Translation 111020 KBS’ Change of Words That Tricked JYJ (Lee Seung Rok’s Compass

Another week has gone by with JYJ’s appearance on KBS 2TV’s ‘Music Bank’ falling through.

According to the Korea Communications Commission, KBS has stated that they have kept their former stance regarding JYJ’s appearance on ‘Music Bank’ that, “Appearing on broadcasted programs may affect the outcome of celebrities’ lawsuits, and we will continue to review the possibility of JYJ’s appearance on the show as we keep an eye on the situation,” and also stated, “We have not changed our stance that as the group is currently involved in many lawsuits regarding the results of their injunction, the validity of their exclusive contract and compensation, we will continue to postpone their appearance and keep an eye on the situation till the final verdict is made, regardless of the outcome of their injunction lawsuit.

They then added, “Though the situation keeps changing with the content of their injunction and release of their album, there is still a lawsuit going on between SM and JYJ, and as the courts have not made their verdict on the issue, the staff of ‘Music Bank’ have not changed their stance on the issue.”

But in May of this year, KBS released an official statement that is slightly different from the one they produced recently. At the time, KBS stated, “According to the staff’s criteria that an appearance is decided upon only after the release of an album, JYJ are not qualified to appear on ‘Music Bank’ as they have not released an album since the courts made a verdict on the 17th of February,” and “The selection of appearances lies solely in the staff’s decision and they will further discuss the possibility of JYJ appearing on the show after JYJ have released an album.”

As JYJ have been unable to appear on a single music program since they split from TVXQ, JYJ and their fans found hope in the official statement of ‘Music Bank’. And when JYJ released their first Korean album ‘In Heaven’ in September, many focused their attention on whether JYJ would be able to appear on ‘Music Bank’ or not.

It’s been over a month since the audio files of ‘In Heaven’ were released and not only have JYJ not received a single invitation to appear on a music program, but even ‘Music Bank’, on whom many had placed their hopes, completely changed their stance and have become the target of JYJ and their fans’ disappointment. With KBS’ ridiculous change of heart coming to light, it makes one wonder if they ever even considered allowing JYJ to appear on ‘Music Bank’ in the first place.

What’s most difficult to comprehend is the fact that JYJ’s name can’t even be found on the show’s ‘K-Chart’, which focuses more on objectivity than most other music programs as it takes into consideration digital audio file downloads, album sales, number of times a song is broadcasted and public preference.

Even if JYJ were unable to appear on the show like KBS stated, they should at least be included in the ‘K-Chart’ and be able to compete with other singers. Allowing a singer to appear on a show and having that singer’s music included in music charts are two completely different issues. If KBS did not allow JYJ to appear on ‘Music Bank’, even if they were to grab the number one spot on the ‘K-Chart’, this wouldn’t clash with KBS’ current stance. The fact that the group isn’t even considered on the charts is only deepening their fans’ suspicions.

Regarding KBS’ official statement, JYJ’s agency C-JeS Entertainment stated, “KBS must show proof that they are making the decision on JYJ’s appearance with the same criteria that they are using for all celebrities who are currently appearing on their programs,” and “If KBS respects the verdict made by the courts, we believe it is only right for KBS to take full responsibility in ensuring that they stay fair and execute the courts’ verdict that guarantees JYJ unrestrained independent activities.”

KBS and JYJ’s disputes continue to pile up with KBS’s surprise cancellation of JYJ’s performance in the ‘Jeju 7 Natural Wonders of the World Special’ and KBS’ unjust review of ‘Pierrot’. But a large portion of the public refuses to accept the current situation of JYJ being unable to appear on music programs. JYJ’s Kim Junsu, Kim Jaejoong and Park Yoochun, who are unable to appear on ‘Music Bank’ due to their lawsuit with SM, is currently hitting it big through dramas and musicals. It’s quite ironic, really.

[TRANS] The Surprising Similarities Between JYJ, Kim Eo Joon And Infinite Challenge

[TRANS] The Surprising Similarities Between JYJ, Kim Eo Joon And Infinite Challenge

Similarity 1. They are all experiencing unfair events that are quite strange and hard to understand.

