120124 TVXQ Reunion Through AVEX?

TVXQ Reunion Through AVEX?

Recent news on the possibility of TVXQ‘s reunion is sending shockwaves throughout the industry.

On January 22nd, a Japanese article titled, “Will Avex act as the savior? TVXQ’s reunion project” surfaced. It reported of rumors of a reunion concert at Tokyo Dome orchestrated by Avex, who was previously accused of hindering JYJ‘s Japanese activities. In light of Avex’s recent under-performing releases, it is said that they are willing to go head with this project and stop hindering JYJ’s Japanese activities. Japanese superstar Ayumi Hamasaki is rumored to be negotiating on behalf of both sides.

While the news of a possible reunion is being met with enthusiasm by fans all over the world, many are skeptical of the chances of such a reunion actually occurring. The fact that this reunion is being orchestrated by Avex instead of SM Entertainment is also a cause of skepticism.

The article goes on to state, “While the reunion of TVXQ is something that many fans are waiting, the small possibility of this actually happening is an indicator of Avex’s desperation,” hinting that Avex’s recent lack of success may be reason for pursuing such a unlikely project.

TVXQ fans responded to the news with, “While it would be great if reunion happens, it seems unlikely“, “They say Avex will lead the project but I can’t trust them“, and “I hope they stop writing these pointless reunion articles“.

As no official statements have been released from any parties, it’s important to wait for these rumors and speculations to be confirmed. Stay tuned to allkpop as we await developments on this matter.

120117 Coast Guard Raged at Liner Captain…

As you know, there are times when I choose to report world news and human interest stories. After all, JYJCY may be interested in the world around them as well as yourselves. This is a report of a cruise ship disaster in which the Captain did not elect to go down with the ship. It is a rule of the sea that the Captain is always the last to leave his sinking ship. This makes me thinkof the Titanic–the Captain elected to save others before himself. Our prayers go out to those who have lost family members or are living victims of this disaster.

ROME (Reuters) – The Italian coast guard angrily ordered the captain of the capsized Italian cruise ship to go back aboard to oversee the evacuation, but he stalled, according to an apparent recording of their radio exchange played on national television.

Captain Francesco Schettino is in jail, accused of multiple manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship. He denies all wrongdoing and was questioned by magistrates on Tuesday.

The audio recording, on newspaper Corriere della Sera’s website and played on national state television, reflected the chaos and confusion in the minutes after the Costa Concordia, carrying more than 4,000 passengers and crew, hit a rock off the Tuscany coast on Friday night and keeled over.

Schettino, who had already taken to a lifeboat, can be heard talking to a coast guard official based in the western Italian port of Livorno.

Eleven people have been confirmed killed and 24 are still missing.

A Coast Guard official on Giglio, the island where the ship hit a rock, said he could not confirm the authenticity of the tape and said the Coast Guard did not give it to the newspaper. There was no comment available from the captain’s lawyer.

The recording is full of background noises such as radio static, beeps and background noise of people and confusion. As translated by Reuters, the entire conversation went as follows:

Coast Guard: Hello.

Captain: Good evening, chief.

Coast Guard: Listen, this is De Falco from Livorno. Am I speaking with the captain?

Captain: Good evening, Chief De Falco.

Coast Guard: Tell me your name, please.

Captain: I am Captain Schettino, chief.

Coast Guard: Schettino?

Captain: Yes.

Coast Guard: Listen, Schettino. There are people trapped on board. Now, you go with your lifeboat. Under the bow of the ship, on the right side, there is a ladder. You climb on that ladder and go on board the ship. Go on board the ship and get back to me and tell me how many people are there. Is that clear. I am recording this conversation, Captain Schettino.

(Captain tries to speak but Coast Guard can’t hear him clearly. Voices in the Coast Guard room.)

Coast Guard: Speak up! (captain tries to speak) Captain, put your hand over the microphone and speak in a louder voice!

Captain: At this moment the ship is listing.

