Album: XIA Tarantallegra
Track: 4
Length: 0:03:50
Lyrics by: Kim Jaejoong
Produced by: Kim Jaejoong
I pause and forget everything for a moment
Just reminiscing the memories that you gave
The flames in my heart that I’ve forgotten
I want you to listen to it
The space in my heart seem to grow narrower
What should I do…I’m sorry but we’re growing further apart
Those precious time (we had), finding other love
I try to erase your scent
CHORUS
Baby even if I found someone new, I can never forget you
Baby you know I can’t forget
Calling you when I’m drunk
Just listen when I say I love you
If you’re thinking of me girl call my name
That’s all that I need
Even if I’m with a another girl
Baby girl Baby girl Baby girl Baby girl
I was too selfish
Had done nothing for you
Feeling sad, I’m just ashamed of myself
Maybe that’s why I’m like this now
I try to make some other excuses by seeing someone new
A happy girl and I…this isn’t it
CHORUS
Baby girl Baby girl Baby girl Baby girl
No matter what happen you will not cry
Its okay there’s no need to blame no more
I will bury in those memories, I won’t forget you
Does that mean anything to you? No gain no gain no gain
Though I don’t need to know your thought
I watched the music video, read the words, and listened to the title track of Xiah Junsu’s new solo album, “Tarantallegra”. I admit that I approached it as a task to ‘endure’ solely because of the hype and teasers that deliberately were made to be unsettling to the minds of the fans. To say that this song, actually this concept, was psychologically promoted to the nth degree would still be an understatement. Phrases used were “are you ready to be shocked”, etc, etc in an effort to “prepare our minds” for the actual imagery and intent of the music video. Some of the imagery in the teasers did not appear in the actual product, for which I am grateful. I tend to dislike mind games and dominance.
You have to ask yourself, “whatis the intention of this music video? After all, we are comfortable with the Xiah Junsu of old–the fresh-faced, button-nosed, energetic person who made us smile, laugh, and love him because he is a consummate actor and showman, but also a sincere human being. He still has this ability, but face it, he is no longer ‘Angel Xiah”. While getting glimpses of the real Xiah Junsu through candid shots of him with the members and individual moments with family and friends, we must also be aware that he dwells inside himself in his own space with his own thoughts and desires that are not typical of everyone around him.
Sylvester LeVay calls him a ‘genius’, as do many others–so let us define exactly what genius means. In Merriam-Webster’s 11th Collegiate Dictionary, the term ‘genius’ has many definitions of which I have chosen the following few as definitive (in my opinion) of Xiah Junsu: ‘A person who influences another for good or bad; a peculiar, distinctive, or identifying character or spirit; a single strongly marked capacity or aptitude; extraordinary intellectual power, especially as manifested in creative activity.
There. I will now state my ‘opinion’ of what “Tarantallegra” truly means. I could be totally wrong, however, I believe that it is a ‘protest song’ stating that modern music in the realm of Junsu’s existence is too controlling, mundane, and limited for him. He feels caught in a web of ‘sameness’ that holds him to a standard of music and interpretation of music as an art form that everyone around him adheres to through necessity. Why? At this moment in time–because it sells.
Junsu is a visionary–he sees things as they can be, not as they are. Potential in music flares out at him and draws him as a spider to its web; as a moth to a flame. [ I choose to emphasize here that this is not Junsu’s stand alone–I believe many artists dwell here daily] Junsu simply goes where others fear to tread.. The imagery in the music video comes through to me as imprisonment and seduction, much like ‘Mirotic’, but the message is entirely different– for in “Tarantellegra’ Junsu is depicted as many-faceted, compelling, vibrant, and potentially able to escape this typical music/lifestyle to do something different.
We cannot ignore Junsu’s ability as a dancer. He is athletic– with a strong, driving force and energy that , yes, surpasses the abilities of many. However, there are those who can perform at this level, also–if they so desire to do so. Example here–the back-up dancers. They cannot be considered background in this video because they play such an integral role in its production. I cannot say that I appeciate all of the imagery and movement depicted, but they help to bring the message across–something new is needed to set the artist free. I, Music, have been captured. I long to be free! I long to be different!
This is where the responsibility manifests. Freedom is not free reign as much as it is free expression. Caution should always be there to entertain but still nourish. This music video is not for children. Children cannot understand its implications, nor should they have to. The viewer who does not perform, write, sing, or dance may not get the full implications, either. I see no blatant sexuallty; I see sensuality, which is more compelling to the mind. Also keep in mind that this was a joint effort. The lyrics to “Tarantallegra’ [embedded in the video] were written by Juno, Junsu’s twin brother, so the words also express something inside of him. The music score is Junsu’s, it has a life of its own.