JYJ’s album topped Gaon’s album sales charts for September and it is said that till now, they’ve sold over 350,000 copies. This is most probably the highest album sales record of all the album that have been released in Korea this year. They even topped the online music charts as soon as the tracks from the album were released online. The dramas they appeared in, which are SungKyunKwan Scandal, Miss Ripley and Protect the Boss, have all been extremely popular and the members themselves have been praised for their acting skills.

But JYJ are currently unable to appear on music programs as singers. Though they top album charts, though they are popular and though they are the forerunners of the Hallyu Wave, they are unable to appear on music programs. They are unable to, even though they want to. It’s quite a strange and unfair thing for them. What’s even stranger is that though they sell so many albums and though they top online music charts, their names can never be found on any of the ranking charts of the three major broadcasting companies’ music programs.

There’s a rumor flying around that Infinite Challenge may once more have disciplinary action taken against it by the Korea Communications Standards Commission. The reason is because of the recent car explosions and PD Journal reported that it was because the scene was aired without an advance warning. No one knows what will happen but as Infinite Challenge isn’t the first production to have car explosions included in its broadcasted footage, it’s quite strange to suddenly have them pushed into the spotlight for it.

Kim Eo Joon’s Unconventional Advice has had quite high ratings amongst the MBC radio programs and has been ranked high as a Podcast. But suddenly, the news has been delivered that the show has been scrapped. The program’s only been around for six months and has been steadily gaining much popularity over this period of time, so it’s hard to believe that this show is suddenly getting the axe. Now that we look back, we can see that Yoon Do Hyun’s Two O’clock Date, which featured Kim Eo Joon, has also disappeared. It couldn’t be that the show is being scrapped just because of Kim Eo Joon but it’s quite a strange incident indeed.

Similarity 2. They are all fighting with something big.

JYJ fought and are still fighting SM, a major entertainment agency. They filed a lawsuit against their unjust contract and the Courts accepted their injunction request. Their opponent SM is undisputedly the largest entertainment agency in Korea. But that is not to say that SM is linked to what has happened to JYJ till now. We are merely trying to get across the fact that JYJ are currently up against the nation’s top entertainment agency.

Infinite Challenge is fighting against social irregularities. They fought for the Dokdo issue, and they take on the role of letting the world know of those who are suffering in areas that aren’t that well-known. But they don’t show these outright and instead opt to show allusions here or here amidst the fun and laughter they provide. It’s a very classy way of social criticism and a very sophisticated method of social participation. But as always, Evil is strong and powerful. It can’t be denied that the bad points, problems and irregularities of society are too strong of an opponent.

Kim Eo Joon is fighting with vested interests. He often uses swearwords to give a piercing admonition against it. Kim Eo Joon is the person who is willing to boldly take on issues that others were too afraid to even mention. With no vested interest in anything, he has placed himself within his own kingdom that he himself built and has been fighting off the pressure from vested interests that continue to attack him. He had to give up his own vested rights to fight against a strong opponent.

Similarity 3. They are all staying afloat thanks to their strong fandoms.

One of the major reasons why JYJ have been doing well despite the fact that they haven’t been able to appear on music programs is because of their fans. These fans support their stars, though they are unable to see JYJ on TV, and are waiting by JYJ’s side for the day that these strange events disappear for good.

The fanatics of Infinite Challenge have been strongly demanding that Infinite Challenge be left alone. Many fans, with the thought that Infinite Challenge should be protected, have come together with the show as their center. It seems that they are willing to even collect money from their own pockets if it means that the show can keep going. They have interpreted the messages given to them by Infinite Challenge and are working alongside the show in harmony.

Kim Eo Joon’s fans are giving him their full support. They know that he will continue living life in his own way and he in return is giving them the encouragement, ‘Don’t back down!’. This could also be something that he’s saying to himself. Though he knows that there are many fans who have his back, he cares deeply for his fans as though he is all alone. And though his fans complain and act indifferent, they are willing to step up and defend him if needed.

Conclusion

There are countless people in the world who share similarities. It’s not an amazing thing. It may be that the three similarities these three groups share aren’t that amazing after all. But considering the fact that we feel pity at the first similarity that they are faced with unjust events, pride at the second similarity that they are fighting a strenuous battle against very powerful vested rights, and electrifying fear at the third similarity that without the strong foundation of a fandom to support them, they could have disappeared without a trace, one could also feel that these similarities are truly something special. It could just be a feeling.

