Sohn Ho Joon opened up about his friendship with U-Know Yunho.

During the episode of tvN’s ‘Taxi – Reply 1994 Special’ that aired on the 23rd of January, Sohn Ho Joon appeared as a special guest with Do Hee and Baro, and opened up about his famous friendship with U-Know Yunho.

Sohn Ho Joon said, “Yunho used to go to school with a junior I was close to. Back when Yunho was having a hard time, I used to get an allowance from my parents. When I used to come to Seoul, I would give Yunho any money I had left. After Yunho became a member of TVXQ, he took care of me really well.”

He continued to add, “People say we have a great friendship, but he’s actually like family to me. He checks on all the articles written about me, and sends them to me in the morning. We just seem to click. We’re friends bonded by loyalty.”

Sohn Ho Joon also revealed, “I was able to start my broadcasted work because Yunho introduced me to a manager,” and talked about his days as a MC with Byun Jung Min, as well as his participation in the project group Tachyon.

[TRANS] 140109 [Star Cast] ‘Something’ Interesting About ‘Something’, As Told By TVXQ

10 years. 10 years are an epoch. And ‘TVXQ’ have changed in those 10 years. No, they have transformed. And their new album ‘TENSE’ is a result of that transformation. ‘TENSE’ has the meaning of ‘full of nerves and tension’. This is meant to reflect the nerves and tension that TVXQ feel when they’re on stage. It also reflects the pronunciation of ’10th’, to commemorate the group’s 10th anniversary.

TVXQ’s change is refreshing and exciting. This can be felt through their title track’ Something’. As a swing jazz song, a genre that TVXQ have never tried before, it is lively and refreshing. Completely opposite from the grandiose and strong music they’ve created so far, the song is appealing to the masses.

“We wanted to show a lively and refreshing side of TVXQ that we’ve never shown before to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We chose swing jazz because our goal to strive for new music and new genres. We wanted to be more appealing to the public. Shall we call it a gift for our fans?”

Why did TVXQ choose ‘Something’ as the title track of their 10th anniversary album? There’s ‘something’ there that has yet to be uncovered. Here is that ‘something’ of ‘Something’, as told by the members of TVXQ themselves.

◆”‘Something’ marks a flare of change.” (by Yunho)

We first asked about the musical aspects of their choice. We wanted to know why they chose ‘Something’. Their answer was simple. It was ‘A flare to mark a transformation’. Changmin said, “We wanted to showcase a variety of our charms. We searched for fun and lively music that we could enjoy singing, and ‘Something’ seemed to tick all the boxes.”

Yunho expressed his agreement as he added, “We added a modern twist to a classic genre that never goes out of style,” and “We wanted to get our music out to as many people as possible. It was like a flare to signal that TVXQ are ready to continue trying out a variety of new genres in the future.”

Does that mean their composers have changed? A surprising story behind ‘Something’ is that is was created by the Yoo brothers (Yoo Young Jin, Yoo Han Jin). As the brothers are famous for their ‘SMP’ (SM’s signature music that focuses on powerful performances) music, fans were shocked to discover that they had written the song. Could this signify a change for the Yoo brothers as well?

“TVXQ have always strived to created music that focuses heavily on the performance aspect of things. And because the Yoo brothers wrote most of our title songs, the image of ‘Yoo Young Jin + Yoo Han Jin = SMP’ seems to have stuck. But those two composers have worked with a huge range of genres. They will continue to surprise everyone with new music.” (TVXQ)

What was the musical aspect they focused on the most? It was their vocals. Swing jazz is easy to listen to but difficult to sing. This is because rhythm is the key to a successful swing jazz piece. Yunho explained, “It’s a 24-beat song. We tried to bring the rhythm to life. We decided to focus on creating nuances for terms like ‘Sneak up’ with our pronunciation.”

Changmin said, “The key point of his song is to keep the lively rhythm going. We wanted to bring the rhythm to life through our singing,” and “We did our best to make it fun enough for people to dance along to. The vocal range is actually lower than our previous songs, and I think this makes the song more appealing to our listeners.”

◆”The choreography is a musical with a story” (by Changmin)

There’s something that can’t be left out when talking about TVXQ, and that is ‘performance’. They’ve come back with an extremely difficult dance number that uses ropes. From pretending to play the guitar to creating a boxing ring, standing microphones and the strings of a marionette doll, viewers are bombarded with an array of exciting dance moves.