As I stated earlier in this editorial–these are my opinions alone; my assessment of what this song indicates to me. I love the music, and I understand the lyrics only too well as a singer and songwriter. The imagery is effective, but not necessarily appealing to me in all of it’s aspects, but it is not my work. That is the nature of art–it is a personal expression that manifests itself differently to every viewer and observer. I am reminded of being in ‘Art Appreciation’ class in college many years ago watching underground films that were considered too controversial to present to the masses. “Tarantallegra” in that time-frame would have been an underground video. Times have now changed, and the entertainment industry has also changed. ‘Xia/Xiah’ means ‘Asia’, so I believe that the message Junsu and company is putting forth is that Asia is a varied culture in many ways including her music and ability to interpret music and dance.. As an artist, Junsu enjoys all types of music and dance genres, and I believe that he feels a need to express this. Interestingly, he has chosen an originally Greek, then Italian folk music dance form to present his point. The “bite’ of ‘Tarantallegra’ is music’s compelling, sinuous tentacles that entwine around our personalities and influence our lifestyles. Music and dance are both gifts from God. Use them wisely. Loving You. Momma Cha

[News] 120510 Tickets Sell Out for Kim Jae Joong’s Taiwan Fan Meeting
Tickets for Kim Jae Joong’s Taiwanese fan meeting sold out as soon as they went on sale.
On May 10, Kim’s agency, C-JeS Entertainment, said, “Tickets for Kim’s exclusive fan meeting, which will be held on May 23 at ATT Hall in Taipei, Taiwan, sold out right after they went on sale. We decided to hold a fan meeting to thank Kim’s fans for loving his TV series Protect the Boss.”
Kim will talk about the behind the scene stories for the series. He will also play games with his Chinese fans and sing his songs, including “I’ll Protect You,” which he personally wrote for the series.
Kim sold out his fan meetings in Shanghai and Turkey last year. He also proved his high popularity by being chosen as one of the most searched Hallyu stars on Twitter by a K-pop online site.
A spokesperson for SBS says, “Thanks to the internationally famous Kim, the series is very popular in foreign countries. The series is even been sold to Ukraine for the first time as a Korean TV series. We also felt Kim Jae Joong effect is powerful because he helped the series become the most popular series in Asia.”
Kim is currently shooting MBC’s series Dr. Jin, which will start airing on May 26.
[News] 120508 JYJ’s Kim Jae Joong Appears In Historical Series
JYJ’s Kim Jae Joong is performing hard riding a horse and shooting action scenes for a historical series.
Kim plays the role of an attractive man named Kim Kyung Tak from the Joseon Dynasty in MBC’s new weekend series Dr. Jin, which will begin airing on May 26.
Kim, who is skilled in the military arts and has a sad hidden past, works at the police bureau. In the pictures, which were released on May 8, Kim drew a lot of attention thanks to his strong eyes and splendid appearance.
According to the production crew for the series, since Kim was cast in the series, he has been trying hard to get used to speaking and behaving like a person from the Joseon Dynasty. He is also preparing for the equestrian and action scenes.
The production crew says, “Even though Kim has never appeared on a historical series before, he is performing very well. He surprised the entire crew by looking perfect in the historical costumes. He is trying very hard to portray his character, who is strong and manly. I’m sure he will capture the audience’s hearts.”
The series is based on the Japanese comic book written by Murakami Motoka of the same title. It is about a modern day Korean surgeon, who goes back in time to the Joseon Dynasty in the 1860s, and works there as a doctor.
I had the opportunity to go on Friday to the Symposium at the University of Michigan and attended the seminars (with the exception of the first block since I drove 3 hours and I overslept 30 minutes >~<), including “Of the fans, by the fans, for the fans – the Republic of JYJ” by Professor Seung-Ah Lee of Los Angles City College. As a scholar, the conference as a whole was very informational and looking forward to the book that the university is planning to published within a year that includes the scholarly papers for each speaker, including the one regarding JYJ ;D.
I was also able to meet a fellow JYJ3 member at the conference when we went up to chat with Professor Seung-Ah Lee after her talk 🙂 It was nice meeting you Meaghan (not sure of the spelling, sorry) and too bad you had to go home right after the Second block of presentations. Would have loved to get to meet you even more.
