audience members for a tour in one country. They will be the first non-Japanese singers to be holding a concert at Nissan Stadium, which seats 75,000 people.

The price of tickets for this tour is approximately 120,000 Won per ticket. Considering the fact that 850,000 people will be attending the tour, it can be said that TVXQ have earned 102 billion Won in ticket sales alone. SM Entertainment also has Girls’ Generation and SHINee lined up for world tours starting June, and Super Junior recently visited South America for their own tour.

TVXQ’s world tour last year attracted 570,000 fans. SM Entertainment was able to attract a total of 1.4 million overseas fans to its tours with a joint-concert (300,000) that included Super Junior (280,000), SHINee (250,000), and Girls’ Generation. A representative of SM stated, “The number of audience members we’re attracting this year already rivals the total number last year,” and “If we take into consideration the number of concerts we will have by the end of the year, we can estimate that the number of audience members will increase by 50%.”

K-pop singers have become more active in holding overseas concerts. They are planning to utilize their global popularity to earn a profit in a wide range of countries. YG Entertainment is currently in the process of scheduling Psy’s overseas concert tour and will be revealing the dates once they are done discussing the details with their American partners. A representative of YG stated, “As this is Psy’s first world tour, we expect it to receive global attention.”

YG’s G-Dragon from Big Bang is expected to attract a total of 550,000 fans through 25 performances in 13 cities in 8 countries. He will be the first solo singer to hold a 4 Dome Tour. Big Bang’s Daesung brought in 100,000 fans in 25 performances in 19 Japanese countries. Big Bang also attracted 800,000 fans in 12 cities for their world tour. JYP’s 2PM, DSP’s KARA and FNC’s CN BLUE have either begun or are planning to kick off overseas tours as well.

The industry expects to see a 20% increase in profits from overseas K-pop concerts from last year. Though the number of concerts has increased from last year, the weakening of the Yen has hit hard with Japan being K-pop’s biggest overseas market.

Overseas concerts bring in more profit than album sales and it’s said that half of total K-pop sales (235 million dollars) comes from concerts. The proportion of profit in Japan of K-pop concerts and album sales is 6 to 4. In other countries, concert sales contributes to the majority of overall profits. In large-scale concerts, a total of 2 billion Won can be earned from each concert from sales of goods such as towels, clothing and photobooks.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has decided to create a large-scale concert venue in Korea for overseas fans. Goyang-si Ilsan’s Hallyu World is contracted to build a concert venue by 2016 that will hold 150,000 people.

130331 Have a Happy Easter by Momma Cha

Easter is an exciting time for me. There is so much activity to celebrate the Cross of Christ which brings me to the understanding of who I am in Him. It is His Spirit in me that makes me love everyone around me, and even those far away. As we celebrate Easter of 2013, it is with gratitude that winter is starting to release its grip on the land. The robins are here, leaner than before, but they will soon fatten up on the earthworms. There is still an abundance of snow that is slowly melting here on the farm. This creates deep mud, and I go out each day with a prayer that there is enough firm earth to safely make it to my car. There has been so much moisture that the asphalt driveway sways slightly beneath my feet. I need the beautiful green grass to energize me; the birdsong to lighten my heart, and the color and beauty of the crocuses and daffodils to herald that Spring is finally here. Spring and Easter are both my motivators to begin the renewal process. The garden beckons me with a longing to feel the dirt between my toes–an old habit from childhood and part of the Joy of Spring.

Easter is also filled with music–my major motivating force. It is the music  [ I embrace many genres] that gives me heart-ease, strength, and a bright horizon to share with others. Singing comes naturally, I have been singing and writing music since childhood. Music is as breath to me. My world begins to shrink without music, and depression tries to sink into my soul. I do not fully understand the draw of the music that JYJ and TVXQ bring to us, it is simply there. I relax to it; I enjoy the lyrics, the rhythm, and the beat, and I especially enjoy getting to know the people behind the music. As a youngster growing up, I simply embraced the song. Now I have learned to embrace the song and the songster.

To those who celebrate Easter, I am with you. To those who do not, I am still with you. Love encompasses all and makes this world a better place.

Have A Wonderful Easter

[TRANS] 130316 Kangta Says, “My Heart Goes Out To TVXQ As They Walk Down A Path Similar To HOT’s”

Kangta showed his strong affection for TVXQ, who are his juniors and label-mates.

Kangta appeared on YTN’s ‘News12 – Issue & People’ that aired on the 15th and said, “Like HOT, only two of the original five members of TVXQ stayed in the company.”