The choreography was created by Tony Testa, who has worked with stars like Britney Spears and Janet Jackson. Where did the idea come from? Yunho said, “The swing jazz genre reminded us of shows in Las Vegas. We were trying to think of something that could reflect that, and that’s how the idea of our line performances was created.”

Here is the second interesting story. Both TVXQ and the dancers use the ropes in their line performance, and we wonder if any accidents have occurred during rehearsals. Yunho said, “While rehearsing, we kept stepping on the ropes, bumping into each other  and falling over. Our final product is a result of countless hours of rehearsals. But we can never let our guard down because we don’t know what could happen at any moment.”

Changmin stated that the ending is the most difficult move of all, which has them leaning forward with nothing but the ropes keeping them upright. He said, “We’re the first to try out a performance with ropes. Personally, I’ve fallen over a lot during the end part of our performance. That part still worries me, but I’ve gotten used to it through constant practice and the exchange of opinions.”

They’ve emphasized a change from other jazz dance sequences, with a story-based musical as their goal. Changmin said, “We wanted to differentiate ourselves from the choreography of other swing pieces. I think our line performance helps us do that. We practiced whenever we had a spare moment so we could get used to it.”

Yunho added to this by saying, “There are a lot of dynamic and large-scale moves in our new dance,” and “Our ensemble consists of our backup dancers and ropes, and we’ve created a performance that feels like a musical with a story. I think our new performance style has helped showcase a new side of TVXQ.”

◆”Our style? Cute and sexy…?” (by Yunho)

They’ve completely changed their style as well. It’s gotten much lighter than before. Short pants that show their ankles, and leopard-print pieces of clothing are used to give off a lively image. Changmin said, “We didn’t want our outfits to be too serious because it wouldn’t go with our expressions or performances, so we changed our look to match the song.”

Yunho said, “The overall concept of our song is a big band. But we’ve added a modern twist to it,” and “We’ve taken classical suits and added a modern twist with checkered prints. We’ve created a new look for TVXQ that is lively, but still has an impact.”

The hairstyles are the biggest change for TVXQ. They’ve taken risks that they’ve never taken before. Changmin said, “I’ve dyed my hair and parted it down the middle with curls. It’s a style I’ve never tried before. I’ve gone through a variety of hairstyles in the past 10 years, but I’ve never done this one before. I wanted it to match the song.”

Yunho also tries out wavy curls or a 1:9 side parting. Yunho said, “Instead of emphasizing flamboyance, I opted for a natural look. It’s a style that goes well with the suits,” and “To put it in one sentence, it’s a cute but sexy look.”

Each member’s style preference has been taken into account. Though the style and colors of their suits are the same, small differences have been made in the details. Yunho has a brighter and cuter look while Changmin prefers a more formal look. Their outfits reflect this difference.

TVXQ said, “We don’t make a lot of differences between the outfits worn by each member. We prefer to find a balance through different details,” and “The difference in how we’re styled is that Yunho wears vests for a lighter look, while Changmin prefers to wear jackets for a formal look.”

To conclude, ‘Something’ reflects TVXQ’s transformation. Their goal was to break the stereotype of ‘TVXQ=performance’ and connect with the public on a deeper level. Yunho said, “We want people to think of us as versatile artistes, rather than just focusing on our powerful performances. I want us to be a group that is appealing to the public.”

Changmin shares the same opinion. He said, “If TVXQ’s music till now has been ‘music to watch’, I hope ‘Something’ helps transform our music into ‘music to listen to as well as to watch’,” and “We want people to know that TVXQ can create ‘easy listening’ music, and that’s what we’re doing right now.”

They also revealed a secret to enjoying ‘Something’ more. Yunho said that people should sing this song at karaoke rooms as he stated, “I recommend that people sing ‘Something’ when they go sing karaoke. You can use the microphones there to follow along with the choreography, and that will make it even more fun.”

TVXQ concluded with remarks about their 10th anniversary, and what comes next. Yunho said, “We plan to continue our never-ending transformations,” and “Our goal is to keep trying out new music. Our 10th anniversary marked our plan to become more appealing. I’m excited to see what our 11th anniversary will bring.”

