[Review] 120928 The Unforgettable Night of SMTOWN World Tour III in Jakarta

The night of SMTOWN World Tour III in Jakarta started young; fans mobbed the entire area of the concert venue, Gelora Bung Karno a day before and more even joined in enjoy the concert from the outside for they held no tickets. This is the largest K-pop concert thus far held in Indonesia, and fans from all over the nation came to watch, more with their parent, or with a group of friends that shares the same passion through fanclubs.

This was truly a hard one for me, how could I ever encapsulate a night worth of tears, joy, happiness of all the audience present, who has literally fought their way through by purchasing tickets, flown to the city, and be welcomed by another mob of traffic, heat, and unsightly entrance? SMTOWN clearly has made its permanent mark that fans will be more devoted than ever to their favourites, and the new ones will come to appreciate and learn more in this new popular culture

 As scheduled on time at 6:30PM for the concert to start with no delay, due to the artiste’s tight schedule for their same night flight.Colors of green, blue, yellow and red dominantly filled the dark evening; fans vigorously holding their light sticks to all the artists that appear – that didn’t make any difference for the mega stage was prepared with lighting that spotlighted all over the stadium. Posters of all the SM Entertainment artists decorated around with the iconic SM mascot backdrop. Fans chanted all the names, chorus, took photos together, and shrieked to the videos playing. It was a stupefying sight for even before 6:30 strikes, everyone was in the greatest fever of K-pop, and nothing can stop the sporadic euphoria, even to people not at the concert nor venue, to need to know what was going on. I was part of it as soon as I was 20KM away from the stadium perimeters, a welcoming traffic jam of Jakarta thanks to the concert.

Aptly opened by f(x) ‘Hot Summer’, the weather in Jakarta was feverish and literally hot, they continued on with a warning of danger with ‘Pinocchio’. The level of excitement was deafening with chants and fans, especially when Victoria wishes to return to Indonesia soon! On the other hand, Amber is truly a favourite among the stadium. Unfortunately, due to the SBS drama ‘To The Beautiful You’, Sulli was not present, and so becomes Minho of SHINee.

The SM director and former H.O.T. member Kangta swooned the crowd after with a ballad ‘Remember’, and everyong immediately lowed down their voices to enjoy the slow beat. He made the crowd go mad with his simple Indonesian greeting of “Hello indonesia! Selamat malam, saya Kangta… Mantap!” (Hello Indonesia, good evening. My name is Kangta… Super!). He returned the crowd’s loud energy with ‘Breaka, Shaka‘ before switching the stage with a trio collaboration stage of f(x) Amber, SHINee Key and EXO Kris of Far East Movement’s ‘Like A G6′!

If anyone expects only performances within groups, prepare to view a different preparation for SM TOWN celebrates all the SM artistes within their company and to create special stages found no where else. So who had expected the beautiful sisters of f(x) Krystal and SNSD Jessica partied out with Katy Perry’s ‘California Girls‘; TVXQ! Changmin and Super Junior Kyuhyun in Bruno Mars’ ‘Just the Way You Are‘ where a fan was invited to be serenaded by the two; TaeTiSeo trio ‘DJ Got Us Falling In Love Again’ featuring D.O, Luhan, Sehun, and Chanyeol EXO for a start. Even without vocals, Victoria and Tao did a Chinese dance featuring their talent of flexibility and traditional martial arts from China. The collaboration stages flutters all fans across the stadium and it was all unexpected!

