Happy Birthday to Thatmelancholysoul from Mommy Cha

Happy Birthday to thatmelancholysoul from Mommy Cha

I can remember the first time that I laid eyes on you. You were blue, and a team of doctors and nurses were fighting for your life. Thankfully, through God’s grace, they won, and I was able to hold you in my arms. You have always been my most curious one; the one who questions everything; and my music and dance companion. If I were to define you I would say that you are multi-faceted and multi-talented. What you choose to put your mind, time, and effort into becomes a positive reality. It is in the choosing that you must display the most wisdom–because every moment spent in pursuit of a goal is a lost moment if the goal is not attained.

You have endless potential my Dear, and life is beckoning you to explore and conquer. I can remember being your age and the things that I wanted to do– imaginable and unimaginable things. The horizon was vast and many pursuits beckoned. Art college came first–then an art career. BB, [Before Babies], I was content with graphics, but after your sister and then you were born–I somehow gained a different perspective on life.  I discovered that I enjoyed children so much that my next pursuit became teaching–a pursuit I still engage in. Over time, I have taught everything from kindergarten to college; from church school to public education; infancy to geriatrics–and I have enjoyed them all. I have had a wonderful life filled with teaching and learning with and from you and your sister. Surprisingly, young people can teach their elders a thing or two. It is the young who face challenges head on and refuse to give quarter. It is the young who look for possibilities before impossibilities.

I guess I could say that I hold you responsible for introducing me to the world of J-Pop and K-Pop. First came Super Junior. I struggled so hard to remember [much less pronounce] each member’s name, and I danced many times with you to ‘Sorry, Sorry’. For a while we were unaware of any other K-pop groups until the day that you discovered ‘Mirotic’ while surfing on Youtube. That is the day that DBSK became a part of our existence. I was immediately fascinated by their dancing and singing abilities, and I can remember spending hour upon hour learning everything that I could about the group and its members. I learned to talk on the blogs and forums, and gradually became solidly supportive of Jaejoong, Yunho, Yoochun, Junsu, and Changmin. I was attracted by their musicality and their personalities. For a while I struggled because I couldn’t understand why, I, a classic music teacher, gospel singer, songwriter, wife, and mother of two grown daughters, would enjoy listening to this music. For some reason it both soothed me and challenged me to explore beyond my everyday music parameters. Hence came that immediate Mommy, agape love for the members of DBSK. If it seems as if Super Junior paled in comparison, not so, I still enjoy their music and their antics. What was most surprising, however, was that nurturing spot that DBSK immediately occupied. I became a Momma Bear, ready to defend if needed. Sadly, it would be needed.

There are happenings in life that defy description. One such happening was the split of DBSK. 2010 became a remarkable year that smelled of change on the wind. Many were confused and frightened, including the members, and in an effort that would take strength from us all, the Five became Three and Two. As a family, we stood in the position of distressed observer, never abandoning any member, but with a spirit that knew deep down that things would never again be the same. This didn’t mean that hope was abandoned, but reality dictated that change was inevitable. We fought with everything in us to maintain the faith, and we still fight for the hope that someday these friends and brothers will be able to sit down and enjoy quality time together. It is no longer about the music or the companies–it is about the friendships.

So now, thatmelancholysoul, how does this in any way relate to your Birthday? Why have I written this narrative in this way? It is because I want to see you fight just as hard to be who you are despite all the obstacles and oppositions that life can mete out. It isn’t even about who’s right or wrong–it is about seeking the truth that will set you free to pursue goals that are beneficial to you and to those around you. It is about hanging in there when everyone else says that it is time to give up. It is about clinging to hope when it seems as if hope has abandoned you. Word to the wise–hope never will abandon you as long as you cling to hope because hope is in Christ.. It is in realizing that faith and hope are the underpinnings through GOD’s Holy Spirit that keep you stable in a world full of instability.

You are now an adult making adult decisions and entering this arena called life. Think deeply about things; meditate on things; then trust your spirititual instincts. …”Whatever things are pure, think on these things”….

I will always love you, thatmelancholysoul, with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength because I am striving to be made in the image of Christ.  I do not expect perfection…I only ask you to strive for it.

Love, Mommy

[TRANS] 130204 Kim Sung Ryeong Says, “TVXQ’s U-Know Yunho Is A Human Being Too”

Kim Sung Ryeong confessed that it was difficult for her to get along with Jung Yunho (U-Know Yunho) at first.