What’s on Changmin’s mind? “When people think of TVXQ, they immediately think of strong performances,” and “I’m determined to show people that TVXQ are capable of a variety of genres through ‘Something’. I’m confident that we’ll be able to do so. This is want I want to say most, with 10 years of experience under my belt.”

Kim Jae Joong has deeply captured the hearts of the Chinese people because of his well mannered gestures.

Last December 6th, Kim Jae Joong stopped by Nanjing, China for his Asia tour show.

Before his said show, Kim Jae Joong first met up with 50 local media reporters who anticipated his arrival and they were impressed because the idol showed great manner and attitude.

Kim Jae Joong shared, “I added an extra show in Nanjing for fans who are making their way all the way to Nanjing from different regions.”

Kim Jae Joong also answered questions pertaining to his new album and how he feels about his stay in China.

 

One of the media reporters asked him why he chose’ love’ as the theme of his new album. He responded ,”I think love is the most beautiful motif that people can write music and story from. Everyone goes through it at some point in their lives, but it is always equally difficult to everyone, and I tried to express such feelings through the album. I also tried to include messages into my performance costumes as well. Acting is not similar to acting, not even by a bit, so I need to express the music through outfits, performance, and poses as well.”

After the press conference, Kim Jae Joong did a photo op and he showed care for the reporters as well.

[Exclusive] Interview with Producer Bruce “Automatic” Vanderveer: Working with XIA Junsu on “Uncommitted” and “Incredible”

Back in the summer of 2012, many fans were excited to learn about the release of Junsu’s (XIA‘s) new English single album, “Uncommitted.” The album opened a new understanding towards the singer’s ability to digest and express different musical ranges. Many have wondered about the American producer behind the English song “Uncommitted”. The question might have occurred again this past summer, when the same producer of “Uncommitted” had worked with Junsu to create the song “Incredible,” the Korean and English title song featuring Quincy Brown in Junsu’s second solo album.

American producer Bruce “Automatic” Vanderveer, CEO of InRage Entertainment, is the mastermind behind “Uncommitted” and “Incredible,” two completely opposite styled songs that managed to fit perfectly with Junsu’s vocals. While “Uncommitted” will make you shed tears as you grasp the heart-wrenching lyrics, “Incredible” will make you throw away the tear-moistened tissue as you dance along to the upbeat rhythm.

Despite his busy schedule, I had the opportunity to interview producer Bruce “Automatic” in obtaining the exclusive scope of what it was like to work with Junsu, as well as what the processes of creating two incredible hit songs entailed when working in the realm of K-Pop as an American music producer. Having worked with world famous singers such as Michael Jackson and Christina Aguilera, producer “Automatic” provides a musical perspective to K-Pop that leads the way for Korean pop to be identified as a world renowned genre.

I.Said.Hi: It’s a pleasure to have this interview with you!

Bruce “Automatic” Vanderveer: Hi! Awesome, I’ve been waiting for your call. I’m here at the studio right now.

I: I just have some questions for you that I know our readers are curious about. So, let’s get started! First off, you’ve worked with Junsu twice now, producing both “Uncommitted” and “Incredible.” Let’s go back to the beginning. How did this relationship form?

B: C-JeS actually contacted me. It was a very unique situation. They had an independent A&R (Artist and Repertoire) person named Niddy who was reaching out to different producers. He asked me if I could contribute any songs for Junsu’s album, but I didn’t know who Junsu was. My daughter knew who he was and she was so excited to hear that Junsu wanted new material. I have worked with Pink, Christina Aguilera, and so many other acts, but I’ve never worked with anyone in K-Pop. But my daughter was into JYJ, BIG BANG, TVXQ, G-Dragon, EXO, and all these different groups. She convinced me, and I submitted many songs. Junsu chose “Uncommitted,” but “Uncommitted” was a song I wrote four years ago, so I didn’t really think he would take the song. It was a good song, but I didn’t think he would choose it. I was so surprised when he chose it.

I: Well, I know that many readers are curious about your experiences working with Junsu. What was it like to work with him? Do you have any funny or interesting episodes while working with him?