There has always been the saying that if coincidences keep occurring, then it’s not an accident, it’s fate. But what stands out more than this statement is the saying that, ‘If coincidences keep occurring, then it was planned from the start’ because this feels closer to the reality that we live in. Whatever the case, we pray that these three teams no longer have to suffer from strange events that are unacceptable.

The Korean Invasion — 5 Must Hear Groups New York Daily News

The Korean Invasion

5 MUST-HEAR GROUPS:

Ready to dip your toe into the Korean Wave? Here are the top five South Korean acts that will help immerse you in the world of K-Pop:

2NE1
Unlike other Korean girl groups who capitalize on sex appeal or being saccharine and cutesy, this group rose to the top of the charts for their anthems on girl power and boy bashing. When they aren’t dominating the charts in Korea and Japan, the group — Dara, Bom, Minzy and leader CL — are making a statement in the fashion world. Often described as “fierce,” this fearless foursome express their style through fashion houses like Alexander McQueen, Gareth Pugh, Proenza Schouler, Balmain and Jeremy Scott, who has become one of the band’s biggest supporters. Catch them repping South Korea as one of the Best Bands of the World nominated by MTV Iggy.
Download this: “I Am the Best,” a catchy electronic beat with a bass-friendly undertone.

Big Bang
After debuting their signature hip-pop sound in 2006, the five-member team dominated the South Korean charts and later did the same in Japan. First topping the charts with the upbeat single “Lies,” the band has since become one of Asia’s most recognizable acts. And with a collaboration with Major Lazer’s Diplo on one song by members G-Dragon and T.O.P. called “Knockout,” it seems like Asia’s not the only place they’re receiving attention.

Super Junior
How do you get attention from tween girls everywhere? Stick as many good-looking guys as possible on a stage. The 12-member Super Junior has already been deemed one of South Korea’s biggest “hallyu” groups by the BBC and they have a far reach of fans from Slovenia to Peru, where they were named one of the 30 “Sexiest Men in the World.” Their heavy pop tracks and slick dance moves have already made them nationwide sensations with an international presence.

2PM
While other boy bands captured attention through their pretty-boy images, this group capitalizes on their masculine look. Each member sports six-pack abs, regularly revealed onstage to the delight of thousands of screaming fans. The six-member group focuses on heavy acrobatics and intricate dance moves and has become almost Chippendale-like — without the cheesy bow ties.
Download this: “Heartbeat,” a dramatic track that starts out with a melancholy piano riff.

TVXQ
The Backstreet Boys in their heyday have nothing on this band. After some member drama last year, where three performers decided to leave, the two survivors, Max Changmin and U-Know Yunho, carried on. With tight choreography and impressive pipes, this dynamic duo has become the epitome of K-Pop: slick dance moves, stellar musical productions and big voices to boot.

We all know who performed last year in New York–only our own JYJ and they performed in Canada, and L.A, and New Jersey, and .. The difference here is that SME isn’t being ignored or prevented from getting the word out. I love HoMin and I am happy over their successes–I just don’t want any illusions out there as to who the trailblazers really are.

It’s true that K-Pop has a different sensibility that is often fun to watch and listen to; but…. it IS often very formulaic. Much of it can be considered a manufactured industry with limited artistic freedom for the performers; and it has a dark underbelly that includes serious exploitation of the artists and payoffs to improve popularity chart rankings. For example, the article mentions “some member drama” with TVXQ when 3 members decided to leave. In fact the 3 members – now a popular trio known as JYJ – sued SM Entertainment. The Korean Courts ruled in JYJ’s favor saying their contract with SM Entertainment was invalid because it amounted to a “Slave Contract”. The only thing left to settle with regard to the lawsuit are the damages owed to JYJ from SM Entertainment. In the meantime the Court ordered SM Entertainment to stop interfering with the activities of JYJ. (continued from above) Despite the ruling SM Entertainment continues to use their influence to prevent JYJ from renting venues for live performances and appearing on Korean music programs – even the state-owned KBS (Korean Broadcasting System) network still refuses to honor the Court’s decision. SM Entertainment has had similar issues with other popular groups in the past. The Korean courts, Korea Fair Trade Commission, and even members of the Korean Parliament are involved in efforts to break the seeming monopoly that a few K-Pop industry giants have over the popular music sector in South Korea.

