TVXQâs Max Changmin, who has recently risen as the new ace of variety shows, will continue his winning streak into the drama industry. Max Changmin is currently in talks to play the leading role in the drama âFor Mâ. This will be his first drama industry comeback in two years since his role in the 2011 SBS drama âParadise Ranchâ.
âFor Mâ is a remake of the 2007 movie âMâ, which starred Kang Dong Won and Lee Yeon Hee. It is a 4-episode fantasy melodrama that depicts the memories of a first love that changes the destiny of a man and a woman. The female lead has not been decided on yet.
Max Changmin is set to play the role of webtoon artist Min Woo in the drama. Though he is a handsome webtoon artist at the peak of his popularity, he is a damaged soul who is sensitive, selfish and suffers from an inferiority complex.
Max Changmin recently joined U-Know Yunho to hold the successful finale of the âTVXQ LIVE TOUR 2013 ~TIME~â at the Nissan Stadium in Yokohama, Japan. The TVXQ effect translated into an airing contract for KBS 2TVâs âOur Neighborhoodâs Master of Variety and Sportsâ, which the singer stars in as a regular. âFor Mâ is expected to be the center of attention amongst fans all over the world in places such as China, Hong Kong, the USA and Europe.
Max Changmin will begin filming for the drama in mid-September and the drama is expected to air at the end of the year. It has not been decided yet which channel will pick up the drama.

With contents such as dramas and movies being exported to other countries along with the K-pop craze, variety shows are rapidly rising as the money makers of broadcasting companies.
KBS2â˛s âOur Neighborhoodâs Master of Variety and Sportsâ recently became a hot topic for selling its first 24 episodes to Japan in only four months since starting the show.
Itâs common for the format of popular Korean variety shows and the shows themselves, such as MBCâs âI Am a Singerâ SBSâ âK-pop Starâ and Mnetâs âSuperstarKâ to be exported overseas. However, it usually takes at least a year and a half after the show ends for this to take place. This is because it isnât easy to overcome the language barrier and make people of other nationalities and cultures laugh.
Even popular shows such as MBCâs âWe Got Marriedâ and SBSâ âWe Like Sunday â Running Manâ were exported only after they scored high viewership ratings in Korea.
Our Neighborhoodâs Masterâ has only aired 20 episodes but is already set to export its first 24 episodes, which include episodes from September that have not aired yet, to Japan.
Multiple representatives of the broadcasting industry stated, âEver since the show started airing, âOur Neighborhoodâs Masterâ has been receiving many offers from Japanese broadcasting companies. We have been notified that an exportation contract has been signed at a high price with Digi Kore. We believe such a contract was possible because of TVXQâs Max Changmin, who is an MC of the show.â
Though many dramas starring Hallyu stars are sold overseas before they air, it is rare for a variety show to be exported before or during the showâs airing. It is extremely rare for a show to be sold overseas as early as âOur Neighborhoodâs Masterâ was.
Regarding the fact that the variety was sold overseas in only four months, many representatives of the entertainment sector stated, âIt proves that Hallyu stars have an effect on both dramas and variety shows now.â
A representative of the broadcasting industry stated, âSingers donât have many places to promote themselves, other than music programs. This is also a reason why many singers have become actors, with the rise in popularity of Korean dramas. We believe that the overseas exportation of variety shows starring K-pop idol stars and Hallyu stars will become more active. We believe that singers and actors will focus more on appearing on variety shows in the future.â
This is a win-win situation for broadcasting companies as well. Exporting variety shows leaves them with a lot of profit because the production costs are far lower than that of a drama. A representative stated, âMost variety shows are produced by the broadcasting companies, and since there are usually a maximum of ten celebrities in one episode, the production costs are on the cheaper side. If they are exported overseas like dramas, it will be a good source of profit for broadcasting companies.â

What should we think about idol groups branching out into other fields?
Other than their main job of singing, more and more idol members are starting to branch about into acting, variety shows and emceeing. On top of working on their singing and dancing skills as trainees, idols have been coached in languages, acting and eloquence, with special talents to back them up. In a way, itâs expected of these idols to branch out and try out other fields. However, there is a difference in how idols are viewed in each individual field.