B: Junsu, when he is in a creative environment, is relaxed and so funny. He’s just a really down-to-earth guy. When we were recording “Incredible,” we were trying to help him re-cut some of the Korean parts, and I was trying my best to pronounce Korean. So sometimes, he would start laughing at my pronunciation. We were joking all the time. After we would do a take or two, he would start practicing Korean with me.

I: Do you remember any of the Korean words or phrases you learned?

B: ‘Anyeonghasaeyo’ (‘Hello’ in Korean) is all that I’ve got so far [laughs], but we are making it important to start learning Korean. The fact that we have so many fans in Korea and all around the world makes us want to start learning.

I: Since “Uncommitted” was sung in English, what was the process like to produce an English song for a Korean singer?

B: My partner, Ebony Cunningham, is the one who guided him through the English lyrics of “Uncommitted.” She really helped him with the sounds and vowels, and also helped him with the American dialect. Junsu is such a fast learner, and it was really amazing because he was able to capture Ebony’s pronunciation very quickly. Also in the studio at the time was the CEO of C-JeS, Mr Baek (Baek Chang Joo). Mr. Baek was sitting there and also learning the English lyrics. It was a great feeling and vibe because this was the first time we were working with Junsu, and we were all feeding off of each other. Junsu was being a little shy when trying to pronounce the English, but we were all applauding in the studio saying, “You got it, you got it!” It was just a real great cultural experience between people who were learning to communicate with each other. Junsu was a real warm person, so he made us feel comfortable right away.

I: Then how was it like working with Junsu when producing “Incredible,” since the song is in both Korean and English?

B: What’s interesting is that we wrote “Incredible” and played it for Junsu the day we were recording “Uncommitted.” Junsu, for the year that he had been (promoting) “Uncommitted,” he would say or tweet certain things that gave us a clue that he still remembered the song. So he contacted us and let us know that he wanted to do the song and also translate some of the song into Korean. That’s when Junsu got involved in re-creating some of the lyrics. His writing ability is awesome. Through the Korean lyrics, he was able to not only translate the lyrics into Korean but add more dimension to the song; the lyrics became more beautiful. This is our first collaboration that we wrote together, and we are intending on doing more.

When releasing the video for “Incredible,” we sat and talked, and he was teaching me more Korean. I call him my Korean teacher [laughs]. He was saying that he’s looking forward to doing more songs together and was telling me to start working on it now. He works so hard, because here he is recording the video for “Incredible,” and we are talking about the next song. He’s always thinking in advance.

I: For the next song, what kind of music styles would you like to produce for Junsu?

B: The next couple of things we are going to do with Junsu are going to be a hybrid of different styles of music. I play certain instruments, so one of the advantages we have is to produce music of many different genres and styles. Junsu is one of the most versatile singers I have heard. He could sing in any genre. The next collaboration we work on is going to surprise a lot of people because it’s going to be different genres mixed with popular music, pop. It’s going to be very exciting.

I: Now that you have experienced both Korean and American music cultures, what are the traits of K-Pop that you find unique?

B: One of the things I love about K-Pop music is that it incorporates a lot of true musical styles that a lot of the times in America we don’t do any more. The stuff I produce in America is very technical and very advanced, but sometimes chord structure is not important as stylization and swagger. But a lot of K-Pop music I listen to really love strong chords, beautiful changes, and good lyrical content, so it helps me explore. As a producer who produced so many different genres K-Pop satisfies my artistic needs. A lot of times, I produce songs that don’t have a lot of chord changes, and its more focused on vocals. Yet in K-Pop, a lot of the songs I listen to are challenging because you can play it on the piano and on the guitar. It’s really beautiful, and I want to help expand K-Pop music in America so that this becomes a part of American culture and music.

You know, I got the interview for Junsu with the Grammys and he was on the front page of Grammys.com. The interview was through a friend of mine associated with the Grammys. I’m hoping that eventually the Grammys would start to recognize K-pop. They do have a world music category, but I want K-pop to have their own category.

I: Speaking of K-Pop awareness in American culture, we’ve seen the difficulties of big name K-Pop artists trying to break in to the American music industry. As an accomplished and experienced American music producer, what are some advice you would give to K-Pop singers trying to make it in the American Music Industry?