Coast Guard: There are people who are coming down the ladder on the bow. Go back in the opposite direction, get back on the ship, and tell me how many people there are and what they have on board. Tell me if there are children, women and what type of help they need. And you tell me the number of each of these categories. Is that clear?

Listen Schettino, perhaps you have saved yourself from the sea but I will make you look very bad. I will make you pay for this. Dammit, go back on board!

(Noise can be heard in the background. Apparently other Coast Guard officers are shouting to each other in the same room about “the ship, the ship”)

Captain: Please …

Coast Guard: There is no ‘please’ about it. Get back on board. Assure me you are going back on board!

Captain: I’m in a lifeboat, I am under here. I am not going anywhere. I am here.

Coast Guard: What are you doing, captain?

Captain: I am here to coordinate the rescue…

Coast Guard (interrupting): What are you coordinating there! Get on board! Coordinate the rescue from on board! Are you refusing?

Captain: No, I am not refusing.

Coast Guard: Are you refusing to go aboard, captain? Tell me the reason why you are not going back on board.

Captain: (inaudible)… there is a another lifeboat…

Coast Guard (interrupting, yelling): You get back on board! That is an order! There is nothing else for you to consider. You have sounded the “Abandon Ship.” Now I am giving the orders. Get back on board. Is that clear? Don’t you hear me?

Captain: I am going aboard.

Coast Guard: Go! Call me immediately when you are on board. My rescue people are in front of the bow.

Captain: Where is your rescue craft?

Coast Guard: My rescue craft is at the bow. Go! There are already bodies, Schettino. Go!

Captain: How many bodies are there?

Coast Guard: I don’t know! … Christ, you should be the one telling me that!

Captain: Do you realize that it is dark and we can’t see anything?

Coast Guard: So, what do you want to do, to go home, Schettino?! It’s dark and you want to go home? Go to the bow of the ship where the ladder is and tell me what needs to be done, how many people there are, and what they need! Now!

Captain: My second in command is here with me.

Coast Guard: Then both of you go! Both of you! What is the name of your second in command?

Captain: His name is Dmitri (static)”

Coast Guard: What is the rest of his name? (static) You and your second in command get on board now! Is that clear?

Captain: Look, chief, I want to go aboard but the other lifeboat here has stopped and is drifting. I have called …

Coast Guard (interrupting): You have been telling me this for an hour! Now, go aboard! Get on board, and tell me immediately how many people there are!

Captain: OK, chief.

Coast Guard: Go! Immediately!

[News] 120113 JYJ’s Junsu Denies His Involvement in Hotel-building Plans for Jeju Island

[News] 120113 JYJ’s Junsu Denies His Involvement in Hotel-Building Plans for Jeju Island

A representative of JYJ has asserted that member Junsu is not involved in hotel construction plans for Jeju Island.

Various reports have been going around stating that Junsu is on his way to becoming an entrepreneur by constructing a hotel in Jeju Island.

The representative explained that those reports are false.

While the plans are coming from Junsu’s father, Junsu himself is not directly involved. “Junsu has no relations to his father’s plans on opening a hotel business in Jeju Island,” they said. “This entrepreneurial plan is under Junsu’s father, not Junsu himself.”

They continued, “Junsu barely has enough time to keep up with his main career as an entertainer.”

Aside from his work with JYJ, Junsu is preparing for his upcoming musical “Elizabeth“, which is scheduled to begin on February 8th. Since Junsu is required to exude a masculine image on stage, he has been spending his days in the gym and nights working on music.

In related news, JYJ will be holding their first South American concerts in Peru and Chile on March 9th and 11th.

120111 7.3 Magnitude Quake Strikes Off Western Indonesia: USGS

Yet another quake. Siberia experienced a 6.6 quake last week. The weather is so unusual. Our first major snowstorm of the season has hit in mid-January. It hasn’t been this warm this time of year in 85 years. Prayers go out for all those affected by severe weather.

7.3 Magnitude Quake Strikes Off Western Indonesia: USGS

By Nurdin Hasan | AFP – 21 hrs ago

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of Indonesia’s northern Sumatra early Wednesday, sending panicked residents onto the streets and in search of higher ground.