The game was on for the new youngest group, EXO-K and EXO-M to perform their two powerful single hits, History and MAMA. They looked as in par like all the other seniors in SM, and showed their promising energy and power to continue on to the rise of the Hallyu wave with their two groups of Korean and Mandarin.Short but sweet, they greeted a little in Indonesian and the reaction was wild and positive. I look forward to their continuing powerful skills in the future and not only just two songs


 

Taeyeon’s ‘Devil May Cry‘ mystified the stage in red and black, powerful once again as she presented on thie stage. SONE fans who had seen their Girls Generation Asia Tour will remember the same moment. Continued with ‘Run Devil Run‘, all 9 members were clad in black leather jackets and sexy short outfits for a strong impression. Nonetheless, once the lights were up after their energetic performance, the crowd went wild when leader Taeyeon greeted “Kami dari So Nyuh Shi Dae!” (We are from SNSD!). The devil look might not be the best image of the girls because when ‘Tell Me Your Wish’ and ‘Kissing You‘ came about with moving stage towards the main stage was prepared, the male fans were heard loud and clear.

Of course, Indonesia’s most favourite group due to their recent venture of SUPER SHOW 4 earlier this year, garners the loudest cheer from all other 8 groups – Super Junior started with the duet ‘Oppa Oppa‘ of Donghae and Eunhyuk in stellarly eye-catching costumes. Their other stage that reminds me of their concert SS4 with water fountains and elevated stage was recreated for ‘Superman’, still mesmerising, still beautiful to see, still thrilling to view all the members to slowly rise from below. The fans could not hold their excitement no more to continue on to watch their other hits of ‘Sexy, Free and Single’ and ‘Bonamana’


 
If that was only for a special group, birthdays are even more special where two SM members are having their birthdays in the weekend; SNSD Hyoyeon had been dedicated a special ‘It’s Hyours Day’ banner project for ther birthday is on the same day as the concert, and SHINee Key was to have his the next day. Both had gotten the greatest love from their fans filled the stadium with the “Happy Birthday” song. This was a truly special feat only for the Tour in Jakarta! Both members looked bashful and thankful and said words of thanks, and Key speaking in English.

SHINee, despite the lack of rapper Minho, did not stop their elemental act with water dance splash with their songs ‘Love Like Oxygen‘ featuring EXO Sehun to fill in Minho’s shoes, ‘Lucifer’, ‘Juliette’, and ‘Ring Ding Dong’. The final song from their latest mini-album, ‘Sherlock’, was the final five song that impressed the fans with their unique choreography. The duet everyone was waiting for was the appearance of main vocalist of the group, Jonghyun, to come topless and show off his built body with the youngest Taemin in ‘Internet War’. Boy, did that shake the entire stadium up with the powerful metal rock rendition!

Those who are seniors in the K-pop scene since early 2000s will be ecstatic for the next performer, the best of Asia, BoA. ‘Hurricane Venus‘ made a strong impact from the little dancer, and later with ‘Only One‘, her own penned song featuring SHINee Taemin to dance, and ‘The Shadow‘. Known since she was still in her early teenager days, BoA talked to the audience and said that this was her second time coming to Indonesia. Her effortless cool style with a casual tank top and baggy pants for her powerful dance choreography proves her stability and image that she is not your usual idol.

It was a night to remember where fireworks were shot, water fountains glittered the sky, and a lot of pink balloons was released to the sky, noting that the 4-hour concert was at its end. With the last song ‘Hope’, the entire SMTOWN artists came to say goodbye, running all over the stage and did more interaction with fans who had thrown them gifts and taking pictures together with phones and cameras. It was so hard not to not be seated as all the performances made myself want to jump up and stand to be able to see all things clearly and close while singing along to the performance. The magic of K-pop was brought just for one night that made a plain Saturday into a special one, and a leap of great heights for the entire Indonesian entertainment industry.

Arguably the biggest Korean pop music event to be held in Singapore so far will take place on Nov 23.

SM Town Live Tour III, a multi-act mega concert over four hours featuring Korean music superstars Super Junior, Girls’ Generation and BoA among others, will be staged at the Marina Bay floating platform.

Its stage is touted as the world’s largest floating stage. Measuring 120m by 83m, or 9,960 sq m, it is considerably larger than the 5,572 sq m National Day Parade stage this year.