wildmuffins is right. sadly, in korean music, the big one, sme, just because bring the best they find and do TONS of promotions, became the most feared one to by radios and tv channels. if these companies don’t do like sme want, they will not receive their idols. KBS did the most of the bad stuffs to YG Ent. and JYJ just because they wanted the exclusivity and the idols of sme. and sme take all the liberty during the first year of their rookies, own ALL songs and do the best to own the groups name. plus to be out of sme is terrible! the person don’t receive much and hav to pay more than 30 times what will receive during all their contract.

not just sme, but others are known for stuffs like that. KARA needed to do something just to have DSP Media making a better deal. and bekah, that decided to graduate from her group After School showed that they asked too much for their idols, making them have a lot of stress. korean idols, sadly, most of the time work. 3 hours sleep is pretty much common there. it without counting that at least in sme, the vacation times was just a week per year. beeing a korean idols is, sadly, hard and very tiring. most of the times too they have to take medicine and such just to perform.

even if sme method is good, sme do it just to appears that they creat the idols, when they already have the talent and the will to become even better. plus, sme isn’t this good in using the idols talent right. snsd have at least 4 wonderful dancers, but rarely they have a song that these 4 can really show their talent. plus sme have a really bad thing about just doing stuffs that are “trending” inspide of doing what the group like more, as 2NE1 and BigBang do. sme have a very bad tendency of bringing the best groups and ending them. H.O.T, Shinhwa,TVXQ…. sme just can’t keep the best together, and they always complain about sme because the exactly same thing. however, sme always put their rights as being selfish and traitors, not humans.

[Pic+Trans] Jaejoong’s Apartment Featured on Maison Marie Claire November Edition

[Pic+Trans] Jaejoong’s Apartment Featured on Maison Marie Claire November Edition

For the November issue of “Maison”, we will be introducing Jaejoong’s apartment.

For an idol artiste to appear in “Maison”, it must be a bit strange to everyone right? As the editor, I thought so too, but upon seeing his apartment, I felt that it really suit “Maison”.

His apartment fits a bachelor in his twenties and the conceptual designs were rather manly (mannish), as designed in the living room, bedroom, guest rooms, work room and a small guest reception space etc, which consist of many different concepts. Jaejoong loves to stay at home and thus hoped that every space in the house would be as though “traveling through a different trip”, and so it was designed in such an unique style.

Jaejoong was rather involved in this interior designing project. While he was filming ‘Protect The Boss’, he would make an effort to confirm the designs and maintained a good communication with the designer that “Maison” has recommended. As everything was done very well, it made us feel that we should let Jaejoong had a try on being the creative director. From my own perspective as an editor, this (feature story) dispersed our bias conception for artistes, especially idols. Kekeke.

Everyone must be curious about Jaejoong’s apartment, right? The 17th anniversary issue of “Maison” in November will be released very soon, please do wait patiently for a while more. :D

Translation 111021 Ji Sung–Kim Jaejoong To Greet Japanese Fans With “Protect The Boss”

[Trans] 111021 Ji Sung–Kim Jaejoong To Greet Japanese Fans With “Protect The Boss”

Actor Ji Sung (34) and JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong (25) will be greeting their Japanese fans with “Protect the Boss.”

Starring both men, the SBS Wednesday-Thursday drama “Protect the Boss” will be aired in Japan mid next month. Japan’s KNTV and DATV will be first airing the 18 episode drama on 10 November and 12 November respectively, once a week. KNTV’s broadcast will be kicking off on Tuesday at 10pm (T/N: I believe they mean Thursday since 10 November is a Thursday), and DATV on Saturday at 11pm. Both broadcasts are during prime timeslots.

This success is credited to Jisung and Kim Jaejoong’s hallyu popularity. Ji Sung had gained the love of the Japanese fans after his performance in SBS’s “All In” and cemented his position with “New Heart.” Kim Jaejoong, with his previous singing activities in Japan, naturally enjoys an explosive popularity. In 2009, his collaboration with Han Hyo Joo in “Postman to Heaven” was his first foray into acting for the Japanese fans.

Ji Sung’s side said “Recently when (he) participated in the Busan International Film Festival, many foreign fans were gathered, and we could once again feel his popularity as a hallyu star. Together with the participation of Kim Jaejoong, we anticipate a great popularity (for the drama) in Japan.”