Thousands on the island of Simeulue, 200 kilometres (124 miles) from the epicentre, ran from their homes as the ground shook, an AFP reporter on the scene said.

But after Indonesia issued a tsunami warning, the residents ran back inside to collect their belongings and then sought higher ground.

A warning was also issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, but both have since been lifted.

“There were no immediate reports of any damage or casualties, and that’s still the case,” Meteorology and Geophysics Agency official Tiar Prasetya said.

The agency said the under-sea quake hit at 1:37 am (1837 GMT), while the USGS reported the depth at 29 kilometres (18 miles).

A soldier named Eko who was on the shore on Simeulue when the earthquake struck said he monitored the water levels in fear of another tsunami.

“The water receded about a metre, which is a sign a tsunami is coming. Usually the water rushes back quickly, but that didn’t happen, so I was worried a tsunami would hit,” he told AFP.

The USGS reported the epicentre was 423 kilometres (262 miles) southwest of Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province on Indonesia’s Sumatra island.

In Banda Aceh, the ground shook for 30 seconds and terrified residents rushed out of their homes, but they returned indoors shortly after, an AFP reporter there said.

Aceh was the worst-affected area by the December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami — triggered by a giant 9.1-magnitude earthquake — that claimed 220,000 lives, three-quarters of them in Indonesia.

More than 20 people by a river in Banda Aceh climbed a bridge Wednesday morning after the quake to look out for signs of a potential tsunami.

Although the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center dropped its warning, it said: “There is a very small possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than a hundred kilometres from the earthquake epicentre.”

The Indonesian agency also reported two aftershocks of magnitude 5.4 and 5, respectively about 30 minutes and one hour after the initial quake.

Some coastal residents had moved further inland, taking shelter in mosques or camped by the roadside as a precaution, but there was no sense of panic, the AFP reporter said, adding that the aftershocks were not felt in Banda Aceh.

A powerful earthquake hit Sumatra in September 2009, killing more than 1,000 people, and seismologists have warned of the likelihood of another large quake in the coming years.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

[NEWS] 120110 K-Pop Stars To Tour Overseas In 2012

With seemingly unstoppable momentum, K-pop stars are advancing across the globe.

Many fans have asked the artists to visit their home countries through innovative methods like uploading flash mob videos online. Moved by these active and sincere requests, K-pop stars will hold concerts around the world and are planning additional gigs to accommodate the enthusiastic fans.

JYJ confirmed last week that it will hold its first concert in South America this year. The group is comprised of Jaejoong, Yuchun and Junsu, former members of one of Korea’s most popular boy bands, TVXQ. On March 9, the trio will perform at the Teatro Caupolican in Santiago, Chile. World famous bands such as X-Japan and Korn have previously performed at the venue. In November, JYJ will travel to the capital of Peru, Lima, and perform at Explanada Sur del Estadio Monumental, the second largest football stadium on the continent. The stadium had been a concert stage for Britney Spears, The Black Eyed Peas, and Avril Lavigne.

They gained popularity in South America after releasing the English album “The Beginning” in 2010 which included tracks produced by Kanye West and Rodney Jerkins. Many local newspapers and TV channels in Chile have publicized the news of the upcoming concert.

(irrelevant parts has been omitted)

TVXQ has also planned additional performances due to fan requests. Originally, “TVXQ Live Tour 2012 ~TONE~” was set to commence at Yokohama Arena in Japan on Jan. 18 and tour nine cities including, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sapporo, Hiroshima and Osaka, and present 20 shows until the end of March. However, local fans pleaded for more shows, and SM Entertainment announced Friday that it will add extra concerts to the tour schedule. The band will add two shows each at the Tokyo Dome, a 55,000-seat baseball stadium in the capital of Japan and the equally large Kyocera Dome in Osaka. The extended tour will present 24 shows in 11 cities and last until the end of April.