The episode of SBS’ ‘Good Morning’ that aired on the 4th showed a special segment of the Monday-Tuesday drama ‘Queen of Ambition’.

On this day, Kim Sung Ryeong talked about the first time she met TVXQ’s Jung Yunho, who appears as the actress’ younger brother in the drama.

She said, “He’s a famous idol star, and though he’s my junior, he and I didn’t walk down the same path to become an actor, so I put up a wall between us. But then I realized that doing that wouldn’t help. I opened up to Yunho, and he warmly accepted me, and I’m very grateful for that.”

She continued to add, “He has a lot of passion and he’s such a nice guy. I used to think he was a young star I could never relate to, but I realized that he’s a human being too, just like the rest of us. I’d like him to shine brighter as an actor. Like how there are different levels in the path of a singer, actors get better by gaining experience through the projects they work on. I’d love to see him work his way up the different levels of being an actor and work on good projects.”

Kim Sung Ryeong and Jung Yunho play the role of the daughter and son of BaekHak Group’s Chairman Baek Chang Hak.

Missing You–A Happy Ending+The King of Dramas–A Hurried Happy Ending

Missing You–A Happy Ending

After all the hints of a tragic ending for Jung Woo and Soo Yeon of “Missing You” including [supposedly] Yoochun’s assessment that his character needed to be killed off to make things right, I was happy to see that my own personal desire for the melodrama’s ending was realized. I could see no justification in a conclusion that would separate Jung Woo and Soo Yeon after all the heartache they had been through. Fourteen years is a long time to have an ache in your heart–at least the reward of being together can ease that hurt. There were a lot of positive role model elements in this melodrama that endeared it to my heart immediately. Jung Woo displays great compassion and sensitivity, and Soo Yeon has an ability for self-sacrifice that is fearsome. The two of them deserved each other. All of the actors in this melodrama were commendable, believable, and deserved awards all around.

I have to say something here about Yoo Seung Ho who portrays “Harry” aka Kang Hyung Joon in “Missing You’. I was curious so I looked up his profile and realized why he is such a good actor. He has been acting for years. I believe that his acting in “Missing You” was top notch. He somehow managed to be a villain and make you love him at the same time. My mother’s heart went out to Harry Borrison.

The King of Dramas–A Hurried Happy Ending

I have no idea how the ratings went for this remarkable drama. It probably wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea–it taught too many life lessons. I fell totally in love with all of the characters especially Mr. Aen Seo-ni and Writer Lee aka Kim Myeong-min and Jeong Ryeo-won. Choi Si Won of Super Junior also starred in this drama that centered on the transformation of the main characters from self-centered obnoxious persons into caring individuals. I enjoyed every moment of this drama that was packed with an excellent cast. It was apparent that the writer’s intent was on redeeming the hearts and minds of the main characters, especially Aen Seo-ni, who makes a 360° transformation by the conclusion of this drama. His influence and inspiration–a mere slip of a girl who teaches him that people matter more than success or appearances. I was only disappointed at the end of this drama by what appeared to be a rushed ending. I believe it would have benefited from two additional episodes.

Hats off to both of these well-written, well acted dramas.

The Reason Kim Junsu Came On The Stage With His Mother

The Reason Kim Junsu Came On The Stage With His Mother

The young son asked his mother with limpid eyes after singing with his mother.

“Mom, you sing so well. Why didn’t you become a singer?”

His mother smiled and answered to his unexpected question.

“I dreamed of being a singer once, but your grandfather was opposed to it so much…”

The boy promised to his mother who smiled, but slurred her words at the end.
“Mom! I’ll be successful and achieve your dreams for you. I promise.” About 10 years since this promise, she received a phone call from her son at the end of the year.

“Mom, won’t you sing a song with me at my concert?” At first when she heard his son’s words over the phone, she thought he was joking. Her son continued to talk.

“Mom, do you remember? The promise I made you to sing with you on the stage when I become a successful singer. I will be really happy if you would be a guest for my concert.” Her son’s voice was a little bit shaky. But she shook her head at the unexpected suggestion.

“I know what you mean, but you know I can’t sing well as I once could. Don’t you know that better than I do? I’m thankful and happy just at the fact you remembered the promise you made such a long time ago that I’d forgotten about.