B: It’s important to plant seeds. As I listen to more K-pop, the artists seem to incorporate English in their work. G-Dragon did a collaboration with Missy Elliot. If we could continue to incorporate English in to K-Pop, and also try to do as many collaborations with established American artists, it would eventually break down those barriers. PSY has definitely helped to break down many barriers. When we have singers like Junsu who is more of a vocalist, I think Americans would understand that there are many dimensions to K-Pop artists. So we planted the seed because Junsu was the very first K-Pop artist to be on the Grammys (website). We worked real hard to have that happen, and we are going to keep on doing that, keep planting seeds, and help break some grounds.

I: As a producer and the CEO of InRage Entertainment, You were able to work with many different people from different backgrounds and cultures. Is there any other area of music that you have yet to venture and would love to challenge?

B: It’s funny that you mention it because my first Top Ten record was a country record with an artist name Bettina Bush. She was on “American Idol,” and (the album) was number two on the Hot Singles Sales. That was really ground breaking because I’m an African American from Brooklyn, New York. It seems like my career has been frequently crossing these cultural boundaries. K-Pop came by almost an accident, and now for me to be one of the American pioneers for K-pop is just a cool thing. I’m so honored to be a part of this. I would love to venture out to J-Pop as well.

I am also part of a rock band called “Asphalt Messiah,” and again, I’m a black guy doing rock. So we keep doing things that are a bit unorthodox. The next thing we do with Junsu and hopefully with JYJ will be unique.

I just wanted to add one thing that may seem off topic. Puff Daddy‘s (AKA P.Diddy, Diddy, Sean Combs) son, Quincy Brown, featured in “Incredible,” and he sang a line, “Shake your spaceship candy.” Nobody knew that Spaceship Candy is actually a clothing line. It’s a clothing line, and we just started selling clothes. I just wanted to add that that because everyone was asking about that line. [laughs]

I: Finally, to wrap things up, what is your big vision for InRage Entertainment, and how is K-Pop included in the vision?

B: InRage Entertainment’s core value is that we believe in artistic freedom, and we also believe in cultural togetherness. That’s what we’re all about. We have a very strong vision for the future of music and for the future of film. We have on our team a couple of Korean executives who are part of InRage entertainment, and we are working on some new acts. We are going to be putting together our own K-Pop acts. We are preparing a solo female artist and a group, and these people are coming from both Korea and America. We want to continue expanding K-Pop’s appeal, and try to gather a whole bunch of different K-Pop concepts so we can continue pushing K-Pop in to the American music industry. We’re still trying to get it together right now, but we’ve got some awesome things prepared.

Also, the result of doing KCON was that a lot of people have asked to collaborate with us.We plan on returning those people’s calls and trying to do more music. Lately, we have been producing a lot of K-Pop music, and we also have people translating for us, getting it ready for us to play for other K-Pop artists. We truly want to work with BIG BANG, G-Dragon, EXO, and all the other artists out there. That’s our goal.

[TRANS] 131113 ‘Road Of Hope’ U-Know Yunho, “I Learned So Much From The Children Of Africa”

U-Know Yunho attended the press conference of KBS’ ’2013 Road Of Hope’ program that was held in Yeoido and said, “I left with the determination to create great memories with the children I was set to meet.”

He continued to add, “I learned about what the children need most. Solving hunger is more important than curing illnesses for them, and they all have a sadness in them that can only be born from experience,” and “I realized that things I take for granted aren’t always available in the opposite side of the world.”

Near the end of his speech, U-Know Yunho stated, “Although I went on this journey to do something for the children, I came back with so many dreams that they gave me.”

The special ’2013 Road of Hope’ program will follow top stars like Lee Bo Young, Park Sang Won, U-Know Yunho and Kim Mi Suk as they travel to impoverished countries to give hope to the children who live there.

Meanwhile, the heartwarming stories will begin airing every Saturday at 5:30pm on KBS1 from the 16th of November.

[TRANS] 131103 Kim Jaejoong’s Concert, “There Is No Right Answer To The Dress Code Of Innocence And Impurity”

On the 3rd of November, JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong held a press conference at a conference room in COEX to commemorate the release of his first full-length album ‘WWW: Who, When Why’ and the end of the Seoul leg of his Asia tour.