120109 Alaska Town Tries To Dig Out From Huge Snow Dump

January 7th, 2011   Alaska Town Tries To Dig Out From Huge Snow Dump

By RACHEL D’ORO | AP

In this Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 photo provided by the Alaska Division of Homeland …

…ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Dozens of National Guard troops have arrived to help an Alaska fishing town dig out from massive snows that have collapsed roofs, trapped some people in homes, and triggered avalanches.

Cordova is used to snow, but not like this season’s blanketing.

The Guard reported more than 18 feet of snow has fallen in the past weeks, although the National Weather Service did not immediately have a measurement.

“There’s nowhere to go with the snow because it’s piled up so high,” said Wendy Rainney, who owns the Orca Adventure Lodge. A storage building for the lodge — which offers fishing trips, hiking, kayaking and glacier tours — partially collapsed under the weight of the snow, she said.

“This is more quantity than can be handled.”

Officials said at least three buildings have collapsed or partially collapsed and six homes are deemed severely stressed by heavy wet snow.

The city has set up a shelter at a local recreation center, but said people leaving homes in avalanche-risky areas have been staying with other residents. Cordova spokesman Allen Marquette said the town also was ready to set up a pet shelter if necessary.

The town issued a disaster proclamation last week after three weeks of relentless snow overwhelmed local crews working around the clock and filled snow dump sites.

“We had no alternative but to declare an emergency,” Cordova Mayor Jim Kallander said. “It became a life-safety issue.”

Responders said Sunday that rain fell overnight, making for a slippery, treacherous mess in the Prince William Sound community of 2,000 year-round residents. The region has been pummeled by snow, but Cordova is of particular concern because there is no road access to the town, only boat and plane passage, said Maj. Gen. Thomas Katkus, adjutant general of the Alaska National Guard.

There have been no reported injuries, but bad weather has prevented the Guard from flying to the town, 150 miles southeast of Anchorage.

More than 70 Guard members arrived in Cordova via state ferry Sunday. About 50 of them will help clear roofs, roads, boats. The rest will provide other assistance. Three state emergency workers were already in town to help with emergency response planning. The state also is working on bringing in more heavy equipment to Cordova.

Katkus said Guard members will be on hand for up to two weeks. “This is an ongoing operation,” he told reporters Sunday.

An avalanche brought snow and debris down on a section of the Copper River Highway, the 12-mile link from the town to the local airport. State transportation officials said a secondary road was opened to two-lane traffic while crews cleared the highway Sunday.

Another storm that started Saturday also brought rain, which soaked into the snow, weighing it down.

Classes will begin later than usual Monday, but officials said students should go only if parents are comfortable with them venturing out.

Some roads have been cleared, but officials say residents also are being creative, traveling on foot and by skis and snowshoes.

The National Weather Service said the snow depth at the airport measured 59 inches before the rain fell, weighing the level down to 47 inches. Monday is supposed to be clear before another system moves in Tuesday, bringing more snow and rain, as well as winds as strong as 40 mph.

“This break in the weather is very critical and very fortunate,” meteorologist Don Moore said.

TRANS] 120105 Popular Group JYJ, “Will Not Be Appearing At Disaster Relief Event” — Tickets Already Sold At High Prices, Calls Of “Fraud” by Therarasaurus   Jan 5, 2012

(T/N: Before you freak out, please understand that this is most likely a case of fraud, which means that JYJ’s name was just abused in this situation)

In relation to the “Tohoku Earthquake 1st Year Anniversary Charity Party” which advertised in the Nikkei newspapers that “Popular Korean group JYJ will be appearing,” JYJ’s management company C-JeS Entertainment announced on 4 January that “JYJ will not be appearing at this event.”

JYJ consists of 3 of the 5 members in the popular Korean group Tohoshinki. Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun and Kim Junsu left the group in 2009, and (JYJ) has been popular not only in Japan and Korea but in other countries as well.

The event organizers “Earth Project Kizuna Committee” advertised on the evening edition of the Nikkei newspaper on 22 December 2011 that “A Tohoku Earthquake 1st Year Anniversary Charity Party will be held on 21 March, and JYJ will be performing.”