But her son was stubborn. She asked him over and over.

“Won’t I ruin your concert? It’s true that I dreamed of being a singer, but I’ve never been on stage before…”

“Don’t worry. You can do better than me. I want to make your dream come true.”

January 1st 12am, 2013.

K-pop star Kim Junsu(XIA)’s solo concert was at the peak at COEX Hall D, Samsung-dong, Seoul. 7000 fans filling in the venue with red lights made their wishes for the new year, wished luck and blessings.

Kim Junsu took a sip of water on the stage.

“I am about to achieve my dream right here today. It is both my dream since my childhood and hers too. My dream is finally coming true today. She probably will be shaking with anxiety behind the stage. Please give her a round of applause and loud cheers.”

The audience began to stir. Curiosity was aroused about who he is introducing. Everyone thought a surprise guest would appear on the stage like any other concerts. ‘Dream of Goose’ started to flow with the sound of the piano.

At that time an unfamiliar middle-aged woman entered the stage with a microphone. The woman standing in the spotlight was Kim Junsu’s mother Yoon Youngmi-ssi. It was a surprising guest, against everyone’s expectation. The mother and the son sang ‘Dream of Goose’ passionately while holding hands. The son beat time with his hands for his nervous mother.

When the song was over, Yoon-ssi shed tears and said, “I’m so thankful to my son who kept the promise he made when he was a child and made my dream true.” The son hugged her without saying anything. Then he escorted his mother backstage.

The son had treasured his ‘mother’s dream’ that she had to give up due to her family’s opposition in his heart. He wanted to give back her ‘lost dream’ as his concert.

So he chose ‘Dream of Goose’ to sing. To deliver a hopeful message to his fans that even a ragged, abandoned dream can cross the wall and soar high into the sky. That even the heavy world will never be able to tie you down. To imagine smiling together at the end of life.

It seemed that their heart touched the audience. One by one, the audience that has been watching the stage started to wipe their tears. All fans said “It was the most beautiful and touching stage in this concert,” and continued, “They embraced the venue warmly with that one song.”

Fans also said, “Their vocals weren’t just technically excellent. Their voices and emotions go so well together, so their chord and tone were in harmony.” More than anything, it was touching to hear a fan saying “Watching the performance, it made me think back what my parent’s wish is and what did I do to achieve it.”

Kim Junsu’s ‘Ballad&Musical Concert’ that was held from December 29th to 31th at COEX, Seoul had a story of the stages he had dreamt of in his childhood and meeting himself who achieved his dreams. However, to Kim Junsu, it was a meaningful concert because not only his dream was achieved, but he also kept the promise he made to his mother when he was a child and helped her mother’s dream to come true. As fans’ dreams were also painted over, they made the best harmony on earth.

Watching his mother’s dream come true while Junsu watched his mother keeping her own dreams in her heart and working hard only for her son’s success. Maybe this was Kim Junsu’s dream too. A beautiful fairy tale-like story of a successful son achieving his mother’s dream became a reality at the very first moment of the first day of 2013, on Kim Junsu’s stage.

●This article was written via a phone interview with Kim Junsu’s mother Yoon Youngmi-ssi after the concert was over.

Translated Lyrics to Goose’s Dream

I… I used to have a dream
Though thrown away and torn
and looks worn out
I kept it within my heart as if it was a treasure

Sometimes, though someone laughed at me
for an unknown reason
behind my back
I had to endure, I could endure
For that day…

You always tell me worriedly
That pointless dream is a poison
That this world is like a book, where the end is already written
That it is a reality that can’t be reversed

That’s right, I… I have a dream
I believe in that dream.
Just you watch me.
I can proudly confront
That coldly standing wall called fate.

Some day, I’ll climb over that wall
And fly high to that sky
Even this heavy world cannot bind me.
Let’s spend the day when I’ll laugh at the end of my life together…

You always tell me worriedly
That pointless dream is a poison
That this world is like a book, where the end is already written
That it is a reality that can’t be reversed

That’s right, I… I have a dream
I believe in that dream.
Just you watch me.
I can proudly confront
That coldly standing wall called fate.

Some day, I’ll climb over that wall
And fly high to that sky
Even this heavy world cannot bind me.
Let’s spend the day when I’ll laugh at the end of my life together…

(chorus)
