There are many successful businessmen, politicians, athletes and celebrities who are part of the Myongji University alumni community. Making their mark, not only in Korea, but throughout the whole world, the alumni of Myongji University take their Myongji outgoing spirit and passion to dream bigger dreams, and they never stop in their efforts to make their dreams a reality. We met with U-Know Yunho (Jung Yunho) of TVXQ, the founders of the Hallyu Boom, KBS camera director Hong Sung Joon who won the Best Korean Broadcast Award, Baek Hui Sung, the first Asian to win France’s ‘Paul Maymont Award’, and Lee Jung Woon, the creator of Anipang. See how these young and talented Myongji alumni have created an amazing future for themselves.
Hallyu Boom Boom! ‘Five Dome Tour concert in Japan’
Alumni Jung Yunho (TVXQ’s U-Know Yunho, Movie-Musical Major, Class of ’11)
“If you have a positive mind and work hard in your preparation and actions, you will be met with good results.”
Q. Please introduce yourself to our future and current Myongji University students and tell us what you’ve been up to.
A. Hello. This is TVXQ’s U-Know Yunho. Our Five Dome Tour in Japan began at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama on the 27th of April. Our last concerts in Japan were held from the 15th till the 17th of May at Tokyo Dome. Many Japanese fans came to our concert, so I was able to pour all of my passion into my performances. I believe that I was able to end the tour in success because of the attention and support given to us from Myongji University alumni and our fans.
Q. Please tell us about your future plans.
A. In July, we’ll be continuing our world tour in North and South America, and China. In August, we’ll be the first non-Japanese artistes to perform in Japan’s Nissan Stadium, the stage of dreams. This is something I feel every time I stand on stage for a concert, but the fact that our concerts give hope to so many people makes me feel so emotional. I believe that the success we’ve experienced till now is all thanks to the support of my fellow Myongji University alumni and the love of our fans. I hope to see you all soon as a great performer and a great actor.
Q. Do you have any advice for future and current Myongji University students?
A. I believe that the things we see and learn in school help us greatly in our transition to society. I think that you need to have the determination to see things through till the very end, no matter what you start, if you want good results. No matter what happens, if you have a positive mind and work hard in your preparation and actions, you will be met with good results. Most of all, you have to believe in yourself. To my future and current Myongji University juniors, always believe in yourselves and be willing to take on new challenges.

It has been found that JYJ’s Kim Junsu and Kim Jaejoong will be enlisting in the military this year.
Multiple sources in the K-pop industry have stated that the two singers are currently deciding on a date ahead of their military enlistment. In Kim Jaejoong’s case, he has already been given multiple draft notices, but has pushed back his enlistment due to reasons such as long periods of time spent overseas. However, it has become difficult for him to push back his enlistment any further.
A representative of the industry stated, “He is currently deciding on an enlistment date with his agency due to issues surrounding frequent overseas concerts and scheduled activities,” and “From what I know, he either plans to go near the end of this year, or next January to February at the latest.”
Kim Junsu, who received a second grade active duty designation, is also in discussions about his enlistment date.
A representative stated, “Taking into consideration the current controversy surrounding celebrity soldiers, he would like to enlist as a regular solider.” He continued to add, “The enlistment of male celebrities has always been a sensitive topic, and both singers are of the opinion to go the regular track and avoid the criticism that follows a shaky celebrity enlistment. They can’t help but be cautious as their status as top stars will make their enlistment a hot topic.”
Born in 1986 and 1987 respectively, Kim Jaejoong and Kim Junsu still have a bit of leeway age-wise in pushing back their enlistment, but both have already pushed it back numerous times. All three members of the group became the center of spotlight when they visited the Office of Military Manpower Administration for their physical checkups on the 14th of February, 2011. Kim Jaejoong’s draft notice set his enlistment for September, 2011 but was reported to have been pushed back to the following year. Now, the singer can’t help but be aware of public sentiment surrounding celebrity enlistments.
A representative of C-JeS stated, “All three members of JYJ plan to enlist in the military, like every other male in Korea.” However, he did not say much on when exactly the members would be enlisting.
Meanwhile, JYJ’s other member Park Yoochun has received a fourth grade reservist duty designation due to his asthma. There is no news yet on when Park Yoochun plans to enlist in the military.