âśVariety Shows : Ensuring viewership âTwo thumbs upâ
The number of idols appearing on variety shows has rapidly increased recently. In the past, idols would appear on any and every program when they were rookies, and then begin to choose only the best programs once they became popular, but itâs different these days. More and more idols are appearing in documentary-form variety shows and quiz shows, which usually have lower viewership ratings. This is because of the ranking system of music programs. Because the number of broadcasted appearances plays a big role in the ranking of music programs, idols have to get their faces out in the public as much as possible. One representative stated, âNo matter how popular an idol is, itâs hard to get first place if they donât appear on TV often. The situationâs a little better on SBSâ âInkigayoâ and MBCâs âShow! Music Coreâ because votes from fans has a greater influence on rankings, but because fan participation is low in KBS2â˛s âMusic Bankâ, an idol group can rank higher if they appear on TV more often. Therefore, idols should appear on any program they can, no matter how small it is.â
This desperation means that idol groups do their absolute best when they appear on variety shows. And theyâre also great for promoting the shows. In the case of popular idol groups, their dark pasts or small happenings between the members become a hot topic. Even rookie groups become the center of attention if they talk about suitors, their love lives, plastic surgery and dieting. Itâs a win-win situation for everyone and idols can appear on any kind of variety show out there, whether it be education, sports or talk shows. Good examples of this are the idol special of MBCâs âInfinite Challengeâ, the diving project of SBSâ âBarefooted Friendsâ, MBCâs âIdol Track and Field Competitionâ and KBS2â˛s âDream Team Season 2â˛. Not only can they apply themselves to a diverse number of shows, but they can also ensure higher viewership ratings, thanks to the support of their fans, meaning that idols are welcomed with open arms in the variety sector.
âśActing : They know what theyâre doing~!
Most idols branch out into the acting industry with countless idols are currently active as âacting-dolsâ. Though viewers are split on their opinions on such idols, production companies prefer to work with them. Not only do they ask for less money than top-class actors, but they also bring a rippling effect with them. With idols riding the Hallyu Wave and gaining popularity overseas, more and more of their productions are being exported overseas with them. Meaning that output greatly outweighs the initial input. Though they were at the center of controversies surrounding their lack of acting skills in the past, more and more idols these days make their debut with an acting career already planned out, acting as a positive for them as it means that their acting skills rival that of most actors. Even the movie industry, which used to be cautious about using idols in their work, have changed their tune. With more productions hiring idols for major and minor characters, such as âNoblesseâ (Girlsâ Generationâs Yuri, Dalshabetâs Ah Young), âLawyerâ (ZE:Aâs Lim Shi Wan), and âAlumniâ (Big Bangâs TOP), the industry seems to be moving towards a pro-idol opinion. A representative stated, âIdols are better at expressions and acting than most people think. Theyâre more used to the camera and look more natural than rookies who havenât proven their talents yet. Theyâre able to catch on quickly to the overall feel and atmosphere of their productions. The fact that there arenât that many popular actors who can take on the roles of characters in their early twenties becomes a great opportunity for idols. Even if productions featuring idols donât do well in Korea, they are usually exported to Japan or Chinese-speaking countries. More and more scripts are being sent to idols these days, and some production companies are even creating high teen dramas in order to bring in idol stars to their works.â
âśMusicals : Idols arenât that great
The musical industry is also one that many idols are flocking to. It is the best field for idols to go to as they can already sing and dance at the same time. However, the reception has been quite chilly. The general consensus is that production companies hesitate in hiring idols, except JYJâs Kim Junsu.