He also stated, “TVXQ are going through the same things that I once went through. They’re walking down a path similar to the one I walked down once. When I think about the fact that they’re probably suffering from the same worries and troubles that I went through, my heart goes out to them and I feel a lot of affection for them.”

Kangta added, “The advice that I can give to the members of TVXQ is, ‘Nothing can be helped about the fact that things change as time passes.’ You need to recognize that a celebrity’s position and popularity will change, and I hope that they strengthen their internal stability by preparing skills and talents for other things they could do in the future.”

He revealed, “That’s how you can survive when your popularity isn’t as great as it was before. I don’t have much to say to them now because they’re doing so well. But I’d like them to be prepared to beat out their loneliness with internal stability in the future.”

[Trans] 130226 Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun And Kim Junsu Cry During Their ‘THE JYJ’ Interview… ‘Why?

[Trans] 130226 Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun And Kim Junsu Cry During Their ‘THE JYJ’ Interview… ‘Why?

It has been found that JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun and Kim Junsu shed tears during their ‘THE JYJ’ interview.

The first edition of ‘THE JYJ’ released by JYJ’s agency C-JeS Entertainment contains honest interviews from the members that took place over 25 hours in three sessions. During the interview, the members shed tears as they talked about what happened in 2009.

A representative of the agency stated to eNEWS that, “During the interview, the members opened up about everything they had kept in their hearts for a long time. During the interview, we found out things about the members that we’d never known before,” and “All three members shed tears when they talked about what happened in 2009, and it broke our hearts to see them cry. Both the members and the staff ended up in tears.”

In one of the interviews in the magazine, the members talked about crying at their 2010 Tokyo Dome concert [T/N: The original Korean article states ‘2010 도쿄돔 콘서트’ but judging from the content of JYJ’s comments, we presume they actually meant the 2009 concert, when all five members were still together. It may be a simple typo or it may not be, but we put this note in for clarification’s sake.] as they said, “We were so sorry to our fans. We were even more sorry that we couldn’t tell them that the five of us couldn’t be together anymore. When we were walking towards our fans, the tears wouldn’t stop flowing from our eyes. We still can’t forget that moment.”

The three members also talked about their affection for each other as they said, “Because we’re colleagues, because we’re not alone, we’re not scared,” and “Never! Not once! have we regretted this.”

The first edition of ‘THE JYJ’ contains honest interviews from the members that took place over 25 hours, as well as their memories of the past 1000 days as members of JYJ. A DVD containing 40 minutes of unreleased footage is also included in the magazine. ‘THE JYJ’ will be released every six months and will be catered to JYJ’s fans.

Meanwhile, JYJ have been active as ‘Korea’s representative group’ through various state events and honorary ambassador jobs, including performing at the 18th Presidential Inauguration ceremony.

They ended their lawsuit with SM Entertainment last November in three years and four months, and won their lawsuit against Japan’s AVEX on the 18th of January. As JYJ are now free to pursue activities in Japan, they are planning to greet fans in Japan for the first time in four years in Tokyo Dome in April.

[Trans] 130124 JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong, “There Exists An Unjust World That People Can’t See”

[Trans] 130124 JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong, “There Exists An Unjust World That People Can’t See”

– His lawsuit comes to an end in 3 years… His first solo album in 10 years

JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong (27), who we met at the Seoul Plaza Hotel on the 21st, seemed to be cautious of his words. When we asked him how he felt about his recently ended lawsuit, he seemed to shake a bit before he spoke up. He said, “I’m really happy,” and “You probably don’t know how big my smile was when I heard the news.”

The lawsuit of JYJ (Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun, Kim Junsu), who broke away from TVXQ in 2009, against SM Entertainment ended in November last year with a settlement. The group also won their exclusive contract invalidity and indemnification for damages lawsuit against Japan’s biggest music agency AVEX on the 18th. AVEX signed a contract with JYJ in February, 2010 to help them with their Japanese activities, but then announced that they would be halting all of their activities in September. The Tokyo District Courts gave the verdict, “Avex can no longer claim that they are the sole management agency of JYJ.” AVEX must pay 7.8 billion Won (660 million Yen) to JYJ for the indemnification for damages charges.

“In our point of view, this was something we knew would happen, but we were frustrated because it was taking so long to resolve. The three of us told each other ‘It’s been rough, but we got through it.’”