[T/N: A few clarifications on military service for those who are worried.
– What is the grade system?
The grade system is one that designates men enlisting in the military to certain ‘grades’, depending on their physical state. Grade 1 is the highest ranking you can receive and a person is docked to lower grades based on physical attributes such as poor eyesight, high blood pressure, being underweight or any physical illnesses. Grade 1~3 are assigned to active duty, Grade 4 is assigned to reservist duty and so on (I omitted the rest since they don’t apply to JYJ)
-What does active duty mean in Korea?
Active duty in Korea doesn’t mean anything overseas (for the most part). This usually means the initial training/boot camp period + staying at a base in Korea for the rest of the enlistment. Soldiers get holidays once in a while to leave the base and visit family and friends, which is why it’s not unusual to see see people in uniform in the subway or buses.
-How long is the enlistment period?
1. Army/Marine – 1 year 9 months
2. Navy – 1 year 11 months
3. Air Force – 2 years
Each person can choose which he sector in the military he would like to go to.
-Is pushing back your military enlistment normal?
Yes! Regular people, not just celebrities, push back their enlistment for various reasons. The most used case is that Koreans who are studying overseas can push back their enlistment date in order to further their studies. In the case of celebrities, most push their enlistment date back till their late 20s or early 30s so it isn’t unusual for JYJ to have done so as well.
Most regular people just decide to go early (first or second year of university) so that it doesn’t hinder them in their upperclassmen years when they’re trying to find jobs and graduate. (My guy friends are all disappearing one by one ;___;)
Hope this helps a little!]

Kim Junsu (XIA) is at the center of the spotlight for revealing the process behind the creation of his song ‘Isn’t This Song Funny’.
Kim Junsu held a showcase at the UNIQLO AX Hall on the 15th to commemorate the release of his second solo album ‘Incredible’.
During the press conference that was held after the showcase, Kim Junsu talked about his song ‘Isn’t This Song Funny’ and had everyone laughing when he said, “The song was done and all it needed was a title. But I found that nothing really worked as well as ‘Isn’t This Song Funny”. The staff members were at a loss for words when I told them about how I had chosen the title of the song.”
He continued to say, “When I was writing the lyrics, I tried to express what I had always wanted to say in a funny way. I left out any heavy material like love stories and looked back on things I had written on my Twitter account for my inspiration,” and “It’s a song that I wrote as a present to my fans.”
He smiled and said, “It’s supposed to be a bonus track so I was surprised to see how popular it is.”
Netizens who heard this left comments such as, “Isn’t This Song Funny, even the behind-the-scenes story is funny”, “Isn’t This Song Funny, the bonus tracks are always the jewel in any album,” and “Kim Junsu must not like writing about serious things.”
Meanwhile, ‘Isn’t This Song Funny’ has been drawing much attention for expressing the various happenings that Kim Junsu faced as a solo singer. A more fun and exciting aspect has been added with Boom’s narration.

XIA (Junsu) has returned with an album full of challenges.
IA (Kim Junsu) held a showcase at the UNIQLO AX Hall on the 15th to commemorate the release of his second solo album ‘Incredible’.
It’s been a year since he last made an appearance as solo singer ‘XIA’, and not a member of JYJ. Although he has been busy as a musical actor, he put all his effort into preparing his latest album, and did not disappoint fans as he has come back as a more mature singer.
During the press conference that was held after the showcase, Kim Junsu said, “I tried to put as many different genres as possible in this album. I only started choosing songs after I decided which genres I wanted in my album, and I paid much more attention in my song selection process this year.”
His vocal skills have changed drastically as well. Regarding this, Kim Junsu said, “I can’t say that my time as a musical actor hasn’t influenced the way I sing at all, but I tried very hard to find the perfect balance. I tried to find what worked best for each song, and applied that to my music, ” and “I left it up to the feel of the song.”
Kim Junsu emphasized, “This album was a great challenge for me. I wanted to discover a new side of me through this album.”
He expressed his hesitation of filling the majority of the album with his own compositions. He said, “When artistes compose their own music, the good thing is that they are able to put all of their strengths into one song. But you might also get yourself stuck in one mould,” and “Although I try to branch out when I write music, the quality of my album might drop if I become too greedy about writing and singing my own songs. I focused most on choosing the best songs.”
The showcase that was held on the same day was aired live on MelonTV. Kim Junsu performed a total of four songs, ‘Tarantallegra’, ’11 o’clock’, ‘I’m Sorry’ and ‘Incredible’, to perfect his successful comeback.
Starting on the 20th in Bangkok, Thailand, Kim Junsu will set off on his world tour that will take him to Shanghai, China on the 20th, Seoul on the 3rd and 4th of August, and Busan on the 10th and 11th of August.