In the advertisement, the event’s price was 100,000yen for round table VIP seats , 50,000 yen for round table S seats and 30,000yen for standing-dining, high prices for a party. They have already started to accept payment, and it can be seen that quite a few fans have already paid for these tickets.

However, with the sudden revelation that JYJ, who were the key point of the party, were not appearing, fans have been crying out that, “This is a fraud” and “This is unforgivable” non-stop.

In this newspaper ad,

1) It was stated that this event was “Produced by : Tokyo International Music Secretariat Office” – A organization that doesn’t exist.
2) The event venue was stated as “A hotel within Tokyo” with the name not clearly specified.
3) The contact email address (“Nifty”) was a personal address

and other “suspicious” details were included, and when the advertisement was first placed, many fans had voiced their suspicions.

Furthermore, the organizer “Earth Project Kizuna Committee’s” homepage (http://earthconcert-kizuna.com) has been locked down since the end of last year, and the contact number suspended, a situation where no one can be found.

It is unclear whether this event was meant to be a fraud right from the beginning, or if this “Earth Project Kizuna Committee” and JYJ’s management agency had prior discussions.

However, if customers who have already paid the money were to report this case to the police, it cannot be denied that criminal charges will possibly be pressed, and the confusion that surrounds this party continues.

111219 North Korea Mourns Dead Leader Son Hailed As Successor

North Korea Mourns Dead Leader, Son Hailed As “Great Successor”

ReutersBy David Chance and Jack Kim | Reuters – 29 mins ago

SEOUL (Reuters) – North Koreans poured into the streets on Monday to mourn the death of iron leader Kim Jong-il as state media hailed his untested son as the “Great Successor” of the reclusive state whose atomic weapons ambitions are a major threat to the region.

Earlier a tearful North Korean television announcer, dressed in black and her voice quavering, said the 69-year old ruler died on Saturday of “physical and mental over-work” on a train on his way to give field guidance — advice dispensed by the “Dear Leader” on trips to factories, farms and the military.

Security concerns over the hermit state, that in 2010 shelled civilians on a South Korean island and is blamed for the sinking of one of its warships earlier that year, were heightened after Seoul said the North had test-fired a short range missile prior to the announcement of Kim’s death.

It was the first known launch since June.

North Korea’s official KCNA news agency lauded Kim’s youngest son, Kim Jong-un as “the outstanding leader of our party, army and people”.

“We have esteemed comrade Kim Jong-un,” KCNA led a dispatch that said North Koreans from all walks of life are in utter despair but were finding comfort in the “absolute surety that the leadership of Comrade Kim Jong-un will lead and succeed the great task of revolutionary enterprise.”

But there was uncertainty about how much support the third generation of the North’s ruling dynasty has among the ruling elite, especially in the military, and worry he might need a military show of strength to help establish his credentials.

“Kim Jong-un is a pale reflection of his father and grandfather. He has not had the decades of grooming and securing of a power base that Jong-il enjoyed before assuming control from his father,” said Bruce Klingner, an Asia policy analyst at the Heritage Foundation in Washington.

“(He) may feel it necessary in the future to precipitate a crisis to prove his mettle to other senior leaders or deflect attention from the regime’s failings.”

Video from Chinese state television showed residents weeping in the North Korean capital Pyongyang. KCNA reported people were “writhing in pain” from the loss of the man who in 1994 assumed the leadership of the totalitarian state from his father Kim Il-sung, the North’s first, and officially eternal, president.

Large crowds were gathering at a massive memorial of Kim’s father and state founder Kim Il-sung in central Pyongyang mourning the death of the “Dear Leader.” Kim will be laid to rest next to his father, KCNA said.

The funeral of Kim, turned into a demi-god by his propaganda machine, will be held on December 28.

News of the death of the man whose push to build a nuclear arsenal left the North heavily sanctioned and internationally isolated, triggered immediate nervousness in the region, with South Korea stepping up its military alert.

China, the North’s neighbor and only powerful ally, said it was confident the North would remain united and that the two countries would maintain their relationship.