I recorded audio of the talk for those that were unable to attend but are interested in what what was said and typed out an outline below:
Introduction of Speaker
History Of Hallyu
The fans she interviewed. Passion, enthusiasm, and affection towards the members came from all the fans she interviewed.
Who is Dong Shinki?
Artist Contracts in the Korean Music Industries (slave conditions, with no power)
Lawsuit brought by the three members of TVXQ
Unfair treatment continues after the judge ruled in the favor of Jaejoong, Junsu, Yoochun by not being able to appear music charts, programs, etc.
Sites that once supported the original TVXQ converted to only support JYJ.
JYJ today truly continues the legacy of original TVXQ
The Repulic of JYJ – anyone who loves JYJ is a citizenship
The role of the fans is to protect JYJ and have become the fighter of justice.
Sasaengs are illegal immigrants in the Republic of JYJ
Why a Republic of JYJ and not a nation, family or something else? In hopes to highlight the autonomy and democracy of the fandom.
[NOTE: I apologize for the quality of the audio, but the Nam Center for Korean Studies at the University of Michigan confirmed that the seminar will be recorded. The video recording of the event will be posted on the University Web Site. Once it has been posted, I will update everyone ]
Also, University of Michigan Professor Youngju Ryu’s presentation was entitled “How a Podcast Started a Revolution: New Media and Electoral Politics in South Korea” and said that she thought that her presentation was a little out of place compared to the other speakers since it was not really about Hallyu so decided to wear something that represented the Hallyu wave. She wore an official JYJ t-shirt she purchased at the 2011 Busan concert. Me and my friends cheered. \(^_^)/ During the 4th and final block, my whole roll was JYJ fans, 3 friends I came with, the JYJ presenter, Professor Seung-Ah Lee, and Professor Ryu.
Several presentations had images of the trio since their debut in 2003. I ended the night by stopping at Seoul Street in Ann Arbor with my group. If anyone is in the area I really recommend. My friend from South Korea said it tasted authentic. We ended up buying Bibimbap, Kimbap, Dukboki, Fried Rice, Budae Jigae and Kimchi! So nommie…

The celebrity soccer team made up of Korean entertainers called FC Men from Soo Won Blue Wings and the celebrity soccer team made up of Japanese entertainers called FC GEININ held a charity soccer game to help recovery efforts in east Japan, the region severely impacted by the major earthquake last year, at Tokyo National Stadium on April 28, and around 40,000 audience members glowed with enthusiasm while watching the game.
The soccer game was designed to remember the earthquake to mark its one year anniversary. A special performance by Juno (Kim Joon Ho), who is the twin brother of Kim Joon Soo of JYJ, and the five member group M.E.N led to an enthusiastic atmosphere before the game.
The soccer players from both teams appeared on the field and listened to both countries’ national anthems. The leader of FC MEN, Kim Joon Soo of JYJ, and actor Yoon Sang Hyun donated 20 million yen to Sakurai, the mayor of the city of Minamisoma in Fukushima Prefecture, which suffered the most severe damage from the major earthquake. Kim Joon Soo received a letter of appreciation from Nakasone, the former Japanese prime minister and the chairman of the Korea and Japan Collaboration Committee, for helping the revival of the region. Kim Joon Soo said before the game, “I am glad that I can participate in this meaningful event.” And Yoon Sang Hyun said, “It is my honor to become a coach of the Korean soccer team, and I will definitely lead this game to victory.”
FC MEN gave up the opening goal to the Japanese team, but the first half finished in a tie as the Japanese team scored an own goal. The two teams played a tight game in the second half, and the audience went wild while watching the game. FC MEN led the game with better physical conditioning and it was expected to win the game with the fourth goal by Shin Ki Hyun at the 39th minute of the second half, but the game became tied again as the Japanese team scored one more goal. The game looked likely to be tied, but Kim Joon Soo scored the fifth goal after receiving a pass from actor Lee Wan right before the game finished. The Korea celebrity soccer team won by a score of 5 to 4.
The 40,000 audience members cheered both teams with loud applause while watching the game. Kim Joon Soo, who ran the whole game without taking a rest for his fans, said, “I felt pressure as the Japanese team was too strong, but I am glad that we finally won the game. I thank our team members’ great effort.”
In addition, the players of FC MEN including Juno, Lee Wan, and Seo Ji Seok ran around the field and presented soccer balls to the audience who rooted for the two teams.