And with 18,000 tickets to be released for sale, starting Sept 29, it should also draw far more fans than the Mnet Music Awards held last year at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, which has a maximum capacity of 12,000.

At the moment, Singapore will be one of only three stops for the concert in South-east Asia. Jakarta and Bangkok are the other two.

 SM Town Live, which started in 2008, is a marquee event for the Korean pop label SM Entertainment, gathering the company’s roster of top acts such as Super Junior, Girls’ Generation, BoA, Shinee, f(x) and TVXQ. While the final line-up in Singapore has yet to be finalised, the first three acts have been confirmed.

The 10-member boy band Super Junior and nine-strong girl group Girls’ Generation, among the most popular K-pop acts in Singapore, have performed here in the past year.

Singer BoA, a former teen prodigy who released her debut album at the age of 13, has never performed in Singapore, as hercareer had peaked well before the Korean wave, or Hallyu, had started.

The current SM Town Live Tour is the concert’s third edition.

According to local concert promoter Running Into The Sun, which is bringing the concert here, it is a huge undertaking which has taken it 2 1/2 years to bring to reality.

Ms Beatrice-Chia Richmond, the company’s creative director, says: “SM Town is truly the mother of all K-pop concerts.”

She adds that the event is a “massive concert that has only been staged so far at iconic international venues”, including Seoul’s
Olympic Stadium, Los Angeles’ Staples Center, Tokyo’s Tokyo Dome and New York’s Madison Square Garden.

In Singapore, 5,000 fans will get to be in the mosh pit on the floating platform itself, with the luckiest ones just 3m from the stage.

The four-hour concert will feature fireworks, flying stunts and water features.

Priority ticket sales for OCBC card members and Samsung customers (who have to produce any Samsung handset) are from Sept 29 to Oct 1.

Public sales starts from Oct 2.

Prices will be announced later and it is not yet known how many tickets will be set aside for priority sales.

It must be because my voice is naturally husky.. That’s why no matter how I sing, my voice really isn’t the type that gets hoarse easily.. But today when I woke up, finally my voice went hoarse.. Is it because all the tension is eased now..? At the same time while thinking “Ah, it’s been such a long time”..It’s also a relief that it became like this after the South American tour ended….^^ Although I lost my voice.. because it’s like a badge to show how I’ve come so far in the past 3 weeks without rest.. it’s a kind of weariness that makes me happy.. To the American and South American fans who made my heart run so fast.. and give me the energy to do nothing but my best every single time.. Thank you sincerely.. Ah.. Now I really have to get some rest ㅎ

So much I saw, so much to say, yet so speechless during Junsu’s actual live performance >.<

People I met: I thought I had to make sacrifices to make it here, but others really showed their support for Junsu. This was my first ever JYJ/DBSK anything concert ever (went to JYJ LA showcase but not actual concert) so I was not anticipating the global support Junsu and the rest of JYJ has! Met fans from Canada, Japan, Thailand, China and Vietnam. From states: Utah, Nevada, Washington, and of course California.

-Also got really close to a Korean Fan, who is studying abroad here at the perfect time for the concert. She is AMAZINGG. Was a fan since Debut DBSK days, still a fan of them all, and almost 10 years and counting!! I was such a nuisance, kept asking so many inside scoops on our boys. And boy, did she know A LOT. K-fans really do keep a lot to themselves haha ^^;; For instance she said some fact/faction on some of their dating life but we couldn’t go too deep b/c of our communication issues. PS: She said I could fan account what she says as she can’t really write in English, and I will remark on her a lot x)

-Talked with Automatic and his Fiancé! Automatic, was a star! He was so chill with talking to Su’s fans and getting pictures. His fiancé told our group that she was happy to work with Junsu, and –cross fingers- with JYJ in the future. It was also her that helped Su with his English for Uncommitted. We said thanks for trying her best as his English coach HEHE b/c he really did improve!