“We were distressed to learn of the unfortunate passing of (Kim) … and we express our grief about this and extend our condolences to the people of North Korea,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu was quoted by Xinhua news agency as saying.

“We are confident the North Korean people will be able to turn their anguish into strength and unify as one,” he said.

While his father had 20 years as official heir, Kim Jong-un only became successor by taking on official titles last year, months after Kim Jong-il suffered a stroke around August 2008.

He takes over a hermit state whose economy has been ravaged by decades of mismanagement under Kim Jong-il, who only briefly flirted with economic reform, preferring to stick with central planning and the brutal crushing of any opposition.

Under Kim Jong-il’s rule, an estimated 1 million North Koreans died during famine in the 1990s. Even with good harvests, the state cannot feed its 25 million people.

Little is known of Jong-un, who is believed to be in his late 20s, studied for a short time at a school in Switzerland.

KCNA said Kim Jong-il died on Saturday after “an advanced acute myocardial infarction, complicated with a serious heart shock”.

South Korea, still technically at war with the North, placed its troops and all government workers on emergency alert, but said there were no signs of any unusual North Korean troop movements.

The United States said it was committed to stability on the Korean peninsula as well as to its allies. There are some 28,000 U.S. troops on the divided peninsula. Across the heavily armed border, the North maintains an estimated 1 million troops, one of the world’s largest standing armies.

Japan, too, said it was watching developments closely.

“We hope this sudden event does not have an adverse effect on the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura told a news conference after a hastily called ministerial meeting on security.

SHARES FALL

The fear of what might happen next in North Korea unsettled financial markets, with Asian shares and U.S. index futures falling. South Korean stocks tumbled as much as 5 percent, and the U.S. dollar gained. The Korean won fell 1.8 percent.

Kim Jong-un was at the head of a long list of officials making up the funeral committee, indicating he would lead it, and a key sign that he had taken, or been given, charge.

Zhu Feng, Professor of International Relations at Peking University, said it was clear the mechanism for transition was in place and working.

“The issue of primary concern now is not whether North Korea will maintain political stability, but what will be the nature of the new political leadership, and what policies will it pursue at home and abroad.

“In the short-term, there won’t be new policies, only a stressing of policy stability and continuity. So soon after Kim Jong-il has died, no leader will dare say that an alternative policy course is needed,” Zhu said.

But Chung Young-Tae at the Korea Institute of National Unification said there was “a big possibility that a power struggle may happen.”

UNCHALLENGED HEAD

Kim Jong-il also promoted his sister and her husband, Jang Song-thaek, to important political and military posts, creating a powerful triumvirate.

Chang is seen as effective regent for the younger Kim. He holds a top position in the powerful Worker’s Party providing some balance to the generals who have been seen as more hardline in pushing the North to develop an atomic arsenal.

Earlier this decade, Chang was forced into exile for what is thought to have been conflict over his push for economic reform.

Experts say Jong-un has the intelligence and leadership skills that make him suitable to succeed his father. He is also reported to have a ruthless streak that analysts say he would need to rule North Korea.

REGIONAL THREAT

North Korea, which tested a nuclear device in 2006 and again in May 2009, is seen as one of the greatest threats to regional security.

Last year, the secretive North unveiled a uranium enrichment facility, giving it a second route to make an atomic bomb along with its plutonium program.

Victor Cha, a Korea expert with the Center for Strategic and International Studies think-tank in Washington, said communication between China, the United States and South Korea was vital.

“Because these are the three key players when it comes to instability in North Korea. And the Chinese have been reluctant to have any conversations on this,” he said.

“Now the situation really calls for it. It will be interesting to see how much the Chinese will be willing to have some sort of discussion.”

Southern California Braces For More Extreme Wind Storm

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Tens of thousands of Southern California residents remained without power on Sunday as officials warned that dangerously high winds would return to the region in the evening.

Power company Southern California Edison still had 49,874 customers without power as of Sunday morning due to the “near hurricane force winds” of recent days, according to spokeswoman Mashi Nyssen.

Wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour through area mountain passes and canyons were expected to begin again late Sunday and last through early Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

The winds will create “critical” conditions that will pose an “extreme fire danger” to the area, the NWS said.