Many representatives chose the idolsâ insincere attitude as the most important factor. There are times when they do not attend rehearsals due to overseas activities, and many of them either donât show up or show up late to rehearsals with the excuse of packed schedules. Because of this, the actors are unable to connect with each other and this clearly shows on stage. High salaries are also an issue. A representative stated, âThough Kim Junsu receives 15 million Won per show, heâs worth that amount. He has such a sincere attitude towards his work that everyone, from his fellow cast members to the staff, like him. On the other hand, most idols arenât like him but still receive salaries of 8 to 9 million Won. The problem is that they donât deliver as much as they should,â and âBecause musicals are created in a poor environment, production costs are limited, and most of it ends up going to the idols. That means that musicals have to reduce costs in other areas, and the people who usually suffer because of this is the ensemble. Ensembles are also ranked in talent and experience, and this means that musicals arenât able to hire good ensembles. Not only do idols not deliver when theyâre on stage, but the ensembles arenât that great either, so itâs no wonder that some musicals end up failing.â Itâs impossible for idols to receive positive reviews when they donât even have strong ticket power to salvage the situation. Another representative stated, âNo idol singer, except for Kim Junsu, has enough ticket power to succeed. At first, many musicals hired them based on their popularity in the music industry. But because the age range of most idol fanbases are concentrated in the teens and early 20s, there is a limit in the number of people who can buy expensive musical tickets. 90% of musicals that performed in big venues, putting their faith in the fandoms of idols, have suffered losses. With ticket power failing as well, the number of musicals hiring idols has decreased.â

âOur Neighborhoodâs Master of Variety and Sportsâ is becoming the new blue chip of KBS variety shows.
According to Nielsen Korea, the episode of KBS 2TVâs variety show âOur Neighborhoodâs Master of Variety and Sportsâ that aired on the 20th scored a nationwide viewership of 8.4%. This is a 0.9% rise from last weekâs episode (7.5%). It is slowly but surely gaining popularity.
This dayâs episode followed the badminton match between the celebrity team and the Busan Doogu-dong team.
TVXQâs Max Changmin and actor Lee Jong Soo were the last pair to play, and it must have been because of the pressure, but they were unable to score a single point till they had to take a time out. The pair lost and the Busan Doogu-dong team clinched an overall victory.
Max Changmin said, âI wasnât in the best of conditions because I arrived back in Korea this morning, so I wasnât in the right head space. I think saying that it was because I was suffering from jet lag is just an excuse. Although I feel sad about losing this match, I did my best. I would to thank all the other players for practicing late into the night.â
Meanwhile, MBCâs âPD Notebookâ scored a 5.0% viewership while SBSâ âHwashinâ scored a 5.2% viewership.

72,000 pearl red fanlights, a clock-shaped stage, a concert with the concept of âtimeâ, the first non-Japanese singersâŚ
Hallyu duo âTVXQâ held the finale of their âTVXQ LIVE TOUR 2013 ~TIME~â Five Dome tour at the Nissan Stadium in Yokohama, Japan and it was a blockbuster performance of epic size, concept and meaning.
The Nissan Stadium is a concert venue that can hold up to 72,000 people. Other than the seats needed to set up lighting and equipment, every single seat in the entire venue was filled, a rare sight to see in such a large scale.
Starting off with âFATEDâ, a track from their latest Japanese album âTIMEâ, which was released in March, the concert was filled with the sounds of songs such as âI Donât Knowâ, âOne More Thingâ and âY3Kâ. The concept of âTimeâ shined through in their concert. The main stage, which was 95m long and 22m high, was decorated with mechanical parts that looked like they were once part of a clock. At both ends of the stage stood time capsule-shaped equipment that helped U-Know Yunho (27) and Max Changmin (25) move around the stage. The entire experience felt like traveling through time.
The lighting effects that used the glow-in-the-dark watches that had been distributed to all 72,000 fans was a highlight of the show. Used once dusk settled in the sky and TVXQ began singing âHeart, Mind & Soulâ, the watches changed the color of the fansâ fanlights from pearl red (the color that represents TVXQ) to other colors and made the audience a part of the concert. The colors were controlled using laptops and wireless signals.
These watches were similar to the LED bracelets that alternative rock band âColdplayâ used when performing as âXylobandâ. The characteristic of these watches is that they give a sense of uniformity and extravagance. The ultimate highlight of the concert was when the second to fourth floors of the seats were controlled separately to create the letters âWe Are TVXQâ.
The Nissan Stadium, which also hosted the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, has been graced by legendary Japanese singers such as X-Japan, LâArc~en~Ciel, SMAP and EXILE. Having already held arena and dome tours, TVXQ have become the first non-Japanese singers to hold a concert in the venue, proving yet again how popular they are in Japan.