 

The Line: Thank you to JYJ4SF for preparing so much for us (lightsticks, bookmarks, signs etc.) while waiting for so long! One scene I might be embarrassed about was when we were moving into the Hollywood Palladium, there was food/drink litter and trash EVERYWHERE from waiting in the long lines. My new Korean friend said, that NEVER in Korea would they trash the outside venue because they did not want to tarnish the name of JYJ/Junsu. YIKES, I felt ashamed, though I do admit this part of Hollywood can’t be much cleaner.

Venue: The venue itself was small but intimate for Junsu’s LA concert. Top floor was not open for general audience, only Automatic and other VIP guests went up there. I heard standing floor VIP was sold out, and looked filled to me. Even where I stood in general admission, it was partially full. Love the turnout! There would have been more red and special glowsticks visible too if they were not confiscated by staff at the gate -_- But one good thing about a smaller venue, everyone can practically have a good view of Su.

ACTUAL CONCERT: I’m at a loss of words. I was calm before waiting in line, and then anticipation and excitement arose! I yelled at times, but wanted to hear all of Su’s incredible live singing so did not jump around as much. It went by too fast, and I didn’t wanna miss a single beat. JUNSU came out, and I felt all our adrenaline, blood pumping. My feet were not tired or sore anymore.

-I couldn’t tell, but my Korean friend whose seen him countless of times in Korea said his condition isn’t his best. He was not sick it seems, but prolly due to jetlag and back to back concerts. I thought he was so powerful, intense and energetic!

-FAVORITE SONGS: All were FANTASTIC but must see are Tarantellegra, No gain, INTOXICATION, Elizabeth, and Uncommitted. My favorite ballads: Round and Round, You are so Beautiful. Su even ripped his pants in Uncommitted but played it off well. Couldn’t see in my area, until he left stage suddenly, quickly changed, and told us about it. Su said it was a treat for those who were able to catch that haha.

-During Genie Time, Junsu received a soccer jersey shirt as a gift! Don’t think it counted as a wish. He did Angel Xiah (which he STILL LOVES TO DO based on my k-fan friend, but is shyer as he ages and with men around). He said happy birthday to a fan (lucky girl!), and we wanted him to do an Oyaji gag, but declined prolly cause most of us can’t understand. You underestimate us Su, how can we not know your favorite gags?! He finally did Gangnam style with all our persuading as our last wish!! Maybe he be more comfortable with music on, but I like seeing him all cute and awkward LOL. He said he can’t really do it, cause he simply watched the video but never tried learning it. Junsu, please. You are a fast learner haha, and you say you listen to Gangnam style frequently in your cyworld interview too. Interpreter said Junsu did meet Psy in LA just recently as a plus!

-A fan boy said something prolly like an “I love you Junsu!” and Su replied with his lively English words he knows, sorta like, “WOOH! CHHYEAA! OK! THANK YOU!”

-Fallen Leaves: Yes, he chocked near the end of the performance. No tears, but definitely watery eyed. Aww Su, this song is very meaningful to you and still gets you emotional. Kind of ironic because my Korean friend said she wants to see Junsu cry because in all her concerts seeing him, he never cried! Now she’s saying, “Uljima (don’t cry)!)” He paused a bit to collect himself, tried to smile a bit for us, breathed a big breath, and continued to complete the song. BEAUTIFUL.

CONCLUSION: Honestly, I am not even Junsu biased but Junsu truly captured my heart during this two hour event. I understand why Junsu is so sexy yet so cute, so childlike yet so mature/charismatic! He really is a 110% performer/artist. I can admit no one can hit dance moves with live vocals as spot on as him. It went by too fast. They really do leave us with wanting more huh?! I went by myself, came away with unforgettable memories.
I was trying to make it short but was much longer than expected so sorry! Overall, my favorite and BEST CONCERT I’ve ever been to! No exaggeration needed.

JYJ member Junsu is the first K-Pop artist to perform in Mexico. Junsu commented, “I worked really hard not to make anything boring or normal.”