Unusually powerful winds first began striking the Los Angeles region on Wednesday in a storm that raised concern about potential wildfires igniting and spreading at lightening speed.

Wind gusts of up to 45 miles per hour were reported close to the metropolis over the weekend.

In the city of Los Angeles, power had been restored to “nearly all” customers who suffered outages in the wind storms, according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

The dry, seasonal gusts that have hit Southern California in recent days are known locally as the Santa Ana winds.

NEWS 111203 JYJ Sent Congratulatory Message To Sejong Law Firm

[News] 111203 JYJ sent congratulatory message to Sejong law firm for its 30th anniversary

On Nov 30th, Sejong has celebrated the 30th anniversary of it founding at Westin Chosun Hotel in Sogong-dong, Seoul. Before this event, famous singers JYJ’s members’ congratulatory video was showed. They said, “During our very difficult time, thanks to Sejong, we were able to start our activities again. Next time, we hope that we can meet as younger brothers and brothers/sisters, not in case of incident/accident.”

“Incident/accident” refers to the fact that they have withdrawn from SM Entertainment’s affiliated group DBSK in 2009 and involved in a legal dispute. On their behalf, Sejong applied for injunction against SM Entertainment, demanded SM to do not interfere in breakaway members’ independent entertainment activities. The Court accepted this application in October 2009. SM Entertainment filed an objection against it but it was dismissed last February. With this winning (T/N: in original article, the journalist used “승소”, a legal term which means “win a case/lawsuit”), JYJ traveled with their concerts around Europe and Asia and have become one of the leaders of “Hallyu Fever”.

In 2009, Sejong formed a team wholly charged for events in entertainment industry, with lawyer Im Sang-hyuk and 5 other lawyers as main axis. On the behalf of JYP Entertainment, this team was responsible of various negotiations with Sony Japan, in order to sign a contract establishing local affiliated company. Early this year, they gave legal advice to DSP Media that was dealing with the declaration of leaving of KARA’s members. They also took charge of contract issue between actor Song Sae-byuk and JY Entertainment.

As entertainment industry has grown with “Hallyu Fever”, it became a trend that many law firms formed a team exclusively responsible for entertainment cases. Yulchon also has Cultural Industry team that engages in advisory activities for entertainment companies including SM Entertainment.

111201 Horses Could Soon Be Slaughtered For Meat in US

Horses Could Soon Be Slaughtered For Meat in US

By JUSTIN JUOZAPAVICIUS | AP – 20 hrs ago

I guess it’s opinion morning, but this is one area in which I have a sensitive spot. Three animals are not in my menu plan–dogs, horses, and cats. I realize that this is a cultural mindset, Americans generally do not eat these animals on a regular basis.  I also realize that horses are large muscle animals, so there is a lot of meat per pound per animal, and, in the past under duress, horses have been eaten in America. According to this article, the meat is targeted for overseas consumption–France, Japan, Europe, and other Asian countries. I guess in theory I can’t argue–it is quality protein. However, when I think about the horses who personally give me joy, I have a hard time imagining them on someone’s dinner table.  Momma Cha

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Horses could soon be butchered in the U.S. for human consumption after Congress quietly lifted a 5-year-old ban on funding horse meat inspections, and activists say slaughterhouses could be up and running in as little as a month.

Slaughter opponents pushed a measure cutting off funding for horse meat inspections through Congress in 2006 after other efforts to pass outright bans on horse slaughter failed in previous years. Congress lifted the ban in a spending bill President Barack Obama signed into law Nov. 18 to keep the government afloat until mid-December.

It did not, however, allocate any new money to pay for horse meat inspections, which opponents claim could cost taxpayers $3 million to $5 million a year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture would have to find the money in its existing budget, which is expected to see more cuts this year as Congress and the White House aim to trim federal spending.

The USDA issued a statement Tuesday saying there are no slaughterhouses in the U.S. that butcher horses for human consumption now, but if one were to open, it would conduct inspections to make sure federal laws were being followed. USDA spokesman Neil Gaffney declined to answer questions beyond what was in the statement.