Starting off in Seoul on the 2nd of 3rd of November, Kim Jaejoong is set to perform in Yokohama, Japan on the 15th and 16th, in Taiwan on the 23rd and in Nanjing, China on the 7th of December. The Seoul concerts attracted 14,000 fans across two days and were sold out in just 15 minutes. The concert features tracks from his ‘WWW’ album, as well as other songs that Kim Jaejoong likes singing, such as ‘Glamorous Sky’ and ‘Ultra Soul’. Kim Jaejoong will also be singing ‘Makeup’ in Korean, which he himself translated from Japanese.

Kim Jaejoong looked calm yet excited, having already performed the night before at the same venue. The singer said, “This is my first full-length solo album, so everything feels new and I feel great about it. This album has a very strong rock influence infused throughout the whole album. But it’s not just about rock; I’ve incorporated other genres such as pop, punk and hard rock with melodies that are easy to follow to bring more variety to the album.”

Regarding his first concert, Kim Jaejoong said, “I worked really hard for this concert. It’s great that I’ll be able to make it an exciting concert with a live band. I saw the audience bobbing their heads to the beat and jumping along to the music. I was joined by Moon Myung Jin and Kim Beom Soo yesterday. Today, I’ll be joined by Lee Sang Gon and Gummy. It was great to see the audience cheering loudly for the guest singers as well. I believe that the guest singers have helped take my concert up another notch.”

Here is a Q&A session we had with Kim Jaejoong.

-The name of your first full-length album is ‘WWW’.
“Naming the album was a decision I made with our album management team. We talked about creating a story that connects all the tracks from the first one to the last one. In this process, someone came up with the theme of ‘love’, something that anyone can easily experience and understand, and that’s when we thought of ‘Who, When, Why’. In love, you need a person to give your love to, a place to meet that person, and a reason why you loved that person. I believe these three things are important when it comes to love. I’ve incorporated these three things into all thirteen tracks. There are some songs that beat around the bush, and some that are more direct in addressing these three components.”

-The response you’ve received for ‘WWW’ from all around the world has been mostly positive.
“I was so surprised to see such love from countries that I’d never heard about before. I think it’s probably because rock is a genre that anyone can enjoy, no matter where they’re from. I think some people gave my album a listen, even if they didn’t know who I am, because of this.”

-Love is the main emotion of your music in this album.
“Isn’t love one of the emotions that are most often expressed in music?”

-Are there any differences in the concert you held yesterday and the one you’re holding today?
“In terms of stage management, nothing has changed. I guess the only differences are the guest singers who are coming today? But since this is my last performance in Seoul, I won’t hold back and keep going without worrying about my throat or body. I’ll make it a passionate performance.”

-Your dress code of innocence and impurity is quite unique.
“To be honest, there’s no right answer to the dress code of innocence and impurity. Each person’s beliefs and mindset will make their interpretations different. Even if you come dressed in your regular attire, it might look different to others based on their point of view. There’s a moment in the concert where I step back and take a look at the audience’s attire and makeup. It’s not something I do just for my own sake; it’s a time for the audience to take a good look at each other. I think I’ll probably set a dress code for all the upcoming concerts as well.”

-Did anything happen while you were preparing for your concert?
“I used to hold two or three rehearsals every day in the past, but I couldn’t do more than two a day this time around. I tried to hold back because I didn’t want to hurt myself or damage my vocal chords during rehearsals.”

-It’s been 10 years since you made your debut.
“I’m in my tenth year (of becoming a singer) and our 10th anniversary is coming up. I’ve taken on a lot of challenges during these ten years, and I tried so hard to finish everything I started. But all of a sudden, I’ve begun to feel like ‘returning’. There’s something I want to accomplish that I can only do by going back to how I felt during that whole process. I want to go back to the starting line again. I’ve got a new goal.”

-What do you mean by that?
“I guess you could call it going back to how I felt when I first began. I’ve fallen into the dilemma of ‘What should I do from now on,’ and ‘What else do I have left to develop,’ now that ten years have passed. I need something to stimulate me. I feel most concerned when I can’t feel any growing pains. I want to feel the need to continue to grow and fulfill the anticipation of others.”

-What was your proudest moment in the last ten years?
“Right now? When I released my first full-length solo album. A lot of people expressed their concern and support for me. I was conflicted on whether I should release a rock album. But I’m glad to see that so many people have responded positively to it. Even people who aren’t my fans are giving my music a listen. I’m really proud of that.”