Yesterday, Junsu held a press conference in Mexico. Junsu commented, “Although this was my first concert in Mexico, I was shocked to see that all 3,000 seats were sold out. Since I am the first K-Pop musician to perform here, I promise not to let anyone down.”

 

There had been many problems before being able to release a solo album and hold a world tour. Junsu commented, “In reality, it is hard to show someone’s face on TV unless it’s acting and so I rejected the idea to make a new album at first. I was also casted for a mini drama series, but if both my acting and singing career are on the line, I knew that I would have to choose what I am best at. That is why I gave up my acting role and decided to go on with making this album.”

Junsu’s new album was a major success with over 120,000 albums sold. His Asia tour brought in 40,000 fans as well.

Junsu believed that his success was due to the internet. He commented, “The days where songs would only become popular through TV broadcasts are gone. Now, it become popular through music videos online. The internet allows anyone to advertise their content online.”

Junsu also commented, “Doing musicals helped me change into a more positive person. Certain things I’ve learned from musicals helped me to make this new album as well. If I had not done musicals, I would not have made this great album. Musicals helped me to express myself freely as an artist.”

Junsu was very thankful that he was able to portray his own style and image through this album.

After his concert in Mexico, he will continue on to Brazil and Chile.

Xia Junsu, also known as Kim Junsu from JYJ, shared a rather amusing photo of himself, humoring his followers on Twitter. On September 5, JYJ’s Kim Junsu tweeted, “Don’t you like me?” and attached the funny selca. As shown in the photo, the singer is seen giving a back hug to a human-sized doll, leaning is for a kiss.

Netizens who saw the photo commented, “I wish I was her,” “He is too adorable,” “Congrats on finishing your U.S. tour,” “I’ll never reject you Xia,” and more.

Meanwhile, Junsu wrapped up his North American tour with a concert in Los Angeles on September 2. At the Hollywood Palladium, the solo artist gave an explosive performance for his 2,000 American fans. Junsu will now head south to perform before his fans in Mexico, Brazil and Chile.

Junsu has successfully finished his second concert in L.A. as part of his world tour.

On September 2 at the Hollywood Palladium, Junsu held his ‘XIA 1st World Tour in LA’ concert with 2,000 of his fans. As this was labor day weekend, he was able to meet many more of his fans at the concert.

Just 3 days after his New York concert, he has now successfully finished his LA performance. His 120 minute concert was filled with energy and power. He opened the concert with the song “Breath” and showed off his dance moves in “Set Me Free.”

His english title song which was produced by producer Automatic, called “Uncommitted” was also showcased on stage. He also sang his hit song from his previous album called, “Tarantallegra.”

Junsu commented, “After finishing both the New York and LA concert, I now really feel like I am on a world tour. I am so thankful to all the fans that came out to support me and I hope that this will be a lasting memory for them.”

With the end of his LA performance, Junsu will travel to Mexico on September 6 to continue his world tour.

“Junsu”, “Junsu”, “Junsu”, chanted the crowd, at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. Xia, also known as Junsu, sat silently upon his throne at the top of the stage observing the crowd. It was about halfway through the concert on the first stop of his 1st Solo World Tour. The crowd continued to chant and scream for more. Xia who had just performed about 10 songs, many from his new album Tarantallegra, was calmly taking it all. The crowd had fallen in love.

At the start of the show, Xia who had been lifted unto the stage on a moving platform was dressed in a blue suit with long black boots. He started off strong, with the first track on his new album, called “Breath.” “Breath” is a song with an urban pop theme and strong beats, to which Xia and his dancing crew seemed to move with in unison, effortlessly.