The last U.S. slaughterhouse that butchered horses closed in 2007 in Illinois, and animal welfare activists warned of massive public outcry in any town where a slaughterhouse may open.

“If plants open up in Oklahoma or Nebraska, you’ll see controversy, litigation, legislative action and basically a very inhospitable environment to operate,” predicted Wayne Pacelle, president and chief executive of The Humane Society of the United States. “Local opposition will emerge and you’ll have tremendous controversy over slaughtering Trigger and Mr. Ed.”

But pro-slaughter activists say the ban had unintended consequences, including an increase in neglect and the abandonment of horses, and that they are scrambling to get a plant going — possibly in Wyoming, North Dakota, Nebraska or Missouri. They estimate a slaughterhouse could open in 30 to 90 days with state approval and eventually as many as 200,000 horses a year could be slaughtered for human consumption. Most of the meat would be shipped to countries in Europe and Asia, including France and Japan.

Dave Duquette, president of the nonprofit, pro-slaughter group United Horsemen, said no state or site has been picked yet but he’s lined up plenty of investors who have expressed interest in financing a processing plant. While the last three slaughterhouses in the U.S. were owned by foreign companies, he said a new plant would be American-owned.

“I have personally probably five to 10 investors that I could call right now if I had a plant ready to go,” said Duquette, who lives in Hermiston, Ore. He added, “If one plant came open in two weeks, I’d have enough money to fund it. I’ve got people who will put up $100,000.”

Sue Wallis, a Wyoming state lawmaker who’s the group’s vice president, said ranchers used to be able to sell horses that were too old or unfit for work to slaughterhouses but now they have to ship them to butchers in Canada and Mexico, where they fetch less than half the price.

The federal ban devastated “an entire sector of animal agriculture for purely sentimental and romantic notions,” she said.

Although there are reports of Americans dining on horse meat a recently as the 1940s, the practice is virtually non-existent in this country, where the animals are treated as beloved pets and iconic symbols of the West.

Lawmakers in California and Illinois have banned the slaughter of horses for human consumption, and more than a dozen states tightly regulate the sale of horse meat.

Federal lawmakers’ lifting of the ban on funding for horse meat inspections came about in part because of the recession, which struck just as slaughtering stopped. A federal report issued in June found that local animal welfare organizations reported a spike in investigations for horse neglect and abandonment since 2007. In Colorado, for example, data showed that investigations for horse neglect and abuse increased more than 60 percent — from 975 in 2005 to almost 1,600 in 2009.

The report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office also determined that about 138,000 horses were transported to Canada and Mexico for slaughter in 2010, nearly the same number that were killed in the U.S. before the ban took effect in 2007. The U.S. has an estimated 9 million horses.

Cheri White Owl, founder of the nonprofit Horse Feathers Equine Rescue in Guthrie, Okla., said she’s seen more horse neglect during the recession. Her group is caring for 33 horses now and can’t accept more.

“A lot of the situation is due to the economy,” she said, “People deciding to pay their mortgage or keep their horse.”

But White Owl worries that if slaughterhouses open, owners will dump their unwanted animals there instead of looking for alternatives, such as animal sanctuaries.

Animal rights groups also argue that slaughtering is a messy, cruel process, and some say it would be kinder for owners to have their horses put to sleep by a veterinarian.

“Euthanasia has always been an option,” Pacelle said. But “if you acquire a horse, you should be a responsible owner and provide lifetime care.”

The fight over horse slaughtering has pitted lawmakers of the same party against each other.

Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., said the poor economy has resulted in “sad cases” of horse abandonment and neglect and lifting the ban will give Americans a shot at regaining lost jobs and making sure sick horses aren’t abandoned or mistreated.

But U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va., is lobbying colleagues to permanently ban horse slaughter because he believes the process is inhumane.

“I am committed to doing everything in my power to prevent the resumption of horse slaughter and will force Congress to debate this important policy in an open, democratic manner at every opportunity,” he said in a statement.