Though it was a concept with an amazing size, concept and meaning, it would have been too much of a stretch had it not been for the two membersâ strong foundation. U-Know Yunhoâs dance skills and Max Changminâs vocal talent exuded a masculine charm, and the duo had their fans laughing with small talk and imitations of celebrities and the animation âAttack on Titanâ.
U-Know Yunho and Max Changminâs teamwork shined through in songs such as âCatch Meâ and âWhyâ, the last song of the concert and the first song of their encore. Their ability to run around the main stage and the 120m long extended stages on the side for three and a half hours was quite surprising. The 120m long stages also became the route that the membersâ 3m long monorails traveled around.
The two members were joined by a five-man band that featured percussionist Fukugana Matsuo and drummer Hanato Detsuya, a 20-member dance crew and 100 backup dancers.
If TVXQâs previous concerts focused on creating awe-inspiring performances for the members, tonightâs performance focused more on being a âshowâ with many sights to see. A good example of this is the fireworks show that took place when the encore performance came to an end with âSomebody to Loveâ. Though most of the attendees had been women in the past, many men and families could be seen in the crowd during tonightâs concert.
Atsushi Abe (42), who was at the concert with his wife Mana Abe (42), said, âThe reason why I like TVXQ is because theyâre cute, amazing, and can sing and dance,â and âAt first, I began liking them because I was influenced by my wife, and I like them because they have a lot of male fans and they take care of their male fans.â
Eiko Gamiyauchi (66), a long time fan of TVXQ, said, âI like all of TVXQâs songs, and I feel more strength and vitality when I listen to their music,â and âIâll be watching the concert with my daughter, and the other four members of our family have gotten seats elsewhere to enjoy the concert. Everyone in our family is a TVXQ fan.â
The members couldnât hide their gratitude for their fans. U-Know Yunho said, âThe stadium is so big. Weâre the first international artistes to hold a concert at the Nissan Stadium. And itâs all thanks to you all.â Max Changmin said, âTo be honest, holding a concert in such a large venue can be physically draining, but you all have given us so much power.â
They also expressed their pride as they said, âToday marks a new page in TVXQâs history. Iâm happy to be spending this precious time with you allâ (Max Changmin) and, âNissan Stadium was a gift for you all. Thank you!â (U-Know Yunho)
There were Koreans in the audience as well. Ms Lee (28), who filed for a break to visit Japan for two days, said, âI thought that Tokyo Dome was the highest one could do, but I was proven wrong by this stadium. Iâm so proud of them and I decided to fly to Japan to watch them perform.â
Fans arrived at the concert venue in the morning, regardless of the 30 degree weather and the fact that they had assigned seats. The lines that started in the New Yokohama Station, which is 20 minutes away from the Nissan Stadium, were as amazing as the view of the stadium filled to the brim with fans.
Tonightâs concert proved that TVXQ, who made their Japanese debut in 2005, are still evolving and becoming more popular than ever. Many of the fans were middle school students who had become fans two to three years ago. Jueri (13) and Gapuyu (15), who had come from Chiba and Nagoya, said, âNot only are they good-looking, but theyâre also great singers and dancers. We recently became fans of TVXQ.â
Youko Kikuta (34), a staff member of AVEX LIVE, the company thatâs worked with TVXQ since their first Japanese concert, said, âWhen they made their debut, they started off in a small-scale theater, but theyâve been able to come so far because theyâve touched their fans at each other, prompting fans to bring their friends and family,â and âTheir latest success is more meaningful because they achieved it through only their passion and high quality performances, rather than through a fad or the power of the media.â
A representative of the J-POP industry stated, âThough itâs true that K-pop and the Hallyu Wave have died down in Japan, TVXQ will continue to grow in popularity with a growing fandom.â
TVXQ attracted 72,000 fans in the same venue on the 18th, with a total of 144,000 fans joining them across two days. Fans who were unable to go the concert were able to attend a live viewing that was held in 38 theaters across Japan, including Hokkaido and Osaka.