But there’s a disappointing note to all of this. Kim Jaejoong said, “Unjust things. They’re not limited to the laws and contracts,” and “There’s an unjust order that people can’t see, there exists a world where such ridiculous things are accepted.”

As soon as their lawsuit began, it became more difficult for JYJ to appear on TV. He stated, “Whenever PDs or screenwriters say, ‘Why don’t you appear on TV?’ I say to them, ‘Muster the courage to be the first to call us in.’”

The situation isn’t that different in Japan. When they borrowed a concert venue, they would be blocked in various ways. He said, “Most of all, I really want to hold a concert in Japan as soon as possible.”

Though JYJ have been faced with so many obstacles, they have collected a string of achievements. Kim Junsu and Park Yoochun have been shining in the musical and drama industries respectively. Kim Jaejoong, who took on the role of the stage director for JYJ’s world tour, released his solo album on the 17th and has stepped up on his individual activities. He has always filled JYJ’s albums with emotional compositions, and he has now put his all into his own solo album.

The theme of the album is ‘rock’. Of the five tracks in the album, ‘MINE’ and ‘One Kiss’ were created through a collaboration with rocker Kim Bada, who took on the melody while Kim Jaejoong took on the lyrics. Kim Bada also helped direct the vocals and chorus of the songs.

Kim Jaejoong said, “I know that it’s dangerous for a singer with roots in an idol group to sing rock songs. Kim Bada was also concerned about this,” and “Regardless of this, I really wanted to work with great rock musicians, and I wanted to create an intense, rock-inspired performance.”

He has always introduced a rock element to JYJ’s world tours, creating songs with rebellious messages. Regarding his title song ‘MINE’, he explained, “It’s a story about my small domain, and it’s a song that warns others not to take even that freedom away from me.” He added, “I was worried that underground artistes would reject my work and say, ‘A kid who doesn’t know the first thing about rock is singing rock’. But there were a lot of people who gave me good reviews,” and “I think it’s because I mixed K-pop with rock, instead of fully going the traditional rock route, or because of Kim Bada.” The other two songs ‘Comfort for Myself’ and ‘All Alone’, sincere and sophisticated songs, were composed by Kim Jaejoong.

Kim Jaejoong made his debut as a member of TVXQ in 2004 and it has been 10 years since his debut. He said, “I couldn’t fall asleep yesterday (20th) so I listened to all the songs I’ve sung till now, and I found that there are 120~130 songs,” and “I looked back on the past 10 years by listening to all the songs, and I found that the good memories came to mind before the bad ones.” He also smiled and said, “This is my first solo album since I made my debut 10 years ago, and it makes me happy to feel like I’ve become a rookie all over again.” Kim Jaejoong will be focusing on his individual activities in the first half of the year and will resume group activities with the rest of JYJ in the second half of the year.

[Interview] 130124 JYJ′s Kim Jae Joong is Sad About JYJ′s Inability to Appear on TV

Although its legal proceedings with SM Entertainment have come to a conclusion, JYJ is still unable to appear on TV as singers.

As such, JYJ member Kim Jae Joong recently came to voice his sorrow at being unable to perform on TV.

In a recent interview with enews, Kim Jae Joong said, “It′s not just our problem, but we′re really sorry.”

Kim Jae Joong, Park Yoo Chun and Kim Junsu, who were members of TVXQ (DBSK) at the time, demanded their contract with SM Entertainment be cancelled, filing a lawsuit against the agency in 2009. Their opinion was that their 13-year contract with SM was too long, and that the division of profits were set at the agency′s advantage.

As the court acknowledged that it “approves individual promotions,” the members have continued to promote through dramas, albums and concert tours inside and outside Korea. The group, however, hasn′t been able to appear on music or variety shows. The three main channels defended their avoidance of the group with the assertion that its appearance could have an affect on the court decisions.

The long battle came to an end in December with an agreement between SM and JYJ, but the main channels are still treading carefully around the issue of the group′s televised appearances.

Kim Jae Joong said about the lack of televised promotions, “People around me tell me ′you′re doing great even without television′ or ask ′aren′t you doing okay without it?′ but that′s how it looks when you see things from JYJ′s point of view. Celebrities need to approach their fans through the media, but for us, it′s the fans who have been seeking us and our music.”

He added, “Elementary school students these days don′t know us. Though they do know us, they know us as actors, so that′s saddening. We′ve spent almost four years this way, and we want to repay our fans who have been coming in to visit us.”

In the meantime, Kim Jae Joong released his first solo mini album Mine on January 17. The title song has been received as a revival of traditional rock.