Following “Breathe,” Junsu mellowed the crowd a bit with “No Gain,” “Lullaby,” and “Intoxication,” all songs from his new album Tarantallegra. Most of the lyrics and music of the album were composed and arranged by Junsu. Junsu showed some of his brilliant creativity with a prop not seen often on a concert stage. A three-paneled mirror was placed on the stage during his performance of Intoxication, multiplying the amount of Junsu’s on stage by 4. The mirror may have helped a bit, but the crowd was already intoxicated with Junsu’s singing and dancing, before the mirror made it’s way unto stage.

A little over an hour saw Junsu display his wide musical range and talents. Singing and dancing to urban pop themed songs, grooving to R&B inspired tracks, and wooing the crowd with ballads that hug heavy with emotion. Junsu also gave the audience a little taste of the musical “Elisabeth,” which was the inspiration for his new solo album.

“You had me at hello!” Okay, the crowd didn’t actually respond that way when Xia introduced himself by first saying “hi”. But with the screams that filled the air it sure felt that way. The concert took on an air of intimacy and personal interaction between Xia and the crowd. “Pogoshipoyo” screamed a fan near the stage. Xia looked directly at her and said, “I miss you, too.” If responding directly to the affectionate screams of fans wasn’t enough to make the concert seem like a gathering of friends, Xia decided to grant three wishes to the crowd.

One of the wishes came from a girl called Brittany, and she asked him to sing to her. “What song do you want me to sing to you?” Xia asked. “Any song of your choice” Brittany responded, teasing him. At this Xia proceeded to serenade his audience with acappella rendition of Whitney Houston’s “Greatest Love of All”. No instruments, just vocals. The crowd fell silent in awe. After one verse, Xia shared with the audience that he sang that song a lot in middle school.

Undisputed throughout the night was the vigor and strength of Junsu’s vocals. Before the concert, fan after fan when asked what stands out the most for you about Junsu, answered strong vocals or awesome vocals. And during the concert Xia did not disappoint his devoted fans who came from as far as Japan and Texas. He sang throughout the concert with such heart pounding vocals, just like one of his Texas fans had proclaimed before the start of the concert.

The range of Xia’s appeal is remarkable. The age range of the audience featured young teenagers all the way through grandmothers. Even further remarkable was looking around to see the more seasoned fans singing along with him, especially to the ballads. Many of these seasoned ladies were from China and Japan. And they have known Xia since his early days with Tong Vfang Xien Qi or Tohoshinki, depending on if you are Chinese or Japanese, respectively. Although they were saddened when their split happened, they have remained fans of Xia because of his outstanding talents as an artist, dancer and songwriter.

As Junsu’s first solo concert outside Asia moved closer to it’s conclusion, he gave the audience a special look at the music video for his new single Uncommitted. Then he took the stage to give the crowd a very memorable moment. Xia, for the first time performed Uncommitted to a live audience. The crowd hung unto every word and musical note.

A day earlier, after the Xia press conference at the DoubleTree Suites, one of the individuals who reportedly was involved in the production for Uncommitted and goes by the name Niddy, expressed his admiration of Xia. He articulated that one thing that stood out in working with Xia was his work ethic and dedication to excellence. He added further how much he appreciated the Korean culture, especially with regard to their interaction and devotion to each other.

“See you, soon”. Xia said to his beloved fans, with a little ting of sadness in his voice. All too soon it seemed two hours had come and gone. Xia had left a little piece of his heart on stage tonight. He will continue his 1st Solo World Tour with stops in Los Angeles California on 09-02-12 at the Hollywood Palladium. And then Mexico on the 6th of September, Brazil on the 8th of September, and finally Chile on the 10th of September.

 The ‘SMTOWN LIVE WORLD TOUR III in TOKYO’ concert was held in Tokyo Dome, Japan on the 4th and 5th of August.

The two-day event attracted a total of 100,000 people and showcased an extravagant repertoire of 52 songs by SM artistes such as Kangta, BoA, TVXQ, TSZX the Grace, Super Junior, Girls’ Generation, SHINee, f(x) and EXO, who performed through collaborations, units and in their respective teams.
